moving forward finding solutions. this is abc 7 news. remembering a young man from oakland a talented actor on the rise with a bright future open about his struggle with mental health issues tonight fans and his family's oakland home and had deep ties to the city. abc's seven news reporter tim johns has been tracking developments since cloud's death as well as reaction from local fans. tim. >> yeah. dan as word of cloud's death spread, tributes began pouring in for the late actor online. everyone from congresswoman barbara lee to the oakland school of the arts,

which cloud was an alumnus of, are expressing their condolences . >> i'm really sad. i'm actually like very sad. he was like one of my favorite characters. >> disbelief in sorrow for many after the death of oakland born actor angus cloud on monday. cloud's family, who still resides in the east bay city, announcing his death in a statement to abc news. it reads in part, it is with the heaviest heart that we had to say goodbye to an incredible human today as an artist, a friend, a brother and a son. angus was special to all of us in so many ways. the 25 year old cloud was best known for starring in the hit hbo show euphoria. as a child, he attended the oakland school of the arts, which reacted to his death by saying the osa community is mourning as we remember angus and we offer our deepest condolences to his family and friends. angus is remembered as a multifaceted and talented artist and instrumental music, digital media and production design. who had a huge presence at osa cloud, maintained strong ties to oakland throughout his life and

and for urgent matters you can call the national suicide and crisis lifeline by simply dialing 988. >> tomorrow city workers of two unions will vote on a strike that would be the largest san jose has seen in 40 years. the unions represent 4500 employees who work in the airport, housing department and city libraries. the city is offering a 5% raise next year and a four and 3% in years following. but many say that's not enough to survive in san jose. i will be losing money, but it's for the greater good because we as san jose city employees, we deserve to have the same amount of raises as our sister cities. the city council is mediating some negotiations. san jose mayor matt mehan says he doesn't want the city to overextend itself in a way that could lead to layoffs later. both sides say they don't want a strike to happen, but unions want to see some positive progress before calling it off. >> all right. let's get you ready for tuesday with a look at tomorrow's forecast with abc

seven weather anchor spencer christian. spencer. >> okay, dan, let's get ready for a day that's going to be cooler and breezier than today was with some lingering clouds as well. here's a look at our day planner, 24 hour planner, 7 a.m. we'll have high clouds and some bit of a marine layer lingering as well. an overcast morning, we'll call it, with temperatures at 7 a.m, ranging from only 56 to about 58 degrees across the entire region. now, by 12 noon, skies will become brighter, but they'll still be lingering clouds. it'll be breezy about 72 to 74 degrees inland, mid to upper 60s around the bay, upper 50s on the coast for pm as it gets a little milder, we'll see temperatures rising into the low 80s in the warmest inland spots. upper 60s near the bay, about 60 degrees on the coast. and then as we get into the evening hours, 7 p.m, clouds get a little bit thicker again. the marine layer gets deeper. temperatures will be in the low 70s inland, mid 60s around the bay upper 50s on the coast. a cooler, a breezier day than today. and that's just the first of more to come, which i'll tell you about a little bit later. dan and ama. >> okay, spencer, thanks very

much. developing news, attorneys for the man charged in the killing of tech executive bob lee are questioning the investigation during a preliminary hearing in san francisco today, police testified about a kitchen knife they found near the scene the same brand of knives was found in the suspect's apartment. nima, mommy's sisters apartment. defense attorneys focused on how that knife was processed. >> and what we're doing right now is setting the scene for what kind of police work was done and what the limits of that police work are. and we do wonder why some people weren't interviewed, some things weren't collected, some things weren't analyzed. >> surveillance video was shown today in court of lee and momenti together in the millennium tower elevator, as well as leaving together in his car on the night of the killing. mameni has pleaded not guilty. his attorneys say he felt no malice toward bob lee to the south bay and an effort to arm street vendors in san jose with information after a number of attacks in cases of harassment. >> abc7 news reporter lauren martinez tells us those street

vendors could also be instrumental in helping revitalize downtown. >> for the first time, the city of san jose hosted a resource fair designed for street vendors . viral videos have captured assaults on local vendors. on monday, three workshops provided information on workers rights, crime prevention and marketing. a small business inicio is es el apoyo de nayeli said she thinks this fair is a good start. she sells chamoy covered apples and other fruits. she said support from the city will benefit the array of vendors out there. >> es nada los permisos, she said. >> more than anything, information about permits was the most important to her. she wants to stabilize her business so she no longer has to worry. a council member, omar torres, said this resource fair is about safety but also how to grow a business. >> the stories that we hear from these storefronts is that they actually started off as street vendors or they they actually

started off as food trucks. >> torres said. the hope is these business owners are going to expand and help the city fill more than 70 vacant storefronts in san jose. >> we as a city want to make it easier for street vendors and micro businesses to open up storefronts. here in the city of san jose, our street vendors deserve to be safe and respected and have the opportunity to make an honest living. >> we also want to ensure that the community is safe and that people are following health codes and clearing the public right of way and allowing people to walk safely around our downtown in san jose. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. happening tomorrow, liquidation starts for anchor brewing. >> the oldest craft brewery in the county earlier this month, the 127 year old brewery announced it was going out of business. anchor brewing's website says the tasting rooms last day was yesterday. the san fransco breweries operations permanently closed. today, more than two dozen groups have expressed interest in bidding on and possibly saving t iconic brewery, including a group of workers. that auction process opens in just a couple of days.

