we want to get right to the news. we're going to begin with the latest on the growing legal jeopardy for donald trump. special counsel levelled new charges against the former president in the secret documents case. also charged a new defendant a trump mar-a-lago employee. we have team coverage this morning. chief justice correspondent pierre thomas starts us off. good morning, pierre. >> reporter: george, good morning. in a surprise aggressive move the special counsel now accusing the former president of a cover-up. this morning donald trump hit with new charges by the special counsel alleging that he was trying to destroy surveillance footage which showed what happened to those classified documents that he was storing at mar-a-lago. trump now facing two new counts of obstruction of justice along with his current aide and a new player, mar-a-lago's property manager, carlos de oliveira. according to the new indictment, the two were allegedly concerned about a pending subpoena for surveillance footage as the justice department pressed the former president to return classified documents last year.

a critical point. keep in mind abc news has previously reported that prosecutors believe nauta removed classified documents allegedly at trump's direction. the special counsel suspected trump, nauta and de oliveira were trying to destroy the footage of that taking place. >> they're trying to do these things in a way that won't be detected. all of this gets to that intent element that they knew that what they were doing was wrong, that it was corrupt, which is what you need to show for obstruction of justice. >> reporter: the indictment lays out in stunning detail allegations of a cover-up. on june 22, 2022, the justice department notifies an attorney for trump about a draft grand jury subpoena requiring the production of certain security camera footage from mar-a-lago. a day later, according to the special counsel, june 23, jump

allegedly calls de oliviera. speaking for about 24 minutes. on june 24th, nauta is told trump wants to see him. nauta changes his travel plans and makes arrangements to go to mar-a-lago. june 25 the special counsel said nauta and de oliveira joined forces asking questions about the footage. it even alleges they walked through a dark tunnel with a flashlight to find the room where the documents were being stored and to look at how the security cameras were positioned in that room. then, according to the indictment. the stunning encounter on june 27 at 9:48 a.m. de oliveira walking into an i.t. office and meeting with a person described as trump employee number 4. de oliveira says their conversation should remain between the two of them. according to investigator, de oliveira asked how many days the server retained footage? trump employee number four said

45 days. then, according to the special counsel, de oliveira telling trump employee number four, the boss wants the server deleted. trump employee number four responds that he doesn't know how to do that. but de oliveira not taking no for an answer allegedly pressing, the boss wants the server deleted and allegedly asking, what are we going to do? jack smith is proving to be one of the most aggressive prosecutors i have seen in more than 20 years of covering doj. trump's campaign is calling smith deranged and the new charges harassment. but make no mistake, the special counsel is coming for him. george? >> that's right. obviously moving on several months. i want to bring in terry moran. as this was being sent up yesterday, terry, we also learned of a meeting between special counsels lawyers and trump lawyers on the january 6th case. >> that's right. there's a really important meeting, george. the meeting between special counsel jack smith and donald

trump's lawyers took place at the offices of the special counsel here in washington yesterday morning. lasted for about an hour, sources tell abc news. remember, donald trump received that letter from the special counsel earlier this month informing him that he was a target in the criminal investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 election and the attack on the capitol in 2021. these meetings are between prosecutors and defense lawyers are pretty standard in major investigations. it's the last opportunity for defense lawyers to argue against any potential charges. that's what trump's team did. trump himself took to social media and described what happened at this meeting as he was informed. he said, my attorneys had a productive meeting with the special counsel, with the doj this morning, explaining in detail that i did nothing wrong, was advised by many lawyers and that an indictment of me would only further destroy our country. he's making legal arguments there that he was advised by lawyers, and a political one.

