police response to the unpermitted schipperke event. san francisco police chief is defending how his department responded. officers arrested more than 81 people, included 89 juveniles. participants accused the department of overacting but the by--but the chief accused the participants of riot. he also accused people of attacking his officers. >> what is excessive about any officer putting on take the equipment when they have explosive thrown at them, a bottle thrown at them, getting punched in the face? they did not have those helmets on before these things started to happen. kumasi: a few people were seen in video vandalizing community vehicles. participants held a protest complaining about the response.

parents agree this is an issue of life and death. reporter: it might be the middle of summer, but dozens of people packed the jim at ygnacio valley high school in concord to take part in a fentanyl awareness program for the school district. >> we have narcan on our campuses and we have had to administrate to save our students. reporter: linda is the assistant director of student services for the mount diablo school district. four of their students have died as a result of overdoses. she says the crisis is a cause of concern for educators and parents. >> you can see a lot of drugs. we don't see it. not even the administrators, there is not a word what is going on. reporter: crisis is widespread. since 2019, fentanyl-related deaths have more than tripled in california and increasingly more
