this developing story and spoke with people living nearby about their neighbor. reporter: the police captain tells me that 90% of the explosive material on this property has been removed, a reason why the evacuation orders have been dropped with the exception of this home and the four that surround it. thursday night, some families could be seen arriving home. after the evacuation order was dropped. others, not so lucky. >> a change from three hours to 24 hours and now it will be another 24 hours. reporter: john lives close enough to the house that he is unable to go home. emergency crews described to us what they found on this property and the progress they've made since coming across it wednesday. >> they've processed over 600 different chemicals. 800 bottles or vials.

waiting until crews are fully finished to go home. >> i just want to go home. i have a bunch of cats and their, dogs, kids. but i get it. they want to make sure everybody is safe. reporter: officers tell me that crews will be back out here between 8:00 and 9:00 friday morning to finish the process and remove the final 10% of explosive materials that are still here on property. j.r. stone, abc7news. ama: in the north bay, residents on myrtle avenue woke up to this site. a mountain lion casually walking through their neighborhood. residents called 911. the police officers who responded saw the mountain lion leave the area. the animal hasn't been seen since. police will contact state fish and wildlife only if there's another siding. dan: fire raced dangerously close to homes today in the hills above san jose.

it started in the clayton road area and there was aerial support before the flames got out of control. southbay reporter lauren martinez spoke with one man who was ready to defend his house with a garden hose. reporter: from the air and ground, fire crews battled a 66 acre fire that crawled up the eastern foothills in unincorporated santa clara county. cal fire said 3:00 thursday afternoon, the flames threatened structures off clayton road and via della vista. >> 10 minutes, it moved up a third of a mile. reporter: dennis called and the fire. he wasn't packing his bags but got the garden hose out just in case. >> i was quite worried. fortunately, i built this firebreak. it prevented the fire from getting very close to my house. reporter: fire breaks kept the clayton fire at bay on his property.

sky 7 captured video of the fire inching toward three back yards. >> i encourage anybody with a home on a hill like this to make an effort to have bare dirt around your house for as much as they can get. reporter: different fire crews parked outside homes for structure protection. fire officials say there were some evacuations but no structures were damaged and no injuries reported. >> they did catching the fire and preventing any structural damage in this immediate area. reporter: the cause of the fire is under investigation. lauren martinez, abc7news. ama: when we talk about fires, the weather is something we are keeping a close eye on. dan: sandhya patel is here with your 24 hour accuweather forecast. sandhya: today, fortunately had enough of a marine influence to help us out. it's here right now but things are changing.

not decided whether to retry the case. we are following developing news about a man with local ties, accused of objecting a woman in seattle. there may be more victims. police say they found handwritten notes in the home in oregon. he seemingly outlined a plan for what he called operation takeover and laid out tips to avoid an investigation. they found a map of the cinderblock room the kidnapped woman escaped from. zuberi lived in a number of states including california where he was apparently in oakland from 2012 to 2018. ama: it's been over three months since governor newsom announced the state was stepping in to help get drug dealers off the street of the tenderloin. many residents say they still feel unsafe. the saint anthony foundation held a town hall with city leaders including the police chief and district attorney to discuss safety. tim johns was there.

>> we have seniors that won't come outside. children that can play outside anymore. we want our neighborhood back. reporter: a plea for better public safety. seymour joined dozens in san francisco to talk with city leaders. the social services provider calling the community meeting following rising violence in the area. that includes a shooting several weeks ago not far from their front door. >> in the same week, two people being stabbed within easy walking distance here of golden gate avenue. reporter: open air drug markets where another big subject on discussion. both district attorney brooke jenkins and law enforcement officials believe the solution to that is about multi--- is multifaceted. a form of disturbance has to be part of the equation. >> people can't make a rational choice for themselves to get into treatment. we have to help them detox and make the responsible decision. reporter: despite the concerns

