listening to. a fontana five, zac taylor, having taylor, you have it all. >> it's a wrap for the monumental eras tour. it's sunday, july 30. i'm lori rodriguez. you are watching abc 7 mornings. we are getting you ready to start your day. meteorologists shayla girardin is tracking the forecast. >> we had clouds out to start the morning. we are starting to see sunshine break that up a bit. the only area still noticing limited visibility is half moon bay down to less than two miles to start the morning. temperatures already on the rise in the 50's and 60's for the most part as you head out the door. still a little bit of a breeze, and onshore flow in the mix. antioch in the 70's this sunday. warming up fast. especially inland areas will get hot today. the 90's make a return. the bay comfortable inthe coas'.

we will break down when and where we will see the temperatures thus, when a cooldown is coming our way. for now, gloria, back to you. sideshows blocked traffic in multiple parts of san jose overnight. the first happened around 12:30 and in the morning in the east jose. shortly after, officers responded to another in the same area on capitol expressway. video shows multiple cards doing doughnuts as people got dangerously close. this was near pearl avenue. people are seen running from officers and people also lit fireworks throughout the night. new developments, cal fire confirmed the linen fire burning in alameda county is now contained. the fire broke out after 7:00 p.m. last night next to 580 near

northland road in the livermore area. the cause is still under investigation right now. in the east bay officials think the lawnmower started a 10 acre fire just outside of martin as where multiple agencies responded to put out the flames that threatened homes yesterday. abc7news spoke with one woman whose white jeep was doused in pink retardant as she escaped with her daughter and four dogs. >> the fire was around the house, like 400 feet. by the time i took off the dogs and everything i could not see anything towards the gate. >> it is very difficult. this is a rural area in the martinez hills. just getting to these areas is very difficult. >> now the fire is contained. nobody was hurt. no homes were destroyed. the battalion chief suggests mowing in the morning when it is cool because more grass in the afternoon is more likely to start a fire.

she believes crime in oakland is reaching boiling point. >> i was going to have a night out this week coming up and i canceled is because in the area i am in there was a shooting, a murder, and a drive-by in less than a week. >> a person was wounded at a shooting at 19th and broadway. they are looking for suspects. >> violence is growing in our communities and we have to work to ensure the proper resources are available. >> you do not know what the pain and what we have been through. >> this week emotions high at a public safety meeting thursday in oakland. the issue on everyone's mind is rising crime. one day after the oakland chapter of the naacp penned a letter asking for a stay at of -- state of emergency, the state chapter released this letter doubling down on the call because "our community members are in danger." according to the opd since january 1 20 23, violent crime is up 15% over the same

timeframe last year. property crime has increased 28%. homicides so far in 2023 are down 13% compared to 2022. burglaries are up 41% and vehicle theft has increased 50%. critics raise to concern about over policing. currently the department is understaffed. advocates say solutions are not easy, but creating a safer city must begin from the ground up. >> a lot of the issue start from home. if the families would get together and talk a little more i think it would curb a lot of the violence. >> in oakland cornell barnard abc7news. >> neighbors in oakland are getting the chance to give their input on the next police chief the city's police commission will hold a hearing -- series of community forums next month. the next two are saturday, august 5. one at 10: 30 a.m. at the golden gate bridge library and a second meeting is at 3:00 a.m. at the

>> a shocking day for beachgoers after a pilot crashed small aircraft in front of crowds of people. the aircraft came down for an emergency landing. its wheels hit the water. i've guards and others at the beach in new hampshire rushed to help rescuing the pilot and pulling the plane out of the water. >> a plane is going down. it crashed. we all stood up.

there is the plane upside down floating in the water. >> all of a sudden the guys out like, wow. >> incredible. the pilot was the only person on board. the pilot blamed the crash on engine problems. in daly city firefighters rescued a hand glider from a cliff after he drafted -- drifted off course and crashed into the ocean. the man was able to remove his parachute equipment and make it to shore, but was hit by waves as he waited for help area fire crews pulled him up from their helicopter after about an hour after they got the call. it happened at muscle rock off of was line drive. the man was injured and then taken of the hospital. for a second year in a row the sonoma county fair is moving forward with a controversial wrestling show despite calls to cancel it. the event features wrestlers with dwarfism. according to the chronicle, disability rights grrote letters to the fair's organizers

storms earlier this year nearly destroyed nearby businesses and an iconic or. -- wars. now there are plans to rebuild and enhance the wharf. zach fuentes talked to city leaders about the plans underway. >> capitola wharf is not only the cities, but our counties. it is the region. it's unique to have a beautiful wharf in your city and it means everything to everyone here. >> since early this year the wharf has been closed to the public after the center was ripped out by high surf and storms. >> i saw it the day it happened and it was shocking and horrifying. >> extreme damage prompted a visit by president biden. since then businesses along the hard-hit esplanade have returned. tourists have come back. still the wharf remains closed. city officials say they are working constantly for to make a big return. >> nu project, the capitola wharf enhancement project, is underway.

