it is rare, dangerous, and it's not over. catastrophic flooding swallowing new york's hudson valley just north of new york city. >> oh my god. >> a state of emergency in orange county. this family frantically trying to keep the water out of their home. >> please, make it stop! >> elsewhere in the same county, one woman was killed, swept away in those turbulent floodwaters. people driving on storm king highway dodging rushing waterfalls. dozens of roads closed. >> the focus today will be getting into those areas that were inaccessible during the storm. there were some road ways washed out in and around the village. we'll go door to door make sure everybody is safe. >> at the u.s. military academy west point, more than 8 inches of rain, most of it in just about six hours. cars, roads and homes submerged. >> every road that i go on, either there's power lines down, trees down, flooded.

this is radar estimates from eastern pennsylvania up here to orange county and rocklin county up into parts of connecticut. we will see more of this today. we already are. i'm seeing damage reports coming in from vermont. the flood watches go into maine. new hampshire is covered into it. michael, anticipate 4 to 6 inches. it only had to travel about 20 miles to get to all of this. >> wow, ginger. those images are just overwhelming. thank you so much for that. joining us now is new york orange county executive steve newhouse from one of the hardest hit areas from the flash floods. good morning. good morning, executive neuhaus. appreciate you joining us this morning. >> morning, michael. >> you and the governor have issued a state of emergency for orange county. can you tell us what the situation is right now? >> so right now thankfully the water has receded and we're able to get to people. last night was complete chaos.

i spoke to the governor in the afternoon and basically state police and new york state transportation were trying to get to us so anybody who was in highland falls or the ft. montgomery area was trapped in there. first responders did their best. we are trying to get to people to make sure they are okay. we have a couple power outages. we need to do an analysis of all the infrastructure. many roads and bridges have been washed out. that's basically what our priority is today, to try and get them and open up these major arteries. >> we know all the challenges you are trying to do your best to help everybody that's caught up in this. tragically, the remains of one person have been found. we hear there may be more people missing. what can you tell us about the search and rescue efforts? >> so right now we think that we've got everybody accounted for, but there's some people that could have been swept away. there was major flash flooding and the young lady that passed

away just got caught up with it. she and her family tried to evacuate their house. she crossed with a pet and lost her footing and, unfortunately was washed down into a ravine. so we believe that there are no more rescues to be found but if there were people that did not report it or call 911, those are folks that we're just making sure that fell through the cracks, to make sure everybody is accounted for. >> and what message do you have for people in your county? >> basically, if you are not essential worker, do not come to our area here at west point, ft. montgomery. we need to keep these roads open. we have a number of people that came out with cars and low profile cars driving in five feet of water and making it even more difficult for myself and my emergency management team to rescue people. >> just don't need anybody there just adding to all of the chaos and work that you're already dealing with.

executive steve neuhaus, thank you for joining us. appreciate your time. >> thank you, michael. now to the unrelenting heat. tens of millions suffering under triple digit temperatures, from coast to coast. victor oquendo is live from miami, one of the hottest places in the country. good morning, victor. >> reporter: good morning, michael. even by miami standards this is excessive. we are starting the week under another heat advisory. peak heat index ranging from 105 to 110. this is being felt from coast to coast. more than 35 million americans across six states on alert for the dangerous heat from here in florida to california. in phoenix they've reached 110 plus degrees for ten days straight. the record is 18. the national weather service warns this could be the worst heat wave ever for the area as they brace for a similar week ahead. it's been the hottest start to the year in places like del rio,

texas, tallahassee, ft. meyers, orlando, key west and miami. even the water behind me is hotter than normal, about three to five degrees above average for this time of year. and there is no relief in sight. george? >> can feel it. thanks very much. overseas to president biden in europe for a nato summit. he's meeting with king charles for the first time since he was crowned in may. elizabeth schulze is traveling with the president. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning, george. this is a major moment for president biden as he makes a push for european allies. it comes as a pivotal time for the nato alliance amid a fierce debate over whether ukraine should become a member. this morning president biden kicking off a three country trip to europe meeting with u.k. prime minister as he seeks to shore up support for ukraine ahead of a critical nato summit. >> i have been meeting with a close friend and greater ally. >> reporter: the president also set to meet with king charles for the first time since the monarch was crowned in may, a

symbolic visit to build their personal relationship and highlight the fight against climate change. at the heart of biden's trip is the two-day nato summit in lithuania where allies are divided over whether ukraine should become a member of the alliance. the president insists ukraine is not yet ready to join while it's at war with russia. >> i don't think there is unanimity about whether or not to bring ukraine into the nato family now at this moment in the middle of a war. >> reporter: at the nato summit, the president will have to defend his decision to send cluster munitions amid growing criticism from allies like canada, germany and spain. banned in more than 120 countries, cluster munitions scatter raining down smaller explosives, posing a deadly risk to civilians. ukraine said it needs to help now as its counter offensive grounds on.

