recorded. and, here at home, the west and south are bracing for extreme heat. >> let's get right to ginger for the latest for us this morning. good morning, ginger. >> hey, michael. we knew with el nino it was going to be hot, but it is still stunning to see three days in a row this week with temperatures hotter on earth than human instruments have ever recorded. we anticipate to see more of this breaking if not shattering records going through the next month. look how high above the actual curve of where we usually see summer that we are, and that's for now. we usually get even hotter toward the end of july and early august, and that's the globe, but you know we've been adding to that. this morning i'm in a mosquito net because i'm in this swamp, which is called a ghost forest. it's one of the most striking ways to indicate climate change, because the sea is rising so quickly here in the mid-atlantic that we are seeing these ghost forests where the saltwater intrudes on the forests and takes out the trees.

it's happening up to 14 times faster than it did in the 1850s. we will talk more about this, but we have to talk about the record highs we are seeing, the records that have already been broken. naples, florida, was 96, seattle was 91, el paso, 107. we are seeing parts of texas -- san angelo, austin -- those places with 15 straight day trends breaking records every day. look at tallahassee. heat advisories in south florida, 90s all the way up the east coast. we have been so cool, and then we are developing a huge heat wave for the west coast. all that and the severe storms to come in a bit. >> unprecedented heat there, ginger. thank you so much for that. millions are heading home from the fourth of july, with a record-breaking travel weekend. gio, you said that, when it comes to flying, everything was unexpectedly smooth? >> that's right, michael, especially when you consider the slew of cancellations and delays we saw just a week ago. and, of course, that severe weather overnight. overnight, rough weather in the midwest making the return home

after the holiday difficult. chicago, which was already expected to have the worst traffic wednesday on i-65, hit with a double whammy of severe storms. >> i'm actually scared, to be honest, because this is not normal. >> the storm zone stretching from illinois to colorado, both home to cities with hubs of major airlines. the weather affecting late flights, with large hail and damaging winds. in colorado springs, firefighters rescuing the people trapped in this car amid the floods. 16 million affected by the storms, but 50 million affected by some kind of weather across the country. all of this, in the midst of a record-breaking holiday travel weekend. the tsa screening more than 2.8 million people on friday alone. that's the most ever, with nearly 50,000 planes in the air just yesterday. and i just checked moments ago, and right now in america we are

seeing less than 100 flight cancellations, so that is very good news for the millions now returning home, rebecca. >> an absolute relief, especially for all these people who have had such a nightmare in recent days. gio, thank you so much. we now turn to the breaking news coming in about the massive deadly cargo ship fire in new jersey that killed two firefighters. eva pilgrim has a very latest. good morning, eva. >> good morning, rebecca. a massive blaze igniting on a cargo ship at port newark. two firefighters have died, several others injured after a fire broke out in cars on the tenth floor of the ship, and quickly spread to the two floors above it. newark fire chief rufus jackson said firefighters were first called at 9:20 last night. they made an attempt to put out the fire, but got pushed back by the intense heat. now, the ship was carrying about 5,000 vehicles. the port of new york and new jersey is the second largest port in the country. it's responsible for $270 billion of goods coming in each year.

an italian company, the grimaldi group, confirmed that it owns the ship. the company describes itself as italy's largest ship-owning group, and last year a grimaldi-owned ferry caught fire off of a greek island on its way to italy, killing 11 people. whit? >> eva with those breaking details. thank you. we have information out of philadelphia, the massive shooting that left five people dead. we are learning more about the ghost guns used in the attack, the suspect, and the victims. trevor ault has the latest this morning. good morning. >> the city of philadelphia has filed a lawsuit they've said has been in the works for some time, targeting the manufacturers of these ghost guns, and we are hearing from the family members who were there for this mass shooting, including a father who said his teenage son gave his

life protecting his best friend. this morning, the city of philadelphia going after ghost guns after police confirmed two of these untraceable weapons were used in monday's rampage which left five people dead. the city filing a 50-page lawsuit against two major manufacturers of these privately made gun parts which are then assembled at home. >> manufacturers try to avoid liability claiming they are selling parts, not guns. but the gun kits they sell can be assembled in minutes by virtually anyone. >> police say the alleged gunman, kimbrady carriker, was wearing a ski mask and body armor during that blocks-long shooting spree on monday, armed with an assault rifle and handgun, firing at random. surveillance footage obtained appears to show a person firing a weapon at a nearby intersection. the suspect appearing in court for the first time wednesday, where they were denied bail on more than 30 charges, including five counts of murder. prosecutors citing roommates of the suspect who told them that the shooter had been acting

strangely, wearing a bulletproof vest around the house. >> they all described he was becoming more and more agitated over the last few days. >> "i don't know why he did what he did. something must've happened to him to make them do that." authorities claimed they found a will the suspect had written june 23rd that did not reveal a motive for the shooting. >> there's not enough justice that could repay for this. >> his son was at a store with his best friend when the shooting happened. while his son survived, daujan was killed trying to help him get away. >> he was a hero, if you ask me. he died trying to protect his best friend. he's like superman. i'm so grateful to him. >> we learned there were even more mass shootings. five hurt at a florida apartment complex, six hurt and a minor killed at a maryland block

party. according to the archives, since saturday, 138 injured in more than two dozen mass shootings. michael? >> thank you so much, trevor. appreciate your reporting. we are going to go overseas now to the war in ukraine. our chief global affairs correspondent martha raddatz sat down with president zelenskyy in kyiv. she's now in the city of lviv where, overnight, three missiles struck the city, killing and wounding civilians, the largest attack in lviv since the war began. good morning, martha. >> good morning, michael. the missiles hit in the middle of the night. we were just over a mile away. we heard the powerful blasts, we felt the shock waves. you can see right over my shoulder where one of the missiles struck. up, with residents here still they are continuing to clean it up, with residents here still getting emergency care. this morning, the wounded walking dazed and bloodied after three powerful missiles pounded this normally peaceful city. the largest attack since the invasion began here.

