they have intentions outside of our usual land-use ideas. dan: tonight, new insight into a mysterious company that have purchased nearly $1 billion of land in solano county, including right near travis air force base. it is all a bit of a mystery we are trying to sort out. good evening. i'm dan ashley. ama: and i am ama daetz. they are highly skeptical of the lack of transparency. dan: i-team reporter stephanie sierra is here with us with the latest developments. stephanie: the group, flannery associates, acquired tens of thousands of acres of land, equivalent to nearly double the size of san francisco, and nobody knows why, not even the federal government. now we know's alleged silence is sobering news to a lot. >> that's what makes it scary, i as we know nothing about them. stephanie: a mysterious 800 million dollar purchase of dry

farmland near travis air force base, one of the most critical military bases in the western u.s., has raised serious questions, and local officials say the process has gone from suspicious to intimidating. sarah: their intent is not to grow all of trees. it feels nefarious. to me, nearly all of the land, to the point where you are going to sue someone to intimidate you to sell to you, those e not farmers. stephanie: sarah donnelly is the attorney for this area. federal officials told the i-team they are struggling find out who is behind this investment group that has purchased the acreage near the base, and more importantly, what it be used for. sarah: it seems like, you know, there is something larger in the works. stephanie: the problem is, no one knows, that has raised a bigger question -- why are we in the situation in the first place? we brought this to the chair of

the house armed services committee, congressman adam smith. owners who are purchasing land near military sites or national security sites should be required to identify themselves? rep. smith: absolutely. i think we need greater transparency on that. stephanie: there was no clear reporting structures from sensitive basis to federal agencies responsible. congressman john garamendi is working to change that, adding new language in the national defense authorization act, or ndaa, that would streamline communications to the proper authorities to review these cases. rep. garamendi: if you are not and operation, why are you keeping a secret? stephanie: last year, 300 acres of farmland was purchased near an air force base in another state. rep. garamendi: to build a 400-foot silo that could look

directly into the base. wait a minute. what is going on there? stephanie: flannery associates told the i-team no group holds any significant control over the flannerys. congressman smith said that is charmingly nonspecific. if it is determined that this is connected to a foreign adversary, what do you think should happen next? rep. could i think we need to look at options and evaluate. it is going to depend. we have direct investment in this country from a wide variety of different countries. i think we need to get the information and evaluate what theest steps forward are to protect national security while also recognizing that we're going to be doing business with china. we are not going to cut it all off to do we just need to be cautious. stephanie: congressman smith added he's unaware of any specific evidence tying china to this flannery group, but he didn't make it clear we don't have the transparency in place yet to completely rule that out. dan: this is just such a strange

story. interesting. i know you will be back at 5:30 with karina to talk about this a little more. stephanie: yes. ama: if you would like to get in touch with steph and the i-team, call this number on your screen or go to abc7news.com/iteam. dan: we are hearing from the livermore police chief who says he is frustrated with the alameda county district attorney after he says she failed to respond to his letter asking that special enhancements be added in the prosecution of a violent offender who committed two robberies at a livermore shopping center two months ago. abc 7 news reporter leslie brinkley is on the story. leslie: on a sunday afternoon in may at the shopping center near interstate 580, a 21-year-old suspect assaulted a woman with his weapon in this fast food parking lot, violently attacking her as she fought back, according to livermore police. he then attacked a second woman and stole her purse at gunpoint nearby. police tracked the suspect down

using his ankle bracelet. it is a crime that terrorized residents in the suburban city, according to the police chief. responsible was currently on parole for a prior violent felony involving a firearm and was wearing an ankle monitor when he committed these crimes. leslie: according to the alameda justice department, he is facing numerous charges including robbery and assault with a deadly weapon to his next court date is set for august 11 and could include a possible relocation of parole and a diversion hearing which could open up the potential for no jail time. the pleasanton police chief was upset that alameda county's new district attorney, pamela price, did not file sentencing enhance against the defendant, which, if convicted, would make his sentence longer. chief young wrote a letter to the da on july 6, asking for accountability. chief young: we found that enhancements were not filed,

