let's start with a quick look at your weather. we had a hot day yesterday. it -- is it going to be as hot today? >> the excessive heat if you are at the beaches or around the bay, it is the fog and marine layer that is going to keep milder. you can barely see the top of the golden gate bridge. 9:00, look at the range of temperatures. for these at the coast, low 80's inland right now. it will be hot this afternoon. inland areas, up to 104. lots of mid 80's. at the coast, mid-60's. if you are tired of the heat, i will tell you about a cool down in the seven-day forecast. gloria: some of the highest temperatures hit the east bay, reaching 100 degrees in some spots. rather than stay inside, some

came up with ways to keep cool in the process. lena howland continues our weather coverage from livermore. reporter: from the fountains, fans and ice cream -- >> i always go with the pineapple. reporter: as temperatures reach triple digits, folks across the east bay were looking for any way they could to cool off. >> there is a fan right there and there is a little movement, but it is warm. reporter: livermore rules -- liverpool's fountain would typically repack, instead, closed for repairs. >> that is frustrating. i think they are doing repairs. they have been trying to get it back running in good shape. right now, it is on and off. reporter: earlier this week, the city said the fountains violet -- ultraviolet lamp failed. it helps disinfect the water. >> stay cool. they will come out after sunset.

then, maybe it is cooler. reporter: 15 minutes down the highway, some ice cold really from dublin struble digit heat. >> this is my first time. reporter: all the way from san leandro just to visit emerald glen park. you can tell by his long sleeves the heat never bothered him. >> this is nothing. i am from nigeria. on a normal day, reporter: in pleasanton, some families brave the heat for a cold treat from an east bay institution, but told arc dairy. >> is a beautiful day, it is hot. we wanted to enjoy calm. reporter: taking the nearest shaded spot for an impromptu picnic with his family and friends. >> we moved up here from l.a. 15 years ago. we miss this weather. it is beautiful.

i like it. gloria: in the north bay, the hot weather out crowds to santa rosa's spring lake lagoon. you can see people getting relief from the heat in that water. temperatures in some parts of santa rosa were expected to reach up to 100 degrees. the north bay is experiencing some of the hottest temperatures in the bay area. bart ran train yesterday because of the heat. writers may encounter delays today as we ate -- we are expecting other hot day. you are encouraged added 10 minutes to your travel times. the heat can cause the tracks to shift. available wherever you stream. happening today, be gathering in san francisco for a great cause. aids walk sf 2023 return step

out, aids walk fan. we do not need it yet, but in case i do, i have got one. tents are gathering, people are gathering for this will that begins -- walk that begins in about an hour which we will carry live on our stream at 10:00. it is going to kick off this event in grand stop. i am joined by frank duff, senior vice president of for lg at gilead. >> great to be here. i can feel the joy, it is building. great weather, beautiful place to be. >> it is joy. even though this is a serious subject at aids walk, this is a celebration. it is about the joy of people coming together, making a difference. >> we at gilead have been involved in this incredible event for 21 years. we have a deep commitment. it is near and dear to our heart. we recognize the contributions.

the event has been 36 years in total, countless bay area folks have contributed in many ways. that has supported a lot of programs and work that have benefited those impacted by hiv erie we are happy to be part of it. -- hiv. we are happy to be a part of it. >> tell me about gilead's commitment to this epidemic. >> we have been in this area for decades. similar to the aids walk itself, we recognize that impressive advances in treatment and prevention have been made. we recognize we need more treatment options and prevention options. we continue to be focused on that and we are focused on the ultimate goal, bringing a cure to hiv. reporter: we are getting closer every year to that. you have made huge strides. >> absolutely. it is hard work, but steady

progress is made and we are in it until the finish line. it is important to us. reporter: you are optimistic about the future of treatment for this disease? >> absolutely. seeing the research and the broader scientific community, the scientist -- the research our scientists are involved in, it is an exciting time to be part of. reporter: you are here personally, rode your bike to be a part of this event. means a lot to you, personally. >> absolutely. i have been in hiv medicine, i am an infectious disease., member of the infected community. my husband and i have been part of this for 30 years. we were there at the beginning, we want to be there at the end. this is a long passion for me and so many people i work with in gilead. reporter: frank, thanks for everything you are doing and talking with me today. >> you are most welcome. reporter: frank duff from

not reinvest in the community, who is going to? reporter: joni, your comments on why this means something to you? >> i have been doing this since 1988. it is a part of my dna at this point. hiv is not in the headlines anymore. a lot of people forget it. a lot of my friends say, do we still need to raise money for it? it is not over. the grassroots nature of aids walk funds a lot of smaller organizations that do not have the capacity to do fundraising on their own. this helps a lot of people who do not get government funding or corporate funding. every pair of boots on the ground matters. reporter: thank you very much. good to see you guys, you are doing amazing work. 16,000 people in san francisco still live with hiv and aids. it may not be on the headlines, but it is very much a part of the fabric of this community and frankly, across california.

