pertaining to be someone you're not, wearing medals and ribbons you never earned, sometimes for respect or bragging rights, other times for money. wertheim is the real deal. >> you're not going to the navy, you are going to the marine corps. dan: he was among the first 20,000 african americans to serve in the marines, the last branch of the u.s. military to integrate. they trained at montford point, a swampy section of camp lejeune, north carolina. an abc documentary spotlighted the contributions of these men in world war ii. >> with the united states now fighting a war in europe and the south pacific, the decision came for the montford point marines to be deployed overseas. wortham fea we could possibly make the ultimate sacrifice, and for those of us who lived through it, thank god for it. dan: reverend fears is proud o

the stripes he received as sergeant first class and would not think to wear medals he did not earn. wortham fears: i cannot understand, the victory medal, others, those are the ones i am entitled to. larry: the key figures in the montford point marines association have been lying about the records. >> i served in places, was t at the end of vietnam. dan: one told stories about serving in vietnam during an appearance with a nonprofit. >> i saved a lot of people, and when i came home in norfolk, virginia, i was called a "baby killer." spencer: i confronted johnson with the military records i obtained under the freedom of information act, and he admitted he never served in vietnam. >> i misspoke. i was wrong for saying that.

dan: you did not misspeak, you made up a story, correct? >> that would be correct, sir. dan: you understand that people who serve and the families of those who actually served in vietnam and died, this is a great insult to them did you get that, right? y i do, sir. dan: but there is more -- >> when i was 39 years old, i went to desert storm. dan: johnson claimed to serve in the gulf war and wore a vietn hat. >> we accomplished, we came back, and we survived. dan: he wore medals and ribbons saying he wore boots on the ground in the middle east when he actually remade in california. how did you get the ribbon, actually? did you purchase it online? >> the ribbons were done online, yes, at a shop in san diego. dan: at the end of a campaign, at the end of your service, you don't buy it online, your superiors give it to you at the

end of your service to >> at would be correct yes, i was wrong for that. dan: i began looking into the montford point marines association, at the urging of james brown, a veteran out of sam carlos. james: some of those are montford point marines, and it took them years to have the country, you know, recognize their service and recognize their fight and their struggle, and now this guy puts all of them at risk? dan: i watched as brown confronted billy ray's zimmerman, western legion public officer, note the misspelling. >> welcome this remarkable man to the stage, sergeant billy r zimmerman. dan: in public appearances, zimmerman claims to have a 25 year in the core as a drill instructor and sergeant major, with a rack of metals he wore, even while meeting the commandant of the marine or,

including one for being injured in combat, another for valor in desert storm. >>, so that is your did what about your bronze star? >> the radioman got hit to it i went back to get him, that's when i got hit, even with that injury, everybody's saving my unit. dan: even after brown repeatedly pressed zinnerman his story. james: all of my career, verifiable. you may need to go and do your research again. dan: he is what he provided several veterans groups when he sought admission, the different typeface on his name, somebody awards apparently cut and pasted. then i use the freedom of information act, showing the marines discharged zinnerman due to misconduct, frequent, private first css, not a drill instructor or major, i did not

earn any of those metals he earned -- war, even to a funeral of a real montford point marines. after we asked questions, the national office of the montford marine association expelled zinnerman and allowed michael johnson to resign. why is it important to expose these, do you think? >> it is important for the people who actually earned those metals. anytime someone fraud, it allows americans to question, oh, is this another fraud? dan: just yesterday, i learned the president of montford point western region, sergeant major charles cook, also were medals he did not earn a three presidential unit citations, two combat action ribbons, and a vietnam gallantry medal. did you ever served in combat, actually? >> no. dan: in an interview, cook

claims he never saw combat and claimed it was a mistake when he buys his metals, a mistake he did not catch. >> it was not a mistake, i did not verify my medals from the organization that put them together for me. dan: i do not think people are going to buy that you did not know what you are wearing on your chest. >> i did not say i did not know, i said i did not check it. and i concur with you. dan: i've learned the fbi assigned two agents to investigate all of this, which could be a violation of the federal stolen valor act. larry: the wars took place several years ago, that it is hard to verify, but the unmitigated gall to fabricate these stories is unbelievable. dan: they are making appearances on behalf of these organizations and talking to veterans, and they somehow got by until now. larry: it is great to hear you

