who is facing charges in the murder case of another young girl. ama: the community is eager for closure. reporter: it's a case that's been unsolved for over 30 years. in december of 1991, amanda vanished while riding her bike in fairfield. it's a case we've been following ever since. a nearby homeless search 2001. >> they are going to investigate under a house that was a couple doors from where i lived. they didn't give me names or addresses or anything else. there's always going to be hope. reporter: the disappearance lives on in the memories of many on the community. >> it's a very big deal. if you went to any neighborhood in fairfield, you would talk to people who remember it. reporter: a possible new lead. the police department saying they are following up on campbell's case once again. the reason police say they are re-examining the case isn't

because of anything that happened in the bay area. it's because of developments that happened thousands of miles away in pennsylvania and georgia. that includes the arrest of this man, david sandstrom. he currently lives outside of atlanta. he recently admitted to killing an eight-year-old pennsylvania girl in 1975. >> this man is evil. he killed this poor eight-year-old girl he knew and who trusted him. reporter: he then moved here to california. from 1990 to 2005, he was the pastor of the fairfield christian reformed church, a short drive from where campbell went missing. >> everybody was scared. everybody was perfect -- protective of their children. everybody held them tighter. reporter: police will be looking to see if he could have been involved in the case. in the meantime, neighbors just want the mystery to be over. >> this family needs closure. it's been 32 years.

reporter: tim johns, abc7news. dan: i man is dead after being killed by san francisco police. ama: san francisco police say the incident started when officers tried to arrest a man. police haven't said what it was for but that's when sfpd says another unrelated man approached the scene and two officers arrived in patrol car to address that man who appeared to be armed. it was then when at least one officer opened fire, delivering fatal shots. >> we are not specifying that item that was seized from the scene. as i stated, the second appeared to be armed with a firearm. how it was displayed or how it was seen, we are not specifying at this time. dan: police will hold a community town hall within 10 days to share more on the case. there were shots fired on an

east bay freeway for the second day in a rail. today it happened at highway 24. the seeds shut down the freeway for half an hour while officers look for evidence. both cars involved in the shooting fled the scene. the chaos caused a third vehicle to cross. -- crash. it's not clear if the cars exchanged gunfire or if one shot at the other. ama: a naked woman got out of a car near a bay bridge toll plaza and fired a gun. no one was hurt. the chp says there were 30 freeway shootings in the first four months of the year. dan: our neighborhood safety tracker is available to give you the full picture of public safety where you live. the interactive tool shows you a wide range of data for san francisco, oakland, and san jose. ama: to how up weather-wise for thursday. dan: sandhya patel is here with

conditions across the u.s.. the press secretary says the president will also announce new funding for weather forecasting and clean drinking water. the town of paro wiped out by flooding earlier this year is moving on from emergency response to a long-term recovery plan. the state budget allots $20 million for these efforts. the monterey county board of supervisors held a meeting to establish a recovery committee focused on how to spend the funds. dan: we are seeing quite a shakeup when it comes to the look of san francisco. some flagship businesses have closed or rebranded. others have taken down their signs and cleaned down their spaces. j.r. stone caught up with the mayor who says there is still demand to be in the city. reporter: this is a site that no one likes to see, moving crews taking items out of what was just weeks ago the old navy store on market street in san francisco.

the westfield shopping mall signage taken down in recent days after the mall operator bailed. twitter took down their sign for a branding revamp. a changing look noticed by terrorists. >> as i walk the streets in san francisco, very sad. reporter: leslie once spent time in the presidio as an army nurse. she is visiting from north carolina. >> it's a catastrophic feeling. when i walk the streets, icy only two buildings are still alive. reporter: i was inside this johnston and murphy just three weeks ago shopping, and now the sign says, we are close. the mayor says there are companies looking to come to san francisco. >> we have 10 ai companies looking for 800,000 square feet of space in san francisco. so we have a lot of things happening.

