-- an update o reporter: hi guys. that's right. it has been the day for passengers on board the ruby princess. the ship is still very much here behind me at pier 27. there's noon when we might actut sail. princess cruises saying they will be offering a goodwill gesture of compensation for those on her. a start to the day for passengers on the ruby princess. princess cruises telling abc7news, the ship was damaged after making contact with the dock at pier 27. that damage clearly visible. >> i don't swim that good. reporter: jim simpson is on board the ship with his family, waiting to depart for their trip for alaska.

after creative thinking, we got each other's attention while he was standing on the balcony of his room. the ship was supposed to leave san francisco at 4:00 thursday but has been delayed because of the damage. simpson says he's not worried and that the captain has kept everyone updated. >> it's a 10 day cruise. there is plenty of time. we can make up time. i don't think it will be an issue truthfully. reporter: when will the ship actually leave? it really depends on the extent of the damage which princess has not elaborated on. >> it depends on where the damages. is it at the water line? is it above or below the waterline? is there an actual penetration in the whole? reporter: steve brown is a dean at cal state maritime. he says if the ship is dented, it is safe to set sail. if damage is more expensive, that could change things. >> if there's a hole in the whole, it would not be safe for them to go to see until it's

repaired. reporter: despite the delay, simpson says the mood on the ship remains pretty happy. he tells us his family doesn't mind a little extra time here in the bay area. >> we haven't been to san francisco in a number of years. first time for the granddaughter so we are having fun just looking at the skyline. reporter: princess cruises it's working with the u.s. receive clearance to set sail. the u.s. coast guard saying they are launching an investigation into how the crash happened. that involves drug testing department who was responsible for navigating the ship into the peer earlier this morning. tim johns, abc7news. dion: we first sent out the alert about the ruby princess is hard landing through our mobile app this morning. it's one way to stay on top of breaking news as it comes into our newsroom. download and enable those push alerts. larry: patrols have begun in

before the shooting. police were previously searching for a woman who was walking with the shooter. she is no longer considered a person of interest. larry: fireworks were to blame for a fire in antioch that destroyed two homes. contra costa county fire protection confirmed the results today. we brought you one of their stories last night at 11:00. he and three others are in need of a place to stay. across the county, crews responded to at least 69 fire incidents on the fourth of july with at least 11 of those caused by fireworks. temperatures a bit cooler than normal but that could change soon. dion: let's get to sandel with a look at the forecast. sandhya: you won't have to wait all that long but i will tell you what. if you like the pattern we are in, you will love the weather over the next 24 hours.

have to step up to the plate. >> they have to prove that they own the design and shape and forms. if i look at this one, it's just a distraction. trying to distract meta going ahead. it's just incredible to see how many people joined the new platform. it's an average of 2 million every hour. that's unheard of, especially for social media platforms. larry: twitter killer. dion: meta is one of the two major tech companies canceling conferences at the mas goni center. the latest sign of post-pandemic's troubles in downtown san francisco.

they are feeling the impact of seeing fewer customers. >> it is scary. hopefully tourism is coming back up. things will start coming back alive. these events were super big or get i don't know how it's going to affect us. it won't be in a positive way. dion: bay area council says cleanliness challenges are causing companies to think twice before meeting in san francisco. larry: graduate students at stanford university have voted to unionize. lauren martinez explains why and what's next. reporter: to make an elite research institution like stanford better, that's why graduate student instructors and researchers say they voted to unionize. >> stanford is our employer and landlord. reporter: it was a landslide win

by 94% voting yes to unionize on thursday. monica, a phd student in the earth planetary sciences department, said a key goal is higher wages. >> contrary to what people think about stanford, most of us come from working class background. our parents can help us out out there. reporter: wages can range. those in the education department can make 38,000. those in life sciences can make 48,000. those in computer engineering can make around 60,000. >> we've been going to the food pantry. we don't have proper health care. we've been saying this for year. stanford hasn't listened. the quality of our research goes down. reporter: the university says, thank you to all those who participated in the election and those who provided support. as leaders, we will continue to respect, support, and work to advance the needs of our