140,000 people still live with hiv and aids. infection rates have dropped. prevention is working. there are lots of great news stories as a result of what is happening because of events like this. but, there is still a lot of work to be done. opening ceremonies kick off at 10:00. we are going to carry it live on our website and streaming devices. two in for that. i will be back later with more on aids walk san francisco at: gate park. gloria: i am curious. i know the walk starts at 10:00. are there a lot of people out there right now? reporter: the opening ceremony starts at 10:00. they will walk shortly thereafter. we've got hundreds of people already here. it will continue to pick up. because of the pandemic, this became a virtual event, not just in the park. people will be walking in their neighborhoods and participating in that way.

where the owners of four key hotel properties are being surrendered to banks. leslie brinkley has that story. reporter: ashford hospitality trust is letting lenders sees ownership of 19 hotels nationwide. including the 249 room suites hotel in walnut creek across from the pleasant hill art station. ashford said in a statement they are walking away from paying the mortgages on the hotels to save over $300 million in payouts from capital expenditures in the troubled waters of the current hospitality market. four of the hotels are in the east bay. >> we have not talked with ashford trust. we talked with the operator of the facility. they are naturally c because they all have jobs. our belief is that because their occupancy numbers still remain strong that that operation will continue. reporter: other east bay hotels

where the keys will be surrendered to lenders include courtyard by marriott and a residence in, both in work, along with the courtyard by marriott at oakland airport. post-covid business travel is down. hotels based on business travel are faced with reinventing themselves for leisure or special events and a more remote workforce. jason is an expert in providing technology to corporations to negotiate and book hotel space. >> they have to rethink. it is not just about staying the night into a hotel and going into an office the next day. they are repurposed things he hotels. we have the pleasure phenomenon, where business travelers are mixing leisure with business. reporter: in walnut creek, the visitors bureau is promoting stays for sports fans. >> i think our hotels are venturing into spaces where they can offer themselves to different markets and we are

backing them up with marketing to help them get into that reinvention space. until business travel comes back. reporter: in the meantime, the future of four east bay hotels is uncertain as banks take control. gloria: santa rosa road fire department says a boy is being treated for life-threatening burns after he was rescued from an apartment iron. it happened around 6:00 last night on dutton avenue, southwest of downtown santa rosa. investigators say the boy was rescued from the second floor. he was rushed to a nearby hospital. firefighters were initially told by residents that an adult was also trapped in the apartment, but crews did not find any other victims. the california state fair is underway in sacramento. we could see record-setting temperatures this weekend. highs are expected as high as 107 degrees.

in 2000 17, temperatures hit 105 degrees during the fair. horse racing is canceled because of the heat and if you plan on going, the state fair does offer ac in most buildings. frances dinglasan is tracking the forecast. if you have, if you are inland, you need that ac. frances: it is going to be on, especially this afternoon when the heat peaks. areas away from the water are going to be hot. that is when we have the excessive heat warning. around the bay or at the beaches, it is going to be mild and temperatures in the 60's because of the fog. live doppler 7 satellite radar image, a shallower arena layer compared to normal. mount tam, high clouds passing through. it is warming up quickly for some of our inland areas. in santa rosa, it is 69 right now. napa, 69. fairfield already in the low 80's. concord, 73.

we contrast it with this live shot of the golden gate bridge, where it is socked in. half moon bay visibility is down to a fourth of a mile, that is where we are seeing the if these right now. -- seeing the 50's right now. areas around the bay, low 70's. oakland, 65 degrees. for the aids walk today, it is going to be a pleasant day. we are starting off with low clouds in san francisco and golden gate park. we will be warming up into the mid 60's by this afternoon. the sea breeze will pick up and temperatures will not get too warm in san francisco and for the aids walk. a live view from emeryville chose san francisco and gray skies. we have dangerous today, it expires at 11:00 p.m. there is a chance for isolated thunderstorms tonight.

much cooler weather ivy middle of the week -- by the middle of the week. excessive heat warning, the areas highlighted red. overnight lows have not that much, in the 60's in the valleys and 70's in the hills. highs today will be similar to yesterday's numbers. at the beaches, half moon bay, 65. oakland, 79. still hot inland. areas above 100 degrees in the interior communities like concord, antioch. the fire danger index little bit elevated. moderate to high this afternoon. that changes tomorrow. around the state, very hot temperatures. there is an excessive heat warning for most of the state. sacramento, 107 today. we will see the high clouds

passing through and this may bring a chance of thunderstorm activity in the north bay this evening and tomorrow. a 10% to 15% chance. look at the cooldown heading our way tuesday, wednesday. here is the accuweather 7-day forecast. another hot day, but the ease is tomorrow. a lot of sunshine, but much cooler by tuesday, wednesday and that is a debt before we ramp things up again for the end of the week. gloria: looks like the beach is the place to be again today. there will probably be a lot of traffic. frances: and low clouds and fog. gloria: thank you.

