all. stephanie: monumental eras tour the financial impact as the bay area stop boost the local economy. it is sunday, july 30. i am gloria rodriguez. as you get ready to start your day, we want to get a check of the forecast. shayla is with us with what you can expect. we've got a nice cool start to the morning. temperatures anywhere from the upper 40's all the way to the 60's. most of you in the 50's. we still have the onshore flow so i bit of a breeze. we will also see temperatures warming up this afternoon especially if you are heading inland. it will be warm are some areas but the silver lining is we are starting what is going to be a nice cooling trend heading our way. we do see quite a drop in temperatures. we will break it down in your

seven-day forecast but for now, back to you. gloria: we are following a fire burning right next to 580 on the altamont pass. you can see where it broke out a little after 7:00 p.m. last night next to north flynn road. it burned nearly 80 acres. it is 20% contained. in the east bay coming officials think a lawnmower started a 10 acre fire outside of martinez. multiple agencies responded to put out those claims which threatened homes yesterday. abc7news spoke with one woman whose white jeep was doused in pink retardant as she escaped. >> it was really tough. the fire was around the house, like 400 feet. by the time i took off the dogs, i could not see anything. >> very difficult terrain. this is a rural area so getting

here is very difficult. gloria: nobody was hurt and no homes were destroyed, but the battalion chief says it could have been a lot worse. he suggest mowing in the morning when it is cool because warm grass in the afternoon is more likely to start a fire. you can see where any wild fire is burning in california by using our online interactive wildfire track. it shows you the air quality so you can check to see if smoke is affecting the bay area. you will find it on abc7news.com. now a memorable weekend in the bay area. taylor swift's the eras tour is now over. we have been covering the big event and all the moments leading up to it. some of you exchanged friendship bracelets and walked out at levi's stadium. after breaking curfew for a second time last night, swift held another marathon show. we spent the day hanging out with swifties. >> it was glitter and for

officially ends next week in los angeles. the eras tour is excited to be the largest grossing tour of all time. we told you yesterday that swifties smashed the public transit record on vga this weekend. we are learning the agency saw more than 23,000 riders from friday nights show alone. it tops the former one day passenger record of 15,000 for the 2015 nhl winter classic in san jose. if you couldn't see the shows this weekend and you still want to, why not go abroad? analysis shows you might get a cheaper deal there. starting resale prices for the tour in the bay area average more than $1000, but if you can find a cheap flight, the passes for the global eras tour in places like mexico city, europe and australia are still available for well under $500. some of those locations including italy and japan either heavily restrict or ban

violence in 2010. she believes crime in oakland is reaching a boiling point. >> i was going to have a national night out this week and i canceled it because in the area i am, there was a shooting, a murder and a drive-by. cornell: friday night, one person was wounded at a shooting at 19th and broadway. police are looking for suspects. >> violence is growing in our communities and we have to work towards the proper resources are available. >> you don't know what the pain and what we have been through. cornell: emotions running high at a public safety meeting on thursday in oakland. the issue on everyone's mind, rising crime. a day after the oakland chapter of the naacp penned a letter asking for a state of emergency, the state chapter released this letter saying they are doubling down on that call because our community members are in danger. >> we need a state of emergency. cornell: according to the opd,

since january 2023, violent crime is up 15% over the same period last year. property crime has increased 20%. homicides are down 13% compared to 2022. burglaries are up 41%. and vehicle thefts have increased 50%. critics raised concerns about over policing. currently, the department is understaffed. community advocates say solutions are not easy but creating a safer city must begin from the ground up. >> a lot of the issue start from home. if the families would get together and talk a little bit more, i think it would curb a lot of the violence. cornell barnard, abc 7 news. gloria: neighbors are getting the chance to give their input on the next police chief. the police commission will hold a series of community forums next month. the first to our next saturday, august 5. one starts at 10:30 a.m. at the golden gate branch library. a second meeting starts at 3:00

