87 before the interstate 280 connector. two southbound lanes remain closed while california highway patrol conducts an investigation. traffic is being redirected to 280 north. an eight-year-old boy is in "grave" cdion after being caught in the crossfire of a battle in oakland. the shti happened on eastbound 580 near ha street at 6:30 p.m. a freeway closure because traffic to come to a stop last night.authorities said the shoog first involved two cars, a dark sedan and a marine suv. chp tells abc 7 news the eight-year-old boy was riding in a car that was not involved in the shooting. he is the third child to be hit by a stray bullet in oakland in the last four days. >> the child was driven to the hospital and was later transported to the children's hospital in oakland. gloria: in a statement released

on friday night, oakland mayor sheng thao says senseless gun violence has impacted far too many lives and when an innocent child is harmed it is unfathomable i am staying abreast of the situation and joining all oaklanders in hoping for the young victim's full recovery. chp said it is still investigating. no arrests have been made. officers believe the two suspects and the vehicles may have exited the freeway at park boulevard. that is a major road in oakland. there was also a freeway shooting in san francisco. a woman was shot in the leg yestery afternoon. she was traveling southbound on interstate 280 near albania boulevard around 1:00 p.m. investigators say three shots were fired toward her suv. sky 7 was above the scene. the woman was able to pull over

on the shoulder of the freeway. first responders took her to the hospital for a gunshot wound to the lower leg. this morning we are getting ready for a hot weekend. the north bay, people are trying to stay cool as some areas in the bay area are expected to hit triple digit temperatures, just like frances said. an outreach worker spent some time checking to see if the homeless are ready for the heat. he brought refreshments to help people throughout the day. >> people overheat and do not realize it. they think it just have a headache. sometimes it can be a possible stroke. >> it is brutal to be out here. a gatorade and a little bit of hope that things will get better. gloria: volunteers are also staying busy. there was plenty of water on hand as first responders from across sonoma county took part in an all day training drill. lifeguards said they are

expecting families to go out to the city pools and the beaches. despite the extreme conditions, pg&e has no plans for public safety power shut offs this weekend. those typically happen when there is severe weather like extreme heat or wind that can increase the risk of a wildfire. it allows the utility to turn off power lines so they do not ignite fires if they get damaged. in the east bay, residents kicked off the weekend with a cold pint at the 12th annual blues and brews festival. warm weather did not stop some from having fun in the sun. >> people are braving the heat and looking to cool off. this will be the first weekend where you will not have to wear a parka. it is nice to have a true summer evening experience. gloria: today is the main event of the blues and brews festival. there are a variety of food

otter and everyone said that is 841. >> the surfboard biting see honor in santa cruz has once again evaded capture. >> i am frustrated and exhausted. >> colleen young is one of the divers on the capture team from the california department of fish and wildlife. they have been working with monterey bay aquarium staff. officials are responding because this five-year-old female otter is showing concerning and unusual behavior by approaching people. >> we do not have this issue that frequently to know exactly how to capture an animal with this set of behaviors. we are trying to be as adaptable and creative as we can. >> this mischievous otter has quite the history. a spokesperson said the otter's mom was rescued in santa cruz. the mom had reports of approaching people on kayaks and

boats but nothing to the extent that her daughter, otherwise known as otter 841, her rescue number. >> she is focused on the fins. we do not want to have a person accidentally bit. >> officials say when she is captured she will undergo a health assessment and eventually re-homed in a zoo or aquarium. a local surfer said that is a shame. he had a say for that said keep 841 free. >> every time humans come across nature the does not act their way we have to put it in a cage or take a summer. this is where she belongs. this is our home. we can share it. >> wildlife officials said they had crews out on friday and it will keep trying until they capture her. >> the ocean is her home and everyone else is a visitor. unless everyone else is willing

to stay out of the water, which is unlikely, capturing her is the only way we see this issue resolving. >> lauren martinez, abc 7 news. gloria: new this morning. california leaders ban state-funded travel to three more states after they recently passed anti-lgbtq legislation. missouri, nebraska and wyoming were added to the list. the states' actions recall discriminatory and active government overreach. 26 states follow under california's state-funded travel ban. more than half of the states in the country. the white house has a new plan to forgive $39 billion in student loans. more than 800,000 borrowers could have their student loans forgiven. those are people who have been paying back their loans for 20-25 years. the relief comes from errors in tracking payments which left a lot of borrowers paying more than they needed.