video. it may be disturbing to some pure here is abc 7 news reporter lena howland. >> richmond police department, search warrant, opened the door! lena: hours after arresting jose martinez for brandishing a weapon on two occasions, richmond police got a search warrant for his home. they went looking for his other firearms while he was in custody. police knew that his roommate, 66 euros kevin mcdonald, lived there. >> richmond police department. can you hear me? lena: once inside, officers announced their presence multiple times. >> this is the richmond police department! make yourself known! door, which is where they found mcdonald sitting on a bed. they say he was armed with a loaded ar-15 rifle. >> richmond police! show me your hands! [gunfire] lena: the chief of police said mcdonald pointed the rifle at

officers, and that is when police shot and killed mcdonald. once inside, officers found a bizarre scene, a mannequin dressed like a soldier, ready for combat, with a firearm around his neck, pictures on the wall that depict the same thing come up with shelves upon shelves of equipment and multiple weapons, undisputed -- unsecured. 53 firearms were recovered from the home. police say 48 of them were in mcdonald's bedroom, and some them were ghost guns p there was gun making equipment in the home. >> rounds of ammunition were recovered, a live pineapple hand grenade, and gun manufacturing equipment were all recovered. pronounced dead on scene. the homeowner, an elderly female relative of mcdonald, was also home when this happened but was not hurt or injured. >> we have no information regarding a large cache of weapons that we also really found in the house. the only information we had was that mr. martinez did illegally

possess three additional firearms, and the original extent was to go through those firearms in his bedroom. lena: back in the neighborhood were six bullet holes of the wall of the suspect's bedroom can be found outside. a neighbor was shocked to find the details. pat: it appears to me that maybe it was appropriate, considering how many weapons he had, and what was his plan? lena: police say at this point it is not clear if mcdonald was selling weapons out of the home as far as what mcdonald could have been planning before the shooting, the atf is now investigating, and richmond police say the two officers involved are lucky to be alive. >> it speaks for itself could you can see the weapons that are in plain view and readily accessible to mr. mcdonald. we are very grateful lena: lena: they were not injured.

news on the ruby princess cruise ship delay as you can see from this life picture, it is still stuck import in san francisco. that ship was scheduled to set sail yesterday, but damage from a crash into a pier changed all of that, and passengers learned they will not be heading out until sunday. dion: now they are being offered refunds, and some are now deciding whether to get off that ship. for the very latest, let's get to abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard, who was there when that announcement was made. i can imagine not a lot of happy folks here. cornell: you are right. lots of frustration. a dream vacation quickly turning into a nightmare for more than 3000 passengers on board the ruby princess, which is now more than 24 hours late, leasing -- leaving san francisco for alaska. the ship will not be leaving until sunday. >> we at 4:00 p.m. on sunday, july 9,

and we will have the new itinerary and the compensation being offered is being delivered to your state rooms shortly. if you would prefer not to accept the new itinerary, we will be offering the option to cancel. cornell: that was the captain, killing more than 3000 passengers about the delay due to repairs which are not expected to be done until at least saturday. the ship made unexpected contact with the dark -- the dock on thursday, creating a hole in the hull. the ship has received several inspections. passengers are being given some options to stay on the ship or return on sunday, or cancel altogether and get a refund. currently, many passengers are upset, not happy with how their shortened cruise vacation to alaska is turning out. >> no glacier bay, no

no things you pay for. what happens if the ship does not leave on sunday? what if something else happened? i feel sorry for the people on the ship who live in different states, countries. it is just a bad deal. it is leaving a bad taste in my mouth. cornell: that man is from concord, and we have heard some announcements recently. we are told that if the captain telling passengers for the inconvenience and he said people can come and go to check out san francisco, but some folks have traveled across country. they cannot really pack up and leave and go back home. they are going to stick it out and head to alaska on sunday, hope lee. live in san francisco, cornell barnard, abc 7. dion: emphasis on "hopefully." larry: it around pure will people get full refunds and credits? obviously, their vacations, many of them, just ruined. cornell: yeah. lots of information from

princess cruise lines. in fact, we just got the email recently, i will read it to you, guests who cancel their crews will receive a 100% refund of their crews fair, -- cruise fare, plus a 50% credit as long as a bucket by february 20 24. guests who stay on board and go to alaska with the cruise will receive a 75% refund and a 75% future cruise credit. so clearly the cruise line trying to make good, trying to give passengers as many options as they can, but many passengers say it is not enough. dion: it will be interesting to see their reactions, whether they take it or not. we will be following this story. cornell, thank you. get ready for weekend details -- detours on i-80. starting thiseekend through july 21, eastbnd 8 between valeo and hercules will be closed for a repaving project.

