under water this morning. >> there is more rain on the way for the hard hit northeast. ginger is tracking the latest for us. we start with jaclyn lee in vermont. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you can see just how powerful the flooding was creating this massive sink hole. the flooding is so bad throughout parts of the state that two swift water rescue teams are currently stranded. this morning life threatening water swallowing roads and stranding thousands as much of new england remains under flash flood warnings. >> three people are stuck in a trailer. their road has been washed out. we are unable to access that area. >> reporter: in vermont, flooding engulfing entire towns and washing out roads. president biden approving an emergency declaration. dozens of businesses destroyed. some taking to paddle boards to assess all the damage. overnight we spoke to andrew mullen who watched as his

restaurant was inundated with water. >> there's about 7 feet of water inside to the point you can barely see the ice machine flipped over just from the power of the water coming through. >> reporter: the capital completely under water. this drive way in ludlow resembling a river bed. and this stream carrying a car and debris in its wake. >> we kept hearing the flooding was going to start. we just got in the car. >> reporter: the family evacuated before the water rose. her neighbor forced to kayak to her home to check on it. >> my next door neighbor. they're in the house and they can't get out. >> reporter: residents here, liken the water to hurricane irene. >> it was weeks and weeks and months that we were recovering. >> reporter: the state of new york also reeling. >> this is a disaster. >> reporter: after up to 10 inches drenched parts of the state, leaving one woman dead. and water rescues are still taking place in the northern part of the state with helicopter search and rescues

beginning this morning. michael? >> thank you so much for that. parts of new york are still reeling from devastating flooding as well. ginger's tracking the latest for us. ginger, there's more rain on the way? >> michael, we have such a short window to get all of this cleaned up. our drone will show you in rocklin county here, we've still got debris all up against this house from that brook that turned into a giant rapid filled river during the event. we've got more coming for the end of the week and even for the weekend. i'll get to that. but this morning vermont still has flash flood warnings in place. new hampshire, too. this thing slowly making its way out. it's been with us for 48 hours, even more in some places. upstate new york to maine, all in that flood watch. those go through this evening because rivers still have to recede. we will see that pull away just in time for new storms. tomorrow chicago, from noonish, down to st. louis. damaging wind threats, but really heavy rain. back to rapid city here today for the damaging wind threat.

but, george, not just late this week 2 to 4 inches, but this weekend, multitude of storms coming at us. more rain. >> ginger, thank you very much. we'll go over to president biden on the world stage at the nato summit in lithuania. he spoke just moments ago. >> this historic moment adding finland and sweden to nato is consequential. >> anthony blinken in a moment but first elizabeth schulze who is traveling with the president. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: good morning, george. this is a critical moment for the future of the nato alliance with this two day summit now officially under way. we heard president biden touting that land mark agreement for sweden to become the alliance's 32nd member. biden has been pushing turkey's president to drop his opposition but the white house will not say if the white house supplying fighter jets to turkey was part of that deal. biden is making the case here that nato is stronger than ever

in the face of russia's aggression as he tried to show case his leadership on the world stage during his re-election bid. but the alliance the under intense pressure as ukrainian president zelenskyy demands a guarantee that ukraine will be able to join nato. biden will meet with zelenskyy here tomorrow in their third face to face meeting just so far this year. biden has made clear ukraine will not join nato yet, as it would pull the u.s. into the world with russia. leaders tell me they will send a positive signal about ukraine's future membership. george? >> thanks, elizabeth. we're joined by the secretary of state anthony blinken. mr. secretary, thank you for joining us. let's begin with that green light to sweden's membership to nato. how important a break through is this? >> george, as a result, our alliance is stronger, bigger with the addition of sweden on top of finland. it's more united than it's ever been. among other things, that sends a strong message to putin that he's not going to outlast ukraine. he's not going to outlast nato. we're committed to supporting ukraine in this war of