which are an important part of the case, and my opinion. that was disappointing, because i feel like that puts our community at risk. leslie: has she reached up to you or filed those enhancements? chief young: no. leslie:leslie: you've not heard from her? chief young: no. leslie: pamela price in march altered the enhancements, requiring more approval before they could be filed. price campaigned on and was elected in 2022 on a platform to take steps to end mass incorporation to restore address mass and balances. >> our analysis of the facts of the case or our decisions, they are ours to make. we are the lawyers of the people. suspect remains in jail. i'm leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. ama: two men suspected of being

on a gunfight on 880 will be arraigned on gun charges. a stray bullet killed 23-month-old jasper wu. trevor greene and ivan givens were carrying an ar-15 style rifle when they tried to another man on the freeway. the two also faced gang enhancements. if convicted, they could face life in prison. dan: that paragon bottle two vehicles near police headquarters. this was near 9th street and broadway. reports of gunfire on 11th and clay. police inside the police administration on 7th street heard the gunfire. officers searched the area, found several vehicles were hit by bullets. it does not appear anyone was hurt, and no one was arrested. ama: new details on a car ov the weekend that happened on the sanchez street stairs when a car went airborne, landing upside down at the

bottom. as witnesses rushed to help the occupants of the car, those people took off running. abc 7 newseporter suzanne phan tells u the police robbery division is investigating, and one supervisor says the car involved in the crash was stolen months before. suzanne: crews full, cleaning up the mess from a wildcard chase. tree inspectors and structural engineers were on scene monday to assess the damage from saturday's crash. >> i don't know why they would be going so fast. suzanne: people in the neighborhood are still stunned that a driver barreled through a sign and gun were -- and guard rail. >> it is a dead-end street. suzanne: witnesses heard the crash. the car tumbling down a steep embankment. >> i guess a 45 degree angle. suzanne: the car ended up upside

down. martha, who lives around the corner, cannot believe it. martha: amazing that they survived at all, and it is amazing to me that the car came through all those trees and then through the railing and then landed upside down, and he still alive. suzanne: witnesses say the driver and the people inside the car took off running. police have not been able to find anybody involved. abc 7 news has learned that sfpd robbery division is investigating the incident. supervisor rafael mandelman confirms the car involved in the crash belongs to a man who was car draft -- carjacked. a neighbor who helped people get out of the snack car told abc 7 news this -- >> we've got three minutes they arrive. a bunch of stuff came out of the car, and in the end, when they were cleaning up the scene, they also pulled out a gun. suzanne: a man pulled up after the accident. he claimed he was carjacked.

>> he said he was driving past here, they open his door, got the guy out. he said he was hit by a gun on his head. suzanne: roger said he cannot believe no one was killed in the crash. roger: two land upside down. suzanne: the crashing now a crime scene. in san francisco, suzanne phan abc 7 news. dan: breed's brother was given a shorter prison sentence today. a superior court judge said napoleon brown could be released within a year. in 2005, he was in his 244 years in prison for murder, armed robbery, and carjacking. he was sentenced to 31 years following a change in law regarding how california defines murder. the charges are now involuntary manslaughter, armed robbery, and carjacking. into thousand. ama: a jury was seated in the,

ama: more changes at twitter elon musk continues his efforts to rebrand the company. abc 7 news anchor karina nova joins us with the latest. karina: as part of the rebrand, elon musk had plans to remove the iconic twitter sign. there was concern over whether musk had a permit for this kind of work. musk signaled last month t change is coming, shining a large x on the building, twitter's new name. matt dorsey showed up and weighed in on that change. matt: rebranding that happens, and i don't feel strongly about it one way or another. i want to make sure that if those signs are being changed, there's a remaining process for doing that -- permitting process for doing that. we don't want to have a needless

triple digits for the weekend. he a live view from our emeryville camera, and it is a lovely view toward san francisco. fog expands tonight, patchy morning drizzle looking at a brief one-they warm up tomorrow and then cooling again midweek for those of you who don't like the hot weather. tomorrow morning, we will notice that fog pushing and locally around the bay come a little drizzle to start the day, and we keep the mid and high level cloud streaming in from the south, but we'll have to worry about any thunderstorms in the bay area. temperatures thing in the morning to start of the day. watch out for the fog and patchy drizzle, which will create slippery roadways. tomorrow afternoon, the heat is back, a little but of a turnup in those temperatures. low 60's coast side and everyone else in between that range of the 60's to the 90's. for the bay bridge series tomorrow evening at oracle park, it will be very nice weather. 65 degrees at 6:45, dropping off to about 60 at nine: 45.
