brinkley, abc 7 news. larry: elsewhere across the country, roughly 40 million americans are sweltering under heat alerts. a heat dome that has been stationary over the southwestern u.s. is on the move. it is headed eastward. parts of the midwest and east coast could see their hottest weather of the summer this week. phoenix currently seeing its 26th consecutive day of temperatures in excess of 110 degrees. the city has not been below 90 degrees in 15 days. >> we have hot summers every year. this one is a little bit more exceptional because it is a longer duration of the triple digit heat. larry: that intense heat has proved to be deadly for investigators are looking into the deaths of two women who were hiking in triple digit las vegas heat. the national parks have reported at least five heat related deaths. kristen: bay area is being spared from those triple digit temperatures thanks to our friendly fog.

. this live book at the golden gate bridge shows it is still fairly socked in. that is the way we like it -- like it. larry: as i was driving over the bay bridge, you could see a marine layer that looks so thick and inviting. >> yes. now that the heat has moved out of the bay area, our marine layer is deepening and becoming more inviting. and spreading more widely across the region. we are feeling the cooling effect now. here is a look at our current temperature readings. we have a few inland areas with readings in the low to mid 90's. this will be the last day of temperature readings in that range. one reason is the friendly marine layer. we have crazy conditions at the coast. nice cooling onshore flow with guests up to 30 miles an hour at sfo. let's take a look at the advancing marine layer. overnight, it will reach across the bay and far inland. 9:00 tomorrow morning, mid morning hours, it will be with us. it will not have retreated to the coast. tomorrow's highs will be in this

range, high temperatures for wednesday, low to mid 80's inland. one or two inland locations like antioch might reach 90. as you look further to the forecast, thursday, cooler. inland highs in the mid 80's. we have nice refreshingly cooler weather, as the remain nation is dealing with this dangerous and potentially deadly spread of excessive heat. i will have more on our accuweather 7-day forecast in a few minutes. kristen: thank you. richmond's fire chief is facing public criticism from his own department. this week, the richmond firefighters union, local 188, took a no-confidence vote against fire chief -- the fire chief. the union accuses the chief of not doing enough to address low staffing issues. it also states that he is regularly absent from his office and from city council meetings. montoya says that has cause the department to lose funding. we reached out to chief montoya for comment. he has not replied.

we did get a statement from the richmond mayor. he writes, climate change is here, and well supported healthy firefighters will be essential in this fight. i trust our city manager to tend to this issue effectively. larry: a new bill from a south bay assemblymember haney's to make life easier for drivers and pedestrians. the goal is to try to stop traffic deaths. abc 7 news southbay reported dustin dorsey explains how visibility can be increased by decreasing parking in high risk areas. reporter: walking, driving, almost anywhere continue to be increasingly dangerous activities. in san jose, there have been six deaths from traffic crashes. five people were riding bikes when they were killed. >> california's pedestrian fatality rate is 25% higher than the national average. we are seeing an increase in pedestrian fatality, and more

traffic collisions. report member believes those numbers could decrease by increasing vi he has authored a bill that would set a standard no parking area along the approach side of intersections or crosswalks, making it easier for pedestrians and drivers to see, like shining a light on crosswalks. . that's why this measure is known as daylighting. >> whether you are a driver, bicyclist or pedestrian, you don't have to peek or even chance a not look when there could be danger incoming. reporter: he experienced this when we attempted to cross a street where a truck is cross -- was parked at the crossing and the driver saw us at the last minute. he says the no parking zone will be 20 feet from the crosswalk to the closest car if passed. about the side of a ford f-150 truck. >> when vehicles are approaching a intersection and a person has stepped into the crosswalk but they are being blocked from view, that can put them in a position of danger. reporter: the city's dot has implemented daylighting in

certain areas, but he wants this across california to save lives and an effort to get traffic deaths 20. >> by increasing visibility, those are increased -- those are fixable solutions for these big problems. that is why it is important to have daylighting and save lives. this is an infrastructure problem, and where giving it a solution. reporter: because there are only a few steps left before the bill gets signed into law by governor newsom. dustin dorsey, abc 7 news. kristen: school districts in the bay area are aware of an issue with chromebook's. those are the devices used by many schools during the pandemic because they are relatively inexpensive. problem is the operating system in the old chromebook's is set to expire in the not so distant future. senior education reportedly a melendez is in the newsroom with what school districts are planning to do. reporter: i spoke to two districts. they told way so far, it has not been an issue.

but they know it will be. we are talking about the automatic software updates on those chromebook's that will eventually expire. in april 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic, a new way of teaching was unavoidably introduced. these devices will be a student's entry into an online classroom. that was leading in 2020, reporting on the massive distribution of chromebook's throughout the san francisco unified school district. >> we delivered about 40,000 devices. within the first few months to ensure all students can access their learning online. reporter:reporter: here is a thought. at some point, those old chromebook's will expire. here is how i know. every chrome os device gets regular oak dates from google, until it reaches update expiration date. when that happens, the automatic software and security updates will no longer be provided. there is a problem with that. >>. being able to update is a huge problem.