he is hoping he will scare them off. reporter: he has lived in san francisco for over 20 years and lately, instead of going by his legal name, people call him -- >> i am called mmots. -- moots. reporter: covering his face with a ski mask protect his identity, boots walks around his neighborhood, fisherman's wharf, looking like this and with a nonlethal weapon on his waist. that looks like a gun. his goal is to scare off thieves from raking into cars. >> the criminals are getting to know us. i would not call it organized anything. it is just concerned citizens. every day is a small victory. you chase them off from one corner. >> for years, he has captured videos of car break-ins. now, he says frustration led him to take matters into his own hands. he is doing it to help the area where he lives and owns a business. >> the tourists are not going to

come here. the businesses of some people who have been here for their entire lives, it is not fair. reporter: according to sfpd's incident data, on average, there are 67 thefts from vehicles every day in san francisco. outside of this brunch spot, employees see car break-ins on a daily basis. >> they leave their stuff in there, then boom shakalaka, less than five seconds, they grab their stuff and they are gone. reporter: they share a common sense of helplessness. yesterday while boots was walking in the area, sfpd arrested him for brandishing an imitation firearm which is a misdemeanor. >> we do not recommend anyone doing that. we understand everyone's frustration. officers are frustrated and taking the number of police reports regarding auto burglaries occurring throughout the city. however, there is a system in place to do that. reporter: sfpd says they are shortstaffed. but, to boots, he viewed this as another victory.

>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. gloria: good morning. happy sunday to you. we are starting this half-hour with a look at your weather. shorts weather today? frances: shorts and shirts if you are inland. sweater weather at the coast. we've got the fog and shallow marine layer, which you can see from our camera looking towards the top of the golden gate bridge, which is barely visible right now. temperatures range from upper 50's to low 80's right now because of the range of conditions. there is an excessive heat warning today away from the water. inland areas will be reaching 104 degrees around the bay. look for lots of mid 80's. at the coast, mild in the mid 60's. cooling is on the way starting tomorrow. i will have those details in the accuweather 7-day forecast. gloria: thank you.

in the east bay, people soaked up the sun at the annual blues and roots festival in pleasant hill. ryan curry talked to organizers and others who are trying to enjoy the summerlike weather. reporter: that sun is not playing around saturday. temperatures in the east bay exceeded triple digits in many spots. one of those what's in pleasant hill, where people were doing anything to escape the heat. >> drink a lot of water. reporter: kathleen was on her walk through downtown. this walk involved plenty use of the shade. >> i always come out. i go to pete's coffee and get a moksha and sit around -- a matcha and sit around. reporter: elsewhere, some are using the park pool as a place to cool off. pleasant hill was holding its second day of the blues and bruise your festival. the tencent equipment were in place from the previous day. what is new is the intense heat. >> last night, we had our pre-party.

the heat did not stop people from coming out and enjoying music and beer in the park. reporter: jennifer is one of the coordinators of the event and says most of the festival will be held in the shade. festival installed a large tent to provide as much shade as possible, but they -- they put smaller tents up. >> we shifted it around so people could enjoy the shady spots under the trees. our community partner is sponsoring this, we keep people cool. reporter: the state unveiled a new website called heat ready ca, a place people could go to learn about safety tips as the state sees more -- each year. >> the potential of causing more heat related illness and deaths. >> it leaves people like sims hoping for cooler weather soon. >> it is what we got, so. i am trying to enjoy it. gloria: we first told y

far, we can use more help. go to sf.aidswalk.net. make a donation, then enjoy the rest of your sunday. maybe you can walk with us in spirit, take a walk in your neighborhood after making that donation. i am in sherman meadow golden gate park where we have been for decades, trying to raise money and awareness to alleviate the suffering caused by hiv and aids. we have made progress over the years, there are so many good stories to talk about. there is still a great deal of work to do. as we speak, 16 thousand people in san francisco are still living with hiv and aids. there is still transmission of this disease every year. those transmission levels have dropped significantly because of awareness, preventative drugs like prep and others. there is good news. still, it is a serious problem in our community and that is what aids walk is about after these decades. so many volunteers have come to raise money.

we have organizations that are going to benefit from this event. reporter: robert, even though we do not hear headlines as much about aids and hiv every day like we did many years ago, certainly we started doing this aids walk -- it is very much an issue we need to be concerned about. >> these are the agencies we are here to serve. all here doing the work with people who have been affected and are still affected. and still need our help. reporter: we talked a lot about building a better bay area. it guides our coverage every day on the television station. people, organizations trying to make a difference. i can think of nothing more in line with that idea, building a better air area -- building a better bay area, then this celebration. >> celebrating those in the past and those still with us. all those who came out from the
