hiking amid excessive heat warnings. >> we found a number of fatalities over the years when the temperature exceeds 100, 105 degrees. >> reporter: across the country in national parks, there have been at least five heat related deaths. >> it's pretty unbearable. >> reporter: in phoenix, they're expected to see its 26th consecutive day of temperatures in excess of 110 degrees. it hasn't been below 90 degrees in 15 days. bally wise health in phoenix saying two-thirds of their patients experiencing contact burns from pavement where surface burns can reach 180 degrees. >> most people don't realize that the pavement, concrete, cement, sidewalks, rocks in bright sunlight on a hot afternoon, it only takes a fraction of a second to get a really bad burn. >> reporter: to give you an idea, kansas city only saw three 100-degree days last year. they're expecting to see at least 100 degrees every day this week.

linsey? >> alex, this heat just not releasing its grip. ginger is tracking that from st. petersburg, florida. good morning, ginger. >> good morning to you. here we've had one of the hottest starts of the year. really south florida, central florida have had hottest years. we've got to talk about the desert southwest. what they're missing is monsoon flow. usually this time of year you start to get the storms that would cool things off. they've had little to nothing in some cities. so they're gonna keep going with those obliterating consecutive heat stretches. but what's different about this, now that pattern has been stuck keeping the great lakes in that cool summer pattern has broken. that's where that is bulging north. minneapolis will feel like close to 100, then 100 yards the end of the week. it doesn't last forever. that's the difference. this is not weeks or a month on end like they've been dealing with from texas back to arizona. however, it is something we have not seen yet this summer. we will have our first official

heat wave in new york city, which is a little bit late. linsey? >> triple digits just all over the map there, ginger. thank you. robin? to the border. the biden administration is suing texas and governor greg abbott for refusing to remove buoys in the rio grande designed to deter migrants. mireya villarreal is at the border with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, robin. if you talk to anybody here on the border, half will say they are just fine with the security that is already in place, like the fence you see right behind me. some will say they want more security. but one thing that a lot of people are starting to agree on is the fight over migrants and the militarization of these border towns is bringing a battleground to their back yard, and it's getting old. overnight, the department of justice suing the state of texas over these red buoys. the doj claiming this 1,000-foot barrier was not approved by the army corps of engineers, now demanding it be removed from the rio grande river, but in a

letter to president biden greg abbott doubling down writing, texas will see you in court, mr. president, and making his case during an interview with fox news. >> working together, these devices have turned away and repelled maybe hundreds of thousands of people who try to enter into the united states illegally. >> reporter: but since the end of title 42 in may, border crossings have been down more than 30%. the white house responding to abbott's defiance. >> and what you see the governor doing is dangerous and unlawful. it is hurting the process. >> reporter: the buoy barrier is placed in shallow waters forcing migrants into deep parts of the river. some crawling through razor wire to reach the river banks, inflicting injuries on that journey. >> you see a war zone. layers and layers of wire. >> reporter: back in eagle pass, action can't come fast enough for business owner jesse compton. he's also suing the state of texas over the barrier and the harm it's caused his kayaking

business. >> it's always been about the river and everything that's connected to it. my business, my community, my culture. >> reporter: now, the doj, their lawsuit will be heard first in a federal district court. but greg abbott is already saying he will appeal to the 5th circuit court of appeals if they lose in that district court, and he will take it all the way to the u.s. supreme court if he has to. robin? >> thank you for your reporting. george? overseas to the crisis in israel. lawmakers passed a controversial law that critics say will under mine the country's democracy bitteringly dividing the country. there were mass protests overnight. the country is on edge. tom soufi burridge is there with the latest. good morning, tom. >> reporter: good morning, george. israel waking up deeply divided amid a continuing sense of crisis here after lawmakers passed the government's controversial law stripping the supreme court of its ability to strike down

government decisions deemed by judges to be unreasonable. protests continuing late into the night. police dispersing crowds with water cannons, israel, quote, moving towards dictatorship. an important check on government power has been removed. they say this is just the beginning. prime minister netanyahu hitting back saying the new law strengthens democracy because the government elected by a majority, will be freer to act. amid the uncertainty, shares in major israeli companies falling, unions threatening strike. all eyes on thousands of israeli army reservists who, before the vote, threatened they would refuse to serve once the bill went through. the white house saying it was, quote, unfortunate that the bill passed with the slimmest majority. israel this morning in new and unchartered territory. george? >> tom, thank you very much. robin? we are hearing from some of the passengers aboard the delta flight found for new york that hit severe turbulence and hail which damaged the plane and forced an emergency landing. stephanie ramos is at newark