fires in moreno valley and lake mead. evacuation orders were in place for moreno valley residents. the reverend jesse jackson is stepping down as president of the rainbow push coalition. jackson created the civil rights group in 1996. in his announcement, he said he wants to see the organization grow and build on what they have established over the years. jackson is now 81. he was diagnosed with parkinson's disease in 2017. his successor will be introduced at this weekend's 57th annual rainbow push coalition convention. in-n-out is banning employees from wearing masks at some of its restaurants. according to a memo shared on social media, the ban applies in arizona, nevada, colorado, utah and texas but not california. workers can wear a mask if they get a medical exemption or if it is part of their job duties. in its guidelines, it announced

a lot of sunshine. in the north bay, many areas will be in the mid 90's. santa rosa at 100. we have really comfortable t-shirt and shorts weather, 80's for the east bay. 80 in berkeley, 88 in fremont. the inland areas will be sizzling. livermore, 105. brentwood at 106. fairfield, 103. tonight's lows will generally be in the 50's. mid-50's at the coast. even some upper 60's for our inland locations. antioch will be 67 degrees. records are possible today. we will keep an eye on a few locations. the heat will start to ease on monday. closer to normal on tuesday and wednesday before it heats up again next week. it will feel like summer all week long. do as you can to stay cool and

a accused serial killer arrested in connection with three of the 10 victims linked to some beach murders. an architect and married father of two was arrested thursday in new york city. 10 bodies were found on long island's beach. investigator said the man is responsible for three of those murders and is a suspect in a fourth. last year, a new task force was put on the case. court documents show the big break was from when dna from one of the cases matched leftover pizza crust the man threw away. developing news. ups is taking precautionary measures ahead of a possible strike. the delivery company is training staff to take care of deliveries if a strike happens. thousands of unionized workers could potentially walk off the job once their contract expires

at the end of the month. drivers are demanding better benefits and working conditions. the company said it is a temporary solution not a move to push out union workers. it appears the material released by the martinez refinery company earlier this week does not pose a health risk that is according to contra costa health. on tuesday morning, a substance was released by the refinery. people found what looked like ash on their cars and homes. . testing on the material shows it does not pose a long-term health risk. the dust is a byproduct of petroleum manufacturing and can be toxic in large quantities. this morning, we want to tell you about a team that is beating the odds. three separate organ transplants at different points in his life. most recently, he got a new heart. as tara campbell reports, it has

sure all 22 animals they care for have plenty of water. >> you want to constantly check your water and see how much they are drinking every day. the other thing is when you turn your hoses on, remember it has been sitting in the sun. that is scorching water. make sure you call that down before it goes in the trough because horses do not want to drink warm water. >> she has some tricks to make sure all livestock stay hydrated. starting with homemade popsicles with watermelon or carrots. >> we will just put it in a bowl for her. >> creating a mud pit for their potbellied pig, hosing down hey and feeding their horses pellet electrolytes. >> it is wet around their ears and neck, that cools them down. you do not want to hose the main part of them because you do not want them to cramp up. water is constantly dripping on them. >> for pets at home, the animal

rescue foundation out of walnut creek recommends only walking your dog's in the early mornings and late evenings to avoid the hottest part of the day. >> when you are unsure if it is too hot to walk your dog, we recommend touching the asphalt with the back of your hand to get a test. if it is too hot for the back of your hand, it is too hot for your pet's paws. >> look out signs of heat stress or heat stroke after going outside. warning signs include frequent panting, drooling, fatigue or vomiting. >> it is easy to be worried about how hot you are and how hot your house is and forget about the situation your animals are far more stressed. they do not know why it is so hot. make sure they are comfortable. >> if your animal is showing any warning signs of heat stroke, the animal rescue foundation says to bring them inside, get them cool water and contact your

emergency vet right away. lena howland, abc 7 news. gloria: that he is also making jobs harder for outdoor workers but the state is trying to keep them protected. businesses shared safety measures they have in place. cal osha has inspections where they show up to outdoor worksites unannounced to check on staff. a.j.'s landscaping company gives each of their crews a case of water and a bag of ice before their shift. they also have portable tents. if it gets too hot, they will not make their staff work. the owner of a.j.'s says protecting workers is how they get the job done. >> if you do not take care of them, how do you expect them to take care of your customers? gloria: some outdoor workers say to drink more water, find shade and get more breaks in. if you are working today, keep that in mind. drink a lot of water.

temperatures range from mid-50's at the coast -- san francisco, 56, oakland, 59. check out all the 60's popping up. mountain view, san jose. from our east bay hills camera, you will see why it will warm up so quickly. out west, some low clouds in san francisco. other temperatures are already hitting 70 degrees, like fairfield. livermore in the upper 60's. santa rosa, 69. napa, 61 degrees. there is an excessive heat warning for areas away from the water. this morning, it starts at 11 and continues until tomorrow at 11:00 p.m.. temperatures up to 110 degrees. very dangerous. overnight lows only dropping into the 60's in the valleys. you are looking south toward san francisco. we have dangerous heat today and tomorrow.
