morning. shayla: good morning and good news for the swifties out there. it will be a nice one. we had hot weather earlier in the week this weekend not so much. cool and comfortable in time for tailors with. we are seeing temperatures ranging from the 40's all the weight of the 60's in antioch. quite a range to start the morning. also a marine layer so you will see the cloud cover especially along the coast. foggy right now to start the day. we are talking about the 90's inland. the bay, nice and comfortable in the 70's. a cool down later this week. for now, i will toss it back to you. gloria: in the south bay it is day number two for swifties mania as tailors wraps up her bay area stop. nearly 70 thousand fans gathered at the levi's stadium for her

vta with an estimated 25,000 writers -- riders yesterday. if you are heading to the concert tonight, vta says it offers the best option to get there and if you don't know how it works, don't worry. the transit agency has ambassadors at many of the stations to help you out. a few things to know ahead of time, the stop for levi's stadium is the great american station. you can download the app to find the closest station and how often the trains are running. abc 7 talked with one family who forgot to buy a parking pass that they found out that public transit was a better alternative. >> we don't have to head into the traffic to get out of there so i'm glad we have this option. gloria: vta says train service will end one hour after the concert whether there is an encore or not. you will also need to keep track of other public transit schedules if you are planning to connect.

abc7news. gloria: developing news as people are gathering and traveling for their summer activities. california is seeing an uptick in covid-19 cases. according to new wastewater data, viral levels are rising across the state in areas like half moon bay, palo alto and sausalito. on our 3:00 p.m. show yesterday on getting answers the doctor told us vaccinations will be yearly in the fall and will be as necessary for the general public. >> who benefited the most in the spring? people who are older, over 65, and those on immuno presence and those with comorbidities.

overall rates of death are back where they were in 2019. a department of health spokesperson says the data shows an uptick that rates are still lower than in years prior. oakland police are looking for who is responsible for a shooting last night leaving one person injured. the incident happened around 8:30 p.m. last night near 19th and broadway. one person was shot and taken to the hospital. police say the victim was unsure where the -- where the shooting happened. the oakland branch of the naacp and a local church are calling for a state of emergency and oakland because of a crime. they wrote a scathing letter to city officials calling for more resources in hopes of ending the public safety crisis. community members say the crime spilling into setting neighborhoods even in broad daylight has reached a boiling point. >> they reached out to gavi newsom and he got the highway patrol to help them with

problems they are having. and we said we are having worse problems than san francisco. gloria: critics raised concerns about over policing but critics say the issue is the opposite. the mayor did not respond to our request for comments about this. happening in oakland, a community event to support crime victims and their families. the event is put on the oakland violence prevention coalition. one of the organizers made this hermit after she lost her son to gun violence in 2022. >> we are coming together after all of these years as a people to make our city safer for everybody. we cannot pinpoint each nationality. we have to do it together or it will never work. gloria: the family fun day in the park will be held in moss would park in oakland. there will be activities for the whole family including a petting zoo, food and drink as well as a

mornings. we are getting a live look from our camera in emeryville. the sunshine has risen. we will get a check of the forecast in a few minutes. it is a crisis in san francisco. the animal care and control says it is overwhelmed by the number of rabbit. it is asking for the public's help. we have -- we hole to find a source of the issue and what is being done. reporter: for her entire life allison has loved animals. >> they have different personalities. reporter: when she heard of pet rabbits being dumped in golden gate park she knew she had to help. she joined a group of volunteers to rescue the rabbits. allison said it was not -- it was easy to get the rabbits. she said it took her and the volunteers three days to get them all. >> they went all the way in

there. the rabbit was in the bush. i was the smallest. i had already netted one. reporter: this is not an isolated incident. karen control says they and other shelters in the bay area are overwhelmed by the number of rabbits coming in. >> domestic rabbits should not be dumped in the wild. they won't survive for long. reporter: to help with the overflow, rabbit adoption fees are being dropped and asking people to take one home. they don't want the rabbits to be put down. >> we do everything we can before we get to that point. luckily, we have good rescue partners. reporter: allison is happy the rabbits are safe and she hopes soon that they will find a forever home. >> provide them space, attention and the right food. we don't want people to take

them on and then dump them again. reporter: in san francisco, tim johns, abc7news. gloria: part of our work to build a better bay area is keeping our communities healthy. july is national minority mental awareness month. we spoke with the assistant professor in paulo alto university's department of counseling. she says research shows marginalized groups suffer more with issues of mental disorders. >> individuals backgrounds have been on the receiving end of experiences of racism and aggression. minority stress which is stress as a result experienced because of being a minority israel. it has a lot of short-term and long-term physical and mental consequences. reporter: pau is working on

breaking the stigma in providing or access to therapy. there is a new type of avocado that will hit the market in a couple of years. it was developed by agriculture scientists at uc riverside. >> this one has a smooth texture. it has a nutty flavor. it can sometimes be a little sweet. gloria: that sounds good. the seed was first planted decades ago. it has been through a long breeding process to achieve the perfect combination. growers will like the variety because it grows from a tree half the size of a usual avocado tree and it has a higher yield efficiency with more avocados and more profit and an easier harvest. people are in for a fun time in the north bay as we can with the

we talked about last weekend. we have some fog to start the morning especially along the coast, the bay. that will burn off as we head into the afternoon hours especially inland. we will continue to see the patchy fog through the afternoon along the coast. something to look forward to, a cooling trend next week. low average temperatures by the time we got through midweek. we just have to get through some warm days ahead. this afternoon, we still have a little bit of the marine layer along the coast. heading inland, sunny skies and warm temperatures. it will be a nice one. once again overnight we see that cloud cover move back in and the marine layer returns. it will be out there to start your sunday morning as well. still some cloud cover continuing to cling to the bay. wind speeds, calm to start

gloria: as the push to hire more police officers continues in the bay area, there is an emphasis on hiring more women. the san francisco and oakland police departments and the san francisco sheriff's office are aiming for 30% women by the year 2030. that is a pledge they made through the 30 by 30 nationwide initiative. one reason to focus on recruiting women, well, when out in the field, reports show outcomes involving female officers tend to be better. >> there tends to be less instances of uses of force. i have seen in many ways, they are better leaders. gloria: tracy of the police officers association believes the department needs to come up with more incentives to make joining more attractive to women, especially for those who are working mothers. one suggestion includes reliable childcare. several departments have gone the extra mile to recruit more officers. everything from signing bonuses and extra pay to tv ads.