airport with more for us. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: robin, good morning. flight from milan headed to jfk was diverted after the plane was badly damaged by hail shortly after takeoff. a terrifying flight for delta passengers. >> we all heard a noise we had never heard before. >> reporter: forced to deplane after an emergency landing in rome after severe hail caused damage to its nose and wing forcing an emergency landing monday. >> one passenger looked out the window and saw the wind shaking violently like it was going to break off. >> reporter: the flight with 11 crew members and 215 passengers on board was originally scheduled to fly from milan to jfk before diverting to rome shortly after takeoff. >> the turbulence was like being on a roller coaster ride. dropping significantly. >> reporter: the airline apologizing to its customers, saying maintenance personnel is conducting a thorough evaluation

of the aircraft. the safety of our customers and crew is delta's top priority. >> hail is a very significant situation if you encounter it at altitude in a jetliner at high speeds. it won't bring an airplane down, but it can do a lot of damage to different parts of the airplane that it encounters first. >> reporter: delta says all of the passengers and crew were able to get off that plane safely. robin? >> all right, stephanie, thank you. we're going to turn now to the tragedy at the obama estate where the chef was found dead. the obamas were not there at the time. we're learning more about what happened. demarco morgan has details. good morning, demarco. >> reporter: talk about a tragedy. husband and father of two went missing about 100 feet off shore sunday evening. his body wouldn't be recovered until the following day. the obamas saying they join the victims family and those who knew him in grieving the loss. >> african-american male on a paddle board. no life preserver. >> reporter: tragedy unfolding near the obama family's martha's

vineyard estate. police recovering the body of their personal chef. a beloved personal chef and friend of the former president and first lady. the call for help came in sunday evening for the missing paddle border who witnesses tell police was last seen wearing all black before they lost eye contact with him. >> 40-year-old male, possible drowning. >> reporter: campbell's paddle board and hat would surface, but no sign of campbell. then the unimaginable. the husband and father of two found dead 100 feet from shore at a depth of about eight feet in the edgar town pond. police say divers found his body by deploying a side scan sonar from a boat. campbell first worked as a sous chef for the obamas at the white house. >> got to keep it under lock and key. >> reporter: seen here brewing beer in this white house video. >> take the beer bottle. >> reporter: now authorities investigating the drowning. campbell was on the vineyard visiting. the obamas were not there at the time of the incident. mr. and mrs. obama releasing a

statement calling him a warm, fun, extraordinary kind person who made all of our lives a little brighter, adding he was a talented sous chef at the white house. he's been part of our lives ever since, and our hearts are broken that he's gone. campbell is survived by his wife and their twin boys. the couple's instagram posts over the years showing their close relationship and tight knit family. state and local police are investigating the incident. guys, if you go to his instagram page, he was full of life and personality. a big loss. >> we're thinking of his wife and twin boys. all right, demarco. we have the potential u.p.s. strike that could up end shipping and cause the economy millions. it could come as soon as next week if an agreement is not reached. our senior national correspondent steve osunsami is tracking the latest. good morning, steve. >> reporter: good morning, robin. one good sign is that the teamsters and u.p.s. resume negotiations today. but if they cannot come to agreement within a week, there could be a strike and the

results could be catastrophic. u.p.s. stores like this one directly behind me would have a tough time prompt promiing deliveries. u.p.s. delivers every day in the united states 18.6 million packages. companies big and small rely on them to do their business. about 340,000 workers could walk out if this happens which would make this the largest strike against the single employer in u.s. history. u.p.s. is already talking about having managers and people who aren't covered by the contract driving trucks, but u.p.s. pilots, who are under a different agreement, already said they would respect this possible strike. the last time u.p.s. had a strike was in 1997. it lasted 15 days and the company lost hundreds of millions of dollars. experts say that if a strike happens next week and lasts even just ten days it could cost the u.s. economy more than $7 billion. we're hearing the issue is mostly about money. both the teamsters and u.p.s. agree their workers need a raise.