the white house insists the cluster munitions will aid in the fight with ammunitions running low. >> we are trying to ramp up the shells they're using the most. that production rate is still not where we want to it be so we're going to send these additional artillery shells that have cluster bomblets in them to help bridge the gap as we ramp up production. >> reporter: another big question at the nato summit is whether there will be an agreement on sweden joining the alliance. that's been held up by turkey and hungary but president biden is pushing hard for a deal this week. george? >> last week we saw american drones over syria. they were surrounded by russian aircraft. now one of those drones killed an isis leader? >> reporter: that's right, george. the defense department said u.s. drones took out an isis leader as he was riding a motorcycle in syria friday night. this was just hours before when u.s. officials say russian aircraft had been harassing those same drones. it was just the latest example of what the u.s. is calling

unsafe and unprofessional behavior of russian fighter jets harassing american drones. george? >> elizabeth, thanks. linsey? now to the urgent manhundred for a murder suspect on the run after breaking out of jail in pennsylvania. police say he is an extremely self-taught survivalist. he has military experience. alex presha is in pennsylvania with the latest. >> reporter: this morning an urgent man hunt in pennsylvania for michael berham intensifies. pennsylvania state police say officers have located multiple stock piles or camp sites they believe he was using. they suspect he may be getting help. >> when i say there may be one or more individuals assisting him, that's part of that on going investigation. if they are, we will prosecute them. >> reporter: the self-taught survivalist is believed to be armed. he escaped from the warren county jail late thursday.

deputies say berham rapelled from the roof using bed sheets made into rope. multiple law enforcement agencies now widening their search by air and on foot. the mood here, uneasy. sunday night a 911 call led to an entire neighborhood being blocked off, a swat team going house to house. no sign of berma'am but authorities believe he may have broken into a country side home 16 miles north of the jail killing one of the couple's dogs and stealing men's clothes. >> very scary. keeping their community safe is very important. >> reporter: state police here say their goal is just to get berham back in custody. amount of force used is up to him. they're leaning on the public for tips offering a combined reward of $9,500 for information leading to arrest. michael? >> all right. thank you, alex. now to one of the biggest soccer stars, megan rapinoe said she will retire at the end of

good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, michael. over the past couple of years, orcas off the coast of spain and portugal have been body slamming boats, chewing off their rudders spawning speculations that the orcas might be out for revenge against humans. we went to one of the biggest orca habitats on the planet off the coast of canada and learned this might be more fad than feud. >> we lost both rudders. >> reporter: something is happening off the coast of spain and portugal. killer whales attacking sailing vessels. three boats have been sunk, dozens damaged over the past couple of years. these encounters spawning a blitz of internet memes poking fun at the idea of orcas coming together to attack humans calling them the robin hoods of the sea. in 2021, martin evans saw it firsthand.

the county just to our north. this is such a targeted place. parts of northeast pennsylvania and parts of the hudson valley getting inundated. we saw a 1 in 1,000 year flood event which means about .1% chance of this happening in a given year. it is rare. it is incredibly dangerous. we are so not done with this. we have high risk of flash flooding in vermont. that's an area that saw 200% to 300% of normal precipitation in the last two week. now 3 to 6 inches on top of what's already fallen. we'll see more of those types of pictures coming up in the next 24 hour. >> all right. thank you again, ginger. now to new detailed on a cracked roller coaster at a north carolina amusement park and what investigators found. mona is back with more. good morning again, mona. >> reporter: michael, good morning. you might remember it was a concerned patron that brought the crack in a support beam of the roller

coaster to the attention of park officials. took this shocking video showing the split open and close as the coaster flies around the turn at speeds of up to 95 miles an hour and the pillar appears to shift. gma learned the crack went all the way around just a terrifying detail. amusement park carawinds shut down the ride on june 30th. the park riding the split appears to have formed along a weld line in the steel column. carawinds taking steps to repair and reopen the ride. they will run independent tests. the north carolina department of labor will have the final say if that ride ever reopens. linsey. >> so fortunate no one was hurt. overseas, president biden is in europe for nato summit and meeting with king charles since he was crowned in may. elizabeth schulze is in london with the latest. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning. before departing for lithuania for that high stakes nato summit, president biden met face to face with king charles for

she's got experience. i'm so happy to see her advance to the quarter. jessica pegula, contrast in style. she's the solid one, the dependable one. she has the heavy ball, keeps it deep, very consistent. they both -- i mean, they both could win this title. it's open. i think it's still wide open. >> i love hearing that. >> yeah, yeah. >> with those two and chris eubanks. you won three wimbeldon titles here at the all england club. what advice would you give the three americans that are still in it? >> i would say manage your emotions, manage yourself this next week. this is really when the tournament starts, that second week. the first week you were tested, you got your practice in. second week is when the matches start to get tougher. i would just say play your match and then go back to your house or whatever and just relax. save up the emotional energy. i think that's more important. you have to win seven matches to

win wimbeldon. that's the thing. you have to always be on your a game for those seven matches. that's what the challenge is. because you cannot afford to have a bad day. >> not in this group. hard to imagine getting any more exciting or electric. it's been such fun being here. how has it been for you guys and your team? >> great. there's so many surprises at wimbeldon. just figured this out. you only -- we only get three weeks of practice on grass a year. the rest of the year is all about hard courts and clay courts and all these players really know how to play on those surfaces. but the grass, it's tricky, you know? it's not forgiving. it may be wet, may be damp. you don't move as well. it's just a foreign surface. it's tough to get acclimated. >> can we just say, as my mama used to say, it's great to lay my eyes on you. how are you doing? >> i'm doing well. doing well.
