apped in san francisco on th sanchez stairs near 19th , not farrom the castro police have been aiming to find the people who were in the car. abc 7 news reporter j.r. stone has more details from a man who helped save the people who then run away. j.r.: do not blink, because the people you see here got out of this upside down car in san francisco that had just wrapped off this cliff and left, minutes before police arrived and minutes after police surveillance video showed this. >> the screeching tires and we were airborne. i heard a thud, and that is when they were bouncing through the overgrowth and hit the trees. then it landed and it was silent. j.r.: this is the area where the vehicle ramped off the hillside. these guardrails pulled back. >> when i ran up to the car, you

could hear muffled yelling from inside the car, so i yanked on the door. hopefully it -- thankfully it was not stuck at all. j.r.: this man working on his own car outside helped five people get out, but quickly noticed things he did not expect to see or hear. >> one phrase that i remember was, we have three minutes, we need to run. >> a bunch of stuff came out of the car. i saw two tasers and the cops came to the scene and found the gun. j.r.: police say they have been unable to locate those inside the car, but have not said if they committed any crimes outside leaving the scene. a man who showed up after the accident told the man and others that he had been carjacked, and the car that went off the cliff was his. >> he said he was driving past year -- here,

hit by a gun on his head. j.r.: still many unanswered questions as to why those in this video ran from the accident scene. >> it was a miracle no one was killed because there were people walking up and down the stairs a minute or two before the car flew down the hill, so we are lucky nobody got killed. j.r.: j.r. stone, abc 7 news. dion: in the east bay, police broke up an early ring sideshow in oakland. this was the scene around 4:00 this morning at the intersection of hagan berger coliseum way. you can see multiple cars taking turns doing donuts in the intersection. the sideshow lasted 15 to 20 minutes before police broke up the crowd of spectators. with this afternoon, the oakland police department tweeted this out, saying they would have more resources on the streets this weekend as part of their

sideshow enforcement. cars who take part in illegal activity will be towed. happening tomorrow, the competency trial for the man accused of a stabbing spree in the city of davis is scheduled to begin. the yolo county journey will determine if carlos dominguez can stand trial -- jury will determine if carlos dominguez can stand trial. last month, a court appointed doctor found him not competent, but the attorney disputed the dr.'s findings and requested a jury trial. if he is found incompetent, dominguez will be hospitalized. evacuations have now been lifted in the somerset area of el dorado county after a wildfire got close to homes today. cal fire says the fire burned more than 13 acres and at last check was 50% contained. right now, road closures in the area are still in place and

people are being asked avoid the area while crews continue to mop up throughout the night. moving on after a weekend of heat, there is relief in the forecast. let's get to spencer standing by, and this could not come soon enough. spencer: let's take a look at our planner for tomorrow. early tomorrow morning, 7:00, there will be lots of clouds around. high clouds and fog as well. 60 degrees inland, upper 50's from the coast to the bay. by noon, sunnier, but high clouds. already 80 degrees inland and upper 50's along the coast. 4:00 p.m., we are getting close to the peak of heating. we get mid 70's around the bay and about 62 degrees on the coast. 7:00 p.m., it will be slow to cool down. still 84 degrees in many inland locations and 60 degrees near the coast. right now as we wait for this

wonderful day coming our way tomorrow, we have temperatures mainly in the upper 50's to low 60's around the bay shoreline and low to mid 60's inland. it will be a more comfortable night then we had last night as temperatures are dropping nighttime and daytime. i will have the full forecast later. dion: this is what we like to see. the martinez refinery spewed toxic coal dust into the air last night for the third time in eight months. this is the video from the last time it happened less than two weeks ago. the dust is a byproduct of petroleum refining, which is harmful to lungs. the company says last night's release was contained on-site. i hazardous materials team from contra costa health don't no evidence of impact on nearby neighborhoods. -- contra costa

