we will find sunshine faster this morning compared to yesterday. a warmer afternoon. the warm-up continues for the weekend. let's check in with sue and see how traffic is doing. sue: fog advisory for the golden gate bridge. you can see the fog. you will definitely need windshield wipers across the span. traffic is light, just to make sure you slow down because visibility is limited. very light conditions over the bridge. friday like so far. highway 4 to san francisco on 80 is about 30 minutes. >> thank you. a neighborhood is still under evacuation orders more than 36 hours after he has met situation -- hazmat situation. five thous houses are evacuated.

they have a number of containers to go through and will be back at it this morning. told us they were able to remove about 90% of the explosive chemicals from the backyard of one of these homes behind us. that is how officials were able to end the evacuation order with the exception of at home and four homes surrounding it. we watched yesterday as some families could be seen arriving home immediately after the order was lifted after being away for just under 24 hours. fire officials say they made great progress. we are told investigators processed more than 600 different chemicals and 800 bottles or containers ranging from explosives to acids and more, all found packed in an outdoor storage shed. officials caution saying they still have more work to do this morning and will be focused on

finishing the cleanup today. >> we will not get through them tonight. the products left are not any less dangerous. they are all still pretty dangerous. >> i have a bunch of cats, dogs, kids. but i get it. they want to make sure everybody is safe. reporter: neighbors tell us the man who lived in the home and recently died was very nice. he even told them when he was alive that he was a retired professor who specialized in chemistry, but he was a bit of a hoarder who had to create pathways through his house because he collected so much stuff. officials tell us crews will be back here on site this morning continuing the investigation between 8:00 and 9:00. they hope to remove the final 10% of her many chemicals in that time -- of remaining chemicals in that time. amanda: thanks.

tomorrow, people living in oakland will be able to give their opinions on the qualities that should be considered for a new police chief. it is the first of five public forums. they've been without a police chief since the chief was fired in february. the police commission will select four candidates for the job and send a list to the mayor who will make a final decision. it has been over three months since governor gavin newsom announced the state will step into get drug dealers off the streets of san francisco's tenderloin. people who live there say they still feel unsafe. the saint anthony foundation held a town hall with the san francisco d.a. and police chief yesterday. the social services provider called the meeting because of recent violence in the neighborhood. one local business owner expressed frustration but believes the city can turn in around. >> we have got seniors who

cannot or will not come outside. we have children that cannot play outside anymore. we want our neighborhood back. amanda: d.a. jenkins acknowledged the concerns. she believes the courts are a big part of the problem saying it often let's repeat offenders back on the streets. >> it has taken four open cases. the police have to arrest the same person four times on average before the court will hold them in custody. amanda: police chief scott says they are close to surpassing the number of people arrested in all of last year and we are only in august. reggie: san jose city leaders are proposing an ordinance to ban the un-housed near schools. faculty members say un-housed people with and campus outside the campus have broken into school buildings and stolen things. >> there were a few instances where i would have to walk past

individuals living in the encampments where i would be told rude remarks and comments. >> they are barely making it and try to gather what they can. they are constantly harassed and moved by the city. reggie: they are looking to pass an ordinance that would keep encampments and vehicle dwellings 150 feet from schools. amanda: authorities are investigating a 66-acre brush fire that burned dangerously close to homes in the hills above san jose. get started in the area of clayton road yesterday afternoon and crawled up the eastern foothills in santa clara county. abc 7 spoke to the man who called in the fire and grabbed a garden hose to protect his property. >> i was quite worried. fortunately, i built fire breaks. they prevented the fire from getting close to my house. amanda: fire officials say there

reggie: the daughter of california senator i am feinstein has been given power of attorney over the sitting senator. she will help the 90-year-old handle legal batters of relate -- legal battles of her late husband? estate. there are calls for her to resign after mental lapses. she says she will not seek reelection 2024. a health alert. ac/dc panel is recommending a new vaccine for and others. it is the leading cause of hospitalization in infants. the panel is recommending the vaccine for infants under eight months old and 8-19 months old at higher risk. a nonprofit in the mission district is struggling to keep up with the rising number of un-housed people as the number of volunteers continues to go down.