>> a focus now on san francisco's economic recovery. as part of our commitment to building a better bay area, san francisco mayor london breed announced a four day carnival is on its way to san francisco's civic center. and it's coming this august. it is all part of an effort by the mayor and the city recreation and parks department. you can expect a number of rides, games, great food and more. the hope is the carnival will begin to transform civic center into a place where the community can come together at the end of the day, we can have all the law enforcement in the world, but the best way to keep a space happy and safe is to activate it and make it fun and to engage in positive placemaking rather than negative placemaking. >> this four day carnival runs august 24th through the 27th on fulton street. >> admission is $10 for those over the age of 12 and free for younger children. >> in the east bay, a nonprofit group in martinez is gearing up for tomorrow's national night

out, the annual event to build bridges between the community and police. night out not only promotes community groups, but also helps fund them. abc seven news reporter j.r stone has the story of one such group that teaches kid life skills in the ring. >> this is this is ho whoa ho. >> 15 year old quinton wadsworth and his brother john. yeah they're boxers. and don't put me in the ring with them. but they're also prime examples of kids working at something they're passionate about. but even if it don't have the best days, you you learn something from it. >> in that same spot when you come back. >> yeah. shaun sharkey and dan door said, want to bring the wadsworth brothers mentality to other kids. >> they run the feet first foundation and they'll be teaming up with police and other organizations for national night out tuesday in martinez, letting people know about their non contact boxing program that is in several junior highs and high schools across the bay area and will soon be expanding to

southern california. we're trying to get these kids to find out what their passion about it. >> we're not teaching them to be boxers. we're teaching them to be boxers in life. >> we're building confidence and ability to focus. and i think maybe the most important thing is we're engaging them back in school again. >> you'd think a punch would be the first thing that they show the kids. not the case, though. it's actually the footwork that they'd have in the ring going forward, sliding that back foot and then going backwards, sliding that front foot. and then the combination of the two punch has come later. >> there it is. >> but let's pause here for a minute, because before the physical stuff happens, it's a mental game at a time when many kids are having their own battles, especially with the two year run with covid. >> they disengaged and it's not that easy to get engaged again. and that's what really what we've done. but we really started talking to about in a circle time about you know, where their life's going, what do they want to do after school,

you know, what kind of challenges they're facing because we're going to do is we're going to work through those challenges is in this class. >> the program happens during a period of the school day where some kids who may be struggling in part of their life, but anyone can join in. and if you think it's all boys, think again. >> in some academies it's half and half. wow. and the girls seem to learn it quicker than the boys. don't tell them that. that throws better punches. >> i throw them faster. i say he throws it faster, but i throw it harder. >> don't worry though, because while the boxing wadsworth brothers are competing on the feet first program does not involve any fighting, just the physical and mental training that comes with it along with that special feeling of accomplishing important nice in martinez jr stone abc7 news. >> what a great program and other than martinez. national night out events will be held in 38 million neighborhoods across the country tomorrow. many bay area neighborhoods and police

i? you're an idiot. i know you are. but what am i? i know you are. but what am i? >> reubens died last night after a private six year struggle with cancer. his publicist issued a statement written by the actor in which he told his fans they should, quote, accept my apology for not going public with what i've been facing the last six years. reubens developed the pee-wee herman character in the 1970s. it became hugely popular with the 1985 film pee-wee's big adventure, followed by a saturday morning children's program called pee wee's playhouse. paul reubens was 70 years old. >> e-40 he will be celebrated with a street named after him in vallejo. it was unanimously approved by the vallejo city council last week, and this year marks the 30th anniversary of 40's first album, the mile stretch of magazine street between laurel and old glen cove road will be nad e-40 way, thra legengrew up in vallejo and released his song called magazine street on h 2015 album. it's the street where he lived as a kid, so it's

very personal for him. >> ucsf's, chair of the department of medicine and twitter star dr. bob wachter, has been on the mend since his bout with covid early this month , left him with a smashed head and some internal injuries. we spoke to him on our 3 p.m. show. oh, look at that. just breaks your heart, right? getting answers. his first tv interview with us since his journey got more than 4 million views online. he said he developed covid symptoms that quickly worsened. there's something in medicine called a vasovagal reaction where if you're feeling very uncomfortable or in pain and you're dehydrated, you can have a reaction where you're nervous system kind of fails, you and all of your blood pools and your legs and you don't have enough blood going to your brain and you pass out. >> i left the shower and that's the last thing i remember. i woke up on the floor of my bathroom in a pool of blood. i saw a trashcan next to my next to the toilet that had a face shaped indentation in it. >> oh, boy. well, aside from the