evidence of impact on nearby neighborhoods. you may remember on thursday a test discovered e. coli in the water supply was an issue. last night, officials say three consecutive follow up tests were negative, and the water board approved to lift the water boiling advisory. as part of abc 7's commitment to building a better bay area, one of our issues is focused on housing. today, a group met with state legislators to call attention to the area housing crisis. the group of 22 santa c churches asked lawmakers on what is being done to help the housed and undocumented communities. >> one of the big challenges low income is easier to deal with, but undocumented is people like us have -- to mixer nobody keep the registry of anyone who was undocumented. dion: the groups are passing for

two bills. those bills would create state white tenant protections and help religious organizations create housing on their property. out of a developing story on a major d closure on the east bay. eastbo interstate 80 rema shut down between highway four in hercules and cummings skyway in crockett. you can seem here in the green, and notice the red on the map. that is the str of road that is closed. closure began on friday night, but the goodewis the road is scheduled to reopen on time by 5:00 tomorrow mning. cornell barnard drive perspectives on the progress. >> it is a lot, but it has to be done. cornell: sharon bolton from hercules is trying to avoid driving on i 80 this weekend were a closure is happening. >> i saw signs on the freeway

really be successful on this job. cornell: after this, there is more repaving to come. caltrans says this lane will be repaved the weekend of august 4, and this one will be repaved on the weekend of august 18. after that, caltrans lands a four-day closure over the labor day weekend to repave westbound lanes. >> by doing this work, we take 106 nights of closures down to four. cornell: caltrans says i-80 is scheduled to reopen on monday morning. cornell barnard, abc 7 news. dion: a collecting southern california to las vegas received an approval to move forward. the project received an environmental review from the federal railway administration for the project. the bright line train will also be stopped near rancho cucamonga and the las vegas trip -- strip.

dion: this tuesday the a's will face the giants in san francisco for the bay bridge series. but as the team crosses the bay for the tradition, a's fans are

hoping their friendly rivals will support them in their push to sell the team. our reporter has a look at the effort to unite the bay. reporter: long before talks of the a's moving to vegas began, the giants were in the same position back in the 1990's. they were about to move to tampa bay until a local ownership group stepped in to save them. >> we are hoping they can understand what we are going through. we are in the bottom of the ninth and about to lose the a's. reporter: that is why jorge lyons says they are hoping to unite the bay by getting giants fans on board with their push to sell the team. >> we are asking the bay area to unite for this one because and keep the a's in oakland. reporter: weather 20,000 a's fans showed up and packed the coliseum in green shirts at the first reverse boycott in june, hoping to pick up on the same momentum. they have partnered with another

group, handing out 8500 the bay posters to fans at oracle park. >> in our version, we have the giants players standing over oracle, and the a's players standing over the coliseum, and they are shaking hands in unity. reporter: each poster has a cheer card in the back with detailed instructions on how to join the protest. >> in the fifth inning, you stand up, be silent for the first at-bat, and after the first 55 seconds, start chanting , sell the team. reporter: the oakland 68 also have plans to hand out sell shirts to a's and giants fans, except this time they will be black-and-white. >> we are not at home, so we are doing a neutral color. so giants fans can wear this if they choose to. reporter: although the nevada senate already passed a $380

million bill last month to fund a new stadium for the a's in vegas, these fans are still hoping for change in the 11th hour in hopes of keeping baseball on both sides of the bay. >> it has turned into an all out , hail mary type of situation. dion: spencer joining us now with a look at the weather, and things are cooling down. better to watch a baseball game. spencer: especially if you are watching it here and not in las vegas. it is cooling down here but not in las vegas. we have calm winds right now. early in the evening, we had robust tests. right now, concord is gusting in place with winds at 25 miles per hour, but closer to the bay, it is calmer. we have had a cool down the last 24 hours. the temperature change shows locations like concord are 10 degrees cooler than at this time

last night. livermore, 17 degrees cooler. closer to the bay and the coast, it is less of a cool down, but still a cool down nonetheless. the wide view from our sutro tower camera looking out over san francisco where it is 68 degrees right now, low to mid 60's in mountain view, san jose, and 55 degrees at half moon bay. a nice view of calm conditions at emeryville right now, just a few high clouds around. 57 at novato. low 60's at napa, fairfield concord, and livermore. and a live view from our exploratorium camera across the embarcadero, a few high clouds around, but otherwise a clear night and these are the forecast futures. expect a mix of high and low clouds overnight. maybe a few damp spots on the roadways for the drivers.