graduate student community. >> it's an amazing opportunity. going to stanford costs so much. we are here to work but we also deserve to have rest time, vacation time. right now, there's no protections. reporter: next step is electing a bargaining committee. lauren martinez, abc7news. dion: for the first time, the fda has granted full approval to a drug proven to slow the progression of alzheimer's disease. it is seen as a major breakthrough in the fight against the devastating condition that affects millions and is marked with memory loss, cognitive decline, and behavioral changes. mike valerio has the latest on this medical development. reporter: the first drug shown in trials to slow alzheimer's now has full fda approval. infusion centers are gearing up for an anticipated surge in new patients. >> i anticipate we will receive

at least 15 to 20% more patient referrals for this drug. reporter: the drug is administered through iv infusion once every two weeks. the drug is coverage by medicare. it has been available under accelerated fda approval since january. at a cost of more than $26,000 per year before insurance, many patients couldn't access or afford it. >> you had this treatment at your fingertips. suddenly, you had medicare saying, yeah but you can't quite get access to that at this point. reporter: a large trial funded by the drugmakers found it slowed the progression of the disease by 27%. it targets a specific protein that forms plaques in the brains of all timers patients. the drug because -- does carry risk. 13% of patients had brain swelling. 17% had brain bleeding.

develop my manufacture, and distribute naloxone. larry: some missing pieces of history have suddenly been returned to a landmark cemetery where some of california's first settlers are buried. the recovery of a long missing tombstone is a significant find for the teams of volunteers maintaining the graveyard. cornell barnard has details on where the stones were found. >> the here. reporter: volunteers revealing long forgotten history and mystery inside santa rosa's rural cemetery where many of california's early pioneers are laid to rest. >> you couldn't have read this before. this is rebecca fulkerson. she was born in 1818. reporter: the first burial took place in 1854 but over the years, many tombstones broke or went missing. >> we don't often get stones back. when i was a boy, people would

take the stones home. they would use them for landscaping in their backyard. they would use them for bookends in their homes. reporter: imagine the surprise when jonathan and his cemetery crew got a call regarding some long lost tombstones. >> we figured we would never get those back. recovered. the stones were dis homeowner inside their garage. they had likely been there for 30 years. the person's name will stay anonymous. >> we are happy to get them back. as i say, they have the best intentions. forgotten. reporter: the work to restore the missing marble has begun. >> we are going to place them together.

reporter: volunteers believe there are many more missing headstones somewhere out there in the community. their only request is, just bring them back. no questions asked. >> we have complete amnesty for anyone who wants to return anything. reporter: long-lost history now being returned to this quiet hillside cemetery. >> she died. 1855. reporter: cornell barnard, abc7news. dion: in the tenderloin district, glide reopened its indoor dining program after a nearly three and a half year hiatus. san francisco's shelter-in-place order effectively shut down glides free meal program. within three days, they pivoted to serving to go meals outdoors. guests say indoor dining is a special experience. >> it's warmer than outside. >> most of these folks spent all day outside. too many of them are spending all night outside. to be able to come into

someplace warm and comforting, it provides dignity and hope. >> getting respite goes a long way. people are not on the streets. they are inside. at the end of the day, we all want somebody to take care for us. dion: it makes a big difference. people will be able to receive a warm meal three times a day year-round. larry: cal fire getting help from an australian air tanker as the states fire season ramps up. the boeing 737 is on loan from down under. the aircraft can dump 4,000 gallons of fire retardant where it's needed within a matter of minutes. many of the tankers that calfire normally uses will hold only 3000 gallons. the u.s. and canada have sent equipment to help firefighters in australia for many years. last year, the wildfires throughout australia were devastating. it's quite -- great that we can help each other out. dion: you have to think about climate. speaking of our own weather
