works to resolve the situation. it has created a backup not only nears a bridge but in san francisco as well as people try to find different ways to get to the east bay. let's get to lena howland who is on the scene. she caught up with frustrated drivers, i can imagine you were cut up and all that gridlock. -- caught up in all that gridlock. reporter: this bridge has been shut down for 10 hours and counting. those are the eastbound lanes of the bridge. chp officers have been driving around this area next to the roadblock using their loudspeakers, urging drivers to leave. they say there's no point in waiting as there no estimated time of reopening the bridge. this has caused a bit of a traffic nightmare for drivers across most of the bay area. >> there will be no way up there anytime soon. find another way home. reporter: a potential all-night

closure. reporter: shut down 1:00 in the afternoon because of someone experiencing a mental health crisis on the bridge. officers have been in negotiations with the person ever since. leaving drivers in gridlock. >> this is ridiculous. i've never heard, it's unbelievable. it's unbelievable why we have to sit this long. people are just getting off work. they can't get home. reporter: is her main route home to hercules with two kids in the backseat. we found her waiting in her car for more than four hours near the roadblock. >> i have to get up in the morning to go back to work. this is sad. reporter: aerial view's show hundreds of drivers stuck on the

bridge after the closure, causing a ripple effect throughout the bay area including in san francisco and novato. >> i know people that work around here. some people went through san francisco and they are still stuck in san francisco. >> for i want to see my baby girl. i want to see my wife. i'm hungry. reporter: others are making the best of it despite home being just four hours away on the other side of the break. >> i went to get some food. what can you do? calm down. if you have to go around, you have to go around. reporter: chp again is encouraging drivers to not wait this out and to find another way

around the bridge. they also say to check 51 one.org for the best routes around this. lena howland, abc7news. dion: thank you. eastbound interstate 80 is closed between highway four in hercules and crockett. the detours are highlighted. you can see green on the map. this stretch is closed for construction. caltrans sales it will be worth it in the long run. >> because we are global -- closing this, we will be able to reinforce concrete paving. we will have a nice smooth ride for motorists and we will get a longer life. we are looking at 40 years of life. dion: it will reopen no later than 5:00 monday. two more closures are planned for august and then caltrans will begin to work on the westbound side. certainly a hot friday for parts of the bay area and that was enough to trigger an advisory.

we will see smoke in the other parts of the atmosphere. a stunning view of san francisco. air quality. spare the air alert extended through tomorrow. it does turn good on sunday. i will let you know about those changes on sunday, coming up here get dion: we love to see that green. one man is dead tonight following a shooting in san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood. it happened just after 6:00 near golden gate avenue. when officers arrived, they found the victim on the sidewalk. they spoke to witnesses who saw the suspect run from the scene. one of two boaters is still missing tonight after going overboard in the san joaquin river near the antioch bridge. the second boater dived into the water in an attempt to save the other one. the coast guard arrived with a helicopter and a rescue boat, recovering the second boater who is in good condition. a drone from contra costa fire

was launch this afternoon. that search is ongoing. new development in antioch were a judge heard motions in a case involving police officers linked to the racist texting scandal. that was to determine if the -- to determine if the officers violated california's new racial justice act. the case centers around antioch police officers and black men who were charged in a gang-related shooting two years ago. the judge will allow the officers to testify with their lawyers present despite attempts to block their testimony by the prosecution. the next hearing is in martinez on august 25. the bike lane on valencia street is still under constructiout it's already being used. it currently runs from 15th to 23rd street and mixed reviews are coming from commuters, putting into question how effective the project is. the lanes run down the center of the street in between car traffic.

cyclists say the lane protection is minimal as many of the plastic posts have been destroyed within a week of being installed. cars have been spotted going between barriers to turn left or you turn. >> there's another part of valencia street that has a curbside protected by claim that is proven to be exponentially safer. >> i just entered it for the first time ever and i think it's pretty cool. dion: the bikeway has been under construction for nearly two months and several accidents have been reported. this is a pilot project so the sfmta has a year to evaluate the functionality and design. >> dion: a large and vocal protest took place outside a hotel in millbrae. san mateo county has submitted an application to buy the hotel and use it to house the homeless.

