extremes, from historic heat to wildfires and even floods. and soon more american will be paying for it. this morning, experts are warning of an insurance crisis unfolding in multiple states due to extreme weather that's becoming more damaging and deadly. >> insurance companies are realizing that climate change is directly affecting their bottom line. >> in pennsylvania, nearly five inches of rain fell in just 90 minutes saturday, killing at least five people in bucks county. a woman visiting from south carolina was killed after her family's vehicle was overtaken by water. her two young children still missing overnight. this new video of a flooded road shows the conditions at the time. meanwhile, historic heat has tightened its grip across the west and south. today, phenix is expected to see a record nine 19th consecutive day of temperatures topping 110. and off south florida, even the water is in the mid 90s,

threatening the coral and setting the stage for more powerful hurricanes fueled by warmer ocean temperatures. now more insurance companies are pulling out of states that are deemed a high climate risk. triple a and farmers insurance are the latest companies to pull out of florida and state farm and allstate have stopped accepting new home insurance policies in california due to wildfires. >> we think of florida, arizona , louisiana as being popular retirement destinations and those destinations just got a bit costlier to move to because of rising insurance costs. >> as natural disasters get more expensive, experts say insurance premiums will increase and they say home buyers should take signals from the insurance companies, as private insurers have a lot of money at stake. >> and so households need to take some signal from the choices that these private insurers are making and recognize that it's now going to be more expensive to live in risky areas as at least 20 insurance companies have also

pulled out of louisiana in the past two years. >> some lawmakers are calling for a federal response to help homeowners. >> 20 states are also under air quality alerts today from the plains to the northeast east due to smoke from those canadian wildfires. canada's government is requesting more international help. 24 million acres have burned. so far. that's an area the size of new jersey, connecticut, massachusetts, vermont and delaware combined. and breaking overnight, russian missiles and drones rained down on ukraine today, targeting several areas, including the port city of odessa. ukrainian officials say they shot down the missiles, but several homes were damaged. the airstrikes appear to be in retaliation for yesterday's explosion that damaged a critical russian bridge to crimea. >> a decision by russia could push food prices here in the us even higher. moscow is pulling out of a deal that allowed ukraine to export grain by sea. countries around the world rely on those grain shipments which could send prices soaring. the war is already pushing the cost of some groceries higher due to grain shortages. the price of bread here in the us jumped more

than 11% last month, compared to just a year ago. the cost of cookies jumped 8, while beer rose 5% just days after a suspected serial killer was arrested. >> in new york, there's a growing mystery in the pacific northwest, concerned that another serial killer could be responsible for the deaths of several women in oregon. here's abc's lionel moise this morning. >> a major developer in the investigation into the deaths of several women in oregon. everybody's kind of taking a deep breath now, just one month after police suggested the mystery deaths of six women were not connected, officials now say they believe at least four killings are connected. the victims bodies were found in wooded and rural areas between february and may 9th. agencies took part in the investigation leading them to a person of interest. but officials have not announced the name of that person or how they determined the deaths are connected. abc affiliate katu reports. the person of interest was already

in custody, a relief for families of the women. people get hurt, killed or whatever. >> but you know, it's not me. you know, and then when it hits you, it's like, wow, it's different. >> nearly 3000 miles away, new clues in the gilgo beach serial killings on new york's long island. >> we hope to find anything and everything. >> police searching storage units and the home of rex human combing through what they call a literal mountain of evidence, including a quarter million dollars worth of guns, more than 200 firearms, they say, were found in his basement, double what he had legally registered. >> we wanted to take him into custody somewhere outside of the house because of access to those weapons. >> police describe his online activity as disturbing, saying he searched for torture. some of the searches that we saw that he was doing is alarming. >> it's very, very concerning. and once again, as i have to