aggression. we're committed to making sure that our alliance, our defensive alliance, is as strong as possible in case there's any further russian aggression. >> president zelenskyy of ukraine would like the united states to go even farther, pushing hard for nato membership. the president said over the weekend, president biden, that he doesn't believe ukraine is ready. when will they be ready? what kind of assurances can you give them coming out of this summit? >> george, you'll see a few things coming out of the summit. a very robust package of support both political and practical for ukraine. when it comes to membership, the summit will take note of the progress ukraine has made, which has been significant. at the same time, the fact that work remains to be done, in terms of reforming its military. reforming and strengthening its democracy. all of that will be coming out of the summit. you've got a unified alliance that is going to demonstrate in very practical ways its enduring support for ukraine, including the path to membership. >> is the real concern allowing ukraine into nato right now would put us even more directly

into conflict with russia? >> president biden has been clear about this. the ukrainians have, too. in the midst of a war, you won't take the membership step. beyond that, ukrainians acknowledge this as well. they still have work to do. it's going to be important to all the allies. the allies are united and many other countries are united in their support for ukraine, making sure they have what they need to deal with the russian aggression, to take back territory that's been seized and to continue down the path they've been on, which is integrating more and more with europe, with the west, with its institutions. >> what's your sense of how the ukrainian offensive is going? >> these are still early weeks. this is something that's going to play out over many more weeks and probably many more months. i think the ukrainians have in hand what they need to be successful. it's tough. the russians have built up strong defenses. at the end of the day, besides all of the support that we've

provided, it comes down to this. this is ukraine's land. it's their territory. it's their future. it's their freedom. that's the biggest difference maker. i'm convinced you'll see that play out over the next weeks. >> we saw news come out overnight that president putin actually met with the head of the wagner mercenary group. what did you make of that, that they met after the apparent mutiny? >> george, it's hard to speculate on what this means. what we have seen with prigozihn's efforts is a direct challenge to putin's authority. we've scene prigozhin saying nato an ukraine were never a threat to russia which is a fact. it's raised profound questions that putin still has to answer. i can't tell you how this is going to play out. i think we haven't seen the last chapter. what this means for prigozhin, wagner, president putin remains to be seen. but it does raise all sorts of questions. does suggest there's some cracks

in the armor. >> mr. secretary, thanks for your time this morning. >> thanks, george. >> michael? >> thank you, george. now to the major land slide in a california community that swallowed nearly a dozen homes. officials say the ground is still shifting and there's no way to stop it. chief national correspondent matt gutman is on the scene. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, michael. every minute we've been out here, we hear snapping and crackling of houses and glass. now, 12 houses have been red tagged. we have seen the houses have dropped several feet. the ground here has been so unstable that firefighters came in here giving residents just 20 minutes to grab everything they needed and get out. this morning a land slide in california that's already swallowed about a dozen homes threatens additional homes in this upscale los angeles neighborhood. the ground still moving. >> i think it has moved another 20 feet from last night. we are now seeing entire homes that have collapsed and are into

remains. it is moving quickly. >> reporter: the unmistakable sound of snapping and glass breaking as the ground continues to shift in rolling hills estates. officials adding there's no way to stop it and that additional residents might need to evacuate. buildings began creeking and sliding saturday. there was a garage that was levelled with the street here. now it's 16 feet down. there is a fissure that runs through the top of this neighborhood that has taken out home after home after home. now the lingering question here is how did this giant trench form in this neighborhood, and how big is it going to get? local council is declaring a state of emergency here. we're told one of the factors that geologists are going to be looking at are those atmospheric rivers that pummelled california

this past winter and caused all that runoff. linsey? >> so much devastation. matt, thanks to you. now to the urgent man hunt for the murder suspect and self-taught survivalist who escaped from jail and is evading police. alex is on the ground with the latest. >> reporter: good morning, linsey. more than 150 law enforcement officers now involved in this man hunt for michael berham. meanwhile, another investigation is under way as to how he escaped this jail overnight the search intensified. at least 15 law enforcement agencies scouring pennsylvania and upstate new york by land and air trying to capture the self-taught survivalist. he one served as a sergeant in the army reserve. >> we believe he is prepared to conceal himself in the woods. >> reporter: authorities finding stock piles and camp sites in the wooded areas and not ruling out that he may have had help. he escaped from warren county jail thursday night, rapelling his way to freedom using bed sheets as rope.

