spencer christian for a look at the forecast. we have been warm for quite some time and here it comes. >> you're right about that. let me show you why were having excessive heat moving in our direction. an area of high pressure has been building over the desert and southwest, it is expanding into california into the bay area and bringing the heat to us. an excessive heat wash -- watch will be in effect for the bay area except the immediate shoreline and the coast from 11 a.m. friday to 9 p.m. sunday. during this time afternoon highs will range from 90's to 110 degrees. low temperatures will range from 60's in the valleys to 70's and the hills, pretty extreme. this extreme heat can increase the risk of heat-related illness. parking your car, we know we should stay hydrated, remember to try to park if possible not in an unshaded area but in a shaded area.

solar radiation from the heat that penetrates the glass in the car can raise the outside temperature to 120 degrees inside your car. that's within about 10 minutes. in 20, it can raise the inside the car temperature to 130 degrees so if possible one parking, try to find shade in leave no one, people nor pets, unattended in this heat. i'll have more on the heat wave coming up later. >> now to the east bay which is going to see triple digits. >> we have abc seven news reporter live in walnut creek. how is it going out there? >> good afternoon. it is kind of nice, mid-80's. the pool was busy, parking lot was packed. a popular place but health officials point out we have had a relatively mild summer. it a lot of us have not been activated to the extreme heat. that can pose problems for people and it means fire crews will be busy.

>> let's go, let's go. >> these fire recruits spent the day training at a new facility in hayward. >> in the academy we give lessons and then a test. we are giving them a test that is teaching them a lesson. >> today may be practice but the threat of a real fire is way up as we head into the weekend. the national weather service has issued an excessive heat watch from friday to sunday. >> a lot of potential this time of year. relative humidity will drop down and pose a challenge. we are ready for the challenges. we want to make sure we stay ahead of the fires. >> temperatures in the east bay are forecast to soar to hitting 110 in places like livermore. impact can range from wildfires to problems with the power grid. >> extreme heat is a killer more than any disaster we face. we see more fatalities from heat. earthquakes and fires are more dramatic. flooding is a killer but not nearly to the extent that heat

impacts our state every year. >> state agencies are coordinating with local agencies throughout california to prepare for the extreme heat. the national weather service predicts record-setting temperatures. >> we are expecting significant heat that will build across our state into the weekend and next week with some locations experiencing their hottest temperatures this summer. record hot temperatures are likely in some spots across the state. very hot and dangerous temperatures in the triple digits. >> california's natural resources secretary wade says heat waves are becoming dangerous and extreme. the extreme heat along with wildfires, flooding, sea level rising and coastal erosion is one of five climate issues having an unprecedented impact on the state. >> extreme heat may be the most destructive, the most dangerous toward public health and mortality of any climate driven impact.

but it is like literally invisible compared to a wildfire or a drought. >> contra costa county fire officials tell me the vegetation on the hills is five feet taller compared to last year because of the wet weather. more dry brush and stuff to deal with. >> a tough story, a three-year-old boy being treated for injuries after falling from a second-story window at his home in brentwood. paramedics rushed that boy to a helicopter after he fell into a patio afternoon. video from behind the home on bear creek drive shows the window screen pushed outward. firefighters say children falling from windows becomes more common as temperatures go up. >> another blow to an iconic san francisco business. >> anchor brewing which opened

the first craft beer that started the whole microbreweries. >> when i first moved to san francisco it was one of those things where anchor steam was made in san francisco. i had never heard of it before. and then it became a favorite. >> on connecticut street we found david nelson drinking ale. he is heartbroken to see anchor brewing company go. >> i hate to see some other company come in and buy a company like you know so iconic as anchor steam. and then close it down. >> anchor brewing spokesman say whether company is ceasing operations and liquidating the business. >> the pandemic really was the stake in the heart of anchor brewing company. most of its sales were in bars and restaurants. when those were closed during

covid-19, sales collapsed. >> anchor gave its employees two months notice and a severance package. >> right now these are tough economic times that we are struggling through and anchor's demise is symbolic. >> they have stopped brewing and will continue packaging and distributing beer while available or through the end of july. >> i just wish someone would save it now. maybe someone from sales course. bring it back. >> i can tell you may be a handful of people or a dozen people stopped by hoping to pick something up but anchor brewing to is closed today and it will reopen temporarily until its inventory is gone. live in san francisco, suzanne, abc 7 news. >> this is a tough question but was there anything that could have been done to prevent this ceasing of operations and liquidation? >> the spokesman tells us

basically the company ran out of time. during the pandemic a lot of restaurants closed and anchor brewing sales depended on restaurants and bars. it tried to pivot by putting itself in grocery stores. had been called off and we hear that basically that was just the beginning of the end. that is the latest live in san francisco, we will send it back to you. >> sounds like the pandemic contributed, thank you. >> anchor got its start in 1896. anchor steam beer got its start because of the steam process that uses to make the beer. its fortunes changed in 1965 when fritz maytag of the ma family bought the company. he is credited with ushering in a boom of craft beer in the