had been coping with mental health issues and struggling with the loss of his father. amanda: taylor swift was not kidding when she said sparks will fly. santa clara city officials have issued fines against the company responsible for her shows because the fireworks were lit past the 11:00 curfew at levi's stadium. the pyrotechnics company faces a penalty of up to $1000 for each night. despite the fine, santa clara police did not receive any noise complaints during either of her concerts. taylor swift is waking up in southern california this morning after opening a sold-out series of shows in l.a. some bay area swifties ended up buying tickets for some of the l.a. shows after mixing up the dates last week. >> i knew the tickets were legitimate. at purchase them through ticketmaster. -- i purchased them through ticketmaster. i looked at my phone and saw

today. we get hot inland over the weekend. today, we are close to average for this time of year. 70's and 80's in the south bay with sunshine and good air quality. mainly 70's along the peninsula. on the coast, lower 60's. 60 per half moon bay. downtown will hit 66. the fog is not as yesterday. more sunshine across the city. warm today in the north bay. 80's and 90's. in the east bay, we were stuck in the 60's yesterday. today, we will be in the 70's where we should be this time of year. inland 80's to 90's with sunshine and good air quality. dropping into the 50's again and turning mainly cloudy with the marine layer. it is all about the weekend warm up. by saturday afternoon, we have 90's returning in many cities. by sunday, the heat intensifies away from the coast. just like previous warm spells, the coast will stay comfortable

bit. reggie: former president trump pled not guilty to trying to overturn the election. indeed. good morning. it was an intense atmosphere at the courthouse. his fingerprints were taken and his personal information recorded. he was not placed in handcuffs nor was there a mugshot. for the third time, former president trump the criminal defendant in court. -- ordinary scene -- extraordinary scene unfolding as he pled not guilty. special counsel jack on the far left of this sketch, at times looking at trump who at one point stared directly back. officers who defended the

this. trump's next scheduled for august 28. notably, that is just five days after the first republican primary debate. reggie: thank you. amanda: we are tracking developing news out of san pablo where one neighborhood has been forced to evacuate for more than 36 hours. last night, more people near richmond park and giant highway were let back into their homes at five houses on stanton avenue are still evacuated. investigators have a number of containers to go through and will be back at work this morning. reporter: we are told investigators are supposed to be back on site between 8:00 and 9:00 to finish up the methodical process of

removing explosive chemicals from the backyard shed of the home behind me. this comes as four surrounding homes have been away from their homes for two nights. the police captain tells us they were able to remove 90% of the explosives yesterday which investigators believe may have been there for years. that is how officials were finally able to drop the evacuation order for most neighbors after being away for just 24 hours. we spoke with one neighbor who is still evacuated. he says the man who lived in the home recently died and was very nice. he even told them when he was alive he was a retired professor who specialized in chemistry but had some corks. -- quirks. >> he was kind of a hoarder. he had pathways house because he collected so much stuff. >> they processed over 600

that removed the democratically elected president from power. people traveling with the antioch based church group have been stuck in the country. leaders from the cornerstone christian school say a group of 11 members left july 20. they were there to assist at a community center they built for youth. the military coup forced the borders to shut down leaving the group stranded. the church says they have been in contact but the connection is spotty. >> the communication of what is going on has not been super great. they are in the unknown right now which is a scary place to be. reggie: the church has been working with a congressman and senator feinstein's office who they say has been helpful trying to get the group home. amanda: a coalition of parents, students, and teachers is suing a southern california school board because of its ban on curriculum surrounding gay rights. the temecula valley district voted not to estate endorsed textbooks which included of to

before the cases next week. amanda: u.s. circuit court of appeals will allow a controversy of biden administration asylum policy to continue. it was district court judge. yesterday, the ninth circuit court of appeals ruled to allow the administration to carry out the policy. democrats on the senate judiciary committee want supreme court justice samuel alito to recuse himself from any future legal disputes. the senator's say his recent interview with the wall street journal created an appearance of impropriety with the public. in the interview, he said congress should stay out of the high court's business. reggie: federal prosecutors have filed for sam bankman-fried's

reggie: a major shakeup is brewing in college sports with the pac-12 conference. changes to the conference could have a huge impact in the bay area. ryan curry explains. >> there is the possibility the entire conference could dissolve in the near future. multiple schools are considering joining other conferences we pac-12 struggles to land a new media deal for televised games. last year, usc and ucla announced they would join the big ten conference. colorado announced recently they were leaving the pac-12. a subpar media deal would mean a

the legislature won back his seat in a special election. he was expelled earlier this year after interrupting proceedings on the floor to protest for more gun control. the protests came following a mass shooting at a nashville school. he coasted to victory getting nearly 80% of the vote. another member kicked out also won back his seat last night. the attempt to expel a third member came up one vote short. the group earned the nickname the tennessee three. reggie: wildlife officials in the north are on the lookout for this cat spotted on home surveillance video yesterday avenue. police lion leave the area and it has not been seen since. amanda: we are learning more about a near miss when two airplanes got dangerously close to each other at boston's logan airport in february.