video shows aircraft coming down, making an emergency landing. lifeguards and other people who were on the beach rushed to help pull the plane out of the water. witnesses said it is a relief the pilot is ok. >> it's going down, a plane is going down and it crashed! we also that up and there is the plane upside down floating in the water. >> all of a sudden, the guy swim out. wow, thank god he's alive. gloria: the pilot was the only person on board. the pilot blamed the crash on engine problems. in daly city city, firefighters rescued a hang glider from a cliff after he drifted off course and crashed into the ocean. the fire chief says the man was able to remove his parachute and make it to shore, but was hit by waves as he waited for help. fire crews pulled him up from their helicopter about one hour after getting the call. it happened that muscle rock. the man was injured and taken to

the hospital. for a second year in a row, the sonoma county fair is moving forward with a controversial wrestling show despite calls to cancel it. the event features wrestlers with dwarfism. according to the chronicle, disability rights groups wrote letters to the fair's os saying the show reinforces stereotypes and promotes exploitation of little people. critics say the name of the show also uses a derogatory term. in response, the fair changed its marketing of next week's event, calling the athletes short sleeve simpsons wrestling warriors. the sonoma county fair kicks off on thursday. today, bed, bath & beyond and buy buy baby are shutting their doors for good as part of their final day with open doors, stores are offering up to 90% off. the company filed for bankruptcy back in april. if you plan to catch a sale, it is best to call ahead because some locations already closed, and others like pleasant hill

and santa rosa are closing today. bed, bath & beyond is affected to live on through its online store in some form. youth leaders around the world are addressing climate change. yesterday, groups came together in silicon valley to make a statement. >> i'm just super passionate about climate change. i wanted to find a way to act. i wanted to be part of the solution. i think silicon valley and the summit provides a great platform. we invited a bunch of speakers, like professionals, government officials. we want youth to learn from the experts and brainstorm and take action. gloria: the youth climate action summit was held at cupertino. high school and college students got the chance to talk about meaningful strategies, as well as learning about careers related to climate change. in santa cruz today, the city of capitola is recovering after the storms earlier this year nearly destroyed nearby businesses and an iconic wharf.

there are plans to rebuild and enhance the wharf now. zach fuentes talked to city leaders about the plans that are underway. >> capitola wharf is not only the city's, but it is our county. it is unique to have a beautiful wharf in your city. it means everything to everyone here. zach: since early this year, the wharf has been closed to the public after the center of it was ripped out by high surf and storms. >> it was shocking. zach: extreme damage prompted a visit by president biden. since then, the businesses along the hard-hit esplanade have returned. beach tourists have also come back but the wharf remains closed. city officials are working constantly to make a big return. >> a new project called the capitola wharf enhancement project is underway. zach: a resiliency project has been underway to make the wharf's structure stronger. the enhancement project hopes to

take things further. >> that project focuses on what goes on our wharf to make it sparkle. zach: the city council plan to review preliminary plans thursday. while the resiliency project has received state and federal funding, the enhancing project has been spearheaded by local leaders. both projects are hoped to be finished by summer of 2024. locals have already weighed in. >> it has to have the charm of the current pier, but maybe with more to do, more attractions. zach: the city says some additions could include a fish cleaning station, shower for beachgoers, and more learning opportunities for kids. >> we are looking at keeping the iconic spanish-style with may be adding more color, some more opportunities for local art. zach: those who call capitola home are eager for their beloved wharf to return better than before. >> i feel like people will rise

to this and really utilize it in a way they never did before, with great appreciation. zach: zach fuentes, abc 7 news. gloria: shayla girardin is tracking the forecast. how is it looking this sunday? shayla: it will be a little cool out there by the beaches but if you are heading inland, we have another warm day ahead. not much to see out there yet. a very foggy start to the day, especially along the coast and the bay. we have the cloud cover to start off the morning. mild along the coast, a little bit warm for the bay, and inland, we will see a pretty hot day ahead. all of that will change by midweek. a nice little cooling trend to look forward to tuesday into wednesday before the temperatures bump up once again. this afternoon, a lot of that cloud cover will be about. a mix of sun and clouds inland. some fog along the coast. overnight, all of that moves and again so by monday morning, we