make sure that everybody understands that it's a very good thing that we got this animal off the streets. the 59 year old architect and married father is accused of killing at least three women in late 2010. >> their bodies were found within a quarter mile of each other. the victims were all petite in their 20s and sex workers. police say he secretly solicited the women using burner phones. humans lawyer dismissing the allegations, saying there is nothing that would suggest that he is involved in these incidents. neighbors reacting to the arrest that he was a strange guy. >> his wife was a strange person . >> human is also being called the prime suspect in the death of a fourth woman. he's pleaded not guilty. in the other cases and is due back in court next month. as for the oregon killings, that person of interest has not been charged. rhiannon andrew, lionel, thank you for that. >> one of the birmingham, alabama, firefighters who were shot inside their firehouse last week has died. 28 year old jordan melton officially became

a firefighter just last month. he and fellow firefighter jamal jones were both shot just as they were beginning their shift last wednesday. police believe it was a targeted attack, but there is no word on the motive. no arrests have been made. now to the race for president and florida governor ron desantis under pressure at a town hall last night. >> he was asked what sets him apart from former president trump. in the meantime, trump's lawyers face a big day in court today. abc's em nguyen is here now with more. am. good morning. >> good morning, andrew. the 2024 race is in full swing and trump is still the solid favorite among likely republican voters, despite the former president facing multiple indictments with more potentially on the way. today, a key hearing for former president donald trump's federal case regarding his alleged mishandling of classified documents after leaving office. trump's attorney and the special counsel, jack smith, both set to appear in court today to decide how secret records will be shared between the two parties. as this case moves towards trial. smith describing the

hearing as a crucial step in their prosecution after trump was indicted last month on 37 felony charges, which include unlawful retention of classified documents and the obstruction of the government's investigation. the former president has pleaded not guilty and legal troubles continue in georgia for trump after the state supreme court rebuffed his last ditch bid to quash the work of fulton county's district attorney and her probe of alleged misconduct in the wake of the 2020 presidential election. georgia's republican governor expressing disappointed that the district attorney's case was taking so long. >> i think that just sows distrust in the system. we'll see what she comes out with at the appropriate time. >> this says trump remains the runaway leader amongst 2024 republican candidates in south carolina. florida governor ron desantis struggled to win over trump supporters. i love for president trump comes from all the display there, all the things that he's been through. >> i appreciate what president

emergency chute fell out of a united airlines plane. the slide dropped from a 767 and fell onto a home near chicago's o'hare airport. boeing 767 have been involved in two similar incidents in recent years. >> we got a scam alert air travelers are now being warned about the new scam to try and steal their money. cyber criminals are actually changing airline customer service phone numbers on google. so passengers who believe they are calling the airline are actually talking to scammers who try to get their credit card information. victims should act quickly, tell them what happened to you, report the fraud and see if they can help you and get rebooked. >> but if you find yourself in this situation where you have been scammed and time is of the essence, experts say victims should contact their bank first and then the airline using the phone number that's on the airline's website. >> we turn now to the mystery surrounding a major jewelry heist, a mystery now at the center of an expensive legal battle that's pretty extensive,

for fact, correct? >> that's i mean, that's a lot of stuff. >> newly released video shows the moments after what could be the largest jewelry heist in us history. >> you're going to see for yourself what it's like for these two sheriff's deputies to pull up in this truck right after this multi million dollar theft. it's an eye popper. >> it was last year at a rest stop in california where a brinks tractor trailer was loaded with items from the international gem and jewelry show. >> we had a lock on here. we had a lock on the area, and that's gone. i don't even know where the lock is. >> deputies body camera video shows two brinks drivers, one of them sleeping as the other went into the rest stop for 27 minutes. that's when the driver says someone broke into the truck. later, the deputies and the driver are seen looking through the inventory, realizing that 24 bags of jewelry were missing. i counted 49 was 49. >> out of how many 73. >> that's a lot. yeah. oh now brinks and the jewelry owners are tangled in a lawsuit.

>> the owners claim the items stolen, including diamonds, gems and watches are worth $100 million. >> this isn't lifestyles of the rich and famous. these are mom and pop jewelers. i have a client, 66 years old. he lost everything in this theft. >> but attorneys for brinks argue the company is only responsible for the amount the jewels were insured for only about $9 million, far less than the $100 million being claimed and no arrests have been made in the case. >> coming up, the state with the highest rate of alzheimer's cases. >> also ahead, we hear from the worker who fell 150ft off this bridge.
