>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. >> a mystery in san jose after around 10:00 a.m. when san jose police went to do a welfare check at an apartment complex. now neighbors -- now neighbors are asking questions and wondering if they are in danger. >> now underway after san jose police found two people dead

inside an apartment. police say on friday morning, they were conducting a welfare check at the complex near interstate 280 when they made the discovery. >> i came back out to 24 san jose pd cars locking the street. four wer interviewing for different people. there were tears, so it had to be family. >> brandy is housesitting her sister's unit in the complex. she said residents received this message from property managers friday afternoon. it states -- vista strives to make all community a safe place to call home. in consideration of this incident, we have hired a 24-hour security service to provide for the safety of our residents. >> kind of like why or what happened. that's pretty much all that is going through our heads right now. >> police have no word on a suspect was said they will release more information in the coming days. >> it is a pretty big shot to

the community -- pretty big shock to the community. >> residents describe the community as quiet, nothing like this before. >> just be protective of yourself and your loved ones because anything like this can happen at any time. >> san jose police say these two deaths mark the 23rd and 24th homicides of the year. dan: we first sent out the alert about this story through the abc 7 news mobile app. it is one way to keep up with stories. as they come into our newsroom, we will pass them along to you immediately. ama: a large section of a fell down on bay street tailor the cable car turnaround. landed on top of two cars, of course causing damage. the street was temporarily closed off. the fire department says to expect delays. fortunately no one was injured.

the archdiocese of san francisco says it likely is going to go bankrupt as a result of hundreds of sexual abuse lawsuits it is facing. the diocese of oakland as well as santa rosa filed for bankruptcy earlier this year because of numerous lawsuits. we have been following the story since it broke this afternoon. >> after hundreds of lawsuits were filed by alleged sexual abuse victims, the archdiocese of san francisco saying it will likely go bankrupt. in a statement released friday, the archdiocese said several months with the assistance of your financial and legal advisors, we have in investigating the best options for managing and resolving these cases. after much contemplation and prayer, i wish to inform you that a chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization is very likely. >> they have hundreds of millions of dollars in property. if they are bankrupt, it is morally. >> news of the bankruptcy has frustrated people like this man who says he was sexually abused

as a child. he works with a group called snap, a surviving -- a survivors network of those abused by priests. one of the main worries being the delayed process of getting some form of justice for victims. >> everything stops for the bankruptcy proceeding. >> rick simmons is an attorney who currently represents around 75 people with sexual abuse cases. he says the bankruptcy filing would allow the archdiocese to deal with hundreds of cases collectively instead of one by one. >> i think the chance that they are not compensated at all is very low. the chance that they are not compensated fairly is very high. >> while the process plays out, many of the victims will be waiting, hoping one day to find closure and some sense of peace. >> the church is presenting itself as the person who is the victim here, and they are not. clearly they are not.

dan: evacuation has finally ended for people in san pablo after a hazmat situation that lasted more than three days. cleanup crews gave the all clear at 5:30 this evening. acid and explosives were found in bottles, vials, and various containers in a shed behind a home on stanton avenue. this was on wednesday they found the stuff. investigators had to process more than 600 different chemicals. neighbors say a man who lived in the home was a retired chemistry professor who recently passed away. it will take at least six months to get san francisco's chinatown rosebud subway station fully repaired. a week that started thursday shut down one side of the platform. the stairway is closed by the leak while the escalators and elevator to remain up and running. according to muni there have been no delays or disruptions because of this. the agency plans to give a temporary fix, injecting grout to stop the leak.

escape for a bay area church group from the west african country of niger during a military coup. the principle of the cornerstone christian center and school is hugely relieved to know that 15 church members, including his wife, daughter, and other in law, are safe. >> they were just so excited. my heart was in my throat. i shed so many sad tears, but today was happy tears. ama: their escape was doubtful when they got to the airport at 2:00 a.m. and found that her plane had no fuel. the offices of senator dianne feinstein and congressman john garamendi jumped into action along with the state department and changed that. dan: a freeway shooting in july has left an eight-year-old paralyzed from the neck down with medical bills that could top $1 million. a gofundme has been set up to help eight-year-old asa and his

family. asa was hit by a stray bullet as two cars were shooting at one another. youth alive, and oakland-based organization, works with families in the aftermath of gun violence. it and the community are stepping in to get asa the support he needs. >> the initial wave of interest and support in the is a great thing because it rallies community around this family. dan: asa needs a mechanical respirator to live, feeding tubes, and 24/7 nursing care, as you can imagine. you can find a link to his gofundme on our website. ama: that's heartbreaking. having now, all lanes of eastbound 80 shut down for the weekend. this is the second weekend of shutdowns so caltrans can repave the road. it stretches from highway four in hercules to the sky where. the bridge is still open.