westbound lanes will also be closed over the weekend. larry: protesters in san francisco our time to stop the expansion of those self-driving car's in the city, so they are going round and placing cones, traffic cones, on the hood of the cars, and that causes them to stop. it is happening ahead of next week's vote by the state public utilities or not to allow cruz and wei mo -- waymo the city. >> there is still something fundamentally unsafe moving at speed with a metal box in the city. expanded and basically unfettered access to the city is a really bad idea. larry: according to the grou placing a cone on the car's hood disables it. it also sends a message they feel the cars are a traffic hazard, so they are putting a stop to them in their own unique way to we will see how this all

plays out. clearly self-driving technology is not where they hoped it would be at this point. dion: clearly, based off of videos of them stopping, malfunctioning. [laughter] larry: yes, a lot of videos. dion: looking ahead to the weekend. larry: we are getting there, sandhya patel. sandhya: this traffic pattern is certainly like summer, no doubt about it, and we are definitely getting there. the weekend looks nice, larry and dion. let's take a live look at that cruise ship from our kgo roof camera. blue skies surrounding that ship. gusty winds, you will notice in. 40 mile an hour sustained wind coming off the cool ocean water right now in san francisco, gusts to 30 at sfo. . you will notice even places like concord gusting to 29 miles an hour. with this pattern, we have seen temperatures today remaining below where they should be by july standards. low 60's to low 80's, anywhere from a few degrees to 11 degrees below average.

dion: this year, san francisco is celebrating 150 years of cable cars in the city. the first successful cable car had its first run back in 1873. more lines were added over the years. larry: now, there's only three left. and there's a lot of upkeep, just to keep these cars running. abc 7 news reporter luz pena got a special look at what it takes to restore them, and she joins us now in the newsroom.

luz: it is truly a magical place with so much history. it can take carpenters one year to two years to restore a cable car. the one they currently working on is 130 years old. in an unassuming building in san francisco is a workshop full of history. welcome to the sfmta carpentry shop. this is where cable cars are born and brought back to life. rick: they've survived earthquakes, fires, depression, you know, and they just keep trundling up and down the hills. luz: every piece built by hand and assembled here. keeping them on the tracks is a labor of love. these are not only carpenters, but some may call them historians. >> this car arrived here about a year and a half ago. luz: to honor their history, this year, san francisco is celebrating 150 years of cable cars, opening the doors of their

carpentry shop to the public could when we got here, the tour was sold out, with 50 people in line. rose: i don't think they let anybody enter this is only the first friday of the month for three months, and this is the second one, so one more time i think in august, and that is going to be at. luz: we start with the youngest cable car enthusiast on the core -- tour. can you believe the cable car is 150 years old? rory: it looks like old. luz: cable cars were the first real technological investigation in the history of san francisco. many followed after that, like the pewter spit we chatted with young karina, who was happy about both. what did you think when your mom told you you got tickets to come to the tour? carina: coding things that i was going to do, but it is fun to get out

and turn off the screen for a while. luz: this shop is like a time machine, and despite the centuries that have gone by, the cable car brakes remain the same. >> there are three sets of brakes. they are very high-tech. luz: wood! as of this morning, the faultlines were restored and issues with the automated dispatching system were also resolved. >> the latest now from oakland. >> thursday afternoon, oakland announced a power outage impacting 911 calls to its emergency call center. >> think about the basic of human needs, the little kid calling. >> she owns the newly opened feel more social. she's a resident who ran for city council. she's concerned a basic feature is at risk. >> that is hard for the resident who need them in that moment to experience. it is very traumatic to know someone is not coming. >> it took 10 minutes to restore caller access by routing 911 calls to the alameda county sheriff's office. as of friday morning, all lines were restored. the issue comes after a recent grand jury report highlighted

