the death toll climbing. in texas, health officials say four people in the ft. worth area have died within weeks. >> normally, 101, 102 degrees in texas is not unusual. when you combine it with the high heat index value, that's what's catching people by surprise. >> reporter: in california, two hikers are recovering after being rescued from bell canyon in los angeles this weekend. officials saying it was heat related illness, with temperatures well into the 90s. with rising temperatures come soaring electric bills. people cranking the ac. some estimates utility bills up nearly 12% this summer over last. power grids in hard hit states holding up. texas seeing record usage over the last few weeks. >> the grid is starting to be stressed. after there's not enough to keep the lights on the hottest days of the year or the coldest days. >> reporter: back here in miami, storms could bring some relief to the area later this week. but for millions, this record

heat not letting up. linsey? >> no reprieve in sight for so many. victor, thank you. for more now ginger is tracking where temperatures are set to soar next. good morning, ginger. >> reporter: phoenix will go for day 25 of consecutive days of 110 plus which beats their old record by more than a week. it is going to move into the great lakes where we've barely had a summer comparatively. let's look at what's happening. remember, we were talking 50s and 60s for morning lows just last week. now bismark will go for a high of 95. minneapolis will go to 90. by the mid week going to be closer to 100. for actual temperatures. those are air temperatures. so feels like will be well into the 105 plus. let's focus in on some records. las vegas, if they do get to 110 today would break their consecutive stretch. phoenix. that's what makes this different from the desert southwest.

of course they get hot. but to stay hot and have no break, that's a big deal. minneapolis there 97. that will feel like easily into 100s. indianapolis also and eventually george we will get a touch of summer. new york hasn't even had an official heat wave yet. >> it's not just here. we're going overseas where firefighters have forced many to flee the area. one of the most popular tourist deft anywayings in the country. marcus more is in greece with the latest. good morning, marcus. >> reporter: george, good morning. this is one of the many structures that burned to the ground here east of athens. you can see part of the roof collapsing onto the ground. yesterday there were more than 80 fires burning in parts of greece, including one that forced the evacuation of thousands of people. overnight new evacuations ordered on a greek island as ferocious flames raced towards the shore line. just hours before -- >> it hailed. everyone screaming and shouting and crying.

>> reporter: a dream vacation turned apocalyptic as flames on another popular island in greece forced thousands to flee, some by boat. others by land. some still in their swimsuits walking the beaches and roads and flooding the streets desperately trying to get out. greek authorities saying it is the largest evacuation from a wild fire in the country's history. some escaping the inferno and finding shelter in a stadium, while thousands raced for the airport, some forced to stay overnight waiting for a seat on a plane, finding a spot to sleep anywhere they can, on floors, even conveyor belts. a couple from missouri were evacuated from their hotel before heading to the northern part of the island. the couple slept in the airport before finding a hotel in rose town. >> we just started walking along the street with the luggage, bag. hundreds of people along with it. the fire just continued to get closer. the smoke was all around us. >> we could see the flame.

that's when it really got scary and horrifying actually for me. >> reporter: locals devastated. my house, our heart is here, please save us, she cried. turkey, slovakia and other countries sending in their own planes and trucks to help battle the raging flames. in terms of the weather conditions, it was 113 degrees yesterday in athens. it is slightly cooler today, but only briefly. temperatures are expected to rise again on tuesday. and, george, the risk of more fires is high. >> okay, marcus. thanks very much. robin? breaking news overnight and what we are learning about the u.s. soldier in north korean custody. as tension escalates between china and taiwan. britt is tracking it all for us. good morning. >> reporter: finally some word on the mystery surrounding travis king who crossed into north korea last week. talks are under way with pyongyang. this morning the u.n. command which operates the dmz, said a conversation has begun with north korea's military and that

its primary concern is king's welfare. north korea is silent for now. in the past pyongyang has used these cases as propaganda chips. at the moment, we don't know his condition. we don't know his where abouts. you'll remember that instead of boarding a plane to texas where he could have faced military punishment, private king joined a group at the dmz. witnesses say that he then ran across america, he ran across the border. soldiers trying to stop him. >> appreciate that update, britt. meanwhile, there are -- tensions seem to be rising between china and taiwan? >> reporter: that's right. taiwan is kicking off five days of military exercises aimed at preparing for a chinese invasion. these are annual drills that will test taiwan's combat readiness in case of attack, including weaponry acquired from the u.s. and china is making its anger known over this. over the weekend sending 37 warplanes in 24 hours.

elon musk, who took twitter private twisted just the letter x in a new font calling on fans to help design the new logos. the company's new ceo said x is the future state of unlimited interactivity centered in audio, video, messaging, payments/banking creating a global market place for ideas, goods, services and opportunities. >> the end goal, the golden goose for musk, is to turn this into what i call a super app. they're looking to add marketing, subscriptions. they're trying to be the only one. >> reporter: though what exactly this means for twitter's millions of users is unclear. this is the latest and biggest change the site has undergone since musk paid $44 million to buy it last year. amid widespread controversial changes along with claims hateful content has grown more prominent on twitter, many advertisers have pulled away and revenue has dropped sharply.

good morning, eva. >> reporter: there are a lot of questions this morning. police say they think only one person can provide those answer. carlee russell herself. they are urging her to speak with them. the mystery of what happened growing. one of those closest to her coming out on her behalf. this morning as questions swirl about carlee russell's disappearance, her boyfriend speaking out, defending her. russell claimed she was kidnapped but escaped to return home 49 hours later. telling the new york post, i want everyone to stop bullying her. i know what it seems like, what she did. just stop bullying on social media adding, think about her mental health. nobody deserves to be cyber bullied. simmons had recently removed all traces of russell from his social media pages including a since deleted facebook post that said she was literally fighting for her life. russell told authorities she saw a child walking alone on the side of the interstate on her way home on the evening of july 13th.