u.s.. fast-forward to 2017, anchor was purchased for $85 million and according to reports it did not go well with employees alleging mismanagement and a of understanding of craft beer. >> ucsf it announced their proposal with dignity health to acquire st. mary's, saint francis memorial hospital and the outpatient and urgent care clinics associated with those hospitals. ucsf is meeting with the university of california board of regents next week to formally request approval. in a statement they say saint mary's and saint francis would become ucsf health facilities and would no longer have religious affiliation. >> san francisco leaders are moving forward with an effort to reform the city's business tax system. mayor breed and supervisors asked the city treasurer and controller to begin the process of getting input on specific reform recommendations from the business community and others. breed says efforts to strengthen the economy require changes in

the way taxes are structured. san francisco faced a this year. it will frame the development of a november 2024 ballot measure. >> now to the effort to keep the a's in oakland. the mayor met with mlb commissioner rob manfred over the weekend in seattle. >> is not over until it's over. news sports anchor casey pratt was there. got the inside scoop from the mayor. >> i checked in with the mayor today in what you have to understand was why the secret trip to seattle was significant. you have to dig into the recent history after the mayor was elected. rob manfred said he was going to call her and he did not. they asked the mayor not to speak to the commissioner so there is a major disconnect. with a vote potentially looming, the mayor had had enough. on sunday she boarded a plane where major league baseball was holding their annual all-star

festivities. she brought receipts. the mayor and her staff briefed the commissioner and deputy commissioner and by all accounts from people in the room meeting went well. >> it was important for me to be someone took a consequential vote, that the commissioner and every owner have all the facts. and so when we went to seattle, i brought 31 copies of all of our plans and everything so that there was no miscommunication. no misconception of what was actually proposed and not proposed. >> what happens next? relocation committees or decisions like that. what are your next steps, what can you do, if anything? >> i hold those cards close to my heart but i'm going to continue to fight and i want to talk to the oakland a's fans for a minute if you do not mind. i am so proud of all the fans, oaklanders. and beyond. to keep it going, to keep going. we are fighting this fight together.

♪ >> before prohi brewery in san francisco was making steam beer, they were all making beer the same way because they did not have ice. after prohibition refrigeration was available. breweries went back to making longer beer the way it had always been made. very cold temperatures. for some reason, this company, anchor, decided that we are going to keep doing it the old-fashioned way. fritz maytag recognized the historical significance of the beer, the small company that had preserved the process. that is what he fell in love with and he bought the company. from there he went on a mission to improve the quality of the beer. he ended up bringing it to the whole world. this is my home, i've been here for almost 38 years, it means a lot to me. my history started here in a summer job in 1984 and i took a part-time job on the packaging line and i hold the position of brewmaster. i've had quite an extensive history. >> i was a young college student

starting to enjoy beer for the first time and then the next thing i know a job opening popped up and being the homebrewer that i was at the time in getting more interested in beer i said i'd better give this a shot. it week after that i was on the line. >> my job is to preserve our core beers, classic beers as true to style as they always have been. they are history in a bottle, it is one of the biggest challenges in brewing. consistency. cross changeover years, changes. it's the biggest challenge that we face. to say this year is better than last year, it can tell you that. we have to make the beer the same year-over-year. being at a company that was a leader in this space starting off with the craft brew trend, it was just really fun and interesting. greatest reward is coming up with new beer that i think is fantastic and high quality beer. it gets into the consumers hands

p.m. sunday. for all the bay area except the immediate coastline and the shoreline, degrees on the back of extreme heat significantly increasing the risk of heat related illnesses. let's take a look at conditions. apache low clouds and fog. overnight lows in the mid to upper 50's, highs will range from low 60's to the coach to mid and upper 70's around the bay and that will be the last day of normal weather. friday through sunday on the accuweather 7-day forecast highs above 100 degrees. upper 80's around the bay during this time. that he will use on monday. it will be in the upper 90's inland but you will see the heat getting to back off in other locations and by tuesday and wednesday much more comfortable weather. >> that relief is insight, thank you. nasa released a stunning new image from the james webb space

telescope to celebrate its first anniversary. check this out. this shows a stellar nursery which is where new stars form, scientists say the nursery is the nearest one to the earth and is about 400 light-years away. the web telescope was able to capture the image because it is the most powerful one ever sent into space. >> james webb we expected and it is stunning new looks at the universe, so i continue to be amazed. >> nasa says the next adventure for the telescope will be looking at some exoplanets that orbit stars outside of our solar system. they are hoping to learn details about atmospheres and what they are made of like lava, water or rocks. >> it is the story of us in our world. it's not just about the espy's, it's a big day for television. >>mmy nominations are out. find out