trump added that his team got, quote, no indication that an indictment was coming, but all signs do point to an imminent indictment. it would be the third that trump has had so far. george? >> okay, terry. that's just the federal side. let's bring in dan abrams, jon karl. rachel scott is also on the campaign trail in iowa. dan, let me begin with you and these new charges. the breadth and volume of this new evidence is just stunning. >> when you think about what this case is about, big picture, right? it's about obstruction of justice. it's about refusing to turn over documents. and the key legally is showing he was doing it on purpose. that he knew that he was supposed to turn these over and he was intentionally trying not to. that's why something like deleting security footage becomes really important. if a jury were to believe that that was happening, it's hard to imagine anything but it was happening on purpose and it was happening for the specific reason of trying to hide

evidence. >> jon karl, this was not a sophisticated criminal enterprise. >> on one hand, it's incredibly brazen. to attempt to delete security footage the day after it's been subpoenaed. but it's incredibly incompetent, too. if you think about it, george, allegedly donald trump dispatches walt nauta down to deal with this. to mar-a-lago. he goes down, meets with the head of maintenance, meets with the i.t. guy at mar-a-lago. every move is documented, is captured. you see it in vivid detail, as pierre mentioned, walking through a tunnel with a flashlight. on the other hand, they're going to a place called the sound closet to have the conversation. you see the conversation back and forth. guess what? most of this stuff, most of this evidence is captured by the very security cameras they're trying to obstruct. >> dan, not only security cameras. it sure looks like this i.t. worker, employee number four, is a cooperating witness. >> absolutely. that's why they are referring to him as employee number four. he had the conversation with de

oliveira. he becomes a critical witness. so his credibility will become very significant here. expect him to be a central part of this case. >> jon, what are you hearing from the trump team? >> first of all, they were expecting yesterday to be faced with a possible indictment on january 6. this came as something of a surprise. they knew they had an issue with the security footage. they knew this was eventually coming. look. the entire campaign is about fighting these charges. it's basically not just a campaign to be president. it's a campaign to stay out of jail. >> his legal strategy is a political strategy. with that, let's go to rachel scott on the campaign trail in iowa. donald trump is heading there. >> reporter: it's back to the campaign trail for the former president. no cancelled plans. no rescheduled events. he's pushing ahead with a busy campaign weekend, touching down in iowa before holding a rally in erie, pennsylvania, tomorrow. look, you said it. his legal defense is the central

theme of his campaign. he has continued to deny any wrongdoing on the campaign trail. i asked him about having those alleged classified documents a few weeks ago. he told me it was all bravado and so far none of this has shown to have any impact on him politically. in fact, his support has only grown. he's still the front runner in this race. he's ahead now by roughly 32 points. his rivals clearly recognize the hold he has on the republican party. so many of them are hesitant to go after him directly about these indictments and federal charges. clearly, they are worried about peeling away the very voters they would need in order to clinch the republican nomination. they are all walking a fine line. >> thank you all very much. let's go to rebecca. >> thank you. now to breaking news overnight. kim jong-un showing off weapons to top chinese and russian officials. our global affairs chief correspondent martha raddatz joins us with the latest. good morning, martha. >> reporter: good morning,

a morning where we have a headline that july, and no surprise because we've had some of the hottest days by 20 some days on earth, on record. we now have that from the world meteorology organization that it is going to be the hottest july. let's talk about what that means. that 1.5 degree celsius degree threshold we're trying to stay away from we touched on for the first couple weeks. what i want to show you is what's going to happen more in the weather. that's the climate and globally. weather wise we still have extreme heat. we had our hottest heat indexes recorded in kansas city. they were 120 wednesday. 122 st. joseph, missouri. they're still in excessive heat warnings. george, the southwest where they had those rushing of their records in phoenix, el paso, will finally see monsoon flow and some cooling as we go into early next week. that does not mean we're going to be cooler overall. we've got a lot of summer left to go. >> okay, ginger. thank you very much. we're going to turn to concerns of lawmakers health after incidents involving two of

the most senior senators in washington. diane feinstein appeared confused before a vote, just one day after mitch mcconnell froze in front of reporters. elizabeth schulze is on capitol hill with the story. >> reporter: the uncomfortable moment during a committee vote here with senator feinstein is the latest incident sparking a debate about the health of lawmakers in congress and their ability to do their jobs. this morning senator diane feinstein is battling new questions about her age and health. during a senate committee meeting thursday, the 90-year-old california democrat appearing confused. >> i would like to support a yes vote on this. >> reporter: as feinstein begins reading an aide comes rushing to her side interrupting her and urging her to just vote on the defense spending bill. >> it funds priorities -- >> just say aye. >> okay. aye.

