it is sunday, july 16 i am gloria rodríguez. are we expecting another warm day today? >> yes, temperatures are going to heat up into the triple digits. excessive heat warning in effect until 11:00 tonight. overnight lows only dropping into the 60's in the valleys and. 70's in the hills. as long as you are away from the water, really you are not included in the excessive heat warning. here's a live shot from emeryville. your day planner for today, so we are going to see more clouds throughout the afternoon. sunrise at 6:00 today and then notice by this afternoon, temperatures will be hot once again inland, 104 degrees and some of the warmest spots. around the bay, low to mid 80's at the beaches, mid to upper 60's.

high clouds passing through as this area of high pressure starts to weaken, which means we have some cooling on the way. i will let you know what to expect with the accuweather 7-day forecast. gloria: some of the highest temperatures hit the east bay, region 100 degrees in some spots. rather than stay inside, some came up with ways to keep cool in the process of facing the heat. lena howland continues coverage from livermore. lena: from the fountains to the fans, and even the ice cream. >> i always go with the pineapple. lena: as temperatures reach triple digits, folks across the east bay were looking for any way they could to cool off. >> i sat here because there's a fan right there. it's very warm, it feels kind of humid. lena: the fountain would typically be packed on a day like this, instead closed for repairs, with spiderwebs covering the drinking fountain.

>> that's frustrating. i think they are doing some repairs. they've been trying to get it back in running shape again. right now, it is on and off. lena: the city said the fountain's ultraviolet lamp failed, which shut the system down. the lamp helps disinfect the water. >> everybody stay home, stay cool, maybe come out after sunset, and then maybe it is still cooler. lena: 15 minutes down the highway, some ice cold relief from dublin's triple digit heat. >> this is my first time. i guess we are just about to get wet. lena: he drove his family from san leandro to visit emerald glen park. the heat never bothered him. >> this is nothing, because i am from nigeria. 90 on a normal day, 90 to like 120 everyday. lena: in pleasanton, some

families braved heat all from a cold treat from meadowlark dairy. >> extremely hot. we came out here to pleasanton. lena: taking the nearest shaded spot for an impromptu picnic. >> we moved up here from l.a. like 15 years ago. we missed this kind of weather. i like it. lena: lena howland, abc 7 news. gloria: in the north bay, the hot weather brought out crowds to santa rosa spring lake lagoon. you see people getting relief from the heat and the water. temperatures in some parts of santa rosa were expected to reach up to 100 degrees. the north bay is experiencing some of the hottest temperatures in the area. bart ran trains at slower speeds yesterday because of the heat. riders may also encounter delays as we are expecting another hot day. 10 minutes added to your travel times.

the heat can cause the train's tracks to shift. tracked the temperatures where you live with the same tools at our abc 7 news weather team uses, use the abc 7 bay area news app, available wherever you stream. in santa rosa, six people ar recovering after a large oak tree branch fell at a picnic table. the group reserved the large picnic area at spring lake regional park. out of the six people, one person had major injuries. they heard a crack before the big tree limb just fell. >> after years of drought and then extreme moisture this winter, the trees tend to soak up a lot of moisture, hold that in their branches, and their branches become too heavy. and it's almost a near impossible to gauge when or if any of these limbs will fall. gloria: the fire department sent out several ambulances. all six people were taken to the hospital. new details in the scandal at the antioch police department.

a new 120 page document filed in court yesterday revealed more controversial text messages from some antioch police officers. according to our media partner, the east bay times, the document showed offensive conversations between at least 12 officers. those messages included racism, homophobia, and anti-semitism, and they were exchanged while they were on the clock. . the documents state that officers do factor in people's race while on trial. this is the result of a superior court search warrant to seize nine officers' phones in an ongoing fbi criminal probe. a bay area woman is back home and reunited with her family after being held captive in mexico for months. abc 7 news reporter tara campbell spoke with one of her close friends and has this update. >> looking up tomorrow, i think we can all breathe a little bit easier. >> relief for the friends and family of monica de leon barba.