this years cellar elevating its 30th anniversary. we expect a great show on abc. the u.s. women's national team will be awarded the arthur ashe award for courage for their fight for equal pay. in may of 2022, unions o women's and men's teams approved a new collective bargaining agreement that the u.s. soccer federation would afford the women's team equal pay for international competition including world cup bonuses. i spoke to former u.s. soccer star julie about the honor and also asked purdue basketball star zach who is up for best marital -- male college athlete. why he chose to stay instead of declaring for the nba draft. >> i mean, for so long we have been fighting for back in my day, it was equitable pay. this team, equal pay. for them to get over the line which was not going to be easy.

california. here is a look at the forecast. up to a hundred inland on friday, 10 four record highs are possible on saturday down to one 02 on sunday and inland areas because that heat is going to hold on through the entire weekend. we'll see the heat easing on monday and then tuesday and wednesday of next week cooling relief but it will challenging three day dealing with the heat. limit exposure and don't park your car in the sun. common sense is right. >> san francisco's presidio tunnel topsail at a new picnic and gathering area. the announcement comes on the first anniversary of the parks location. the area will include picnic tables and banquettes that seat nearly 240 people. construction begins in august. >> a plan to spend more money to improve mental health resources in the state.

dorsey has a look at the new investment. >> california leaders say the state needs to do more for the mental health of residents. they met with residents in a mental health summit to propose a transportation to the health care system. >> i been alive through the devolution of sorts. and so our opportunity presents itself. >> the proposal centers around two bills to reform and build the modernization of the mental health services act from 2004 and a 4.68 billion dollar bond. if past the package will create solutions for people suffering from serious mental illness and substance abuse disorders and provide housing or behavioral health treatment and community-based settings totaling to 10,000 beds statewide. >> we got to have housing slots, more placement slots, cottage style settings. campus style settings.

up her daughter as she was attacked in broad daylight at the corner of sanchez and clipper street in san francisco's know we valley neighborhood on june 26. the mom who we kept anonymous said she checked her iphone before crossing the street. >> in that moment somebody attacked me from behind, grabbed my phone. i instinctually grabbed it back. do not recommend that. he was wearing a ski mask and a hoodie and he showed me to the ground forcefully along with my stroller. >> surveillance footage shows the juvenile suspect sprint into a stolen key and drove away as the mom screamed out for help. >> somebody called the police. >> after filing a police report the mom struggle to get any response from investigators. >> i tried so hard to activate the police around my attack. i felt like i was dismissed as a phone robbery but this was a

violent targeted attack on women. >> the next day she went to the police station determined to get help put on her way there she passed another victim of the same crime getting treated by an ambulance. another mom in route to pick up her children from school attacked and robbed of her iphone on the same street just before 3:00 p.m.. >> i had gotten a call so i picked up. it was the one day i did not have my earbuds, they were charging at home. so i just picked up the call. >> that's when the assailant struck again. surveillance video from a tesla parked across the street shows the suspect punched her in the face. >> i felt violated in many different ways. the first thing i think about is your kids because you're like who is going to watch after them? you are just broken. >> it turns out these women are not alone. another victim wrote to report to teenagers quote beat me over the head from behind with a bat while the other stole my iphone. police say these attacks are

part of a string of at least 11 robberies that have been across the city within two days. june 26 and 27th. many attacks happening within 20 minutes of one another, all connected to a single group of teenagers. >> we've began piecing it together in realizing these are part of a series. we've made one arrest, recovered stolen vehicles but we have a lot of work to do. >> the crime spree did not end there. victims tell the eye team the next day another robbery spree targeted women in parts of soma, the tenderloin, union square in the valley. >> we have suspects. we are confident we will make arrests. >> records in allies by media partners at the san francisco standard found 22 reported cell phone robberies from june 23 to that when he fourth grade 15 targeted women. seven of those cases reportedly involved juveniles. in those cases many of the women tracked their assailants after the attacks using the find my iphone feature. >> it travels so i saw mine go

to market street, i saw it end up in oakland. >> three of the moms told the eye they tracked their iphones to a fleamarket at the oakland coliseum swap meet. >> you have 10 or 11 women who all have the gps location of attackers that are attacking one woman after another about 20 minutes apart over two days. there must be an avenue for using the data to capture them before they hit someone with a bat or punch someone in the face. i have experienced that that data is not used at all. >> one of the moms emailed the pd investigator assigned to her case screenshots showing the moving location of her iphone. >> is moving around, there is activity. the police officer wrote back to me that means it is no longer our problem. you need to reach out to the oakland police officers to address this. >> she did that but kept getting a busy signal. >> this just seems like an absolute shame. >> one juvenile was arrested in