seasonably warm inland tomorrow and tuesday, but we will have cooler conditions beginning wednesday. overnight we will see high clouds continued to scream across the bay area -- stream across the bay area. a little bit of a marine later, but not much develop overnight. most of the day tomorrow will have filtered sunshine with high clouds and sunny skies. overnight low temperatures mainly in the 50's, so a cooler night overnight than we had last night, except in places like antioch, where the overnight low will be 64 degrees. highs tomorrow, 81 morgan hill, so it is warm in the south bay but not hot. low to mid-60's on the coast. downtown san francisco will have a high of dixie seven degrees tomorrow. santa rosa with 84 and 82 napa. 76 in hayward, 78 in catchment valley.

we will have lots of low 80's in concord, pitts, antioch, but upper 80's in san ramon. as we skip ahead to the maximum highs for the remainder of the week, tuesday moving down more with highs in the low to mid 80's inland. the same picture on thu here's the accuweather 7-day forecast. the major cooling coming our way no 90 degree temperatures, anywhere in our inland areas after tuesday, so a refreshing change. dion: summer is not over yet. spencer: more hot weather is coming our way. dion: speaking of the rest of the country, more than 40 million americans are still facing a heat wave. dangerous heat is breaking records. in palm springs, people faced nine consecutive days of extreme heat over 90 degrees. this is the worst they have seen

in 50 years. >> it was 120, and it felt like someone lit a match in front of us. the heat was overbearing. >> not only do we have less business, but our costs like electricity are higher. spencer: -- dion: in houston, texas, some people echoed those sentiments, saying they are unable to afford the rising energy bills and going without air conditioning. thankfully, the heat ow moving to the northeast. two hikers were found dead in nevada's valley of fire state park yesterday afternoon. two women saw the hikers go into the park and got concerned w they did not return. police have opened an investigation. they have no provided a cause of death but according to the national weather service, the park aged a high of 114

dion: the second annual line dance festival returned to san francisco's chinatown to celebrate community and culture this weekend. ♪ the two day event continued today with several dance performances and martial arts demonstrations. the festival organizers says this is where the lion dance began in the u.s. and says that this is the largest group of lion dancers to perform on the west coast. both the giants and the a's look for a win while some giants stars are holding basketball camp. chris alvarez with a preview of sports. chris: coming up, the giants and a's look to gain some momentum before the bay bridge series on tuesday. plus, what you head to arkansas? the reason why one worriers

>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. >> his hands up. dion: tonight, an investi underway into why a police dog was released to attack an unarmed semi truck driver in ohio. it happened as the man was surrendering to officers following a high-speed chase that all began with a missing mudflap. police have released body camera video. our reporter has the story, but a warning that some may find this video difficult to watch. reporter: in ohio, a canine

police officer is under investigation tonight after his dog attacked an unarmed suspect after he already surrendered with his hands in the air. officers tried pulling the truck driver over for a missing mudflap. police say he refused, starting a chase. at one point, the man veers to the right, forcing highway patrol into the shoulder. in one instance, a video shows that he stops and the again. the man seen here getting out, complying with the officers. to the left, you can see the police officer crossing the grass with his service dog. >> do not release the dog with his hands up. reporter: this highway patrol man repeatedly warns the officer against using the dog. then the officer releases the dog and commands it to attack the truck driver.