sources tell us though the question is over how much. robin? >> hopefully a resolution can be reached. all right, steve. thank you. linsey? the social media battle is heating up. tik tok has entered the chat. the popular video sharing app just debuted a new feature taking aim at twitter. elizabeth schulze has the latest on it all. >> reporter: good morning. this is part of a heated competition between social media companies trying to become a one stop shop for their users online. tik tok, the popular video app with 150 million users just in the u.s. is now launching this text feature. the company says it will allow creators to share their stories, poems, recipes and other written content. it sets up a showdown with other apps centered on tech posts, including the og twitter, which is now rebranded x in yet another major change by its owner, elon musk.

so let's dive into it. when we break records for consecutive heat, it's usually by a day or two and we're always kind of amazed by that. in el paso, we will easily double the record, meaning breaking it by weeks, if not more. that's what makes this different. all-time record heat in italy yesterday. those records go back to the 1700's. here's what they're saying. not only virtually impossible without human induced climate change, but also summers, for now, 10% more chance of having a summer like this because of human induced climate change. in europe 6.7% on a given summer or given july, that will see this in the desert southwest. also, just a quick look. another group that does this helps to see how many more 110 plus days we can expect with moderate emissions or high emissions. there's your numbers. that's the big picture. let's get your local weather.

we'll tell you about sales tack holidays and when they're coming to your state. right now the long island serial killer case. officials are digging up the suspect's back yard. we have more from erielle reshef. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, george. you can see the mobile command center set up behind me. authorities have been scouring this property inside and out, including a vault full of guns. they've also been using a back hoe to dig up evidence in the back yard, all trying to piece together whether any of the victims were killed here. this morning the investigation into suspected gilgo beach serial killer rex heuermann intensifying. police seen using a back hoe to dig up the back yard of the new york home where he lives. ground penetrating radar helping them zero in on specific areas. forensic technicians also on the scene, taking pictures and removing potential evidence. >> still an active crime scene. i will say that we will go into every single crevice to make sure there's not something that

we missed. >> reporter: investigators working on a theory that the suspect, who was an architect, husband and father, may have committed at least one murder here. >> shock. now it's like, oh my god. the victims, their families, the suspect's family. living so close by, you never thought of it. >> reporter: authorities also correcting false reports that he had a sound proof room in the home, instead saying he had a vault secured with a big iron door. >> there is a vault where there were numerous guns. >> reporter: prosecuors say he owned 200 fire arms. he has plead not guilty to the murders whose bodies were found on long island's south shore in 2010. their bodies were found on long island's south shore in 2010. investigators say two formerly incarcerated sex workers confirmed heuermann contacted

them a few years ago but they never met. >> about 300 or 400 women that were attempted to reach out to, to see if any have ever come in contact with mr. heuermann. we also want to see if anyone's come in contact with him so that we can see a pattern or where he may have been. >> reporter: heuermann's wife of 25 years filing for divorce last week. investigators say phone records show she and their two children were not at home at the time of the killing. the family's attorney calling this a devastating time in their lives. and police commissioners have said that this investigation has been fruitful and they expect investigators to wrap up their search of this home by later today or tomorrow. george? >> okay, erielle. thanks. now to carlee russell, the alabama woman who claimed that she was abducted and went missing for two days now says it was all a hoax. janai norman is here with that story.

>> good morning. it was all made up. after so much speculation, police saying they couldn't corroborate her story, her parents and boyfriend speaking on the impacts of the speculation that carlee russell, it's what so many suspected, completedly fabricated. this morning an elaborate kidnapping story that made national headlines for days now officially dismissed as a hoax. police reading a new statement from 25-year-old carlee russell's lawyer. >> my client did not see a baby on the side of the road. my client did not leave the hoover area when she was identified as a missing person. my client did not have any help in this incident. this was a single act done by herself. >> reporter: russell's story began on this alabama highway when she called 911 to report a child walking alone. >> okay. >> what is he wearing? >> it's a white t-shirt. doesn't look like he has any pants on. looks like a diaper. >> reporter: when police showed up, russell was gone, her car left behind.