of locals, the chief says his department is arresting more people than they have in years. >> we have succeeded all of last year already. reporter: jenkins thinks the courts are a big part of the problem, letting repeat offenders back on the street. >> it's taking for open cases. that means the police have to arrest the same person four times on average before the court will agree to hold them in custody. reporter: the panel says the collaboration between their departments will ultimately make the tenderloin a safer place. a hope for del seymour who think this neighborhood is worth fighting for. >> my california license plate says tenderloin. that's how much i love this community. i'm not going to let it go to waste like it seems like it is sometimes. reporter: tim johns, abc7news. dan: the search continues in oakland for a new police chief after leronne armstrong was fired. the mayor fired him in february

after concerns about his response to police misconduct allegations. starting saturday, the community in oakland will get a chance to weigh in on the selection of the next chief. the first of five forums will start at 10:30 a.m. in the golden gate branch library. for a list of all the upcoming forums to talk about the new chief in oakland, visit oakland.gov. ama: san jose city leaders are proposing an ordinance to ban encampments by the on house near schools. this follows complaints from faculty and students. faculty says on house people who have set up in canon answer right outside the campus have broken into school buildings and committed theft. >> there were instances where i would have to walk past individuals while being told rude comments. >> barely trying to make it and gather whatever they can. they are constantly being harassed and moved by the city. ama: the mayor and a

dan: former president donald trump is back at us golf club in new jersey tonight after appearing in court in washington to face charges of trying to overturn the 2020 election. the former president entered a not guilty plea and is due back in court at the end of the month. this is the third indictment against trump and there's a chance he could face more charges in georgia over the effort to change the outcome of the election. here's justin finch. reporter: before a judge in d.c., former president donald trump entered a not guilty plea to all four criminal counts he was charged with by special

counsel jack smith. abc news learning that smith was also in the courtroom, at one point drunk -- trump staring right at him. smith indicted trump on felony charges including conspiracy to defraud the united states and conspiracy against rights. meaning trump is accused of stopping people from exercising their right to vote. the judge explaining to trump, he could face more than 50 years in prison if convicted on all four counts. trump was released on conditions including not communicating facts about the case to anyone trump knows to be a witness unless through counsel or with counsel present. he spoke on the tarmac at idc area airport before heading back to his new jersey estate. >> this is a persecution of a political opponent. this was never supposed to happen in america. reporter: trump is set for a pretrial hearing for august 28

the two ofskg people to choose their fighter. newsom issued the challenge last week and a santos agreed to it yesterday. the two sides are working out particulars. newsom wanted to be on fox news in november and moderated by sean hannity. ama: an oakland native who was kicked out of the tennessee legislature won his seat back in a special election. justin jones was expelled earlier this year after interrupting proceedings on the floor to protest gun control. the protest came following a mass shooting a natural school. jones coasted to victory, getting 80% of the vote. another member who was also kicked out one his seat tonight. the attempt to expel a third membam srt. the group earned the nickname the tennessee three. the u.s. circuit court of appeals ruled to allow a controversial biden administration asylum policy to continue. the policy would allow stopping migrants who pass through another country from seeking asylum in the united states.

it was blocked last week by district court judges. the ninth u.s. circuit court of appeals ruled to allow the administration to carry out the policy. dan: in the north bay, a group of girls is taking on an attempt at hate and turning it into love. one family security camera caught one flyer landing in their driveway, tossed from a passing car. the flyers contain antisemitic language and were left on doorsteps in marin this week. this led to a group of girls wanting to create their own posters of love and passing them out through the neighborhood. >> it made me feel super sad. why would someone do that? we decided that we were just going to make flyers that were like the opposite of what they were saying. >> here's some flyers for you. dan: authorities are still investigating. the girls plan to take their campaign to other areas to spread some joy this summer.

good for them. a panel of independent experts at the cdc determined all infants under eight months of age should get a new antibody shot. the shot is to protect them against severe rsv the fda approved it for newborns last month. it will be added to the cdc's childhood immunization schedule once the cdc director signs off on it. rsv is so common that nearly all children get the infection by the time they reach three years old. ama: frontier airlines wants you to arrive super early to the airport pretty soon. the carrier flies to six u.s. cities from the airport at sfo. the low-cost carrier says check-in counters were you drop bags will close 60 minutes before departure time starting august 16. right now, the cutoff is 45 minutes. frontier will have the strictest check-in time among u.s. airlines. it's being done to make sure your bags get from the counter to the belly of the plane without delay.
