>> from abc news in new york, this is america this morning. good friday morning, everyone. >> i'm andrea from ge in for rhiannon. >> and i'm lionel moise, in for andrew. we begin this morning with the extreme heat gripping most of the nation. the summer heat is setting records with temperatures expected to approach 100 as far north as vermont today. and severe storms also hitting overnight. this funnel cloud was seen near denver and a landspout was seen farther east. but the big story remains the brutally high temperatures. it's a heat that's not just uncomfortable here, buddy. >> you can hear me, man. >> it's scary all authorities in arizona releasing this video of a terrifying moment for two hikers near tucson. border patrol agents airlifting them to the hospital. one hiker suffering extreme heat stress, the other losing consciousness overcome by the triple digit temperatures around the country and around the world. the heat is inescapable. and record

breaking monday day was the hottest day the planet has experienced since record keeping began until the record was surpassed on tuesday. and wednesday. >> it is first week of july. we've got climate change. we've got el nino. these temperatures in the waters behind me, they're above average as well. so, yeah, we got a long summer ahead of it today. >> high temps in the 90s or hotter from maine to miami, 96. in vermont and in the west, heat advisories in at least six states. el paso expected to hit 105. it's 22nd consecutive day of triple digit heat. >> we're going to break that record at 23 is the records we talked about, consecutive 100 plus days. look at that, saturday, sunday, sunday will break that record. these scorching temperatures amplified by climate change. >> and we're now seeing one of the most dramatic impacts from our warming climate in something called ghost forests. our ginger zee visited one in new jersey. >> a ghost forest is one of the most striking images where we can see the climate changing and rapidly, you know, coastal

forests, they sink and then sea level rises naturally. but we have advanced that sea level rise so quickly, especially here in the mid-atlantic. we are losing forests because the salt water intrudes on the roots here. faster and up to 14 times faster than just 150 years ago. >> in the coming decades, hundreds of thousands of acres of forests along the us coast are set to suffer the same fate. we'll get a check of your local forecast in just a few moments. new details about the cargo ship fire in newark, new jersey, that left two firefighters dead. >> the ship carrying 5000 used cars could burn for days to come. the fire is being fueled by oil and gas inside the vehicles. officials say city firefighters were not trained for such an emergency at a shipping port and their hoses were not compatible with the european ships hookups. the two firefighters who died got trapped after boarding the 120 foot tall ship. emergency dispatch hours were heard trying to reach them. >> firefighter brooks and

firefighter acrivos you can hear this. activate your panic alarm button. this is headquarters. >> i keep having the images of 2 to 5 fighters being lowered down from a pulley. there are no words to describe the courage. i saw overnight. >> the flames were seen burning through the hull of the ship. crews are monitoring how much water is sprayed to avoid causing the ship to lean or sink. and not far away in new york city, more than 80 people were injured after a double decker tour bus collided with a city bus. officials say the tour bus ran a red light. some victims had to be brought down ladders. none of the injuries is considered life threatening. >> the us is sending more military aid to ukraine. this time. the pentagon is expected, though, to send a controversial weapon to the battlefield. it's a weapon many us allies have banned. abc's justin finch is here with the details. justin good morning. >> good morning, lionel. the us is expected to announce it will send ukraine cluster bombs as part of its new military aid package. just one day after the

deadliest attack on the western city of lviv, ukraine, since the start of the war. the us is making a new move to better supply ukraine to take on the russians to us officials tell abc news the pentagon will provide cluster munitions guns despite human rights concerns. cluster bombs have gained a reputation for killing and injuring civilians, especially children who come across the smaller explosives or bomblets that fail to initially detonate after being dropped. many us allies have signed a treaty banning their use. we would be carefully selecting rounds with lower dud rates. >> i would note that the russians have already been employing cluster munitions on the battlefield. >> meanwhile, new tensions between the us and russia for the second consecutive day, russian jets harassed an american drone over syria, releasing flares in its flight path. moscow claims the us was violating protocols to suggest

that somehow, you know, this is our fault. >> it's ridiculous. >> and inside russia, a growing mystery concerning the whereabouts of yevgeny prigozhin an the man who led a failed uprising against vladimir putin . he was supposed to be exile to belarus, but that country's president now says prigozhin is still in russia. russian state media says authorities have raided prigozhin's home, releasing these images of the indoor pool gold bars, cash and a stash of wigs that were allegedly found in the home. and prigozhin has not been seen in public since the end of that uprising last month. lionel. >> all right. justin thank you for that update. the secret service investigation into the cocaine found at the white house is expected to wrap up next week. it was found on the ground floor of the west wing on the same floor as the situation room in a cubby where visitors leave

their phones during tours. an official told the website politico. the source of the drug is unlikely to be determined due to the large number of people with access to that area. now to iowa and the brutal killing of a high school teacher over a bad grade. >> she gave a student, one of two teenagers accused of carrying out the plot has just learned his fate from a judge who did not follow the prosecutor's recommendations as well. >> acknowledging her youth and developing brain, i find that your intent and actions were sinister, evil. >> a rebuke from an iowa judge during the sentencing of a teenager for the murder of his high school spanish teacher. >> what is your plea to murder in the first grade? guilty or not guilty? >> guilty. willard miller is one of two students who pleaded guilty in the 2021 killing of nohema graber. prosecutors say graber had given miller a bad grade. they say fueled by outrage, miller and fellow student jeremy goodale followed graber to a nearby park and beat

her to death with a baseball bat, then hid the body under a tarp. miller addressed the victims family in court. i'm sincerely sorry for the distress that i've caused you and the devastation of your family. but the judge sentenced the now 17 year old to life in prison, exceeding what prosecutors had recommended. where i will not gloss over the fact that you, you and mr. >> goodale cut nohema graber's precious life short. >> miller will be eligible for parole, but not for at least 35 years. goodale who also pleaded guilty for his role in the murder, will be sentenced next month. >> lifeguards on new york's long island will now be trained to operate drones to spot sharks. the new high tech drones are being deployed after five suspected shark bites in recent days. the drones will also be used to spot baitfish that attracts the sharks. meanwhile some experts claim cape cod may now have the highest density of great white sharks in the world

newton picked up williamson from work for their scheduled date, then drove to his home, two hours away, and killed williamson. authorities not revealing how, but they say newton's girlfriend helped hide the body, which was found on the side of a road two miles away. >> i think they had planned on meeting up and spending some time together, going on a date, and that's where when she met him, that was the plan. and unfortunately, it ended in the loss of her life to think that somebody could take somebody as innocent away, still sleeps. still sleeps with a teddy bear promise. >> edwards was a close friend of williamson, whom she knew as jacob and says they had discussed a plan to stay in touch while williamson was on the date and even share williamson's location using an app. >> we had a whole in-depth conversation for days before this and all jacob kept saying was, it'll be fine. he's the sweetest. we're so much alike. >> police say the risks involved in online dating are well documented. one study found 81%