major concerns at oakland's emergency communication center. the report claims the 911 call center is not prepared for a major disaster. it also states there's not enough staff to answer all 911 calls and it is in dire need of technology upgrades. >> we have to have system changes. this is a system change not just on the systems of policies, but also on technology systems. in the middle of the bay area, silicon valley, we shouldn't have the issues we are having. >> oakland police officers association blasting oakland's mayor and the city. raising concerns about why the backup generators allegedly failed during the power outage. the association president says little confidence in mayor townsend's administration's response. >> it is people's lives, safety, livelihoods, economic

possessions. also their livelihoods to get to work. >> the mayor tells abc7 news she's monitoring what is happening. adding her administration inherited these problems. she said the new city budget allocates millions of dollars of staff and upgraded i.t. infrastructure to make it more resilient to potential attacks. dion: governor newsom has announced he won't ask the supreme court to block parole from charles manson follower leslie bowne hound. it means she can be freed in two weeks after parole. the appeals court ruled she should be released, citing extraordinary rehab efforts. she's also been recommended for parole five times since 2016. governors rejected the recommendations. she's been in prison for more than 50 years for her role in two murders ordered by manson. >> the men suspected of stabbing

another fan at a levi's stadium soccer match appeared in court for the first time. dustin dorsey spoke with the victim as his alleged attacker faced the judge. >> alejandro garcia appeared in court for the first time since allegedly stabbing a man at a soccer match last sunday. alejandro garcia-villanueva faces three counts of assault with a deadly weapon following a brawl that nearly killed diaz and injured two others. >> anc incredibl frightening incident in front of children and families. he stabbed the victim with a deadly weapon. clearly aiming at the neck or the head level. >> back in his san jose he's recovering physically and emotionally from his wounds. >> i am happy for the public's help detaining him. hopefully he will pay as he tried to kill me. he was to kill someone.

imagine if he was walking around the street. >> alejandro garcia-villanueva will not be on the streets anytime soon. the judge says he should remain in custody with no bail, saying he poses a risk to the community. diaz wishes he could have be at the courthouse. >> i want to see what he was charged with. but i'm not in condition to move around. i have a lot of anger going through my head. i would not forgive him. i want to know why he did it. why he tried to kill me. >> he said he's doing better little by little. he warned others before the fight about alejandro garcia-villanueva, but nothing was being done. he's now considering legal action. he's not sure he will want to attend a game again. >> i would think you the truth. i played soccer and i have never seen anything like this where they don't inspect you. imagine going through security and these things get through. >> levi's stadium are conducting

the internal investigation into how the knife got past security in the events that landed alejandro garcia-villanueva in jail. his next court appearance will be august 18. in san jose, dustin dorsey. >> amen police found shot jose last month has died. he was found shot near dixieroa. he was taken to a local hospital with life-ening injuries and died from those injuries. police have not released his identity. shooting remains under investigation. >> lawmakers want to know who is behi a land grab near travis air force base. according to a wall street jo investigation, the group has purchased $1 billion of land in the past two years. he's now the largest landowner in solano county. officials are concerned the group could be masking foreign owners. the air force's foreign investment risk review office

dion: the labor department released the june jobs report. it shows a solid month of hiring nationwide. employees added 200,000 jobs last month. the unemployment rate fell from 3.7% to 3.6%. the lowest level in five decades. the number of jobs in

government, health care, social assistance, and construction increased. wall street reacted to the report today. the red-hot labor market is storing fears the federal reserve will hike interest rates once again. that means stocks slide. more than 187 points to close the 33,734. nasdaq down. s&p 500 plunged nearly 30%. larry: santa clara county leaders unveiled the bold initiative to help homeless teenagers. they announced a program that will provide a guaranteed income for on housed students after high school. it will launch summer and provide a $1200 monthly stipend to 50 homeless students. >> these target programs p solid financial footing for a limited time, typically. as folks transition into

aspect of life, a more productive life. with students, it typically means education or career. >> it will essentially maintain federally mandated benefits students received while in high school. dion: california is spending almost $160 million to keep lower income residents in affordable homes. governor newsom says the grants will preserve 638 homes for up to 55 years. the program extends loan maturity dates, provides new low interest loans to rehabilitate housing, and supports short-term housing subsidies. four bay area housing providers received the money. the chinatown community center in san francisco. housing for units in alameda and santa clara. and community support network in sonoma county. back after this.