is there indication that he was getting assistance from inside the prison or this was an inside job? >> i can tell you that that is being thoroughly investigated. >> reporter: mary kinaro lives next to the jail. berham was seen running through her yard the night he escaped. >> i am being very conscious about what we are being asked to do. that's to lock everything up. >> reporter: berham, one of two prison escapes in the region. in indianapolis, an inmate in custody after allegedly assaulting a deputy as they returned from a medical appointment. authorities say that he stole a van, crashed into a utilpo deputy durham passed from his injuries. police in that case believe inmate's actions were intentional acts of homicide and will be treated as such. george? >> okay, alex. thanks. amazon prime day is kicking off right now. adobe analytics predicts $13 billion will be sent. that's up almost 10% from last year. consumer correspondent becky worley joins with us some of the

fight they've had to free their son. >> we see their son. that's evan gershkovich. they met here in the united states, raised evan and his sister here in the united states and right now evan, as you said, has been spent more than 100 days behind bars in russia. there's no evidence the charges that russia said she's a spy. his parents do remain hopeful that they're going to get him home. how are you? >> holding up. that's the best that we can describe. >> how about evan? what are you hearing from him these days? >> well, evan is writing letters. we have on going conversations. he tries to take care of himself. he meditates. he watches his diet. he exercises. he has one hour of walk outside. >> that's his exercise? >> yes. >> i know in his letters home, he's maintained his sense of humor. >> yes. >> even teasing you about the

[ laughter ] tell me about that. he said breakfast reminds me of breakfast at home. that didn't upset you? >> no. i thought it was funny. i insisted on oatmeal. i thought it was very healthy and now it's a laughing matter. >> his parents, who fled the former soviet union in 1979, have traveled back to moscow twice since evan's arrest. at a hearing in june, were allowed to speak with him. we all saw that video of you speaking to him. what was he saying? >> joking, immediately. he asked about my story. i share a lot of stuff like that, to make him laugh. >> when i see stories about him joking, it makes me think that's a gift to both of you. >> oh, thank you. >> definitely. when we saw him, he wasn't in such strong spirits and joking and looking good, we wouldn't be able to stay as strong as we are.

i know that he put a lot of effort in supporting us. we have to do the same. >> nothing that might be taken as a sign of dissent is allowed in russia. >> he was detained in march, being held on charges of espionage. charges the u.s. and journal both firmly deny. evan has plead not guilty. >> he considers it a privilege and responsibility that was accredited and a foreign journalist, not russian. he would want to report honestly. a lot of people working there cannot say that. >> you're limited in what you can talk about. but when you spoke with president biden, are you confident that the united states is doing everything it can, the government? >> that's the only thing that we can rely on and be hopeful. president biden spoke to us and gave us a promise to do whatever it takes.

he talked to us as a parent and he told us he understands our pain. we also met secretary of state mr. blinken as well. he showed us his cards with the names of all wrongfully detained americans around the world. evan's name was on that list as well. he promised to us he's not gonna rest until all the names are crossed out from his card. >> last week confirmation of talks about a possible prisoner exchange. we saw the news last week that the russians came out and said the negotiations have started and the united states response was, we don't want to raise false hopes. that must have been a very difficult couple of days for you. >> it was. we understand that they needed to do it in private. shouldn't be public. we don't know much about it.

but we still, very very optimistic that it's going in the right direction. >> president biden did say that it's a personal matter for him because of his son. and we take a lot of comfort. >> that has got to make a lot of difference to hear the president of the united states say that. and you believed him? >> absolutely. >> is there any message you have for the russian authorities? >> journalism is not a crime. >> we want our son back. >> yes. >> i look at this picture and i see the headline of the 100 days. but what i see even more than that is a young man who is so open and curious to the world. what do you see? >> exactly what you just said, you know? sometimes it's hard to see his face everywhere.

