good morning to you. it is saturday, july 22. i am gloria rodriguez. you will have more on our top story in a moment, but first we are going to start with a look at your weather. here is shayla girardin. shay the day. some cooler temperatures as you are heading out the door. 50's and 60's out there. still seeing some foggy conditions, a little bit of that marine layer. we do still have that dense fog advisory along the coast. it is going to be sticking around through 10:00 a.m., for the most part looking pretty good. the only area we are still seeing limited visibility is half moon bay. it is going to be a hot one out there. we are talking about those triple digits making a return once again. the bay, though, nice and cool. he will break down that seven-day forecast, when and where we are going to see that he. for now i will toss it back to you. gloria: happening right now in

san rafael, all lanes of the eastbound richmond-san rafael bridge remain closed as the chp works to resolve a situation with a man having a mental health crisis. you just saw a live look right there. closure began before 1:00 p.m. friday, with reports of the man running on the bridge. there were major backups from san rafael to san francisco as people searched for alternate ways to get to the east bay. lena howland caught up with some frustrated drivers. >> there is going to be no way up there anytime soon. find another way home. >> unwelcome news of a potential all-night closure to those who had been waiting to cross found lanes of the richmond-san rafael bridge for hours. eastbound ends of the bridge shut down around 1:00 in the afternoon because of someone experiencing a mental health crisis on the bridge. chp officers have been in negotiations with the person ever since, leaving drivers in gridlock. >> this is ridiculous.

it's unbelievable. it is unbelievable while we have to sit this long when people are getting off of work. and they can't get home. lena: bridge is her main route home to hercules, with two kids in the backseat. he found her waiting for more than four hours near the roadblock. >> and i have to get up in the morning to go back to work. this is sad. lena: aerial view's show hundreds of drivers stuck on the bridge and shortly after the closure, causing a ripple effect throughout the bay area, including in san francisco and nevada. >> i know people who work around their -- around here. some people are still in san francisco. if you went through novato, you are still stuck in nevada. >> for me it is bad, because i

want to see my baby girl. i want to see my wife. i'm hungry. lena: those stuck near the roadblock i'm making the best of it, despite home being four hours away on the other side of the break. >> some people were starving so i went to the store and tried to get some food. what can you do? just come down if you have to go around, go around. gloria: to another traffic closure happening right now. eastbound interstate 80 is closed between highway watcher anddetours are hig on that map right there. this stretch of roadway is closed for construction. caltrans says while it may be an inconvenience, it will be worth it in the long run. >> because we are closing this we are going to be able to do continuously-reinforced concrete paving.

over the entire three miles we will have a smooth ride, and get a longer life. we are looking at possibly 40 years of life. gloria: the roadway will reopen no later than 5:00 a.m. on monday. it is the first of three closures for this stretch of road. two others are planned for august after that caltrans will begin to work on the westbound side of the freeway. a man is dead this morning following a shooting in san francisco's tenderloin neighborhood. so far, no arrests. the man was shot just after six :00 p.m. yesterday near golden gate hyde street. officers say they spoke to witnesses, who saw the suspect run from the scene. a search is ongoing for a boater who fell into the san joaquin river. rescuers were called to the area around the antioch bridge after the person went overboard and a second boater jumped into the water to save them. using a helicopter and rescue boat the coast guard saved the second boater.

they are in good condition. contra costa firefighters are also using a drone to help search for the other person. new developments in antioch, where a judge heard motions in a case involving police officers linked to the racist texting scandal. the hearing was to determine if the officers violated california's new racial justice act by trading racist texts. the case centers around antioch police officers and four black men who were charged in a -related shooting two years ago. the judge will allow the officers to testify with their lawyers present, despite attempts to block their testimony by the prosecution. the next hearing is in martinez on august 25. mixed reviews about one of the city's newest bike lanes leading to questions about the effectiveness t project. the bike lan is on valencia street in san francisco. it runs from 15th through 23rd street, and it is still under

