looking into this ever since. county officials gave an update a short while ago. they said this release lasted about a minute at about 8:30 this morning. they have cruise out monitoring the area. at this point, they don't know how much was released or how far it's spread. they say they have asked the refinery for a 72-hour report. once they have that information, they are hoping they will be able to make a better determination. >> at approximately 8:30 a.m. this morning, the martinez refining co. had a release of about one-minute duration of coke dust. >> the company says they team out collecting samples. >> coke is a material mostly made up of carbon and hydrogen. there can also, because of the

refining process, be trace metals and other chemicals that's the reason why we are doing a laboratory analysis. >> the martinez refinery processes gasoline into crude oil. coke dust is a byproduct of the process. in large amounts, it can be toxic, but how much was released is still unknown. >> until we have that information and until we have our laboratory analysis, i cannot speak further to potential impacts or quantify the release going forward. >> at this point, health officials believe health risk may be limited. kind of watching with water we do not expect to cause any further aggravation.

>> there was a release on thanksgiving day last year in a different part of the refinery. as much as 24 tons of ash rained down on cars and homes. the fbi and environmental protection agency are investigating. the congressman who represents this part of contra costa county says this repeat pattern is a big concern. >> this particular refinery is establishing a very, very bad record. within one year, nine months, there have been two major releases from the refinery, which tells me they have an operational problem, they have a safety problem they absolutely have to address. >> the refinery did put out a statement to warn residents about what happened and how to report problems. comes after 24 tons of catalyst

dust from martinez refining blanketed the community thanksgiving evening last year. the company immediately claimed the dust did not pose a health risk, but as the i-team first reported, they release prompted investigations by the fbi and epa as well as a criminal investigation by the contra costa county das office. the county also issued an advisory against eating backyard produced. that was lifted last month. julian: out to the triple digit temperatures that will be coming to parts of the bay area this week -- now to the triple-digit temperatures. sandhya: it's going to be sizzling this weekend. let's look at life actors right now from our mount tam camera where you see the fog to where the sun is shining. two very different views reflected in our temperatures. they are running higher inland along the coast and places like half moon bay, not much change.

that's because that fog layer is keeping you at the 7° right now, but 30° -- 40°, excuse me, warmer in fairfield where it is 97. it is definitely hot inland, not so much near the coast. excessive heat watch begins friday morning and it is in effect for all inland areas through sunday night. for solano county until monday night, the concern is this will be extreme heat that will cause temperatures to soar into the near 110. overnight, not much the risk of heat illness is such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion. here's a sampling of what you can expect. saturday is the hardest day, mid-100s, even some 110's up around ukiah. sunday, it is still hot in the bay area. i will be back to let you know how long this heat will persist in a few minutes.

kristen: thanks so much. the east bay, you can see, will be hit especially hard. julian: leslie brinkley live where there's temperatures will be soaring higher than 100° in some places. leslie: the heat is already exceeding expectations. this afternoon, my car was showing in the mid 90's. here in lafayette, the wind is kicking up, so not quite so bad, but the heat is coming, and the whole point the state of california is making is prepare for it. we are in advance worrying about rainstorms and smoke and fires. it is time to get ready for heat. tomorrow, h hardest by the weekend. >> california's hotter and drier future is here right now. leslie: the governor's office launched a new campaign aimed at getting vulnerable populations to cool places in heat waves.

san francisco is looking for 30 to entrepreneurs to equip and give money to. >> there will be a panel of entrepreneurs, representatives from different city departments, and potential investors. they will be scored and have an opportunity to receive a grant. luz: tank," but with the neighborhood in mind. the page program will be dedicated to helping entrepreneurs as well as any business owners who need help and are currently in the field more. the first of its kind program will give out $4500 towards a new or current prison is, a total of $144,000 from the city. one of the main requirements is to be part of the city's small business training program. in other words, go through training that teaches you how to run a business.

temperatures in check along the coast. oakland, 70, 70 five in mountain view. the low 80's for palo alto, san jose. half moon bay, you are chilling at 57°. bright, sunny skies as we look at inland areas. 86, santa rosa and 95 in livermore. as that heat builds this weekend, i want to remind you of these safety tips. stay hydrated with plenty of fluids, never leave people and pets in cars, reduce the time you spend outside, try to stay in the shade if you can, and no signs of -- no -- know heat illnesses. heat is the number one killer in this country and that is something you need to take seriously when we have a stretch of very hot days. tomorrow, this warming trend that has been underway is going to take a backseat for a little bit. water vapor imagery passes to our north.

it will cause a little dip in temperatures, but we will not notice it that much inland. you will notice the fog sitting near the coast line. here is what will happen as we hit the weekend. high-pressure, that ridge really builds, brings dangerous and extreme heat this weekend, which we all will need to take precautions for. here's that little layer of. fog and spotty drizzle tomorrow morning, a wide range of temperatures in the afternoon, and we are expecting intense heat with possible records, particularly saturday. the fog spills over into the bay . we start out with spotty drizzle and the fog will peel back to the coast, bayside and inland, you get the sun. your morning temperatures in the 50's and 60's, once again, watch out for that dog. afternoon highs in the south bay, it's going to be warm. on the peninsula, 80 city, 59 at half moon bay. san francisco, 65 degrees. mix of sun and clouds in daly city and breezy, 59.

where do you procure the equipment from? how is it funded? >> we have a couple of partnerships. an organization good sports has all this un-sold equipment from nike, under armour, adidas, and this is all brand-new equipment that just has not been sold. for us, that is our main supplier. also, we have gear drives schools to collect people's old sports equipment that they are not using and is still in great condition, so it is perfect for our lockers. for funding, we started with a gofundme that hit around $10,000. now we are just working off grants. kristen: wow. julian: that is so incredible. clearly, you have found a need in the community and you are meeting at not just in your community but all across the country, which is so incredible. we know tomorrow is going to be a huge night for you. what are you expecting?

what are you looking forward to? >> am looking forward to meeting all the athletes. i'm a huge sports fan, so i grown up watching all these athletes, me and my brother. seeing patrick mahomes is going to be there, some of these other crazy athletes are going to be there and i'm going to have a chance to meet them, that is definitely what i'm most excited for. julian: maybe atherton one steph curry, i don't know. kristen: why do you think sports equity is so important? have you seen what difference it makes when people have or don't have access to equipment and new equipment and things in which they can increase physical fitness and engagement? >> you mentioned physical fitness, and that is obviously a huge part of it, but also the mental. what does sports do for you mentally? in my own experience, sports is what gave me confidence and kind of made me break the shy shell of what i used to be.