local art. >> those that call capitola home are eager for their beloved orf to return. >> i hope people will rise to this and utilize it in a way they have not before with great appreciation. >> it has been a nice weekend so far. will it continue this sunday? meteorologist shayla jordan is tracking the forecast. good morning. >> yes, nice conditions yesterday and similar today. it will be a little warmer in some areas. you can see the wind, the breeze starting this morning. it will continue to pick up. we had a little bit of a marine layer, fog along the coast and bay. that will start to burn off. more sunshine well into the mix ended will be nice and mild by the coast, warmer as you into the bay and hot in the end. the next two days talking about the 90's for some areas. then something for all of us to look forward to. nice cooling tuesday into wednesday. we will see a little drop in temperatures.

today again we had a marine layer to start the morning. that will burn off into the afternoon hours. you see the mix of sun and clouds heading in the end. mostly sunny skies but clouds in the mix. overnight at cloud cover and fog builds in again. mostly cloudy skies to start monday before once again a mix of sun and clouds as we head to the afternoon hours. the other thing we will notice over the next couple days will be wind speeds. we saw some of it out there today. a similar set up today. quite a few areas sing when speeds in the teens. san francisco, fairfield starting to see speeds pick up. that will continue into the afternoon. especially as we had inland, we see wind speeds gusting upwards of 20 miles per hour. be prepared for a breezy afternoon again. overnight most of the wind dies down. some areas continue to see in the teens. for the most part a little bit of a break before monday

afternoon. highs today. it will be a tad warmer for many of us. san francisco making it to 80 degrees, morgan hill in the 90's. cooler by the 60's. also we continue to see 60's in the sunset district and downtown and heading inland, things get warmer. 81 in napa, 91 in lakeport. be prepared. you will see plenty of sunshine and warm conditions. the breeze in the mix, union city, fremont in the upper 70's. with warmer temperatures and the wind we were talking about fire risk will also be a concern. 94 in brentwood. make sure you stay hydrated. temperatures tonight, a little break from the heat. dip into the 50's across the board. some of you hanging onto 60's this evening. a similar set up tomorrow. inland, the 90's again. the bay in the 70's. 60's for the coast. then look at this.

steinberg is the governor's lead advisor for the san quentin transformation. rex we want to better prepare residents for success when they leave and reduce the chance they will commit other crimes. this is something that is an awesome opportunity to learn. because, i love music. music is healing at a powerful and has been a huge part of my journey. >> he is in the audio engineering program and earned a certificate in alcohol and drug counseling. >> a lot of the guys getting out have to do two jobs. if i can do counseling as one component and work with music and audio for me that is the best of both worlds. >> jason jones seven bolstering these programs will be a big part of reducing recidivism. san quentin is where he learned to goad and now he returns to help out. >> i became an immediate asset for my community.

comfortable, 70's today, 60's by the coast. look at this. nice cooling over the next few days. not too much of a change monday. tuesday we will see a drop in temperatures. i will break down how long the cooldown will last and when we warm up again later in the show. for now, gloria, back to you. gloria: the extreme weather is taking a hold of much of the country. people are dealing with record-breaking temperatures. others are cleaning up after fierce wind and destructive storms brought down trees. abc 7 news reporter allison classic is tracking at all. >> allis along the northeast for cities dealing with the first heatwave of the season, dangerous storms affecting millions of americans from virginia to maine. this was the scene at jfk airport saturday. you can see planes pounded with rain. further south in washington, d.c., strong wind bringing down

trees. the city had once wind gusts up to 84 miles per hour. >> it was unbelievable. first we thought like these sheets of rain. really, it was like a hurricane. i mean, the wind was unbelievable. it really felt like a hurricane. allison: branches and powerlines covering streets through that easy metro area. this suv crashed. -- crushed. first responders say two people inside were injured. >> it was a lot of wind and rain pounding for at least a half hours straight i would say. it was just really pounding, coming down. allison: meanwhile the southwest continuing to deal with record-breaking temperatures. phoenix, arizona with 30 days of temperatures at or above 110 degrees. el paso, texas, 44 consecutive days above 100 degrees. in burbank, california friday police officers observing this black bear trying to beat the sweltering heat in a hot tub. but, relief is on the way.

>> the monsoon is kicking in in the southwest to help slowly temper some of the temperatures that have been record high. allison: as august approaches forecasters say temperatures across the south and southwest will be above average while the northern half of the country could see above -- below average temperatures. allison classic abc news, new york. >> knew at 9:00 the san mateo county sheriffs office says a man is under arrest suspected of stabbing two women. one of them died. it happened in redwood city on fair oaks avenue around 12:30 this morning. deputies responded after a woman called 911 screaming for help saying somebody was trying to kill her. the sheriffs office says when deputies got there they found a man sitting outside the home covered in blood. the 44-year-old was taken into custody. they found the two victims inside. one of them died at the hospital. the other is listed as stable.

new this morning the white house is on high alert. u.s. officials are reportedly searching for chinese malware that could disrupt american military operations. the new york times says intelligence officials believe the malicious software is hidden in various defense systems. one congressional official told the newspaper the malware could allow china to cut off power, water, and communications to military bases, slowing deployment and resupplying operations. officials also tell the times because military bases often share the same supply infrastructure as a civilian homes and businesses, many other americans did also be affected. developing news. former president donald trump is denying any wrongdoing on new criminal charges. donald trump was back on the campaign trail last night in pennsylvania. he is now accused of ordering two staffers to destroy surveillance footage and mishandling classified documents.