construction. but it is already being used. the lanes run down the center of the street and between traffic, and cyclists say the lane protection is minimal, with many of the plastic posts destroyed within a week of being installed. cars have been spotted going between barriers to turn left or u-turn. >> there is another part of valencia street that has a curb-protected by claim that has proven to be exponentially safer. >> i just entered it for the first time ever and i think it is pretty cool it is down the middle. gloria: the bike lane has been under construction for nearly two months and several accidents have been reported. this is a pilot project. the sfmta has a year to evaluate how functional it is, and also the design. >> night fight for mill mill grade -- millbrae! gloria: on the peninsula, a

vocal protest took place friday outside a la quinta hotel in millbrae. the county has submitted an application to buy the hotel and house the homeless. it would be part of the state's home key program. we are remembering the man and legendary singer from new york who left his heart in san francisco. the iconic tony bennett. he died yesterday at the age of 96, just two weeks short of his birthday. bennett released more than 70 albums and collected 19 grammies. cornell barnard shows us how santa cisco is paying tribute. >> ♪ i left my >> a lone violinist played that in memory of tony bennett, a place where his eight foot tall bronze statue stands in front.

gloria: the women's world cup officially kicked off down under early friday morning, with cohost new zealand springing a massive upset. the two-time defending champion u.s. women's team took to the pitch last night. a large crowd up showed up in san jose to root them on. abc 7 news southbay reporter lauren martinez tells us about the strong connection between the team and the bay area. lauren: the u.s. national soccer team kick started there world cup with a win, 3-0. hundreds attended a watch party hosted by the san jose earthquakes. >> the soccer community is so big here in the south bay. it is great to support women's sports. lauren: a third of the soccer team have ties to the bay area. mostly the southbay. stanford's sophia smith not only

u.s. plays the netherlands. bay fc, the newest professional women sports team, announced paypal part will be there stadium starting next week -- next year. lauren martinez, abc 7 news. gloria: it is being billed by some as the concert event of the generation. the taylor swift tour comes to levi's stadium next week. fans are in an uproar over new rules and regulations. there will be no tailgating or outside stadium access for swifties without a ticket. >> for the span of her tour a lot of her fans are gathering outside i'm hoping that they could hear her music or see a screen. i had a plan to go, so i am bummed to hear the park is saying no, you can't do that. lauren: 20,000 on ticketed fans showed up in philadelphia earlier in the two are, and levi's stadium is trying to make sure that does not happen here. levi's also banned friendship

race looks at first, then announced friday they would allow them after all. i'm sure the fans are happy about that. in berkeley rialto cinema's elmwood was able to reopen in time for the debut of "oppenheimer." the building was hit by a car and red tagged. the driver lost control on wednesday afternoon after a small dog jumped toward the car's petals. one was heard and an assessment later found no structural problems. theater management says cosmetic repairs are still in progress. theater wanted to show this movie because of oppenheimer's ties to berkeley. tickets are available for more showings of the film. in yosemite in one of the park's main roads will finally reopen today after heavy damage from the winter storms. tioga road, which continues into highway 120, will be open to vehicles by 8:00 a.m. today, but camping is limited. 46 mile road is usually open by

this time in the year, but there is still plenty of snow up there, and repairs to come. radio towers, satellite dishes, damaged buildings, and downed power lines must be fixed. let's get a check of that forecast now. shayla girardin is tracking the forecast. is it going to be hot again today? shayla: yes. we are talking about heat advisory is once again. nice and calm to start the morning, but as you head inland, you are going to be feeling that heat by this afternoon. if you want to beat the heat the coast is definitely the place to be. we are also tracking some fog along the beaches to start off the morning. that is going to burn off around 10:00 a.m. you know the drill. we are still talking about heat alerts all across the state of california. we are really feeling that as you head into the afternoon. you can see the pinks and oranges on your screen. it is inland that is going to continue to notice this heat. fresno, bakersfield, even bishop well into the triple digits.

