this problem a closer look for you. dan: j.r. stone is on top of the story and has new information about when cameras could help with these investigations. reporter: this scene. >> reporter: unfolded quickly along interstate 980 in oakland tuesday afternoon around 2:45. >> seven to nine shots heard. they were next to the freeway in that area and it sounded like it came from the freeway. reporter: chp officers could be seen closing off eastbound lanes after a victim showed up at the hospital with a gunshot wound and reported it happening along 980. shell casings were later found according to scanner traffic. the extent of the injuries are unknown but this scene marks the third bay area highway shooting in five days.

an eight-year-old was left in grave condition after being struck by a bullet while riding in an unrelated vehicle along i-5 80 in oakland friday evening . also friday, a woman was shot in the leg while traveling southbound along i to 80 in san francisco. >> what happened to government protecting the populace? that is our number one mission. are we failing right now? reporter: dan romero is vice mayor of hercules and in full support of freeway cameras. something he helped push for and get along i-80 in hercules. >> it won't stop a shooting it's that deterrent in our area here in west county. there haven't been as many. reporter: those with the california state transportation agency say 120 cameras have already been installed in the area along highway four

currently not being used. 40 more will be installed soon. officials say following the installation of cameras in the field, caltrans will start evaluating the cameras capabilities and begin deployment and usage in gradual phases. romero says this process needs to be pushed ahead immediately in light of continued shootings. >> there's blood on individuals hands. reporter: i spent the night working with our statistics crew . according to the chp data they obtained, there were 30 bay area freeway shootings in the first four months of the year. 19 of those were in alameda county. j.r. stone, abc7news. ama: if you want to dig more have an interactive tool to look at crime rates where you live. there's data for san francisco, oakland, and san jose.

dan: a raise but the issue of increasing her salary touched off a spirited debate at tonight's city council meeting. it passed by a vote of 6-2. >> i'm going to vote no to that item. if it was a different time, i would think about it twice. right now, it's very hard for me to explain to my residence, my neighbors that are suffering, need a place to eat, and the city is a mess. dan: her salary will go up by $13,000 to do hundred 16,000 per year, the minimum bum. the city council wants someone else to deal with the mayors salary in the future. >> i want to include to direct the city administrator to return to the council as i stated earlier in a timely manner with