surveillance video capturing the moment the woman was abducted in mexico and held captive for eight months. a woman is leading the charge to bring her friend home, pressuring everyone from local officials to president biden. >> i am not sure how much our efforts helped. i would like to think they helped a little bit but we are just happy that she is back. >> in march, the fbi announced a 40,000 dollar reward for information about monica's disappearance and released a video of the kidnapping. you can see monica walking her dog blocks away from her home near guadalajara. she's confronted and forced into a vehicle. the fbi announcing monica was released by her captors friday night, in a statement writing the fbi is pleased to announce that monica de leon barba is safe and and wrote to the united states, where she will be reunited with her family and dog after eight months in captivity. no arrests have been made and an investigation into the

identities of her captors is ongoing. monica's brother posting this photo saturday with his sister on a plane, writing i need to think every single person that helped my family and i through this entire ordeal. we can now finally close this chapter in our lives and work on the long road of healing ahead. he told me the family is not ready to speak publicly but they did give monica's friends the go-ahead to talk with us. >> it's just been such a crazy eight months. it's been really exhausting. it's crazy that we are here and monica is safe. >> eager to see her but understanding of the fact that she may need some space and time. very happy that she's back home. gloria: after two fre shootings in oakland and san francisco on friday, no arrests have been made. each shooting on bay area freeways left two people injured, including an eight-year-old boy in oak it happened on eastbound 580 near harrison street around 6:30

p.m. on friday. the child was caught in the crossfire of a shooting between a dark gray sedan and a maroon colored suv. the chp tells abc 7 news that the eight-year-old boy was in a car that was not involved in that shooting. in the second shooting, a woman were shot in the leg while traveling southbound on interstate 280 near alameda boulevard on friday afternoon. investigators say at least three shots were fired toward her suv. sky 7 was above the scene of the incident. the woman was able to pull over on the shoulder of the free way to get some help. let's get a check of the forecast with francis this morning. >> get ready for another hot day. check out this gorgeous view from sutro looking towards the salesforce tower. we are dealing with some fog, especially at the coast, where visibility has dropped in half moon bay to only one fourth of a mile. i will let you know when we can get some cooling in the

3, 55, 57, the powerball was 18. the next drawing is tomorrow night. singer and songwriter taylor's has a new reputation -- taylor swift has a new reputation for boosting the u.s. economy. the federal reserve says her eras tour is increasing hotel revenue across the nation. fans broke a record for most hotel rooms occupied in chicago last month. 44,000 rooms were booked the night of swift's concert. it is estimated her tour could generate over $445 billion in consumer spending. we told you about hotels closing in san francisco because of a lack of business travel. that's spilling over into the east bay, where the owners for key hotel properties are being surrendered to banks. leslie brinkley has that story. >> ashford hospitality trust is

leading lenders sees ownership of 19 hotels nationwide, including the 249 room embassy suites hotel in walnut creek across from the bart station. they said in a statement they are walking away from paying the mortgages on the hotels to save over $300 million in payouts and capital expenditures. in the troubled waters of the current hospitality market. 4 of the hotels are in the east bay. >> we have not talked with ashford trust. we've talked with the operator of the facility and, you know, they are naturally concerned because they all have jobs. and our belief is that because their occupancy numbers are still remain pretty strong, that that operation will continue. >> other where the keys will be surrendered to lenders include courtyard by marriott and a residence inn in newark.

post-covid, business travel is down. hotels based on business travel are faced with reinventing themselves for leisure or special events and for a more remote workforce. jason long is an expert in providing technology to corporations to negotiate and book hotel space. >> they have to rethink, because it's not just about staying the night in a hotel and going into the office the next day. they are repurchasing, reengineering the hotels. we have the leisure phenomenon where business travelers are mixing leisure with business. >> in walnut creek, the visitors bureau promoting stays for youth sports and color sports fans. >> i think hotels are venturing into spaces where they can offer themselves to different markets and we are backing them up with marketing to help them get into that reinvention space until business travel comes back. >> in the meantime, the future of 4 east bay hotels is