san francisco, you are beating the heat this morning, only making it to the 70's. l.a. also coming in on the cool side. but we are going to be feeling those heat advisories. all of the pink are areas above that 90 degree mark. concorde, napa, all of you are continuing to see warmer conditions. look at some areas. fairfield, antioch well into those triple digits. but along the coast, nice and cool. going to feel that heat as much by the coast, but inland it is toasty. tomorrow we start a cooldown. it is still on the warmer site tomorrow, but each day you are going to notice a two degrees drop. by mid to end the week it is going to be cooler and comfortable for us. starting out with foggy skies. that will keep us cooler over the next couple of hours. as that starts to burn off you will start to feel that he billed in. by around 4:00 p.m., that is when temperatures spike. along the coast, still some

cloud cover. much more comfortable as well. he was a look at those highs for today. it is going to be a warm one, especially inland. that is where we are talking about those heat advisory is in effect. but along the coast, nice and comfortable. half moon bay coming in in the 60's. even santa cruz, you are in those upper 70's. you know the drill. cozy at the coast, but as you head inland is going to be a hot one. that gradual cooldown we were talking about, triple digits for you inland. we are talking about the 90's over the next couple of days, but look at that cooldown that comes our way by midweek. wednesday is when we start to see the 80's return. it is going to be breezier as well. for the bay, we have the 80's today, dropping to the 70's by midweek thursday and friday. we are talking about 72 degrees, and along the coast 60's for today. really flirting with those upper 50's throughout the week. hopper us out there today, but

michael: jones sometimes fly over cj's oakley house. he never thought much of it until now. >> apparently they have pictures and noticed clutter. michael: tj was shocked when he got this notice from his long time home insurance carrier. >> set up for nonrenewal. they're going to be terminating our policy. michael: his house is not in a fire zone and he has never filed a single claim. instead, the notice said csa a found clutter, hazardous waste, tire, and a dilapidated car in his yard. how could they make such a claim? no one had been by to ask -- to inspect the house. >> they said, no, we sent over a drum. oh, they have a drum they sent over my property, i don't know flew into my yard. michael: they said we have a drone, we have seen your property, that is why we denied you? >> correct. michael: csaa would not let him see the photos or give him a

chance to clear his yard. >> at this point is too late. michael: the tsa leadership -- later told cj it did not use a drone. it said it reviewed aerial images. the company would not show those images to cj or 7 on your side. we flew our own drone to show how it looks from up there. >> it is not dangerous. it is not neglected. we are using these things. michael: cj took me on a tour and admits the yard is cluttered, but he is a do-it-yourself guy. >> this is my original, my first car he got. michael: he is restoring his 1966 chevy. >> is pretty good for going through my teenage years. [laughter] michael: he has installed his own solar panels, and he changes his own tires. he says it is a lifestyle, not a hazard. >> we were found guilty and punished and we had no idea, warning, no opportunity to mitigate the situation.

digits if you are inland today. a little bit cooler for the bay and coast. we'll talk about where we are seeing all of those heat advisories, plus how long it is going to last. that is coming up, but for now i will toss it back to you. gloria: thank you, shayla. bella pig news on the dangerous heat taking hold across the country. it is not just how high the temperatures are expected to get, but how long the extreme heat is sticking around. relentless triple digit temperatures have been felt in many places for weeks now. the heat is also fueling storms. line the meuse has the latest. >> millions of americans from coast-to-coast under heat alerts , temperatures hitting triple digits across much of the west and south as the dangerous conditions remain. in texas near the gulf coast, a rush to break a windshield in a frantic effort to free a baby locked inside a car. children's body temperatures can

rise five times faster than adults. ems evaluated the baby, and they are ok. phoenix, arizona hitting 119 on thursday. it has been more than 110 degrees there for three weeks straight, breaking a record. >> it seems like it just gets hotter and hotter every year. >> the heat not just hot -- hot on humans. experts recommend staying in air-conditioning and out of the sun in this weather. but that is not an option for some people who have to work outdoors, like these construction workers in miami. the heat not only in the air, but the water. water temperatures in the gulf and atlantic are climbing into the 90's off the florida coast. that is four to seven degrees higher than average. >> it is warm. it is over 90 degrees. it gives us reason for pause for what may come for the rest of the summer. michael: researchers at florida international university one those temperatures could harm marine life and provide fuel for

hurricanes. >> there is concern that with warmer temperatures you may see stronger storms or more for storms. >> amid the heat, the threat of severe storms. torrential rain falling in atlanta friday night, pouring down, causing flash flooding in some areas. in further north in boston, a game between the red sox and mets postponed due to storms. heavy rain turning staircases at fenway park into waterfalls. abc news, new york. gloria: a date has been set to start the classified documents trial against former president donald trump. a federal judge, a trump appointee, picked may 20 to begin the trial. it is months after the department of justice had requested, but still well before next year's presidential election. rump's legal team called it a setback for the prosecution. the trial will be in a

