arrested a pacifica man in connection with a deadly stabbing in san mateo. and now we're learning the investigation unfolded all because a person called police to report seeing the crime posted on facebook. good evening. i'm ahmad daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. police arrested 39 year old mark menshikov in connection with the stabbing. they believe he knew the victim. >> yeah, that victim has just been identified by the coroner as 41 year old claribel marie estrella of san mateo. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn has the latest on the investigation . >> sky seven was overhead wednesday afternoon as san mateo police responded to the hillsdale garden apartments near 37th avenue and edison street. it's just a few blocks from hillsdale mall. officers were there because someone had called the nye county sheriff's office in nevada to report a crime. >> they received a phone call about a facebook video that that showed a stabbing of a female. >> the sheriff's office pinged the phone number associated with the account that posted the video and it came back to a

large apartment complex in san mateo. >> due to the nature of the video, we dispatched a bunch of police officers over to address. >> police went door to door in searched for three hours. they eventually found a woman dead inside an apartment. two hours later they arrested a suspect for murder. police say they tracked and found the suspect because of his cell phone. they arrested him in his car in san jose. san mateo police say they knew the victim but they won't give other details. they say they don't have a motive for the stabbing. >> it's tragic, horrible. all of those things. it's tough enough when we lose someone in our community and then for someone to post a facebook video is just -- just hideous and horrible. >> that was -- that's disturbing. >> we heard from several neighbors. zina lives directly across from

the woman who was killed. >> i heard a scream the night before. >> it's a lot to know what you live here where somebody got murdered and it's not easy being the neighbor. not right across by 20 feet away neighbor. >> investigates are looking for more information information and want people to come forward if they can help. dan: new developments in a caught on video crime in a string of carjackings in oakland. police have arrested two mench and a police officer they say are responsible. they captured an attempt carjack a car on video. oakland police believe the people who did this also carjacked drivers in the thompson avenue, joia and thompson heights avenues. >> during our 11:00 a.m. midday show, we asked the oakland mayor

about that crime and other crimes. two shootings just blocks away overnight. in one police officers found a person shot to death. there have been no arrests. there was also a pregnant woman shot in the chest on international boulevard last night. she and her unborn baby are hospitalized in stable condition. here's what the mayor said about the incidents. >> it's outrages, not appropriate and has to come to a stop. i know the oakland police department, the city of oakland, we're united to solving these crimes and preventing them and hold those intercontinental accountable. dan: in less than an hour, a public safety meeting is scheduled to take place in oakland with alameda district attorney pamela price. organized by several neighborhood groups as an opportunity to hear from price about herb views on the justice

system, her views and relationship with oakland police. however, there are concerns that the meetings may turn political at officials recently filed paperwork in an effort to recall price. ama: we're hearing today from central police chief william scott on the hunter's shooting. police say the 41-year-old man who was shot and killed by police yesterday was shot and killed, which they recovered. the man was taken to the hospital but died of his injuries. dan: police departments throughout the bay area have gone the extra mile to try to recruit officers from. signing bonuses and extra pay to tv ads. san francisco is finally seeing some results but is it enough to make up for all of those who have retired or walked off to other jobs? our reporter attended academy training with the chief of police. >> this is something not seen in

town hall meeting here in the mission district, people in attendance said they wanted to see more police officers. the captain of the station told them to spread the word, join the police department. a few years ago the defund the police movement was seen as a new model for public safety. it may have had consequences when trying to recruit officers. >> the only definitive data there is that more social services, human services, those things reduce crime. >> the mayor says common sense knowledge is what will drive these new recruits. >> we're really grateful to have them be a part of it. >> abc 7 news. >> in santa cruz county, the path to recovery is well underway in the city of capitola. high surf nearly destroyed the city's iconic businesses earlier

dan: a group of east bay commuters is making a push to keep casual carpool alive. the decades old commuting option is on the brink of extinction and as tara campbell explains, it's going to come down to the power of the people. reporter: the signs are here but the carpoolers are not and joe is hoping to change that. >> we're trying to bring back casual carpool. reporter: the grassroots no-pay system born out of convenience for east bay commuters. drivers pick up passengers at multiple locations. two passengers into the much speedier and cheaper carpool lane. >> i was able to get into fran easy that way. that's why i loved it.