san francisco is finally seeing some results. is it enough to make up for those who have retired or step -- stepped down? here is abc 7's lyanne melendez. lyanne: this is something san francisco police have not seen in recent years, a higher number of people going through the academy. these two classes have 34. in the past three years, there have been fewer candidates. >> the next class is going on pace to probably either meet or exceed where we are with this class, so that is why i am so encouraged. lyanne: mayor london breed addressed those in training as a symbolic gesture of support. still, we have to be realistic, it is hardly enough to replace the number of retirees or officers who have left. >> our goal, i wanted them to get younger people. 30 is a good number. it is way better than eight. lyanne: officer tracy was featured in a police unit ad,

encouraging people to join sfpd, at a time when there seems to be a push from some communities to add police. >> we should hire more policemen because policemen really come by and check on the seniors, and i think that is what we lack right now. lyanne: during a recent town hall meeting in the mission district, people in attendance said they wanted to see more police officers. the captain of the station told them to "spread the word, join the police department." a few years ago, the defund the police movement was seen as a new model for public safety and may have had consequences when trying to recruit officers. >> there is no definitive data that shows more police equals less crime. the only definitive data there is is that more social services and more human resources, those things reduce crime. lyanne: the mayor said commonsense knowledge is what will drive these new recruits. >> we have a job to do, and we have to get out there and do it.

president was notified he has a target in a criminal investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 election and the attack on the capital. a federal grand jury could vote as early as next week whether to indict donald trump on his alleged efforts to cling to power after losing to joe biden in 20 20. the former president has denied any wrongdoing in all cases. gloria: the fda approved -- it is a third over-the-counter version of naloxone which is used to reverse the effects of a note we -- opioid overdose. the manufacturer says it will be sold for $36. according to the fda there was over 105,000 deaths in february. a new housing option has offered hope and a new beginning for dozens of formerly unhoused

individuals. this in an petaluma has been transformed into studios. it is a 60 unit facility and it is a new supportive housing complex giving residents safety and stability. burbank housing and the city of petaluma purchased the property with state grants for $50 million. >> i've been out on the streets for about four years. i had no way of getting visitation with my son. now that i have a permanent house, i can get visitation with my child. this place has given me a gift beyond gifts. >> this is long-term housing, so they can stay as long as they want. the goal is for one day for them to move on from here. gloria: every room in the former hotel has a tv, kitchenette, and bed. still ahead on abc 7 mornings, safer streets. what could change on the roads as city leaders tried to protect traffic deaths in the south bay. we are getting a live look

for artificial intelligence jobs in the bay area. >> there are a lot of accounts of people moving back to the bay area to participate in the generative ai boom. i think a lot of this work is early-stage work, where you want to be directly in office. gloria: san francisco's chief economist says having ai companies move downtown will bring a boost to the area but it would take a lot of ai growth to take over all the empty office spaces. he says the city needs to tap into other industries to help downtown recover. a new bill from a southbay assembly member aims to make life easier for drivers and pedestrians on city streets in order to stop traffic deaths. abc 7's dustin dorsey explains how visibility can be increased by decreasing parking and -- in high-risk areas. dustin: walking, biking and driving almost anywhere continues to be increasingly dangerous activities. in san jose, there have been six deaths from traffic crashes this

month. five people were riding bikes or scooters or walking when killed. >> pedestrian deaths accounted for 49% of deaths in 2022 in san jose for pedestrians. california's pedestrian death rate is 25% higher than national average, so we are seeing an increase in pedestrian fatality and traffic collisions. dustin: alex lee believes those numbers could decrease by increasing visibility. he authored a bill that would set a standard no parking area in california on the approach side of intersections and crosswalks, making it easier for pedestrians and drivers to see, shining a light on crosswalks, and that is light it is known as -- and that is why this safety measure is known as daylighting. >> whether you are a driver, pedestrian, like writer, you do not have to dangerously peek or not look when there might be danger coming. dustin: we experienced this when we attempted to cross the street where a truck was parked at the crossing and a driver only saw us at the last minute. the assembly member says the

standard no parking zone would be 20 feet from the crosswalk to the closest car if passed about , the size of a ford f1 50 truck. >> if the vehicle is approaching an intersection and a person stepped into the crosswalk but they are blocked from view by a parked car, that can put them in a position of danger. dustin: the city's dot implemented daylighting in certain areas but the assembly member lee would like us across -- would like this across california to save lives in an effort to get traffic deaths to zero. >> by implementing daylighting and increasing visibility, those are easy, fixable solutions for these big problems that are resulting. that is why it is important to have daylighting and save many lives. this is an infrastructure problem and we are giving it a solution. dustin: the assembly member says there are only a few steps left before the bill is signed into law by governor newsom. gloria: you can enjoy santa clara county parks for free today. it usually costs six dollars per car but today there is no charge. the county says it is a way to thank the community for its support.
