>> it's a little too hot, like feel like i'm going to pass out. >> after a chilly spring, summer coming in hot in phoenix, arizona. our affiliate reporting that dangerous heat. >> the temperature has reached or exceeded 110 degrees for seven straight days. temperatures on the pavement can reach 150 degrees, and that can cause first-degree burns on the human skin in a matter of seconds. >> buddy? can you hear me, man? >> and near tucson, nearly released video capturing this helicopter rescue by customs and border protection after two people were suffering from heat stress. some of you will say, come on, it's summer. fort myers, florida, won't say that, because, for the last two and a half years, every month save one has been above average. heat advisories north of us, jacksonville 107, still hot in texas. birmingham, 93. the feels like in philadelphia, 95. that's going to stick for the next couple weeks. we are talking a real heat wave.

120 countries have banned their use and there is unease. the bombs that initially explode once deployed. but the u.s. said they would be selective, and they would be especially useful to helping ukraine's counteroffensive uprooting dug-in russian positions. >> we would carefully select rounds with lower dud rates for which we have recent testing data. >> in the sky over syria, tensions between the u.s. and russia heighten. new provocations of russian jets facing down an american reaper drones for the second day running. one dropping parachute flares directly into the flight path of the u.s. reaper. u.s. officials calling that reckless. russia claims american drones are flying to areas where they operate in syria, a claim the pentagon calls ridiculous. this latest incident comes less than 24 hours after three russian fighter jets flew recklessly close, say u.s. officials, to three american reapers, also over syria. they are flying unmanned aircraft against isis targets.

officials said newark firefighters never trained to fight a fire aboard a ship without passengers. the ship's owner says there's nothing hazardous aboard, but this morning there is a 30-foot sheen on the water. flags in new jersey are at half-staff in memory of the two men who paid the ultimate sacrifice. >> i keep having the images of two firefighters being lowered down from a pulley. no words to describe the courage i saw. >> officials say this fire could burn for days. it is still not known how it started, but the ship's owner is promising a full investigation, and the firefighters will conduct a review on why it was decided to have them rush in when the entire 28 member crew had already gotten out. rebecca? >> such a toll and so many questions still unanswered. aaron katersky, thank you for joining us. we turn to the latest jobs report said to be released this morning. it could be a hint as to whether

the federal reserve will keep raising interest rates, making things like your credit cards more expensive. elizabeth schulze is in washington with the very latest. good morning, elizabeth. >> good morning, rebecca. the wall street and federal reserve is laser focused on this report. analysts expect 40,000 jobs were added to the american workforce in june. that was below expectations and is a slow-down from 339,000 in may. but month after month, hiring has been defying expectations. this is putting investors on edge. the dow jones dropped 36 points, about 1% is today, marking its workstations may after a survey of private companies showed stronger-than-expected hiring, especially in the leisure and hospitality industry. the big concern is that a hot jobs market will lead to higher wages and inflation, and force the fed to raise interest rates again after a pause in june. that would of course make

it more expensive to get a mortgage or path your credit card debt. >> elizabeth, you know this is just a ripple effect. it makes your credit cards more expensive, mortgages get more expensive, potentially. your bills to get a new car get more expensive every time this goes up, so a strong jobs market but not necessarily great for borrowers. thank you so much for joining us. michael? >> thank you, rebecca. turning now to the new details on a cruise ship that crashed into a pier while docking. more than 4,000 people were on board. the coast guard is now investigating. will carr is in san francisco with the latest. >> good morning, michael. passengers described a jarring impact. that ship was supposed to be on its way to alaska this morning, but crews have been working overnight welding the hull the base of the ship

and authorities are trying to figure out what went wrong. investigating why that princess cruise liner crashed into a san francisco pier while docking, dashing the hull and smashing the dock. >> anyone involved in the mooring as the ship was approaching its berth and pier will be interviewed. >> it was just wrapping up a round trip cruise to alaska and was attempting to dock when it smashed into the pier on thursday morning. >> we were spinning pretty quick to be that close to the dock, and i was midship, portside, and we smacked into the dock. >> he was one of 3300 guests and nearly 1200 crew members on board the ship when it made contact. the coast guard also investigating whether choppy waters may have contributed to the incident. >> yesterday the captain was talking about how he goes into docks and how unpredictable the currents are. >> but some passengers still willing to board the ship for a scheduled 4:00 p.m. departure. >> i'm going. [laughs] i'm still going! we have looked for to this for too long. >> some passengers staying in good spirits as they are waiting for the coast guard to give the all clear, and everybody here is thankful that nobody was injured.

push and what lifeguards are now being trained to do, after a string of shark attacks here in new york. trevor ault is in rockaway beach, new york, with the very latest. good morning, trevor. >> good morning, rebecca. you know, humans are not the only creatures on earth experiencing these record warm temperatures. warmer waters mean sharks are now comfortable swimming in places that some might find too close for comfort. the lifeguards are now taking a bird's-eye view to keep watch. >> this morning, new video of sharks hunting down schools of fish in the hamptons. it comes as authorities up and down the east coast are warning of a new reality. >> over this fourth of july weekend, we had five shark-related incidents in suffolk county. this makes it clear that what we are looking at is likely a new normal here. >> officials stressed this isn't a passing trend. the sharks are not going away. >> shark bites and shark

incidents are something that we are going to have to be addressing on a more regular basis, and are simply going to be part of the routine of what we do out here every day. >> new york state parks releasing this video showing more than 50 sharks off the coast of long island on tuesday. beaches are now taking action, training lifeguards to use drones to check for shark activity, as well as encouraging more use of jet skis to patrol the immediate area. and, to give you some perspective, according to the international shark attack file, since the 1830s there's only been 20 confirmed shark attacks in new york. four of them were confirmed just this week, and there's still plenty of summer swimming left. guys? >> trevor, like you said in that piece, this is not a passing trend, so be careful out there. thank you so much for that. we are going to turn now to lotto fever, it's heating up. the mega millions and powerball jackpots soaring to more than a billion dollars.