sometimes it's heartwarming that he's not forgotten, that people talk about him, that people care. that's nice to know. >> what's the first thing you're going to do when he comes home? >> i don't even know. i just wouldn't let him out. financially you're a bit more secure. you're guaranteeing yourself main draws in grand slams. i couldn't get that. i went up and down. my ranking fluctuated from 150 to 230. just struggling to put together consistent matches. there was a lot of frustration that built up. few weeks before that in miami i got up to around 102. right there. i'm one match away couple times i went out, didn't play well. had that thought on my mind a lot, wanting to be inside the top 100. lost my ranking points. went into miami ranked around 120. kind of just -- not gave up, but said top 100 going to have to wait. not gonna come in one match now. we'll see when it happens. sure enough to be able to put together that run in miami i had to get inside to get top 100, it was just like a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. i think that's where you saw the out pouring of emotion for me. i still to this day haven't been that emotional on the tennis court. i get emotional just watching it again. >> it does. to be here at wimbeldon, first time you have played here at wimbeldon ever.

[ laughter ] there's an adjustment that comes. you know, robin, from play. playing on hard court is different, playing on clay is different than grass. grass, the movement on it for me is the really challenging thing. i'm pretty tall. the ball stays low. >> 6' 7", you're pretty tall? >> the ball stays pretty low. you have to take multiple steps in order to stop, change direction, accelerate, deaccelerate. it feels a bit uncomfortable the first week. after my first weekend, i sent a text to a good friend of mine, kim clisters. four time grand slam champion. i wanted to complain. i said grass is the dumbest surface to play tennis on. the bounces aren't even. it's not as fast as people said it was. why am i doing this? fast forward about five weeks, i have a title on grass, i'm sitting here in the quarter finals of wimbeldon. i think back and go, man, me and grass, we got acquainted really fast.

>> yeah, you did. you are the son of a preacher man. how has your faith -- i won sing any more. sorry about that. how has your faith helped you during those challenging times you were just talking about? >> the big thing about having faith is just trusting that things are going to work out the way they are supposed to when they are supposed to. early in my career, very impatient. i was 150. i thought i should have been top 100 the next week. things just don't happen that way. after dealing with the ups and downs and getting frustrated, getting a bit dejected at times, i just had to take a step back and say, do you know what? if i'm meant to be in the top 100, it will happen when it's supposed to happen. if i'm supposed to be a top 50 player, lit happen when it happens. i can't focus all of my emphasis on that. i can just focus on the process and having faith that if i do the things to get there, it will happen. that will be the biggest contributing factor. just trusting it will happen when it's supposed to. not really under my control.

>> i always loved the individual aspect of it. i'm a pretty independent person myself. being able to go out there and do everything on my own was super empowering. i always found myself missing and coming back. it's been a really cool journey. >> it's a journey that almost ended in june of last year when pegula received a phone call in the middle of the night that her mother kim experienced a near fatal cardiac arrest and subsequent brain injury. pegula opening up her mother's health battle in this emotional personal essay called "i want to talk to you about my mom." we live in the same neighborhood. my sister called me freaking out. she didn't know what was happening. i ran over, was there in ten minutes. dealt with the whole ordeal then. we went to the hospital together. she was super strong to get through those few weeks and get back home. >> dubbed the queen of buffalo, kim pegula is the president and

owner of both the buffalo bills and sabres along with her husband terry. buffalo fans holding prayer vigils in her honor. what do you want folks to know about your mom? >> she was kind of fearless and breaking boundary. in sports being a major woman in sports, especially football, hockey. not really a lot of asian women in sports. she was always a super independent strong willed woman. >> for months the pegula family kept kim's health issues private, but it was this moment when buffalo bills player demar hamlin went into cardiac arrest midgame that prompted pegula to talk about her mom and even wear hamlin's number 3 patch at the australian open. >> it was like, i felt like i had to get it off my chest. i knew i wanted to say something eventually. when i wrote it and got it all out, i felt better. it took the burden off my dad having to talk about it. >> pegula said her mom is improving every day and she is thankful that her daughter