two days later, she returned home on foot, claiming she'd been abducted by a man and a woman and was able to escape. but suspicions were quickly raised when police revealed she had done google searches for amber alerts and the movie "taken" before her alleged disappearance. >> the sad thing is that, again, there were so many people involved, took this thing very, very seriously. >> reporter: overnight her former boyfriend who initially released a statement supporting her came out with a new statement saying, quote, we are disgusted from the outcome of this entire situation. i strongly feel exactly like you all, blindsided with carlee's actions. authorities are now considering whether to charge russell and calculating how much this hoax cost them in resources. her attorney says that she's asking for prayer. guys? >> all right, janai, thank you very much. we need to acknowledge the police there in alabama, how they took it seriously from the very beginning and even when

there were red flags in her accounting of what happened, they never made accusations. they allowed her to come forward and to admit that it was all a lie. >> it is so unfortunate, considering that we all know black women and girls, when they go missing, just don't get the coverage. so when you have people who do cry wolf, it feels like a set back. >> and the black community has really spoken out against that. just what you said, and feel that way. all right. janai, again, thank you very much. now the deadly bear attack near yellowstone national park. a woman was found dead along a hiking trail. this morning her parents are speaking exclusively to abc news. eva pilgrim is here with that. >> being attacked by a bear is incredibly rare. this woman's family saying she hiked regularly. she knew what she was doing. this morning they say she died doing what she loved. this morning the parents of the woman officials believe was killed by a grizzly bear near yellowstone speaking out. >> she wasn't out somewhere she shouldn't be. it was a well traveled trail

that a lot of people hike. >> another hiker just happened to come by and found her. >> reporter: amy adamson, an avid backpacker, had recently started work nearby and was out for a morning hike on the popular butter milk trail, which is now shut down. >> every morning she'd get up early and she'd walk, hike or run. every morning. she just was almost in heaven. so she died doing what she loved. doing what she loved doing. she loved it there. >> reporter: montana fish and wild life officials say adamson's wounds were consistent with a bear attack and found cub tracks on the ground where she was found saturday. experts say grizzly bear or brown bear populations are on the rise in the u.s., partly because they're a threatened species and are protected. but that means more human interaction. >> just to put it into context,

attack. this is a significant issue. and it is a medical emergency. >> all right. so what should we look for? what are the symptoms? >> well, listen. i think the most important thing for people to understand is that, yes, it can happen to young people, particularly women on birth control, hormones, after surgery, if they sit at a desk job, prolonged travel or immobilization. in terms of the science and symptoms, if you're talking about the leg, it's usually some focal tenderness or redness or swelling in the back of the leg, in the calf. if you're talking about a clot in the lung, shortness of breath, cough, chest pain worse with breathing. you can see rapid respiratory rates, decreased objecting general saturation. this could also be a symptom attic. this is personal for me. my daughter had one two years ago. >> my brother as well. so scary. tori kelly, only 30 years old. >> awareness is important. >> we are wishing her nothing but the best. thank you, dr. jen. over to robin? >> thank you, both. sales tax holidays. with parts of the country just a

few weeks from the new school year. eva pilgrim is back with how to get these extra back to school savings. i said that you would be back. but what is this holiday that you speak of? >> this is that magical period of time, i'm going to show you all kinds of graphics. when many states remove sales tax from certain types of items. often the tax free benefits are limited to a single weekend, but in some states it goes longer and varies by location. not every state has one. just a warning, while you may not have to pay state sales taxes, in some places you have to pay city or local taxes. either way it's like boosting your deals with all the back to school deals out there. >> why are you so far away? where can we find these savings? >> we have a lovely map. the first ones start really soon. over the last couple weeks in july you can see here. florida, mississippi and tennessee offer their sales tax holiday weekend. florida's continues into the first week of august. then that first week of august

we're inside tropicana field. i just ran up here. we're at the touch experience, where families, kids can come up here, learn about the ray, the actual animal inside the stadium. this is all thanks to the florida aquarium. i'm here with brett durda. these are the same ones in the tampa bay. >> they're local from our back yard. >> how do you care for them? now that they're not in the back yard but in the stadium? >> it's a little different here in the stadium. we're going to hand feed them. we know them all separately. we want to see how much they eat. we also want to maintain their body condition, give them good well being. >> i know i go under. >> perfect. >> got it. thinking about how people come in here. this is maybe the first time they have ever acted. it's a really beautiful experience. it also has enrichment. you do a school for the sting rays.