hailed as heroes for saving another boy from drowning in the swimming pool. we will hear from all three of them. we are here with their story. >> it's unconscionable, a summer day at the pool that nearly turns tragic as a young child is on the verge of drowning. but enter the heroes of the story. young themselves, brave and situationally aware beyond their years, helping to save a life. >> i saw him, and i just knew he wasn't okay. >> this morning, an abc news exclusive. this video is harrowing, but the outcome is happy. a day at the pool nearly turning tragic for a michigan family. >> i just wanted to prove myself. like, yeah, i can actually swim and stuff. >> that's 7-year-old griffin emerson, seen here playing in the shallow end of his apartment pool. drifting toward the deep end, he struggles to keep his head above water. at first, the other people around him don't seem to notice. almost a full minute goes by, griffin sinking to the bottom. then... >> i saw him at the bottom of the pool, and i didn't know if he was just playing down there

proprietary secrets that were taken, and used. part of the problem is twitter is not known as an engineering marvel. it's not known for having a ton of proprietary technology. so the question is going to be, exactly what are you alleging was stolen, and how was it used? >> now, these trade secrets cases can result in huge payouts. could this threat result in meta doing anything differently in how they operate? >> they could be billions of dollars, these cases. there have been billion-dollar cases, trade secret cases. look, you have to believe that meta was expecting that this could happen. you have to believe that they were prepared for a possible lawsuit like this. so i do not expect anything differently immediately, but we will have to see what the next step is. >> dan, there have also been a lot of twitter competitors out there already and none of them were sued. what are the chances this actually goes to trial or become something? >> we have to first make sure it

and job growth as part of its fight against inflation. this report could keep the fed on track to hike interest rates when it meets this month, which would of course make it more expensive to take out a mortgage or to pay off your credit card debt. whit? >> all right, something to watch. elizabeth schulze, thank you. to the white house now, and the biden administration laying down a new plan to crack down on surprise medical bills and certain kinds of short-term health insurance. rachel scott has the details for us. rachel, good morning. >> hey, whit. good morning to you. this has been a priority for president biden, and today he will roll out another part of his plan. the focus cracking down on those short-term insurance plans, or those so-called junk plans, given the nickname because they lack comprehensive coverage often leaving people with pre-existing conditions, surprised with thousands of dollars in medical bills for things they thought would be covered by their insurance. so today the president will announce a rule that would limit short-term plans to just eight months, require plans to disclose their limits of

coverage, including to existing customers, and push providers to disclose extra charges like facility fees. now, we know this is a top issue for voters, no doubt the president will be out here touting this on the campaign trail. his challenge, it'll take time for americans to start to feel the impact. just take one example, the administration says this morning that the president's cap on out-of-pocket prescription drug costs will save nearly 19 million seniors $400 a year, but that law does not go into effect until 2025, whit. >> and, rachel, while we have you, i want to talk about a different story getting attention here. what is the latest in the investigation on the cocaine found at the white house? >> whit, we know secret service has been combing through surveillance video and video logs trying to get to the bottom of all of this. sources say that cocaine was found inside of a small bag, in a cubby near the entrance of the west wing. this is typically an area where visitors are asked to leave their cell phones or electronics before continuing on with the rest of the tour.

[laughs] >> sure, why not? a lot of mixed signals coming from the housing market. decode this for us and what it means. >> we talk about this a lot, and viewers ask about this all the time. what's happening in the housing market is just frustrating. if you're a buyer or thinking about selling, it is frustrating because mortgage rates. they've gotten very expensive. 30-year fixed-rate mortgage now above 7%. with interest rates going up, that demand for mortgages is going down, and mortgage rates are now the highest they've been since last may. the issue, if you are trying to buy, there just isn't even inventory out there. >> i was just going to say. >> if you want to buy a house,

you can barely find a house, lara, and a lot of people get frustrated because that leads to bidding wars. even though you wouldn't call this market hot, it's hard to buy because of the fact that mortgages are so expensive and there are so few houses on the market. >> what is that telling us about the real estate market? >> it's just very tight and it's going to be tight for a while. what you saw in terms of the amount of homes for sale, it's down 26% from 2022. 29% from 2019. people aren't putting their houses on the market, because in order to sell your house, you then have to buy, and there's nothing out there, and you have to pay the mortgage rate. so we are waiting, really, for new inventory to come on the market. that's homebuilders building out new inventory. again, there's this backlog because of what happened in the pandemic. they weren't building as much, and there is a ways to go before that imbalance takes place. >> what's the bottom line then if someone's out there looking? >> the bottom line -- and this is frustrating information, but you have to think about this through your own lens. can you afford it? are you planning to stay there for a long enough time? you have to think about your top

help teens respond appropriately to their peers. we thought that would be a great thing for us to implement into our health program. i think it gives them a way to talk about mental health, hopefully take away some of that stigma that we hear or that we know about mental health. >> the program assists teen by providing them with an action plan, first by identifying the challenges they are experiencing and then discovering the tools they may already have at their disposal to fix things. it's helping students like mason peck, a graduating senior at alta-aurelia high school. mason says the program is making a huge difference in his life. >> during the program, we were thinking about negative thoughts, positive thoughts, how often you would tell yourself a negative thought. i noticed myself worrying less about uncertainty in my life. >> sophomore lily schillenberg says the program has made her more confident in talking about mental health.
