of a deadly crash in the south bay where an infant has died. amanda is live in san jose this morning with the details. this is so sad, amanda. amanda: this is so incredibly awful. details are limited to but we do know that this was just a horrible tragedy. san jose police confirming that an infant was killed after a car or a driver crashed into three people. the scene is still active here on the east side of the city. sj pd says they responded before midnight reporting that a driver hit the baby, a woman, and a second child at the intersection . the infant died on the scene. the two others were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. we are told the driver remained on the scene. when it comes to statistics, police say this is the 26th fatal collision and 27th fatal

traffic death of the year. in previous coverage of fatal crashes we have heard from officials with the vision zero task worse, which focuses efforts on reducing traffic deaths and injuries. last year was particularly alarming with 670 people injured in speeding related crashes. 58 people were reported killed or severely injured in 2022 and the overnight death of a baby only amplifies the issue. >> it's bad. people don't respect no more, you know? i say it in the mornings as i cross these streets every day. cars are always trying to beat the light, you know? everyone is rushing. to the crash but the city has often said that speeding is what leads to the fatal crashes on

district streets. districts four and five were we are now have some of the most traffic deaths and severe injury crashes of the 10 council districts. we are waiting on more information from police but what we know is that a driver crashed into three people late last night, killing a baby and sending a woman and another child to the hospital. police have not yet confirmed the relationship between the three. for now, reporting live from san jose, abc 7 news. reggie: today is the next step for one company to acquire two san francisco hospitals. ucsf is looking to pur saint francis from dignity health. they will discuss the request at the meeting in san francisco. the process is expected to take several months. speaking of the university of california, the mayor is tossing around ideas about how to revitalize downtown and one of the ideas is to build a new

campus downtown. mayor london breed and the city attorney sent a letter to the chair of the uc board of regents asking them to consider a new campus. the mayor set on twitter that there is room for housing, classrooms, lab space and more. she wants sf city college and sfusd to consider using downtown office space. kumasi: the mayor is also considering moving city workers into empty office buildings and is asking the administrator's office to lease space in the financial district including the department of real estate that operates real estate services for 27 agencies across the city saying they can lead recovery efforts by investing in office space for city workers while considering land or buildings for housing. there will be a meeting today to brainstorm other ideas for using empty commercial buildings that will be run by the planning department, the office of economic and workforce development, and other

organizations. among the ideas discussed is converting nonresidential buildings to housing and new housing. there is also conversation around construction in the area and they are considering how to get retail entertainment is in us is to return. reggie: and another facet the mayor is weighing in on, robo taxis, we have seen instances where they have been stuck on the street. the mayor was on a 3:00 show called getting answers yesterday saying she liked the concept of the service but has her reservations. >> as they are being tested we want to make sure we are working hand-in-hand with those companies to ensure safety. ultimately we don't necessarily have the authority to regulate this industry, but we have made it clear to various industries that we want to partner and want them to address the safety concerns and make the adjustments. they have the technology in some cases to do so. reggie: the public utilities

commission is planning to vote on whether they will allow autonomous taxis to operate around the clock. they have already delayed the vote twice. a san francisco walgreens now locking freezers after workers said thieves target the store 15 to 20 times a day. this is the walgreens on 17th avenue and geary boulevard. the shoplifting happens so often shoppers say they are very frustrated. >> sometimes i have stopped people myself and it frustrates me to see the neighborhood fall apart. to have to ask somebody to unlock things. reggie: 20% in san francisco compared to pre-pandemic levels. a police officer who did not want to be on camera says he detained eight people on monday. >> people entering the story and taking products. if they cross the threshold they can be put under arrest.

kumasi: thank you, amanda. a third bay area highway shooting reported in five days. the i-team received data showing 30 bay area shootings in the first 4.5 months of 2023, 19 of them in alameda county. gloria is in the newsroom with what we know about the allegation and what need to be done to prevent the shootings. gloria coleman the recent incidents have some wondering if highway cameras could help with the investigations. this scene unfolded in oakland on tuesday afternoon. california highway patrol officers closed off eastbound lanes affidavit showed up at the hospital with a gunshot wound, reporting it happened a long 980. we don't know the extent of that person's injuries right now but it arcs the third bay area highway shooting in five days. friday evening and eight-year-old was left in grave

reggie: our friend, the surfboard biting sea otter in santa cruz is a free otter this morning. we will see how long that lasts. fish and wildlife was once again trying to capture the otter, who has gone viral. they had no luck. people who came to see her are split on what should happen. >> we cannot take a species out of its natural environment. you have to investigate why it's happening but we already know why. i am protesting its capture.

>> personally i think they do need to capture her. it is really important for her safety to know what is going on with her health. animal care facility and released into the wild more than one year before the interactions with people started happening. the department of fish and wildlife said that it could take days or weeks to successfully capture her, study her behavior and rehome her into a zoo or an aquarium. kumasi: she already been through that. reggie: this is where she lives. ok. kumasi: his dog are resting easy this morning after being lost at sea for three months. timothy lindsay shattuck and his dog were rescued by a mexican tune about. 1200 miles from land and in international waters. the crew gave them food, water, and international attention.

he is help late and grateful for the doggy found in mexico. >> i tried to find a home for her three times and she kept following me to the water. i'm just grateful that she's alive. she's a lot braver than i am. [laughter] kumasi: he said they survived off of ra -- raw fish and rainwater after a storm damaged his catamaran and wiped out his electronics. they were originally headed towards french polynesia from mexico. reggie: it is really hot in arizona. phoenix is expected to hit 20 days in a row where the temperature is over 110 degrees. the second day in a row where the city broke a temperature record. the previous record of 18 straight days of 110 degree weather was set in 1974 and was broken yesterday. the city also broke a temperature -- a low record temperature.

the low was 94 degrees. yesterday was also the ninth straight day that phoenix had a low temperature over 98 degrees that set a record. drew: break that record again. 98 degrees right now. if it stays at 98 or above, that would be the record warmest overnight low they have ever seen. it's still hot in arizona and there is more heat on the way. for us in land there is cooler weather with an onshore flow making its way in land, creating comfortable temperatures this morning. it's a comfortable afternoon. similar to yesterday. 70's and 80's away from the coast. kumasi: call on speed camera, a proposed bill that would ticket drivers going faster than the speed limit. reggie: and the move by supervisors to help small businesses stay afloat. kumasi: taking a live look outside.