at least four killed and more than 30 wounded. this 76-year-old woman shaken from her bed, glass and concrete covering her. "i was so scared," she said. "i didn't know what to do." 15-year-old david running from his apartment. >> when i saw the rocks falling, i thought this house, the explosion, the wave of the explosions, just -- throw me away. >> the missile attacks coming just hours after we left the heavily fortified presidential offices in kyiv, where we met with ukraine's president, volodymyr zelenskyy, whose forces are in a relentless fight against the russians. >> what is your assessment of how the counteroffensive is going right now? >> "we all want to do it faster. every day means losses." he told us the f-16 fighter jets could play a pivotal part in the

syria. our foreign correspondent, tom soufi burridge, has the latest. >> this morning, a dangerous encounter between u.s. and russian aircraft over syria. the pentagon releasing rare video saying it shows three russian fighter jets flying recklessly close to three armed u.s. reaper drones, which were on a mission against isis targets. at one point, a russian jet dropping parachute flares in the flight path of one of the american drones, forcing it to make evasive maneuvers. russia accusing those u.s. drones of violating flight safety rules by flying over joint russian-syrian military exercises. it comes after a russian jet collided with the u.s. reaper drone just four months ago, downing it in the black sea, according to the u.s. military.

als in another part of the middle east, the u.s. military close confrontation also on wednesday with another adversary at sea. iran attempting to seize two oil tankers in the gulf of oman, say u.s. officials. the pentagon releasing video of the iranian navy ship approaching one of the tankers. a nearby u.s. destroyer racing to intervene, the u.s. accusing the iranians of then opening fire on the oil tanker, with bullets ricocheting and flashing in the sky above. the pentagon also releasing images of spent ammunition cases and bullet holes on the oil tanker. >> thankfully, no one was hurt. iran denying it tried to seize the oil tankers, but the u.s. saying iran has harassed, attacked, or seized 20 internationally flagged merchant vessels in the last three years. michael? >> thank you so much, tom. we are going to switch gears and ask, who wants to be a billionaire? because there was no winner in last night's powerball drawing, so that means more than a billion dollars is up for grabs between that jackpot and the mega millions. demarco morgan is here now. demarco, show us the money.

nationwide, noa recording 57 rip current drownings so far this year. there's been a string of recent drownings in the panhandle, where the bay county sheriff says swimmers are ignoring the double red flag warnings. >> when we are at double red flags, they are extremely dangerous in that there is current pulling away from the shore and somebody can get caught in that, pulled several hundred yards into the gulf. no matter how good a swimmer you are, you are no match for that current. >> the bay county sheriff's office investigating five separate incidents where parents let their children go into the gulf while those red flags were flying, issuing $500 citations and considering child neglect charges. >> our job is to keep people safe, and that's something that we seriously have to look at. >> if you get caught in a rip current, do your best to stay calm. do not try to swim against the current. you can float with it or swim parallel to the shore. last thing, guys, it's always safer to swim near a lifeguard. >> so important to remember those tips.

"we in no way want to endanger anyone, especially children, and

i've got my mosquito net on because we are in what is called a ghost forest. it's one of the most vivid ways to see climate changing. all these trees have been eaten away by the rapid sea level rise at a very rapid pace. i will get into more of that but let's talk about the hottest temperature being tied or broken ever on earth in human instrument record history. i think we will see more of this. we are in el nino, which helps us and boosts us, but those continued upward trends of emissions is also giving that amplification to the heat that's already naturally here. so, yes, we are very hot, but we are contributing some of that. the numbers are pretty extreme. still heat advisories in florida up to burlington, vermont, where it feels like the low 90s. it's been so cool in the north but the west coast that's not going be the case as build a huge heat down there for the next couple of weeks.

>> remarkable, and we expect more of it. ginger, thank you. we turn now to the latest on that breaking news, a massive deadly cargo ship fire in new jersey that killed two firefighters, and eva pilgrim has the latest. good morning, eva. >> good morning, rebecca. a massive blaze igniting on a cargo ship at port newark. two firefighters have died, several others injured after the fire broke out on the tenth floor of the ship and quickly spread to the floors above it. fire chief rufus jackson said firefighters were first called at 9:20 last night. they made an attempt to put out the fire, but got pushed back by the intense heat. the ship was carrying about 5,000 vehicles. the port of new york and new jersey is the second largest port in the country responsible for $270 billion of goods coming in each year, and an italian company, the grimaldi group, confirmed that it does own that ship. the company describes itself as italy's largest ship-owning group. whit? >> all right, eva, thank you. now to another suspected shark bite reported off the coast of long island, the fifth now in just the past two days. stephanie ramos is at orchard beach, new york, with the very latest. stephanie, good morning. >> whit, good morning. long island here in new york is on high alert after that shark bite was reported.

as you mentioned, there have now been five suspected shark attacks in just two days. this area here last year was known as a hot spot for shark attacks, but they only reported eight shark encounters. new york's governor deploying drones across new york beaches to try to prevent encounters with sharks. just recently, a drone flying 200 yards offshore near fire island spotted 50 sharks in the water, prompting a delayed opening at the beach. around the same time, on the fourth of july, off of long island, multiple bites were reported. on tuesday, a 47-year-old man was bitten around 2:00 in the afternoon. 5 minutes later, a 49-year-old man was bitten at fire island, and just before 4:30 in the afternoon, a woman who was swimming was bitten on the upper thigh. on monday, two 15-year-olds were bitten in separate incidents. experts say we're seeing a rise in shark encounters because some species may be extending their range, or there may be more fish
