>> gio: so much fun and excited for that. somara and our weather team also tracking the excessive heat stretching from coast to coast. nearly half of the u.s. population right now is dealing with scorching temperatures. something we're all too familiar with this summer. but we're going to start this hour with donald trump hitting the campaign trail just one day after a new charge was filed against him in that classified documents case. >> janai: the former president saying, neither an indictment, nor a conviction will stop his 2024 campaign. abc's rachel scott joins us live in des moines, iowa, with more on how trump is responding and what other republican candidates are saying about the charges. good morning, again, rachel. >> reporter: janai, good morning. two indictments, a new round of federal charges and former president donald trump is as defiant as ever. he's still the clear frontrunner in this race, but he does face new challenges in the coming months juggling a campaign schedule as he fends off federal charges.

this morning, donald trump back out on the campaign trail in iowa vowing to stay in the race as he faces new federal charges. >> but i will fight for iowa like no one else is going to fight. >> reporter: the former president now charged with not only mishandling classified documents, but trying to destroy surveillance footage to obstruct the investigation. that video has long been crucial to the special counsel's case. when prosecutors traveled to mar-a-lago last year to recover those sensitive documents, they spotted a surveillance camera outside the storage room. but when the justice department issued a subpoena for the material, prosecutors say trump schemed with his staff to destroy it. their alleged plan ultimately failed and prosecutors got their hands on that evidence anyway showing boxes being moved in and out allegedly at the request of trump. the former president has pleaded not guilty. his trial set to overlap with the republican primaries. >> they've weaponized the justice department and the fbi. >> reporter: trump crossing paths with 12 of his rivals in iowa this weekend including florida governor ron desantis. >> does trump best represent the

future of the republican party or is this all a distraction? >> if the election becomes a referendum on what document was left by the toilet at mar-a-lago, we are not going to win. we got to focus on what the people are looking for in terms of their futures. >> reporter: few candidates in that crowded field willing to go after the former president directly. the one that did, booed off the stage. >> donald trump is running to stay out of prison and if we elect -- [ booing ] >> i know. i know. i know. i know. listen, i know the truth. the truth is hard. >> reporter: notably not by the president's side, his close aide walt nauta who prosecutors say conspired with the former president in an attempt to destroy that video evidence. as for trump he's back on the campaign trail later today with a rally in pennsylvania. janai? >> janai: rachel, thank you for

that. now to new developments in that story of a nursing student who admitted to staging her own kidnapping triggering a 49-hour search effort now turning herself in to authorities. abc's ike ejiochi has the details on the charges she's facing. good morning, ike. >> reporter: good morning, janai. alabama prosecutors charging carlee russell with two misdemeanors for the 25-year-old's role in falsely reporting to law enforcement officers and falsely reporting an incident. each punishable with up to one year in prison if she's convicted. on the night of july 13th she called 911 from her car claiming she saw a child walking alone on the interstate. now, when police arrived all they found was russell's car along with her wig, phone and purse. but neither russell nor the child were there. now, her disappearance sparking that frantic two-day search. police and volunteers handing out flyers, searching the area, that is, until russell returned home on the night of july 15th claiming she was kidnapped and escaped eventually admitting that she made the whole thing up. now, the police chief saying

>> gio: welcome back to "gma." and it's christmas in july. the items to stock up on now to gift yourself a stress-free december coming up in our next half hour. >> janai: that is for the overachievers. really aspirational. now to our "gma" cover story and the drugs being used for weight loss like ozempic are making headlines again. abc news medical contributor dr. darien sutton is here with a reality check. good morning, dr. sutton. always love having you. so, there are reports of people experiencing so-called stomach paralysis. what is that and what should we know about the side effect claims? >> good morning, janai. stomach paralysis associated with these medications, ozempic and wegovy. one of the methods that these medications work is that they slow the rate in which food empties out of the stomach or have gastric delay helping with feelings of fullness and helping to suppress appetite. we see these isolated reports where some are suffering from stomach paralysis where food cannot empty out of the stomach.

it can be associated with symptoms of abdominal pain, bloating, acid reflux or gerd and severe nausea and vomiting and i've taken care of patients who suffer from this diagnosis. it is absolutely brutal. patients often come in with severe dehydration and electrolyte abnormalities and their symptoms are so difficult to control they have to be admitted to the hospital. in larger studies we have not seen an increased rate compared with those who use the medications to the general population. so we still have to wait and see if there's any identification of cause and effect, but it's important to acknowledge. >> whit: important information there. on a different topic there's also an investigation into a potential link between these drugs and suicidal thoughts. what can you tell us about that? >> well, in europe between the years of 2020 and july 6th of this month, we've seen increased reports, at least five confirmed cases of patients reporting thoughts of self-harm and suicidal ideation. now, again, similar to gastroparesis, we have not

seen an increased rate of these findings when comparing patients who use these medications to the general population. but the investigative probe is expanding on this because this would not be the first time we've seen diet medications associated with thoughts of self-harm. for example, certain oral medications confirmed and approved in 2014 have been labelled to have an increased risk of thoughts of self-harm. so i think it's really important to acknowledge this especially if you have a personal history or increased risk with your provider before taking these medications. >> gio: so dr. sutton, what is the bottom line here? >> the bottom line is these medications are wonderful. they can have wonderful effects and can reduce weight and help protect against diabetes and reduce cardiovascular risk factors. but overall i would advise patients acknowledge these possible risks so that they can make the best decision for themselves. they are not to be taken as simple over-the-counter medications and they are not to be seen as medications that can

71% of gen-z said they didn't know enough about their investments. >> education is the first step. but investing, again, you can learn how to do this much easier than you maybe thought you would be able to and start with $100, $200 but the key is time and just getting started. >> gens to technology and information that previous generations simply could have only dreamed of at their age. >> taxes and insurance. >> they're headed to instagram and tiktok and they are looking for ways to build a network, build a community and learn from people who have come before them. >> reporter: and, guys, experts suggest investing about 20% of your income. and, whit, this one shocked me, a recent survey found that the youngest generations are the ones more likely to save on a regular basis. whit? >> whit: interesting, that is a surprise. okay. we've been taking our notes. thank you, elwyn. let's send it over to somara theodore. another check of the weather out

there in citi field. good morning. >> somara: good morning, whit. yeah, it's getting pretty warm out here pretty early. it's going to be a hot day, not just for us, for the southwest as well. much of the country facing dangerous heat. as a result, national weather service offices around the country have issued heat warnings, excessive heat watches. take a look at the highs. in the southwest, triple digits into areas like little rock, 100 degrees. washington, d.c. hitting 96 degrees today and that heat continues for the next couple of days. you can see excessive heat moves into the gulf coast and into parts of the south. but in the northeast cooling down a bit into the 80s. that's a look at the weather across the country. let's look at what's going on

building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. >> this is abc7 news. >> good morning. i'm gloria rodriguez. california is seeing an uptick in covid 19 cases. new wastewater data shows viral levels are rising across the state. some areas seeing a spike include the bay area cities of halfmoon bay, palo alto, san rafael and sausalito. data also shows that san francisco has the largest covid swing in the state. a department of health spokesperson says despite the expected uptick, rates remain much lower than years prior. now let's get a check of your forecast this morning with shayla gerardin. >> hey, good morning. we have a warm weekend heading our way before a little bit of a cooldown comes. but next week for now, we're talking about the 90s inland 70s by the bay.
