takes a stand on the housing crisis. abcs's -- abc7news at 6:00 starts right now. >> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. dion: look like this. a progress check on a massive paving project that caltrans says will be worth the long detour drivers now face in the east bay. thank you for joining us. we begin with developing news that roadwork is expected to shut down the freeway for a total of 56 hours. stbound interstate 80 is closed between highway four and hercules and cummings skyway and crockett. several detosre in place, you can see them in green. note theed on the map, that is the stretch that is closed. it is scheduled to reopen by 5:00 tomorrow morning.abc7news l barnard got a driver's perspective and a progress report on the work. >> it is a lot. but it has to be done.

so what are you going to do? >> cheryl is trying to avoid driving on i-80 this weekend where our closure is happening. >> i have had people text me and tell me about it. i'm stuck, i don't have a choice. replacing three miles of pavement on eastbound 80 with reinforced concrete. officials say that the new roadway is seamless with no joints. >> because there is no joints it will last longer. we are looking at possibly a 40 year life out of the work we are doing. cornell: the closures started fray night between highway four and hercules and cummings skyway and crockett. detours around the roadwork are highlighted here in green. some of those detours were slow going. drivers trying to keep their cool. the ramirez family from sacramento missed the warning signs. >> we would have been prepared.

>> we ended up spending the night because of the closure because i have a little baby, you can hear fuss. it wasn't worth it. >> caltrans says that many drivers avoided the area. the traffic has gone down over 50%. that allowed us to really be successful on this job. >> more repaving is to come, and this lane will be repaved august 4. this will be repaved the week of august 18. a four-day closure is planned over the labor day weekend to repaved westbound lanes, including the carquinez bridge. >> by doing this work we take 106 nights of closures down to four weekends. >> as for this project, i-80 is on schedule to reopen early monday morning. in contra costa county, cornell barnard, abc7news. dion: housing is an issue we focus on as part of our commitment to helping to build a better bay area.

today, a group called faith the committee met with state legislators -- legislators to which the concerns on the housing crisis. they asked the legislators to do more to get shelter for on house and not undocumented in visual spirit -- and undock committed individuals. >> we have been dealing with undocumented people to make sure that nobody keeps a registry of who is the document and undock committed. dion: state lawmakers are close to passing a bill which will create statewide tenants protections and another which will provide religious institutions with pathways to create affordable housing on the property. congresswoman nancy pelosi said today that kevin mccarthy is playing politics with the idea of expunging former president donald trump's two impeachments. pelosi: this is about being afraid. as i have said before, donald trump is the puppeteer.

and what does he do all the time? shine a light on the strings. these people are pathetic. >> mccarthy said in a call with trump that he backed the idea of expunging the former presidents impeachments and would bring it up at a conference to gauge support. the california republican prompted outrage from trump allies last month when he said in an interview that he thinks the former president can win in 2024 but did not know if he was the strongest candidate. cnn reports that mccarthy called trump and apologized, claiming that he was spoke. parts of the bay area sprinted through this weekend and some serious heat has several states, including utah, nevada and arizona in its groups. jaclyn lee tells us a long stretch of record-breaking heat is expected to continue. >> millions of americans across the south and southwest continue to see record-breaking streaks of high temperatures. phoenix has already had 23 consecutive days where temperatures have reached at least 110 degrees.