heavily-republican area of florida. legal experts say that will make it difficult to pick an impartial jury. >> it is important for the prosecution not to have someone who just believes in donald trump, period, regardless of the facts. the facts as we know publicly are pretty strong for the government. michael: settled a lawsuit accusing the trump organization of failing to cover millions in legal bills. the settlement comes three days after -- three days before the trial was set to begin. contra costa county first responders remembered two of their own who died fighting a house fire. the flag was lowered staff at the contra costa county fire district memorial garden yesterday. to honor captain matt burton and fire engineer scott desmond. we were searching for residents inside a san pablo house in july 2007 when they were lost to the heat and smoke. they both died, along with two

residents. their sacrifices remembered every year. >> and may each small active service we do we a living memorial to matt, to scott, and to all of our fallen firefighters. gloria: captain burton and engineer desmond where the first contra costa county fire district firefighters to be killed in the line of duty. we are working to build a better bay area, and that means a safer bay area. but new data shows san francisco's vision zero program to eliminate traffic deaths is far from its goal. the road safety plan was launched in 2014, and it aimed to end the traffic fatalities by 2024. abc 7 news reporter suzanne phan has a look at the progress that has been made. >> i have definitely had a few close calls while i am running. >> had lived in san francisco for three years, and i always try to be careful crossing the street. >> i think it is people doing

unprotected left hand turns. suzanne: rather they are running, walking, or biking, a lot of people say they have had close calls with drivers. vision zero sf is the city's plan to end the traffic deaths by 2024. this week authorities say they are concerned. but it is hard for me to accept we are not going to reach zero by 2024. suzanne: the latest data shows mixed progress. traffic fatalities are up. 2022 was the deadliest year since the initiative launched in 2014. >> i think it is a sobering reality of our city and a reminder that our streets are not as safe as they need to be for people to get around without using a car. suzanne: san francisco is not the only city struggling with traffic fatalities. this chart shows san jose is close to the same level it was started vision zero in 2015. that is partly because fewer people were on the road during the pandemic, but some say a lot

more work needs to be done to protect pedestrians. >> it requires the city and sfmta to redesign our streets. suzanne: sustainable transportation advocate luke fortner heimer says the city needs to install more protections for pedestrians and cyclists, like this protected by claim. rafael mandelman believes a key factor is to increase traffic enforcement. as we approach the 24th target date, many bicyclists say they appreciate the effort. >> it's a great vision. i think we need to strive for that. i don't know if we will make it, but we have to get close. suzanne: suzanne phan, abc 7 news. gloria: this morning the world's largest cosco could be coming to california. according to the chronicle, the biggest wholesale retailer will be in fresno if the proposal is approved. the warehouse is expected to be over 240,000 square feet. that is equivalent to four

football fields. it will include a delivery distribution center, a 32-pump gas station, also a drive through car wash. that is pretty cool. the plan is under a 45-day review period before the final environmental review is complete. a san jose school district, facing declining enrollment, converted one of its schools into a first of its kind early learning center. abc 7 news got a tour of the cesar chavez early learning center. it will offer free or reduced cost infant, toddler, and preschool care for low-income families. the site will also offer social services. superintendent of the school district says the learning program will be a very unique. >> the center will provide the first dual immersion spanish-language opportunity for children zero to three in the bay area. gloria: the program will be run

getting ready for your weekend. let's get a check of your forecast with shayla girardin. shayla: good morning. nice and cool for us to start the day, but that he is going to move in by this afternoon. especially feeling that heat inland. the coast, not so much. it is going to be cool and comfortable. the beach is the place to be. we are also tracking some areas of dense fog this morning. still have that fog advisory through 10:00 a.m. musso be prepared if you are heading out the door along the coast. that spare the air alert is still in effect today. all of this heat we are talking about air quality not being as good in some areas. if you are sensitive to this, keep this in mind as you are heading out the door. he was a look at these heat advisories. most areas feeling the heat by this afternoon as you head inland. that is where you're going to notice those temperatures spike. some areas reaching triple digits. along the coast, no advisories for you.