gash to his head, he did sustain a small hematoma. >> that's blood around the brain and a fractured vertebra. but not to worry, because he is all good now and has been recovering well from his injuries. well, new developments now. the cdc reports covid hospitalizations are on the rise, 12% increase in mid-july saw the country go from 7100 hospitalizations to 8035 nationwide. even with the increase, hospitalizations remain at record lows compared to previous years. infections are attributed to covid strain and omicron descendant xb cal lifornia is seeing the slowest start to the fire season in decades. >> all that heavy moisture, the bay area got between january and march took us out of the drought. as you well know. cal fire says it created an abundance of fuel. however, like tall brush which is just now starting to dry out in contra costa county, june has historically been the biggest month for fires, but not this year. we're certainly prepared, but it's given our crews and

like our wildland fire hand crew, crew 12 has had additional time where they're not on wildland fires to do fuel mitigation projects. the biggest fire of the summer so far in contra costa county was only eight acres and that fire burned in the hills just outside martinez over the weekend. and officials believe it was caused by a lawn mower without any more rain in sight, fires like that over the weekend are expected to continue new details, some relief tonight in phenix heatwave. >> a 31 day streak of highs at or above 110 degrees ended today . the historic heatwave stretched from texas across new mexico and arizona and into california's desert. phenix and its suburbs sweltered longer than most. the streak there ended but barely. with today's high reaching 108 degrees. >> so they weren't exactly wearing jackets. yeah at least a little better, i guess. at least they're getting a bit of a break. wow, that's brutal. all right. state water officials are now confirming an algae bloom in san francisco bay.

>> abc7 news weather anchor spencer christian is here now and tells us it's similar to a major outbreak last year. >> spencer it is indeed. i'm of the algae was the first it was first spotted near the berkeley marina and now an alert is going out to those who frequent the bay waters yeah just this this reddish wash across the water here for john rosenfield of the environmental group sf bay keeper, it's a bit like deja vu all over again, scanning the waters of the berkeley marina for the same algae species that devastated thousands of fish around san francisco bay last summer. these aerial photos show the reddish hue known as red tide, which was spotted over the weekend. >> baykeeper got a call to our pollution hotline on thursday that reported dark brown colored water in the berkeley marina. we went out and investigated and found that that water that discolored water extended from emeryville all all the way up to albany. >> later this afternoon, state officials confirmed that the algae is heterosigma akashiwo, possibly a remnant from last year's outbreak. while advising

people to avoid entering water. that's clearly discolored. the algae is not known to present a risk to humans. reassure during the concerned swimmers who were taking advantage of a calm day at the berkeley marina. i'm a triathlete, so it's better for me to practice in the open water than it is in the regular pool. >> you know, i'm concerned about that. and i love being in the water. i love the bay and when i notice biking over here this morning, the water did look a little red. >> the algae is also known to thrive off nitrogen. a nutrient releas by local wastewater treatment plants. state officials say they are working with those treatment plants to try to reduce the load, but for now, they'll be monitoring shoreline areas to track any spread and there'll be more information to come as there's a field study planned for wednesday. and officials say they're also using satellite technology to help track the algae bloom. now, let's talk about our weather. it is a bit breezy or it was, but it's getting calmer right now as we look at surface wind speeds. we've got breezy conditions in san francisco, but pretty calm in most other places. not much

in the 24 hour temperature change, a couple of degrees cooler in some spots, a degree or two warmer in others. so on we go to a live view from our exploratorium camera looking back at a portion of the skyline of san francisco, currently 58 degrees here in the city. oakland 60. 61 in mountain view, low 60s. also at san jose and palo alto and 57 at half moon bay. here's a view from emeryville and it's quiet there . you can see the outline of some light thin clouds. developing now, 59 degrees at santa rosa and napa. we have mid 60s at fairfield and concord, 62 at livermore. and from our rooftop camera looking across the embarcadero, these are our forecast headlines. marine layer deepens and expands overnight. it will be much cooler tomorrow as a matter of fact, cooler days tomorrow through thursday and inland heat will return this weekend with some triple digit temperatures likely before that little heat spike is over. here's our forecast animation overnight. we'll see lots of high clouds moving over and they will linger through much of the day tomorrow. the marine layer will deepen and expand and produce enough moisture to perhaps trigger some drizzle

that patchy drizzle mainly near the coastline in the early morning hours. but it might move on land during the mid-morning hours and even up to almost noon tomorrow before it starts to dry out a bit overnight. low temperatures will be mainly in the mid to upper 50s highs tomorrow, up to about 60 at the coast right around the bay shoreline, upper 70 upper 60s, rather, to low 70s inland areas that were near 90 today will only be in the low to mid 80s tomorrow. and as we look further into the forecast future wednesday pretty much the same range as tomorrow low to mid 80s inland 60s around the bay. also that range on thursday. but itwn friday. and here's the accuweather seven day forecast as we look ahead to that weekend warm up coming our way. we'll see high temperatures inland on saturday in the upper 90s sunday , probably up to about 102 or 103in the hottest spots. the heat eases just a bit on monday before temperatures start to tumble a bit more midweek next week. >> all right. nothing like phenix, thank goodness. >> yes, nothing like that at all. no fortunately. yes.
