rhiannon. and we begin with former president trump's response to the new charges. >> he faces trump coming out fighting, calling the new allegations ridiculous and claiming they're proof he's being harassed along with his family and his business. the new charges center on the classified documents recovered at trump's florida estate. meanwhile, another person has been charged in the case. abc's justin finch joins us with details. >> justin. >> andrea, good morning. after a chaotic day with his legal team, former president trump accused the justice department of harassing him. this morning, new legal woes for former president trump after the special counsel announced new charges over the alleged mishandling of classified documents. special counsel jack smith filing a superseding indictment yesterday , adding two new counts against trump, including an additional count of willful retention of national defense information and another count of obstruction of justice. trump had already been facing 37 counts of mishandling

classified information and obstruction. in addition to the new charges against trump, the head of maintenance at mar a lago, carlos de oliveira, is facing charges for allegedly making false statements to the fbi. prosecutors allege trump ordered de oliveira to delete surveillance footage from mar a lago that had been subpoenaed by the grand jury. the new accusations were revealed in the superseding indictment, claiming de oliveira and another employee used flashlights and pointed them at cameras in a tunnel near a storage room. >> and the detail here is fascinating. he talks about going and looking to where the surveillance cameras are walking with a flashlight through a tunnel where the storage room or those documents were helped and looking where the surveillance cameras are. and according to this indictment, de oliveira tells trump, employee for we don't know who that is, that the boss wanted the server deleted. trump has long denied any wrongdoing in the case and says

he was not holding a classified document. >> but in an audio recording being used as evidence, highly confidential secret. >> this is secret information saying he was simply putting on a show during that conversation telling abc news at the time it's bravado. >> if you want to know the truth. and in an interview with fox news overnight, trump accused the justice department of, quote, harassing my company. they're harassing my family and by far least importantly of all, they're harassing me. trump's allies are now rallying behind the former president, slamming the latest filing. >> it's just another bunch of garbage. i mean, you know, they're just going to keep indicting him. i mean, it's just you know, it's ridiculous. yeah. the double standard in this country is pathetic news of the additional charges in the documents case came hours after lawyers for trump met with members of the special counsel. >> ahead of a potential indictment in a different case, trump's alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020

election in the run up to january 6th, trump confirmed the meeting in a post writing. my attorneys had a productive meeting with the doj this morning, explaining in detail that i did nothing wrong. was advised by many lawyers and that an indictment of me would only further destroy our country. and trump has pleaded not guilty in the documents case de oliveira is due in court monday. >> andrew justin, thank you. >> meanwhile, the legal limbo for hunter biden is leading to tough questions for the president. when asked if he would pardon his son, the president did not answer, but the white house press secretary did respond with a firm no. for now, hunter biden has entered a not guilty plea on tax evasion and gun possession charges, at least until or if a new deal can be worked out. >> next, the extreme heat wave that has about half the nation's population under some sort of heat alert. triple digit temperatures are expected today from the desert southwest all the way to washington, d.c. this

morning. another round of record breaking heat is scorching most of the us, from california to maine, blistering temperatures have 150 million americans on high alert as july is on track to be the earth's hottest month ever recorded. and a new report says it may be the warmest month the planet has seen in 120,000 years. in el paso, texas, temperatures have hit 100 for 43 straight days, while phenix, arizona, has seen a scorching 110 degrees for nearly 30 days in a row. the extreme temperatures have officials in maricopa county bracing for the worst. the medical examiner's office bringing in a fleet of coolers to house the anticipated surge in heat related deaths similar to the height of the pandemic, saying their medical examiner's office is currently at 106% capacity. >> this is probably the worst july we ever had. >> the phenix area has confirmed 25 heat related deaths this month, but nearly 250 others are still under investigation. >> if you're out in the heat, you should be sweating. if all

of a sudden you're feeling hot and you're not sweating, it means your system is starting to shut down and the heat is gripping the entire northern hemisphere, fueling massive wildfires in greece. >> one fire engulfed a military ammunition site, triggering a massive explosion that sent this reporter running for cover. highs will likely remain near 115 degrees in phenix through saturday. we'll have a closer look at the forecast coming up in minutes. >> we're hearing from a passenger who was on an allegiant air flight that nearly collided with another plane in mid-air. as we mentioned yesterday, it happened over south florida. the allegiant jet flying to kentucky took evasive action at 23,000ft to avoid a private jet. that passenger calling it the scariest thing she's ever been through. >> you could hear people praying and people crying. anyone who had their window up pretty much put their window down because nobody wanted to look outside at what was around us. it was just get off this plane. >> a flight attendant was hurt

during the incident. the allegiant jet returned safely to fort lauderdale. >> the man accused of murdering four university of idaho students last year wants his indictment dismissed. but lawyers for brian kohberger claim prosecutors misled the grand jury about the standard of proof required for that indictment. if the judge won't dismiss the indictment, coburg's attorney attorneys want a new preliminary hearing to determine if the case should even proceed . >> and now to the emotional hearing in michigan, where a judge will decide whether a school shooter spends the rest of his life in prison. at the hearing, prosecutors played an audio recording of the teen shooter before the attack, saying he's going to have so much fun. this morning, a critical hearing resumes in a michigan courtroom for ethan crumbley. the 17 year old boy who killed four people inside his high school in 2021. a judge is hearing arguments over whether crumbley should spend the rest of his life in prison. when people versus ethan crumbley case number 2022 279 families of the victims sobbed

as prosecutors played previously unseen. surveillance video of the shooting. the judge ordered news cameras not to show the video, and the courtroom listened to recordings made by crumbley the night before the shooting. >> the name is ethan crumbley, aged five teen. and i'm going to be the next school shooter. >> prosecutors also showed a handwritten journal recovered from crumbley's backpack, who was 15 at the time of the shooting in the journal crumbley writing, i am fully committed to this now. i am going to prison for life. crumbley has already pleaded guilty to more than two dozen charges, including murder and terrorism. he sat in the courtroom not looking up as one teacher described calling her husband after she was shot. >> set my husband a text message that just said, i love you. active shooter. >> the defense argued crumbley struggled with mental health issues and had a troubled childhood with no friends. and they say sentencing him to life without parole is too severe.

but prosecutors insist the teenager should never leave prison, not just the number of children who died, but the way the defendant killed them. >> the amount of research and planning and preparation that went into it and the way he carried it out. >> crumbley's parents are charged with involuntary manslaughter, accused of buying a gun for their son and ignoring his mental health needs. they pleaded not guilty. >> one of the eagles founding members, randy meisner, is being remembered as an integral member of the hall of fame band. all along, at the end of the evening , my meisner sang lead vocals on the hit take it to the limit and nebraska native died in los angeles wednesday night due to complications from copd. randy meisner was 77 years old. >> time now for a look at your friday weather. brought out the tarp at the mets

and never lose hope and always fight. alicia navarro's mother posting this emotional video online. alicia who has autism, was 14 years old when she vanished in september 2019, leaving behind a note saying she would be back. at the time, alicia's mother feared her daughter may have been lured by a predator online. i do not know the details. >> i do confirm that she is my daughter. she is alive and she is safe. the teens disappearance is shrouded in mystery. >> the now 18 year old was last seen at her home in arizona, but recently wandered into a local police station in montana for nearly a thousand miles away from where she was reported missing. police releasing this facetime conversation with navarro. >> did anybody hurt you in any way? >> no, nobody hurt me. okay. because you know, our goal is we just want to make sure that you're safe. she is, by all accounts, safe. >> she is, by all accounts, healthy. and she is by all accounts, happy. >> authorities believe alicia's disappearance likely began as a
