the future of artificial intelligence to replace actors and writers. this morning hollywood is poised to strike. overnight the contract deadline expiring without agreement after more than four weeks of intense negotiations between sag and the alliance of motion picture and television producers. >> in this streaming era, everything is different. nothing is the same from where it was in the broadcast tv era where there was a model for residuals and a model for pay. now all of that's changing, and the actors and the union are essentially saying, pay us more and give us our residuals. a big component of these negotiations and what they are fighting for is also protections from ai. >> reporter: in a statement, sag actors said they voted unanimously to recommend to the national board a strike. the president, actress fran drescher said the union

7:11 am
they are now pledging long term security guarantees. after ukraine's president zelenskyy sharply criticized nato countries, yesterday he struck a much more positive, grateful tone. in an hour long meeting with president biden, both leaders calling the meeting a success. at the end of the day, there is still no timeline for when ukraine could join the nato alliance, even after the war ends. george? >> okay, elizabeth, thanks. let's bring in john kirby. thank for joining us again. those words from president biden, as long as it takes in ukraine. he seems to be bracing the country and the world for a long war. >> it could be, george. we just don't know. ukrainians are conducting a counter offensive right now, from the dambas area to the south. they're making progress. not as fast as far as they'd like to go, but we're going to do everything we can to give them the capabilities and tools to succeed. it could be week, months of hard fighting as they try to claim back the rest of their country. >> have the russians recovered

from that apparent mutiny a few weeks back? >> it remains to be seen. we don't know exactly what transpired every minute of that event. we don't really know what kind of impact it's going to have on the war in ukraine. i would tell you right now, george, as we speak, there hasn't been that much of an effect on the fighting in ukraine. russians are dug in. ukrainians are trying to claw back territory. we're still trying to help them win. >> on this hack revealed by microsoft. we know they targeted the u.s. government, the commerce department, the state department. i spoke with jake sullivan about it yesterday. said you were still investigating. what more have you learned? how serious is it? what are you going to say to the chinese? >> well, we took it very, very seriously. we took actions immediately after to try to mitigate the effects of it. we're obviously taking a fresh look at our systems and our cloud computing capabilities to make sure we can be more resilient in the future. it is still under investigation by the fbi.
7:13 am
i'm afraid i don't have any more information now for you today, but again, we're working real hard to make sure our systems are as resilient as possible. >> what does it say to you just as secretary of state blinken was heading to beijing? >> you mean secretary yellen, i think. i don't want to get into the attribute on this thing and get ahead of the fbi on this investigation. i would say a couple of things. our networks are attacked every single day by state and nonstate actors all around the world. it is not uncommon for some of though state actors, russia, iran, north korea, china, to be part of that process. but again, i don't want to get ahead of where we are. i don't know that it's helpful to try to read too much into the timing of this attack with secretary yellen's trip. secretary yellen had a good productive set of conversations with the chinese. lines of communication are staying open. that's a good thing. the president wants to focus on getting this relationship in a more stable platform. >> i thought the hack started much earlier and was only revealed around secretary
7:14 am
yellen's trip, but thanks for clarifying that. robin? >> the other headline, there are some signs inflation is cooling off. now at its lowest level in more than two years. our chief economics correspondent rebecca jarvis is on wall street with what it means for your wallet. good morning, rebecca. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. this is a good thing for the most part for people's wallets. as you say, inflation is now at its lowest level in more than two years with prices up 3% from a year ago. you compare that to this time last year, june of 2022 when prices were up more than 9%. it is a big relief. one of the biggest movers where prices have been dropping is in air fares. air fares down more than 8% month over month. almost 19% from a year ago. we found certain flights now that are less than $100 on domestic fares. this isn't a model. it doesn't mean every single air fare is 8% less.
7:15 am
some are higher still. but a lot of them are trending lower. another area that's trending lower are gasoline prices. those prices down about 26.5% from a year ago. if you're in the market for a used car or truck, you're in good luck because those prices have also come down about 5%. now, there are still areas that are climbing. one of them, and this is an impact on people. shelter costs, though prices are still up almost 8%. especially if you're a renter, you're feeling this. good news is overall, we're seeing those numbers come down. the typical family is spending about $200 more every month than they were on the same goods and services as a year ago and the fed may be slowing down on those interest rate hikes which cost you more when you borrow money. michael? >> good news for the american family. thank you very much, rebecca. now to the latest on the deadly hit and run in washington, d.c. near the national mall. faith abubey is live in washington with the latest on what happened. good morning, faith. >> reporter: good morning, michael.
7:16 am
that deadly hit and run incident happened right near the white house and a busy tourist area. multiple law enforcement agencies are on high alert looking for that suspect. authorities say this incident happened around 1:30 p.m. yesterday afternoon. secret service agents were trying to pull over a driver for an expired car registration. apparently, the unidentified driver made them think that he or she was about to stop but then suddenly sped off. the suspect ran a red light and plowed into some pedestrians. one of them a 75-year-old man, who was taken to the hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead. we're told a 13-year-old was also injured in that crash but will be okay. this is still very much an urgent investigation. police say there's no active threat to the community right now. police are still looking for that suspect and a blue 2006 honda accord with virginia license plates. anyone with information is being asked to call the u.s. park police. robin? >> hopefully, they will, faith. thank you. now to the news overnight about dick vitale.