uncertain as banks take control. i am leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. gloria: tomorrow, contra costa health will hold a meeting to discuss a third-party review of the massive oil spill at the richmond refinery marine terminal in 2021. a small hole in a pipeline leaked more than 750 gallons of diesel water mixture into the bay. the report found that the spill was "a failure to follow good engineering and industry practices." that meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at the richmond convention center. happening now, 4 separate wild fires are burning more than 8000 acres in riverside county. the rabbit fire burned 7600 acres and it is only 5% contained. evacuation orders are in place for residents in beaumont and gilman hot springs, and crews are also working to put out fires near moreno valley and lake matthews. evacuations are in place for

those in and around lake matthews. the cause of the wildfires is under investigation. allergy season is in full swing, and it may be worse for some californians this year after a pollen spike. experts say that years of drought, followed by a winter storm, caused an uptick in pollen produced by sugar pine trees. that pollen is making its way into the lake, on cars and on roofs near tahoe. the increase in pollen is noticeably visible, but experts believe it is harmless. >> everything is tinted yellow the last couple of weeks. >> nature is still doing its own thing, regardless of what we want. people who have lived here for decades and decades have not seen anything like it. gloria: after pollen season ends, it still may take a few weeks for the yellow cloud of pollen to clear up from the lake. the california state fair is underway in sacramento, where we could see record-setting temperatures this weekend. hyzaar expect it at 107 degrees

golden gate bridge also. down towards market street and east bay, you see the orange in the sky. ahead of the sunrise, it's really looking gorgeous. in san francisco, 55, oakland 56, san jose 64, palo alto half moon bay at 52 degrees. this time, we are looking from the east bay hills, out west toward san francisco. some temperatures are quite mild. for example, livermore is 67 degrees right now. santa rosa also 60, so some areas did not quite cool down enough for folks in some inland areas. here is a live look from our roof camera. the flag is blown, the breeze will be picking up this afternoon, so that's going to keep teens school at the beaches. we have dangerous heat inland once again today. there is going to be some high clouds passing through later on this afternoon and this evening, bringing us a very slight chance of some dry lightning tonight.

i just wanted to mention that. it's mainly in the north bay. we are talking only 10%-15% chance. much cooler weather for the middle of the week for inland areas. excessive heat warning until 11:00 tonight, the areas highlighted in red. if you are away from the water, this is where highs could be in the 90's to over 110 degrees. overnight lows only dropping into the 60's in the valleys or 70's over the hills. notice of these high clouds passing through, they are coming in from the south, as high pressure weakens. and then these areas of green, there could be some moisture, but most likely in the north bay, that is that slight chance of dry lightning. highs today again quite warm, especially in morgan hill, 100 degrees, san jose 91, santa cruz 78, so a little bit cooler with some cloud cover. at the beaches today, half moon bay only warming up to 65,

millbrae 79, lower 80's on the peninsula. downtown san francisco will be in the low 70's. at the coast, upper 60's, and look for 90's in many areas of the north bay, novato 93, santa rosa 99. east bay looks comfortable, upper 70's to upper 80's. inland areas once again near or above 100 degrees to 105 i brentwood but 100 in pleasanton. the lows will be in the 50's generally with some 60's, may even 70 out there. we will see increasing cloud cover, so we have a trough moving in towards the middle of the week. for today, with the accuweather 7-day forecast, the heat holds on, triple digits once again inland. it eases a bit on monday, tuesday, and wednesday, much cooler, closer to average before we warm up again into next weekend, but not as hot as this weekend. gloria: what is going on within

police incident reports, there were more than 20,000 vehicle thefts in the city. as abc seven luz peña tells he is hoping his attire will scare them off. >> he has lived in san francisco for over 20 years. and lately, instead of going by his legal name, people call him -- >> i am called boots, working from inside rather than inside. >> covering his face with a ski to protect his identity, boots walks around his neighborhood, fisherman's wharf, looking like this, and with a nonlethal weapon on his waist that looks like a gun. his goal is to scare off thieves from breaking into cars. >> the criminals are getting to know us. i would not call it an organized anything, it is just concerned citizens. every day is a small victory, you know? you chase them off from one corner. >> for years>>, he has captured videos of car break-ins.