have a pretty widespread cloud cover to start off the day. again, some of that will taper off but by monday afternoon, we are talking about that mix of sun and clouds. we will continue to see over the next couple of days wind speeds. pretty mild for the most part. calm out there, but starting to see that wind already. fairfield will continue to be breezy into the afternoon hours in a lot of areas creeping up into the teens, but winds over 20 miles per hour. that will die down once we get into the evening hours but by tomorrow morning into tomorrow afternoon, we will see a return of those winds. it is the afternoon hours where we see the breezy conditions. highs today will be on the warm side of. inland, 90's for you. more mild along the bay. by the coast, nice and cool. 60's for you guys. half moon bay at 61. san francisco, 66. inland, fairfield and concorde

in the low 90's. same story for antioch. the breeze will be sticking around for the inland areas. lows tonight, a nice little break from the heat. 50's and 60's. antioch will be coming in at 62. concord cooling down to 57. again, warm today and tomorrow if you will be inland, but by the bay and coast, it will be cool for you. tuesday is when we see the temperature drop. 92, dipping down into the 80's. we have a couple days of cool air, below average temperatures. by the end of the week, we start to creep up again. overall, warm if you will be inland today, but temperature is not too bad. a nice cooldown comes our way midweek. gloria: thanks. still to come, prison transformation. we check it to see houston quit is being turned into a rehabilitation center.

gloria: good morning and welcome back. we are getting a live look outside right now from our tam cam. it is cloudy and a beautiful look as the sun is rising. what a gorgeous shop. we will have a look at your forecast coming up. this morning, we are getting a closer look at governor gavin newsom's plan to transform san quentin from a state prison to a rehabilitation center. tara campbell talks to those who are incarcerated about what the programs mean for them. tara: from the yard to the classroom. the goal is to transform san quentin from a maximum-security prison to a one-of-a-kind rehabilitation center. the state setting aside $380 million to invest in new buildings and training. >> we are learning how to code websites. this is one example of a website i built over the course of the last couple weeks. tara: willie johnson has been

here for more than two decades and says learning to code will serve him well. >> we are trying to learn new skills. tara: coding is one of a handful of educational and vocational programs at san quentin, and all of them have long wait lists. you are one of the lucky ones. i understand not everyone gets in. >> the waiting list is long. i was real fortunate. >> these programs only serve a certain number of people. so, we have waiting lists at san quentin and some of them are very extensive. it would be like going to disneyland but you never get to ride the rides. tara: tearing down this former furniture warehouse is the first step to cutting down those wait times. the plan is to build a campus by the end of 2025. >> what we want to create here is not only a more humane experience for the residents, more of a connection between the residents in the correctional officers. tara: darrell steinberg is the

governor's lead advisor for san quentin's transformation. >> we want to better prepare the residence for success when they leave, and to reduce the chances that they will commit other crimes. >> this is something that is an awesome opportunity to really learn because i love music. music is powerful. it has been a huge part of my journey. tara: he's in the audio engineering program. he has also earned a certificate in alcohol and drug counseling. >> i recognize a lot of the guys getting out have to have two jobs. i'm able to do counseling in one component and also work with music and audio. for me, it is the best of both worlds. tara: jason jones believes bolstering the programs will be a big part of reducing recidivism. san quentin is where he learned to code and now he comes to help out. >> i've become an asset for my community. it was like i immediately became

a resource and i did not expect that. tara: tara campbell, abc7news. gloria: we are getting a sneak peek inside the new modern design of caltrain's electric fleet of train cars. built in salt lake city, two full train sets were on display on saturday. the event brought out food trucks, vendors and a live dj. electrify the trances system is in line with california's aggressive climate goals. >> we have been talking about these trains for a long time. we've got 4000 rsvps. people have been pouring on board all morning to get their first glimpse of the future of caltrain. gloria: the project will increase the number of trains and improve safety and comfort on board. it includes digital map displays, baby changing tables, wi-fi and power outlets at every seat. a majority of the caltrain cord will be electrified and in-service by fall of next year. still to come, about to run for

>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions. gloria: good morning. we are starting this half-hour with a look at your weather with shayla girardin. shayla: good morning. nice and cool out there for us. also seeing quite a bit of that morning fog to start up the day. temperatures are hanging out in the 50's this sunday but some areas starting to creep into the low 60's. seeing a little bit of that fog along the coast, so not impacting visibility too much if you are heading out the door but some areas down to a quarter of a mile so make sure you are taking it slow out there. here's a look at the day planner.