reporter: speaking at a party wednesday night, london breed referenced the challenges the city dealt with after the double deck embarcadero freeway was damaged in the 1989 quake. >> look at how we took a tragedy and a challenging situation and created an opportunity to bring people together. that's what we do and san francisco. reporter: it's not all doom and gloom in the city by the bay. world-class attractions like cable cars, quick tower, and alcatraz can only be found here. well-known stores like macy's and apple have stayed. some say that no matter what businesses do, they love san francisco. >> i'm weary about coming but we haven't experienced anything negative or bad or concerning. it's been a great experience. reporter: the mayor says, we are changing as a city. now hope that that change will be accepted and welcomed by the

dan: a dramatic turn of events. a plea deal involving hunter biden fell apart today. he was expected to plead guilty to misdemeanor charges for failing to pay taxes in 2017 and 18 and enter a pretrial diversion program to avoid jail time for a separate gun charge. instead, he pleaded not guilty to the charges after the judge asked if the deal was constitutional in granted him immunity. >> he thought he was walking away clean with this deal but the judge asked him questions where there wasn't an agreement on what he's actually giving up. he thought he was walking away with less liability. the prosecutors were holding over him. dan: both parties have expressed a desire to move forward with the deal. the judge has requested additional briefings from them in the next 30 days before

deciding next steps. ama: mitch mcconnell says he's fine tonight after a health scare at the capital. the kentucky republican suddenly froze up for about 20 seconds. john barrasso checked on him and led him back to his office. his office declined to answer any other health questions. he was treated for a concussion in march after a fall and went to an inpatient recovery program. dan: certainly alarming. a push for the federal government to take ufo sightings more seriously. ama: three former workers testified today about their encounters with what we now call an identified aerial phenomenon. >> where they human or nonhuman biologics? >> nonhuman. that was the assessment of people with direct knowledge on the program. dan: all three witnesses were

sworn in at a house oversight committee hearing. they urged the government to be more transparent about their operations. the pentagon says they are investigating more than 650 cases but have found no evidence of extraterrestrial life. ama: a retired naval pilot said that he encountered a uap off the coast of san diego in 2004. he described it of -- as an existential threat to the survival of the u.s.. >> the technology that we faced was superior than anything that we had. you could put that anywhere. ama: more uap's could be reported if pilots weren't concerned about losing their jobs. dan: interest rates went up today to try to slowdown historic inflation. american borrowers are still feeling the effects. today's increase makes the federal reserve benchmark lending rate the highest it's been in more than two decades. rates have been increasing since march of last year, causing margaret -- mortgage rates to

double. higher interest rates to benefit those who save. interest rates could rise again as early as september so we could be a while before americans see borrowing costs come down. ama: the fda is ramping up efforts to evaluate a pill for treating postpartum depression. the pill has been granted a priority review designation. the fda will quickly devote resources to studying the drug because of the potential significant benefit for postpartum depression patients. results show the drug greatly improved symptoms. >> what we saw was that as early as day three, we significantly decrease in depressive symptoms and the women who took it versus those taking placebo. ama: experts say roughly one in seven women can develop postpartum depression. the fda could decide as soon as

august 5. dan: the actor and wider strike -- writer strike seems to have no end in sight. a major political name has decided to step in. we saw supporters of the union hold a rally outside city hall. the chronicle reports governor newsom has contacted all sides of the actors and writers strikes to try to negotiate a deal. his office is no party has taken up his offer so far. actors and writers are fighting for residual payments for streaming service content as well as the effects of artificial intelligence on the industry. ama: let's get a check on the weather. we are getting closer to the weekend. dan: sandhya patel is here with the full forecast. sandhya: temperatures came down. as you can the natural ac helped drive temperatures down anywhere from five to 10 degrees. low 60's to low 90's today.

if you liked this pattern, tomorrow, we will keep the numbers going down in our inland communities. most of you are running between five and 10 degrees cooler. 50's to 70's. you have to get well inland in places like brentwood or ukiah to get a 70 degree reading. quite the opposite though. see surface temperatures, nowhere near where they should be. below average off northern and central california coast compared to back east. let's talk about the atlantic. right around manatee bay monday, the sea surface temperature was 100 degrees. i mean it's just a hot tub a sickly. we are talking about double the amount of where our sea surface temperatures are. this could be a global record. stay tuned. 90 plus degree sea surface temperatures. very warm waters. climate change contributing to