one of approximately 50 are getting elderly asian families. the crimes may be connected to a small group of chemicals of -- small group of criminals according to law enforcement sources. dan: i of hand internal police memos that i cannot show to protect sources, but they provide information that allow me to track down some of the victims. this is one of the home invasions listed in police documents obtained by the i-team. monday of this week, an 80-year-old man and his 69-year-old wife are caring for their two grandchildren when robbers break in a second-floor window. >> one man was downstairs with my parents keeping an eye on them while the other was upstairs going through the safe, ransacking our closets, our bedrooms, looking for valuables. >> the men held the couple at gunpoint for nearly 40 minutes, a terrifying ordeal, their daughter tells me. >> during this time, my mother was trying to rush them out of the house, saying someone is going to be home soon, you need

targeting elder asian couples. the connected, committed by the same small group of criminals. this cinematographer had his front door pushed in two weeks ago. >> it was very loud. it was like an explosion. we thought something crazy happened on the street, but it was coming from inside the house. >> tony tells me one of the robbers chased him up the stairs with a knife, and he barricaded the bedroom door while his wife called 911. >> we were terrified, screaming the top of our lungs. >> the police arrived in minutes, but the criminals got away with $40,000 in camera gear. i told tony about the police alert that criminals are targeting homes owned by asian families. >> with asian hate crimes, it was already hard to exist as an agent in this community, and now it is even harder. >> i spoke with other victims on the list of home invasion

victims. they declined to be interviewed for fear of retaliation, but they want the information to get out. hopefully someone knows who these guys are and call the police. dan: let's hope so. a proposal to raise the tolls on bay area bridges by $1.50 to bailout struggling transit agencies is getting some pushback. state senator scott wiener is pushing an effort to increase tolls on all local bridges except the golden gate. a five-year increase, he says, is needed to prevent big cutbacks on bart and muni, but representatives and lawmakers represent in the bay area in washington have sent a letter to governor newsom expressing concern about such a large toll hike. i spoke with one congressman about his reservations about the proposed toll hike late this afternoon. >> always great to see you. thanks for coming on. >> my pleasure. thanks for asking me. >> why do you oppose it? >> i don't oppose it. the letter says we have

concerns. i understand the need to develop new revenue, but it is disproportionately affecting working people, raising the toll another $1.50 when it is about to go up by one dollar. it is really to dollars $.50. >> that extra dollar he mentioned is already scheduled to be added to the toll in 2025. he wants to see a full discussion on how to raise more revenue while at the same time looking at ways to improve the efficiency of bart and muni operations. ama: more than most cities to recover from the pandemic, but there's encouraging news from the comptroller's office. the latest data shows the city added 8400 jobs in revenue is steady at 75% at 2019 levels. >> during the grateful dead concert, cities hotels -- the city's hotels were packed. for every $100 spent in the hotels, $200 are spent

let me show you some live views from our tower cameras. all the views look amazing san francisco as we look down towards the santa cruz area, so let's check out what's happening . the sizzle returns as high pressure that has been bringing the summer swelter to the southern tier states shifts westward. we are going to notice our heat building at least in our inland areas as we head towards tomorrow. it was a warmer day today. in case you don't like the heat, let me show you this life picture from santa cruz where there is some fog and that fog is going to keep temperatures in check along the coast. mild to warm tomorrow afternoon. very high uv index. make sure you have your sunscreen with you. 64 ocean beach. ocean temperature is 54 degrees, so a little chilly. look at this amazing view. you can see the fog just hanging right over san francisco. that marine layer has compressed down to 1000 feet, so it will not advance very far.

warming trend continues this weekend. hottest day inland will be sunny with triple digits. we do have a little bit on live doppler 7, not a lot new the coast at this hour. 50 to 70's on your temperatures and as we check out a live view from my exploratorium camera, here is what you can expect. air quality will go from good today to good to moderate tomorrow and moderate for all areas sunday. if you are out and about, watch out. fire danger increasing around this time of year, especially in the afternoon/evening hours. notice this blue and yellow, which is moderate to high for inland communities, and that repeats again sunday. since we are on the topic of fires, the flat fire in oregon still continues to burn. thousands of acres. smoke from that fire with northwesterly wind flow may drift into our area in the upper parts of the atmosphere, so if you see a little haze in the air, don't be surprised by this. as we go hour-by-hour tomorrow morning starting with the fog,

ama: in south lake tahoe, hank the tank, a famously large female black bear, has been captured. the department of fish and wildlife says she will be relocated to a wildlife section where in colorado. dan: her three cubs were also captured to be taken to sonoma wildlife rescue. relocation is rare for the department, but given the public interest, they wanted to err the side of caution. fall apart? the conference of champions now down to just 4 teams. down to just 4 teams. my clothes look fresh but i need them to smell fresh, too. that's why i add downy unstopables to my wash. now i'll be smelling fresh all day long.

that cuts the steak daily, taste is gonna be very tender. marbling creates a lot of flavor and tenderness and obviously from the aging that we do, the three to four week aging, it just provides a perfect steak. ♪ ♪ we have extensive wine lists, almost a thousand selections on our wine list with great cocktails. the bar was brought in from chicago at the brunswick bar in our lounge area. so that's an attraction for people to start their meal off. so chef is my dad, and then my brother is the general manager, so we run the front of the house together. we come to work every day, and it does not feel like work. it's... hanging out with family. ♪ ♪ mrs. harris had a vision to open a place up. i started with day one with them. and the vision was to do dry age in-house, have our own butcher, which is really unique compared to a lot of restaurants,

and we specialize in steaks, and we have wagyu, we do seafood, we do nice light appetizers and great dessert menu. ♪ ♪ in 2004, i became part owner, and then in 2018, i became the sole owner. and then, fortunately, a year later, i bring my two sons in, and now my daughter-in-law is the pastry chef. every day since day one, i've always enjoyed what i'm doing. i still do. now, with the family coming in, it's even more motivation to keep the thing rolling. my dad's an absolute gem, and every single person here will tell you that they love him, they look up to him. he is an amazing role model for me and my brother, and the way he runs the restaurant is the way that we've incorporated our professionalism as well. so it's absolutely incredible.