d.c., strong winds bringing down trees. the city hit with wind gusts up to 84 miles per hour. >> it was unbelievable. first we saw these sheets of rain. it was like a hurricane. the wind was unbelievable. it really felt like a hurricane. >> branches and power lines covering streets throughout the d.c. metro area. this suv crushed. first responders say to people inside were injured. >> it was a lot of wind and rain just pounding for like at least a half hours straight. it was pounding. >> meanwhile, the southwest continuing to deal with record-breaking temperatures. phoenix, arizona with 30 days of temperatures at or above 110 degrees. el paso texas, 44 consecutive days above 100. in burbank, california, police officers observing this black bear trying to beat the heat in

a hot to but relief is on the way. >> the monsoon is kicking in the southwest which will help slowly temper some of the temperatures that have been so record high. >> as august approaches, forecasters say temperatures across the south and southwest will be above average, while the northern half of the country could see below average temperatures. abc news, new york. gloria: developing news. former president donald trump is denying any wrongdoing on new criminal charges. he was back on the campaign trail last night in pennsylvania and now accused of ordering two staffers to destroy surveillance footage and mishandling classified documents. his gop rivals spoke to crowds in iowa yesterday. will heard was the only candidate to openly criticize him at an event and was booed off stage. >> donald trump is running to stay out of prison. and if we elect -- [crowd booing]

i know, i know, i know. listen, i know the truth is hard. gloria: trump is vowing to run for president from prison if convicted and sentenced on criminal charges. coming up on this week, abc news anchor john carl will sit down with chris sununu and dan goldman. they will discuss both the trump indictment and hunter biden's plea agreement. you can watch the full interviews on this week right here on abc 7. a police chief in frisco, texas is apologizing after officers in his department pulled over a family by mistake with guns drawn. the family originally from arkansas was on their way to a basketball tournament. police say an officer ran the plate of a car and exit police searched arizona instead of arkansas, leading him to believe the car was stolen. the mother and her sixth-grade son were ordered to get out of

the car. bodycam video shows the father responding to officers after they realized their mistake. >> i am a basketball coach. i've got concealed carry and everything. you pulled a gun on my son for no reason. that is a terrible experience. i understand you have to do your job but we are all legit. gloria: in the video, the kids in the car are heard crying and before the family was let go, an officer apologized for the human error. closer to home, we are committed to building a better bay area. that focus finds us taking a close look at businesses in the city of san francisco to see how they are faring after the pandemic. one neighborhood in the city is doing much better financially than before. luz pena went to the haight to see what their secret is. luz: last week, we came to this haight-ashbury neighborhood to cover a story about a business owner that got assaulted but as

we dug deeper into what is happening in this neighborhood, we realized it is actually booming. if you walk around the haight, you will notice this neighborhood is alive and tourism is back. >> we are both from germany actually. luz: welcome. >> we are from france. >> paris. luz: many making a stop here because of the counterculture movement and the summer of love. >> we hand out for free to all of our visitors that come to promote walking through the whole neighborhood. luz: that is robert, he has another store in this neighborhood. it just opened two years ago. >> this store is doing about 25% more business than our other store. luz: his store is a modern version of a museum/a visitor center for the neighborhood. it has done so well that another neighborhood reached out to him asking if they could also have a customized version of this. >> two, three months ago, we opened up welcome castro. luz: across the street is also

seeing an uptick in sales, just a year after opening. >> we had a group in here earlier that was a french group, about 15 people. luz: according to the merchants association, they are seeing more storefronts f than before the pandemic. >> since 2021, we've had more than 20 new businesses coming into haight-ashbury. we have fewer vacancies than before the pandemic. luz: district five, which includes the neighborhood, along with several others including hays valley and japantown saw an increase in sales tax revenue in 2022 compared to pre-pandemic years. they say the secret of this neighborhood succeeding after the pandemic is -- >> the tightknit community. luz: the owner of love on haight says taking care of the community also means taking care of their employees. >> we increased our wages by about 20%. i was able to procure apartments above the shop during the pandemic so we can offer affordable housing to our employees. luz: these employees take their job seriously because at the end