the truck driver custody and given first aid. >> it was a dog bite. >> i did stop. reporter: that ohio highway patrolman later seen talking to colleagues about using the k9. >> you cannot send a getting into excessive force issues on somebody with their hands up. maybe they are not complying, but they are not a safety risk to anybody. reporter: we have reached out multiple times to the city of circleville and its police department. the department saying as has no comments as the incident is currently being investigated by the use of force board. dion: tomorrow marks one week until the contract expires between ups and its union workers. while negotiations are expected to resume this week, the president for the union says they are organizing in preparation for a nationwide strike that would involve

thousands of workers. our reporter has more on this story. >> we are organized, we are strategized. now it is time to polarize. reporter: over the weekend, teamsters union general president speaking out at a rally in atlanta ahead of a ups strike. the effect will be historic. the largest strike from a single company in american history. a way to stop concerned ups customers from going to rival services. >> ups chose to strike themselves, and we will withhold our labor on july 31 at 12:01 a.m. but if we get an agreement and we recommended, we will not withhold our labor. reporter: on wednesday, ups released a statement saying that we are prepared to increase our

leading pay and benefits, but need to work quickly on a fair deal that provides certainty for customers, employees, and businesses across the country. on saturday, o'brien said 95% the contract has been negotiated, adding that ups knows they need to pay their members. >> the packages do not move unless we move them. reporter: according to a teamsters spokesperson, negotiators from the two sides will meet on tuesday in washington. dion: no to shut down hollywood. sag-aftra is allowing small film studio a24 to use its actors after it excepted all of the union's terms. while this independent production company was able to agree to the union's offer, negotiations with major studios are still stalled. this as the writers guild of america is about to enter its third month on strike. this weekend, the union did not

the fraudulent posts have been deleted. the fixed twitter account is still active, but therapy feeders -- but sarah post about selling a taylor swift ticket were all removed. police told them it is not identity theft if no actual crime was committed. it is still unclear who removed those phony twitter posts. speaking of the platform, twitter's blue bird logo could be going away in a few hours. elon musk tweeted that he plans to change the logo to an x. right now the url take you to twitter. according to the posts, the interim logo will go live, but at last check we have not seen those changes. industry experts say it is not surprising, given musk's history

29,000 runners took part in today's san francisco marathon. brice daubord from the first man to finish overall. the first to finish for the women was leandra zimmermann, and the first non-binary runner to finish was j.l. odom, both from san francisco. >> you want to be better and have that mindset of rehabilitating and bettering yourself. lots of parallels with running and being in prison, where there is a real light of hope and you keep going. dion: i love that, just keep going. 26 mile route was along the city through the presidio, across the golden gate bridge, back through golden gate park, and finished next to the bay bridge. congrats to all.

a tall ship between students. the deaf and hard of hearing students was in san francisco to learn how to sail. they are all from the utah school for the deaf and went out to call the sea. they learned to steer, navigate, and handle the sales. all of the activities were available in american sign language, and the teaching went both ways, with crew also learning asl. >> for me, i love to see the kids learn and grow and become confident in the skills they are learning, and to really leave their phone and technology behind and experience the world around us. dion: i love that. put the phone down, enjoy the surroundings. the spokesperson says the crew wants to make maritime world available and accessible to all. they are doing that by making their emergency procedures more visible and implementing signs in the cruise sailing teams.

[laughter] here is a look at what is coming our way. we will have a mix of high and low clouds overnight, maybe even some patchy drizzle. morning commuters may encounter some roadways that are wet, but not many. cooling later in the week starting on wednesday. overnight lows will be in the mid to upper 50's tonight, cooler than the last few nights, except in places like antioch, where the low will only drop to 64. highs tomorrow, low 60's at the coast, mid 70's the bay, low 90's in the warmest inland locations. the last couple of days, we have had 100's, and going into midweek, we will have more low to mid 90's and lend, but then we will have a sharp drop in temperatures on wednesday.