now, he says frustration led him to take matters into his own hands. he said he is doing it to help the area where he lives and owns a business. >> the taurus's are not going to come -- tourists are not going to come here. people have lived here and been here for their entire lives and it's not fair. >> according to sfpd incident data, on average, there are 67 thefts from vehicles every day in san francisco. outside of this brunch spot, employees see car break-ins on a daily basis. >> they leave>> all their stuff in there and less than five seconds, they grab your stuff and they are gone. >> many share a common sense of helplessness. >> i am frustrated. you cannot do anything. >> yesterday, while boots was walking in the area, sfpd arrested him for brandishing an imitation firearm, which is a misdemeanor. >> we do not recommend anyone doing that. we understand everyone's frustration. officers are frustrated and taking the number of police reports regarding auto burglaries occurring throughout the city.

soaked up the sun at the annual blues & brews fest in pleasant hill. ryan curry talked to the organizers and others who are trying to enjoy the summerlike weather. ryan: that sunshine is not playing around saturday. temperatures in the east bay exceeded triple digits in many spots. one of those was in pleasant hill, where people were doing anything to escape the heat. >> drink a lot of water. ryan: kathleen sims was on her morning walk through downtown but this walk involve plenty use of the shade. >> i always come out, i go to peace coffee and get a m and sit around and look at people and say high. ryan: somewhere using the park swimming pool as a place to cool off. it was the second day of the blues & brews fest. the tents and equipment were in place from the previous table what is new to those at the event is the intense heat. >> last night, we had our pre-party. if that was any indication, the

heat did not stop people from coming out and enjoying live music and beer in the park. ryan: jennifer says most of the festival will be held in the shade. the festival installed a large tent to provide as much shade as possible but also put several smaller tents up to offer more places away from the sun. >> we shifted it around a little bit some people could enjoy the shady spots under the trees. we have our community partner, city a pleasant hill is sponsoring this, so we keep people cool. ryan: the state unveiled a new website, a place where people could go to learn about heat and safety tips as the state continues to see more heat events each year. >> extreme heat will continue to get hotter in california, with the potential of causing more heat related illness and deaths. ryan: it leaves people like sims hoping for cooler weather soon. >> it's what we got so i am trying to enjoy it. ryan: in pleasant hill, ryan curry, abc7news. gloria: we first told you about

the 3 police as a self-taught survivalist with military experience, escaped from the warren county jail in pennsylvania on july 6. late saturday afternoon, police got a tip from some residents who saw somebody suspicious behind their home in west warren. >> they encountered burh conversation occurred, brief conversation, asked what he was doing there, he said something about camping. the owner of the property recognized him, got his wife back in the golf cart, and drove away from there so that he could immediately contact us. >> state police say search teams set up a perimeter and took him into custody without incident. >> looks tired and worn out, as we thought he might. he is still wearing his prison pants turned inside out, he's dirty, wet. >> police say he used bedsheets

gloria: united airlines and its pilots reached a tentative agreement on a contract that could substantially increase pay. it calls for annual raises which bump wages by up to 40% over four years. the union says a deal is worthtd and it is similar to a pact that delta made earlier this year with pilots. if approved, it would end four years of bargaining, including picketing and possible strike vote. nearly 100 pounds that were almost empty are expected to stay full all summerlong. officials are calling it a sign of the state's strong water supply following winter storms. abc7news southbay reporter zach fuentes tells us about the pond's purpose. >> we've heard the states water supply is the best it's been in years. >> this year's result from our automated snow sensor network is actually greater than any other year that we have recorded since

the snow sensor network was deployed roughly in the mid-1980's. >> now, we are beginning to see amazing visuals that prove it. not too long ago, this pond was empty. while ponds like this may be nice to visit, that's not the purpose they were created to serve. their actually water supply facilities that hold water from places like local reservoirs, or even water given to valley water from the state or federal government. >> it's funny to look at a beautiful pond like this and consider it a water supply facility, but really this is percolating down into the ground and feeding our underground aquifers. >> because valley water has been able to start fully recharging the groundwater supply for the first time since 2018, nearly all of the ponds can stay full. this is what is blocking water from the guadalupe river that allows it to move into percolation ponds in san jose. >> it's really exciting. we all dealt with those big atmospheric river's that came through during the winter and it