reporter: that is the associate professor of educational leadership at cal state university east bay. here is what google told us. since 2020, we now provide eight years of automatic updates, up from five years in 2016. many districts are using the 2016 operating system. >> having access to a laptop, having access to regular wi-fi, internet capability, is absolutely essential to have access to a quality educational experience. reporter: the solution is to upgrade by purchasing a new device. sfusd said they will continue to provide devices if the oldham -- older models have expired. >> it is determined a replacement devices needed, we can work with the family individually to see what can be done. reporter: another problem is that thousands of devices that will eventually have to be recycled. google also told us they are building pulsed -- postconsumer

kristen: time for consumer news. larry: michael finney is here with a look at the headlines on the economy. >> how you guys feeling? larry: on the positive side. >> people are happy. it seems americans are feeling good about the economy. consumer confidence is at its highest level in two years. that according to business research group the conference board. the index measures american's feelings about current economic conditions in their outlook on

the future. analysts say the increase in consumer confidence comes from accommodation -- a combination of slowing inflation and a strong job market. the federal reserve is is -- is expected to raise interest rates tomorrow in an effort to continue slowing inflation further. if you are the owner of a dream cloud mattress, you could be owed money. the ftc is making the company pay after it falsely claimed the mattresses were made in the usa. anyone who bought the mattresses during the time of the false claims will get a claim notice from the ftc that you can apply for reimbursement. norton has launched a new app that promises to spot a scam. the company, known for its antivirus software, is rolling out the genie app. norton says it can analyze the content of emails and text messages and compare them to known scams. if it flags an alert, it makes

recommendations on what you could choose to do next. the genie app is available now through apple's app store and norton's website. it will be available for android later this year and is free on all platforms. i assume it looks for common misspellings. they are getting worse again. have you noticed? larry: you can spot a scam that way. but the fact that they are offering that for free, that's awesome. thank you. kristen: new developments, ups and the teamsters union have reached a tentative deal on a new contract today. that means the looming strike has been averted. the contract covers more than 340,000 ups workers nationwide. a labor stoppage could have started as soon as next week. experts say it would have crippled u.s. supply chains. >> it is so great for the economy. this has avoided a lot of price increases that could have triggered, because of shipping delays and increase of shipment cost and things like that. kristen: the two main issues

involved safety and pay. the teamsters general president says the agreement does not require a single concession, and says the contract sets a new standard in the labor movement, raising the bar for all workers. also today, fedex rejected a deal that included a 30% raise and a 30% boost in pension benefits. it is unclear what the major union objections are. the union says it is going back to the bargaining table. larry:larry: more union news. health-care workers picketed at kaiser facilities, part of a statewide day of action. tens of thousands of workers are calling on kaiser to provide more staffing to ensure proper patient care. >> we want to make sure they give us the proper healthcare and proper staffing we need so we can provide good quality care for our patients. our patients are suffering. we are not only suffering that our patients are suffering and we are tired of it. larry: the contact for kaiser workers including lab tax,

>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7 news. >> in our efforts to build a better bay area, we are constantly looking at solutions and the roadblocks solving san francisco's homeless problem. despite tireless cleanup efforts, many are still really frustrated with the slow progress. >> dion lim joins us. you were there for the cleanup effort. >> i did, and it is tireless effort by multiple agencies. they are engaging with the un-housed offering services daily. those i spoke with said there's a reason why it feels like the roadblock is holding them back. >> along with tents and piles of debris,

francisco department of emergency management and coordination with the healthy three's operation center are working to provide services to the roughly unhoused people in the city. half of which are already in shelters. >> in 2023, we have already sheltered more than 1000 people. every day we are out here. >> brittany brandon has been with the healthy streets operation center for five years. she and her colleagues partner with other outreach teams and first responders to hand out resources, sanitize and provide education to the unhoused. the hope is they will accept shelter. >> overall, we can probably get 20 to 25, which is really good. we have different resources parade sometimes it is safe sleep, a tiny home. >> the outreach team has spent eight years building trust with those on the streets. and understands frustrations of those such as business owners along willow street which abc7 has reported on.

>> just part of the work we do, it takes time. it is not something that can happen at the snap of a finger. it needs to continue to be worked on. >> maybe the sixth we will get them to take resources. >> one of the latest is an injunction brought forward on the coalition of homelessness. they alleged practices relating to encampment cleanups violated the rights of the unhoused, meaning the city can't enforce certain laws such as sleeping on public property. >> it prevents us from cleaning the streets as fast as we used to. >> while they can ask the unhoused to move, it is not mandatory. >> if someone refuses shelter, refuses to move, there is little that can be done. we believe city attorneys office believes this injunction is overly broad and hampers the city's ability to address homelessness. >> in the meantime, the continued outreach seems to have worked on anthony, who accepted a tiny home.

more and more young adults in china are quitting jobs or skipping the traditional job market. to make them. this is according to a bbc report. this is a move fueled by record high employment and professional burnout. in any case, it is a worldwide trend. many full-time children say this is a temporary role giving them time to relax, and find a better job. i'm just going to speculate that would not go over well in the kristen sze household. kristen: no. i'm not paying the kids. they've got to pay me. first of big problem with yourh being unemployed. a lot of discontent among young people.
