for dion: faith-based groups take a stand on the housing crisis. the news at 5:00 starts right now. >> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. dion: look like this. a progress check on a massive page -- paving project which caltrans says will be worth the detour. good evening and think you for joining us. we start now with developing news that roadwork is shut down a freeway for a total of 56 hours. eastbound interstate 80 is shut down between highway four and hercules. several detours are in place, you can see them in green there, that is the stretch of road that is close. 5:00 tomorrow morning.pen by cornell barnard got perspectives and a progress report on the work. >> it's a lot. but it has to be done.

what are you going to do? >> this woman from hercules is trying to avoid driving on i-80 where closures happen. >> i saw the signs and people texting me into telling me about it. i'm stuck choice. >> caltrans blues -- crews have been replacing three miles of pavement with reinforced concrete. the new roadway is seamless with no joints. >> because there is no joints it will last longer. they're looking at possibly a 40 year lifespan on the work we are doing. >> the closure started friday night and i happening between highway four and hercules and cummings skyway in crockett. detours are highlighted here in green. some of those detours were slow going. drivers trying to keep their cool. the ramirez family from sacramento missed the warning signs. >> we were prepared. >> we ended up spending the

night because i have a little baby, you can hear him starting to fuss. it wasn't worth it. >> caltrans says that many drivers avoided the area. >> basically the traffic has gone down over 50% which allowed us to really be successful with the job. >> there is more repaving to come, and caltrans says this lane will be paved the weekend of august 4, and this lane will be repaved august 18. then they plan a four-day closure over the labor day weekend to break -- repaint westbound lanes, including the carquinez bridge. >> we take seven nights cl down to four weekends. >> i-80 is on schedule to reopen early monday morning. in contra costa county, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. dion: housing is an issue that we focus on as part of our commitment to building a better bay area.

a group called 50 men she met with state legislators to call attention to the area housing crisis. the group of 22 santa clara churches asked lawmakers what is being done to support on house folks and undocumented communities. >> one of the big challenges, not just with low income, it is easier to deal with undocumented people, and we have fought hard to make sure that nobody keeps a registry of who is documented and undocumented. dion: the groups are pushing for the passage of a measure -- pair of measures which would create statewide tenant protections and help religious institutions create a formal housing on their property. nancy pelosi said today that house speaker kevin mccarthy is playing politics with the idea of expunging former president donald trump's two impeachments. >> this is about being afraid, as i have said before.

donald trump is a puppeteer. what does he do all the time? he shines a light on the strings. >> mccarthy said in a call with trump that he backed the idea of expunging the former presidents impeachments and would bring it up to the conference to get support. the california republican prompted outrage from trump allies last month when he said in an interview that he thinks the former president can win in 2024, but did not know if you was the strongest candidate. cnn reports that mccarthy called trump and apologized, claiming he misspoke. parts of the bay area sweated through this weekend, and some serious heat has several states, including utah, nevada and arizona in its grip. jaclyn lee tells us that a long stretch of record-breaking heat is expected to continue. >> millions of americans across the south and southwest continue to see record-breaking streaks of high temperatures. phoenix has already had 23

consecutive days where temperatures have reached at least 110 degrees. those high temperatures likely to continue through the week. the city sees no measurable rainfall for four months. las vegas, fresno and salt lake city under excessive heat warnings and a knife consecutive day of over 150 degrees in palm springs. >> we see firefighters attended two more heat related incidents and more incidents at our hospital. >> el paso has seen temperatures at or above 100 degrees for 37 days. the index in miami has climbed for 43 state days. -- straight days. >> this was an area unseasonably cool just a week ago. soft amateurs in the 60's and 70's, but near fargo, 100 degrees. >> washington's governor has been one of the loudest voices on addressing climate changes. >> the fuse has been burning for decades and now the climate change bomb has gone off.

this is a solvable problem. but we need to stop using fossil fuels. that is the only solution to this massive assault on humanity. >> in a separate appearance, republican congressman michael mccaul agreed that the warming climate is concerned, but that china is the number one in midair and must do its fair share. jaclyn lee, abc news new york. dion: san francisco police are investigating an unbelievable car crash caught on camera saturday night. check this out. you can see the car go through a barrier and note -- nosedived down a large stairway onto a sidewalk. this happened in an area of 19th and sanchez street's. there were no injuries despite the crash and witnesses help some of the people out of the car. the footage shows everybody in the car leave the scene before police arrived. early morning sideshows in oakland and after police arrived. -- ended after police arrived.