>> reporter: good morning again, robin. this is centered on a 1,000 foot barrier that's been deployed in the rio grande. that long line of floating buoys that have razor wire. the department of justice says not only do these buoys raise serious humanitarian concerns, they also violate a number of laws. texas has until today to remove them with the department of justice going to sue. it doesn't seem they are going to be removed because texas governor replied to this suit on twitter said the state has a sovereign authority to defend its border and added, quoted, we will see you in court, mr. president. in an e-mail obtained by abc news, the texas department of public safety trooper called the buoys nothing but inhumane traps for migrants saying some officers were told to push the migrants back into the rio grande. and even denying them water. the department denies those allegations. a spokes person tells abc news they do treat migrants humanely and the barriers are designed to deter border crossings which have reached all time highs earlier this year. robin? >> thank you. >> new to the new warning over

>> we're gonna turn to the gma cover story. a new report that details the rise in cancer cases among younger people. doctors are searching for answers. this morning doctors are sounding the alarm about cancers on the rise in people younger than 50. david towel was 34 in 2019 when he learned he had stage 3 colorectal cancer without any family history of the disease. >> i was always one of those people who thought, i'm young, i'm healthy, rub some dirt on it and get back out there. but my reaction was shock. >> david is not alone. colorectal cancer has seen more than a 46% increase in early on set cases from 2000 to 2019. >> colorectal cancer in young people is most often diagnosed at very advanced stages when it is less likely to be cured. maybe the scareiest thing about that is we actually don't know what is driving this uptick. >> colorectal cancer is one of several common cancers on the

rise in young adults under 50 in the past 20 years. all cancers are on the rise nearly 13% with notable upticks in diagnosis for breast cancer and stomach cancer. one study found 8 of the 14 cancers were in the digestive system including diet and lifestyle might be playing a part in young people's dying no seus. >> following a healthy diet, less red meat, not smoking, not drinking and trying to maintain a normal body weight are all very important things that we can all do to try to decrease our risk. >> as for david, he believes that education is the key to maintaining your health. >> get looked at. be an advocate. understand what these symptoms could mean and do everything that you can to get checked out. >> and chief medical correspondent dr. jen ashton is here. we heard doctors don't really know what's going on through there are some theories. >> report talks about how you

can be the picture of perfect health, like david was, and still be one of these statistics. there are a lot of theories. the primary suspect right now has to do with obesity. our diet, what kind of foods we're getting. lifestyle goes hand in hand. weight and the obesity epidemic, things in our environment or even changes in the gut microbime. >> how do screening recommendations change? >> there are over a dozen cancers on the rise in people under the age of 50. but we're starting to see a shift in guidelines. breast cancer screening for the average risk woman now suggested to start at age 40. colorectal screening dropped from 50 to 45 for the average risk person. for a lot of these cancers, george, there are no accepted screening test, like pancreatic cancer. this is a concerning trend.

i don't know what to do right now. we need help. >> as the debris still lingers across the small town, so do the invisible injuries. >> we went through a devastating time. in your mind, your mind is just catching up with what went on. >> to date, fema approving more than $5.2 million in disaster grants for sharkey county. >> recovery takes a long time. but when we look at that, there's been a lot of changes already. i'm seeing roofs going on. people are rebuilding their homes. i'm watching temporary units being put in place. >> but for many residents including business owner curtis macon, progress can't come fast enough. >> my ipad for my cash register. it's emotional. >> as frustration against local leaders is mounting. >> we're at a stand still. we just want some answers. we just want to move on to the next phase.

>> concerned citizens recently taking to the streets after multiple cancelled city board meetings. a key issue, the nearly 300 displaced residents still living in hotels and the surrounding area with no clear timeline from city officials on when and how they will return home. >> for the ones that was with us and didn't have anything, ones that got displaced in motels, they're not doing anything. i'm ready to get out of mississippi. >> rolling fork's mayor telling abc news the city is working alongside fema to locate land for temporary housing and rebuilding the community as a whole will take time. >> this is an on going project. this is not a quick fix to what we're going through here in this community. i think we need to be more patient and understand that a build back community is going to take proper planning, strategic planning. that's our number one priority. >> meanwhile, signs of hope

emerge. a community run initiative called build back better working to help renters become homeowners. >> we are building between 12 and 1300 square foot homes. a few businesses getting back up and running. >> the town, they need us here. >> people doing what they can to support each other. like the south delta high school football team spending an afternoon clearing debris, finding purpose through pain. >> we may be in a storm right now, but the sun gonna shine in the morning. we'll come back even better. >> that is indeed the hope everyone is clinging to. hundreds of families there in rolling fork are still displaced, some living in hotels, staying with relatives and friends. just to illustrate what the situation is like there on the ground. take a look at this food drive line. people lined up three hours before it even started just for the basic needs. we just want to keep people in mind that it's been four months.
