it happened at the powell street station. one woman entered the track way for unknown reasons. that is when she was hit. police and fire crews responded and removed the woman from the track way. she was taken to the hospital and her condition is not known. while the incident happened, another person fainted. they never entered the track way. california is seeing what is believed to be the first fentanyl murder conviction. it is connected to a placer county case in which a 15 girl died -- a 15-year-old girl died. tara campbell explains this could mean more convictions in california, including here in san francisco. >> internal is everywhere and it is deadly. reporter: placer county district attorney morgan geyer warning drug dealers -- >> if they choose to continue their behavior and sell and kill, the consequences will increase and they will be severe. reporter: friday, making good on

the promise. the d.a.'s office confirming a man has been convicted of second-degree murder in connection with the death of a 15-year-old girl who overdosed in roseville last summer. it is believed to be the first such conviction in california. >> this could be a watershed moment in the war on fentanyl. reporter: stephen clark is a legal analyst and former district attorney. >> the fact that there was a conviction sends a message to people dealing fentanyl that you could pay with being in jail the rest of your life. reporter: the key to these cases is proving the dealer knew they were selling fentanyl and that it was deadly. >> the prosecution will say anyone dealing fentanyl has a disregard for human life. that is the key to getting a second-degree murder conviction. >> he says expected to see more murder convictions. >> you will see more these cases

being brought because the traditional drug laws have not been enough to stop people from selling fentanyl and it is a national health crisis. reporter: san francisco's district attorney is clear that her office is ready to hold drug dealers accountable for murder. the legality of an unprecedented risk and we must do everything you hold drug dealers accountable. we have to send a strong message in the community and in the courtroom that we will not stand by and allow dealers to kill innocent people and those suffering with addiction. those with loved ones caught in crisis, the conviction offering hope of getting drug dealers off the streets. >> they are preying on vulnerable people. number one, people addicted to drugs, those that need to drugs. you have a subset of dealers preying on kids and on children on snapchat. reporter: tammy morgan lives in

placer county. her son is on the streets of san francisco addicted to fentanyl. >> he is caught up devastation and it is heartbreaking. it is slowly killing him. gloria: hosting a series of opioid prediction workshops. they will be held in county libraries that carry a supply of narcan. participants who completed the training will be given a free narcan kit while supplies last. the first kickoff is tonight at 2:00 p.m. the workshops run through september 9. in south bay, the mayor of san jose announced a new plan to help develop a global ai based system to prevent pedestrian related deaths and injuries on the roadways. >> san jose is grappling with pedestrian safety and working on

our plan to make our fees safe. last year we lost far too many residents in her city. gloria: mayor matt mahan is asking software developers who want to help to submit a proposal. he is hoping a systems will be able to detect the strands during the days and nights. participants can get up to $3000 in catchphrases. the new effort gets underway as yesterday a pedestrian was hit and killed on san jose roads. thousands of people are expected to flock to san jose. it is for the city's festival celebrating all things japanese culture. abc7 software reporter southbay reporter ellen m has what makes this special. reporter: the annual festival in japan town is coming together. ken has been going sin a child. >> my chair -- my parents find

gloria: san jose has been ordered to instill documents on the google schedule -- pink poodle scandal. it relates to a woman seen getting out of any on-duty firetruck and going into a strip club. it comes after mercury news sued the city in may pop refusing to release records -- in may for refusing to release records. the man suspected of stabbing another fan at a soccer match appeared in court friday.

alejandra echelon drove hundred -- he faces three counts of assault with a deadly weapon following the brawl and newly killed diaz. now back in his san jose home diaz is recovering from those injuries. >> i am happy for the public's help in detaining him. hopefully he will pay for this since he tried to kill me. if he takes them back to the stadium, he wants to kill someone. imagine if he was walking around the street. gloria: levi's stadium is conducting an staycation into how that got past security. a judge ordered he remain in custody without bail. he will be back in court on august 18. 's -- oakland's 911 is back online after going off-line on thursday. the 911 issue was fixed by friday morning.

the automated dispatching system was not repaired until friday afternoon. it comes after a recent grand jury reports major concerns at oakland's emergency communication center. now residents say they are worried. >> think about the basics of human needs, the kid who is calling. that is hard for residents who need them in that morning to experience. it is hard to know someone is not coming. gloria: work is being done to enforce emergency dispatch systems so this does not happen again. santa clara county leaders unveiled what they are calling a bold initiative to help homeless teenagers. they introduced a program that will provide in a guaranteed income for on housed students after high school. the program will launch next summer. it will provide a $1200 stipend to 50 homeless students. >> these target programs provide a solid financial footing for a limited time as folks

that will change later today. here's a shot from emeryville across the bay into san francisco. you see low clouds, that marine layer. temperatures generally in the 50's. oakland, 55. palo alto, 51 degrees. we are seeing lots of blue skies over san jose with a view patchy clouds. in santa rosa, that is one of our coolest spots. santa rosa temperatures have dropped down to 47 degrees. novato, 52. concord and livermore, 54 degrees. as we show you a view from mount tam, you see those clouds in the distance. the camera is shaking a little bit. we have areas of low clouds and fog this morning and temperatures will be cooler than average. it is going to be windy in the afternoon. the summer heat returns next week. if you like it hot, it is on the way.