this was the scene at 4:00 this morning at the intersection of hagan berger road and coliseum way. multiple cars and doughnuts and taking turns in the middle of the intersection. it left -- lasted 15-20 minutes before police broke up the crowd. the oakland police department said that they are devoting more resources to monitor and stop sideshows like these. in the north bay, the tap water in the town of yountville is ok to use without boiling. you may be member of thursday, e. coli was discovered in the water supply and a boil water notice was issued. last night, officials say that three consecutive follow-up tests were negative and the state water resource control board approved listing -- lifting that advisory. just ahead, twitters blue bird logo may have taken its final flight. the latest big change ceo elon musk says is coming for the company. and crossing the finish line.

have been removed. her photo was used on the account after her mother posted about how the two wanted to go to one of the upcoming shows at levi's stadium. police told them that it is not identity -- identity theft and it is unclear who removed those phony twitter posts. speaking of twitter, the blue bird logo could be going away in the next few hours. elon musk tweeted that he plans to change the logo of twitter to an ex. -- x. x.com will take you and this will be the latest change since elon musk bought the company last year. an interim logo will go live today, and industry experts say it is not surprising, given his history with the letter x his sprocket company known as the space x, model x teslas, and a startup that turned into paypal called x.com.

race organizers say that 29,000 runners took part in today's san francisco marathon. a woman from france first overall, and the first woman to finish was andrea zimmerman, and the first to finish in the nondairy -- binary -- non-binary category was a person from theft is good. former inmates at san quentin also raised with a purpose. >> you want to be better and have that mindset of rehabilitating and better hearing yourself and processing everything. -- bettering yourself and processing every thing. there is hope and you just have to keep going and don't stop. >> the 26 mile route was a scenic tour through the city along the bay through the presidio across the golden gate bridge, back down through golden gate park and finishing next to the bay bridge. congratulations to everybody who participated. just ahead, an ocean voyage of discovery lodged in san francisco bay this weekend. this is the first time on a boat

dion: a tall ship took a group of students on a very special trip around the bay. the deaf and hard of hearing students were in san francisco to learn to say. they are all from the utah school for the deaf and went out with the group call of the sea. for some it is their first time on a boat and they learned to steer and navigate and handle sales, all activities available in american sign language. crew members also learned from -- some silent which themselves.

>> i really love to see the kids learn and grow and become confident in the skills that they are learning, and to really leave their phone and technology behind and experience the world around us. dion: sometimes just getting outside is the best thing. a spokesperson says that the crew wants to make the maritime world accessible to all. they are doing that by making their emergency procedures more visual and romantic signs in the cruise sailing routines. the second annual lion dance festival returned to san francisco's chinatown to celebrate culture and community. it has been a weekend full of activities with local vendors and shopping. there have been dance performances and even martial arts instructions. ♪ dion: hundreds came out to watch at portsmouth square. the festival organizer says this

in oakland, 32 degrees in mountain view, anyone degrees in san jose, and 61 degrees in half moon bay. beautiful view from emeryville, with just enough clouds to get this guy some texture, makes it look like a painting. page one degrees at santa rosa and concorde at 92 degrees, napa at 34 degrees, and here is the view from the exploratory camera looking towards the bay bridge and these are the forecast headlines. in mix of high and low clouds tonight, much like what we have right now, patchy morning drizzle is also a possibility. seasonably warm in the tomorrow and tuesday, cooler areawide beginning wednesday. here's the forecast and mission starting at 7:00 p.m., notice high clouds increasing during the overnight hours as well as a little bank of low clouds pushing up towards the close line and spotty drizzle mainly near the bay, so morning commuters may encounter a spot or two on the roadways.

overnight lows in the mid-upper 50's tonight, cooler than last night except in places like antioch with a low of six to four degrees. heist tomorrow at 61 degrees in half moon bay, 67 degrees in san francisco, mid-70's around the bay shoreline and the warmest in the locations will only be in the low 90's, 91 degrees in concord, hovering around 92 elsewhere. here is the accuweather 7-day forecast. on tuesday, we may say temperatures increase in -- seek damages increase a couple degrees, not much on monday and tuesday, mild-woman tuesday. breezy and much cooler on wednesday, continues to get cooler on thursday and friday, high damages inland from the middle of the week to friday barely reaching into the mid 80's, which is refreshing compared to triple digits that we had last couple of days. just a great ahead. dion: we really can't complain