the project would be part of the state's home key program that allows for this type of conversion. tonight, we remember the man and legendary singer from new york who left his heart in san francisco. tony bennett. he died today at the age of 96, two weeks short of his birthday. he released more than 70 albums and collected 19 grammies. cornell barnard shows us how san francisco is paying tribute. >> ♪ i left my reporter: alone violinist played that iconic song outside the fairmont hotel in memory of tony bennett, a place where his bronze statue stands. >> he first sang i left my heart in san francisco in our venetian room in 1961. our prayers are with his family. reporter: he passed away at age 96 after a long battle with alzheimer's disease. his fans leaving flowers and

paying their respects. >> it's a sad moment for all of us. you accept -- expect some people to live forever but none of us do. reporter: what is your favorite tony bennett song? >> the one for the city. ♪ reporter: this impromptu sing-along across parts of the city. >> ♪ when i come home to you san francisco ♪ reporter: the grammy winner leaves behind a long legacy of music, artistry, and philanthropy. he was born a new yorker but became the unofficial ambassador of the city by the bay. >> he was a special person and he loved the city. his death reminds us that we here on this earth for a short time and we have to make sure we make it count. >> ♪ how do you keep the music

playing ♪ reporter: he rose to fame in the 1950's and enjoyed a career resurgence. >> the 60 years between us, but when we sing there's no distance. reporter: a supervisor led the effort in 2015 to name a section of mason street tony bennett way. >> he was in it for the yard. it was not about himself. when i met him, he was truly a transcendent, genuine person. he loved san francisco. he adored this town. reporter: his enduring love song forever etched on our minds. >> ♪ golden sun me ♪ reporter: called tony bennett the greatest pop singer in the world. bennett is survived by his wife susan, to sons, and two

taylor swift era store comes to levi's stadium next week. diehard fans are in an uproar over new rules and regulations. there will be no tailgating or outside the stadium access for people without a ticket. >> a lot of fans are gathering outside, hoping that they could hear her music or see a scream. i had the plan to go so i'm bummed to hear that santa clara is saying now. dion: 20,000 ticketed -- on ticketed fans showed up in philadelphia earlier in the tour and life he stadium is trying to make sure that doesn't happen here. levi banned the popular friendship bracelets at first but announced friday that they would indeed allow them after all. in berkeley, rialto cinemas elmwood was able to reopen just-in-time today for the debut of oppenheimer. the building was hit by a car and read -- red tagged wednesday afternoon.

the road which continues into highway 120 will be open to vehicles by 8:00 tomorrow though camping is limited. the 46 mile road is usually open by this time of the year but there is still plenty of snow up there and repairs to come. radio towers, satellite this is come and down power lines also must be fixed. when it comes to the weather, hard to believe places like that still dealing with cold weather as we in the bay area are dealing with extreme heat. sandhya: that dangerous heat across much of the southwestern u.s. continues. locally, the hot weather will continue as well. let's talk about the weekend heat. it will be sizzling and lint. heat increases once again for our inland communities. fire danger will be elevated. some safety reminders for the weekend. never leave kids or pet inside vehicles. it gets hotter inside the car.

stay hydrated and in the shade. reduce your time outdoors. triple digit sizzle. high pressure from the southwest shifted westward and that will bring us the heat once again. it will raise the fire danger so we are looking at moderate to high heat risk and fire risk as well for our inland communities. be aware of that, especially if you have outdoor activities this weekend. statewide, heat advisory for the bay area and much of northern and central california. we have an excessive heat warning from any parts of the inland communities of central and southern california. for pressure system approaches and moves towards the pacific northwest, it will cause high pressure to shift east which means they heat eases and the air quality improves. it will turn good for a change