jumped out of their vehicles with their rifles cocked at him. he pulled out. >> reporter: then he called 911. >> right now i have police officers following me for a long time. i'm trying to figure out what i have done. i'm a truck driver. >> reporter: the problem, according to an incident report, the commercial truck rose was driving was missing a left rear mud flap. >> i don't know why they're trying to stop me. >> reporter: the officers threw stop sticks on the ground, spike strips intended to puncture tires and force the motorist to stop. this video capturing the subsequent moments when police caught up with rose as he exited his truck. fellow officers telling officer speakman multiple times to keep control of his dog. >> do not release the dog with his hands up. >> reporter: though rose did have his hands in the air, speakman released the dog. it first went toward other officers before turning and attacking rose. >> hey!

more of these jaws swimming around cape cod than any of us thought. in fact, the waters off the coast of massachusetts are one of the hot spots in the world. in the study, researchers counted 800 great white sharks visiting the region from 2015 to 2018 finding the number increased over the years. >> over the course of the past ten years white sharks have come back in cape cod. you see it on the recovery population. they're coming in really close to shore. >> reporter: just this week a cape cod beach was closed after life guards spotted a great white. the tracking app shark activity showing a dozen sightings. it's no wonder why. late summer and early fall are the busiest times for sharks in the area, when water temperatures are warmest. >> there is certainly no question oceans continue to warm and water temperatures continue to rise, things will start to change. it could very well be at some point in the not so distant future that white sharks are

obstruction of justice, along with his current aide walt nauta and a new player mar-a-lago's property manager carlos de oliveira. a critical point. keep in mind abc news previously reported prosecutors believed nauta removed classified documents from a storage room at mar-a-lago, allegedly at trump's direction. the special counsel believe the three were trying to destroy surveillance footage of that taking place. >> all of this gets to that intent element, that they knew what they were doing was wrong. that it was corrupt. >> reporter: the indictment lays out in stunning details allegations of a cover-up. on june 22, 2022, the justice department notifies an attorney for trump about a draft grand jury subpoena requiring the production of certain security camera footage from mar-a-lago. a day later on june 23rd, trump allegedly calls de oliviera, speaking for about 24 minutes. on june 24, nauta is told trump

wants to see him. nauta abruptly changes his travel plans for the next day. instead makes arrangements to go to mar-a-lago. june 25, the special counsel said nauta and de oliveira joined forces in mar-a-lago asking questions about the security camera footage. it even alleges they walked through a dark tunnel with a flashlight to find the room where the documents were being stored. and to look at how the security cameras were positioned in that room. then, according to the indictment, the stunning encounter on june 27th at 9:48 a.m. de oliveira walking into an i.t. office and meeting with a person described as trump employee number four. de oliveira then allegedly says their conversation should remain between the two of them then cuts to the chase, eventually

times square right now, back with our cover story, a gma investigation into sun screen as so many of the country experiences record heat. some bottles on shelves may be expired. eva pilgrim is here with what you need to know about it. good morning, eva. >> good morning, george. these crazy high temperatures making putting on that sun screen all the more important. there's a critical number that you should be looking at to make sure you're protected. in the sea of sun screen options, there are a range of spf's, but there is another important number you should be looking for. >> very important to check the expiration date. it's not something we're used to. we're used to checking the front of the bottle, spf, uva, uvb. broad spectrum, water resistant. we're not used to checking the back of the bottle. >> reporter: fda said sun screen usually expires three years after manufactured, sometimes even less because it can

star tick found in the eastern u.s., central and southern u.s. it's starting to pop up in other parts of the country. may be transmitted by other ticks. when the tick bites us, it passes along a sugar molecule that then triggers an allergic reaction because that same sugar molecule is also found in red meat, other meat and dairy products. it is a true immune reaction that can masquerade like a food allergy. >> we have to know signs and symptoms. what are we looking for? >> the same types of signs and symptoms as anyone with a food allergy can have. talking about things that could appear three to six hours after eating something that contains this molecule. hives, itching, particularly around the head or face. any gi or digestive issues, a cough, wheezing, low blood pressure. your job isn't to make the diagnosis for yourself. your job, if you have those symptoms, is to get medical