wind gusts will be picking up throughout the morning into the afternoon hours. here is the animation forecast, 31 miles per hour. by 4:00, it gets especially in san francisco at 34 miles per hour. the winds will be pushing to the east bay and the ultimate pass. it starts to die down this evening but the winds pick up tomorrow afternoon. we will be dealing with low clouds during the morning hours. by this afternoon, plenty of sunshine for everybody. the winds will help clear the clouds except along the peninsula coast where we have partly cloudy conditions throughout the day and then winds help push the clouds back in and we have normal fog overnight. if you are headed to the giants game, i would bring an extra layer. temperatures stay in the low 60's with breezy conditions. highs today will be closer to

yesterday's numbers. 50's at the beaches to near 80 and that. temperatures well below average inland. tonight, the clouds move back in with temperatures dropping into the 50's. tomorrow morning, maybe up her 40's in the north bay. the accuweather 7-day forecast shows windy below average conditions, holding that pattern through tomorrow. the warming begins on monday, heating up midweek near 100 degree heat. the bay area, near the 80's. it is going to get hot again and in san francisco we could see 70's. gloria: the breeze this weekend is pretty much all over the bay area. frances: and that is what is helping us stay below average. gloria: that always makes my allergies flareup. frances: [laughter] yes it does but luckily tree pollen is moderate right now.

gloria: santa clara county will hold its standdown event for veterans. over 64,000 veterans will get access to over 50 providers and sources. the eventual offer free food, health sketch -- haircuts, and legal services. the goal is to connect veterans to benefits they have earned from serving. veteran service officials hope to get -- to give them support. >> we don't have that kind of community here, that kind of base here, but the residents here and the board of supervisors are solidly behind their veterans. gloria: the event starts today, it goes through sunday.

if you go to any beach in the bay area this summer, you will likely find tourists taking pictures. one group is doing more than just taking selfies. as dan ashley discovered, they are documenting changes that could have a profound affect on how we manage our coastline. reporter: as they sift through the stands on the coastline, you could say this team from the california academy of sciences is taking a snapshot of climate change, or at least its effect on visitors. >> this is a turkish towel, a type of seaweed. definitely there have been so many varieties of seaweed. reporter: the team is documenting the various life forms that got -- that dot coastline, adding to a bigger picture. >> we have been doing this eight years. we can compare this year to all the years that gone by. reporter: dr. johnson directs the center for diversity she

says the beach survey is a national project done snapshot cal coast. it's goal is to build a kind of living database and along the coastline. a mission that is especially intriguing this year with a predicted return of el niño. >> during el niño or after el niño we tend to get warmer water species, species from southern california moving north. reporter: figuring out what is on the move is turning into a full-time job. researchers have documented juvenile great white sharks migrating from one water nursery habitats in southern california to waters near monterey bay. another predator sunflowers he starts, nearly vanished. their loss triggered a publishing explosion in see urgent's -- see urgent's

officer shot and killed a man in the bedroom of a home. he was a roommate of someone who had been arrested for brandishing a weapon. police had a search warrant and as they went room by room, they found kevin mcdonald was pointing a loaded rifle at officers. police found three guns in the home, 48 of those were in his bedroom. officers also say there was gun making equipment in the home. we talked to a neighbor who believes the deadly shooting was justified. >> it appears to me that maybe it was appropriate considering how many weapons he had and what was his plan. gloria: the home is elderly female relative of mcdonald. she was home when this happened but was not hurt or otherwise involved.

oakland police officers are starting a new effort they believe will help combat crime as part of a larger citywide effort. officers are patrolling on foot in a neighborhood they see -- they say has seen an uptick in crime. our reporter walked with officers as they worked to keep people safe and help build a better bay area. >> patrolling open for the past eight years but now he has a new role. >> it is busy. calls and calls and priorities. you try to take the time to talk to people. reporter: he is part of the new foot patrol team covering an area between the oakland coliseum and the oakland airport. it is a strategy the police department hopes will help fight crime. >> it gives us a chance to meet people, businesses, try to come up with a plan on how we can all tackle this situation together. reporter: the situation in east oakland is that crime is of.

according to the oakland police department, burglaries in the city are up 20% since last year. auto burglaries are up 27%. >> that is why we are out here trying to prevent auto burglaries. reporter: part of the strategy, hoping high visibility service a deterrent. signs are posted to remind customers to take safety -- take safety precautions, but that doesn't always work. especially in an area with a lot of travelers. >> they will come with a lot of luggage, not being familiar with the area. not knowing the crime trends, there will be belongings in the cars. >> we got a sign out here last week. we will be out here more. reporter: the owner of the philly's best cheesesteaks to customers want, if they don't feel safe. she hopes added security will be a boost for a business. >> it is very important, especially their walking and

gloria: a new jersey cargo ship fire that killed six firefighters and injured others is expected to burn for several more days. the main issue is getting enough water on those flames which first ignited on wednesday. the injured firefighters have been released from the hospital. seven republican attorneys general are pushing back on target's pride month campaign claiming the company violated child protection laws. they accused it of promoting gender and sexual identity among children. the humans rights campaign called it in another attempt bully anyone who values diversity. the department of labor released its monthly jews -- monthly job report.

the country added 9000 jobs. experts say this is not alarming , but the slowest job growth since december of 2020. jobs health care, social assistance, and construction. the unemployment rate dropped 3.3% last month but it is still near a 50 year low. president biden credits his administrative efforts for that job growth. pres. biden: today's jobs report shows biden gloria: experts say this should be watched because it could incite inflation. self-driving car's are becoming increasingly common on san francisco streets but the technology is far from perfect. we should do those cars stopped in the middle at -- the middle of street scum at stoplights, even crashing.

protesters have come up with new ways to stop cars. ryan spoke with a group that claims these cars are dangerous. >> no one is in it. reporter: marking autonomous vehicles as hazards, this crew is placing markers as a way to stop them. they want these cars off of road permanently. >> unfettered access to city streets is a bad idea. reporter: this person is a member of the street safe rebels and asked us not to share their identity. -- whether to allow expand their services. >> residents never got a chance to have a say in this and never consented to being used as guinea pigs. reporter: abc7 has documented issues with crews in weymouth. two cards installed near the pride parade, backing up
