it's saturday, august 5. we will have more on our top story in the moment. we begin and they welcome back to lisa argen. >> thank you. glad to be back. we are bringing on the heat this first weekend of august. we have high pressure building that's set the stage for a sizzling weekend, especially inland, but as we get low clouds and fog are hanging around the coast. current temperatures are anywhere from 50 in novato to low 60's around palo alto. that brings us from a few degrees cooler to warmer this morning. santa cruz. the beach will be nice. air quality is getting worse. it will be good in the north bay but moderate elsewhere as the heat begins to allow for some hades. we have a fire to the north in oregon. that could allow for haze.

the 23rd and 24th homicides of the year. lauren martinez, abc7news. >> our neighborhood safety tracker is available to give you a picture of public safety where you live. the tool shows a wide range of data for san jose, san francisco and oakland. you can find it on the front page of abc7news.com. in oakland, there still is not a police chief, but people living there are given the opportunity to weigh in on the qualities they think should be considered. the police commission is holding the first of five public forums. oakland has been without a chief since lauren armstrong was fired in february. today's forum starts at 10:30 a.m. at the golden gate branch library. the police commission will select four candidates for the job and send the list to the mayor, who will make the final decision. in san francisco now, take a look at this. a large tree came crashing down

onto multiple cars, leaving some damage. this happened at bay street and taylor near the cable car turnaround. the street was temporarily closed off last night and no one was hurt. developing now, the archdiocese of san francisco says it will likely go bankrupt following hundreds of sexual abuse lawsuits. the diocese of oakland as well as santa rosa filed for bankruptcy because of numerous lawsuits. tim johns shows us how people are reacting. >> after hundreds of lawsuits were filed, there diocese of san francisco saying it will likely go bankrupt. in a statement released friday, the archdiocese said, for several months now, we have been investigating the best options for managing and resolving these cases. after much contemplation and prayer, i wish to inform you that a chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization is likely. >> they have hundreds of

millions of dollars in property. they are not bankrupt. if they are, it is morally. >> the news has frustrated people like joey. he says he was sexually abused as a child. he now works with a group called snap with a survivors network. >> the potential filing causes several worries for him. one of the main ones being the delayed process of getting some form of justice for victims. >> everything stops during the bankruptcy proceeding. >> rick simmons is an attorney who currently represents around 75 people with sexual abuse cases. he says if it happens the bankruptcy filing will allow the archdiocese to deal with the cases collectively instead of one by one. >> the chance they are not compensated at all is low. the chance that they are not compensated fairly is high. >> while the process plays out,

he says many of the victims will be waiting, hoping one day to find closure and some sense of peace. >> the church is presenting itself as the person who is the victim here and they are not. clearly they are not. >> in san francisco, tim johns, abc7news. >> in the east bay, some people are finally back home after being evacuated because of a hazmat situation lasting over three days. cleanup crews gave the all clear yesterday evening. explosives will found in bottles and containers in a shed behind a home on stanton avenue earlier this week. investigators had a process more than 600 different chemicals. neighbors say the man who lived in the home was a retired chemistry professor who recently passed away. it will take at least six months to get san francisco's china town subway stations reopened. the stairway and area is closed

but the escalators and elevator are running. according to muni, there have been no displays ordered -- there have been no delays or disruptions. a freeway shooting in july h left an eight-year-old boy paralyzed from the neck down with medical bills that could top $1 million. a gofundme has been set up to help asa and his family. he was hit by a stray bullet on 580 in oakland as two cars were shooting at one another. youth alive, an oakland based organization, works with families in the aftermath of gun violence. the organizations and community are stepping in to get him the support he needs. >> the initial wave of interest and support with him, i think, is a great thing it's rallying the community around this family. >> heartbreaking. asa needs a mechanical

>> terrifying moment as an 80-year-old man had a gun to his back in his home. one of nearly 50 targeting elderly asian families in the oakland hills. law enforcement tells us the crimes may be connected to a small group of criminals. here's the i-team's dan noyes with the story you will only see on seven. >> i obtained internal police memos i cannot show to protect the sources but they provided information that allowed me to track down some of the victim. this is one of the home invasions listed in police documents obtained by the i-team. monday of this week, an 80-year-old man and 60 years -- and 69-year-old wife were at home when robbers broken. >> one was keeping an eye on my

parents while the other was trying to get into our safe, ransacking our closet, bedrooms, looking for valuables. >> the men held the couple at gunpoint for nearly 40 minutes, a terrifying ordeal. >> during this time, my mom was trying to rush them out of the house by saying someone will be home soon. my son-in-law will be at work. she offered them cash and said if what you're looking for his cash, here's cash. please don't hurt any of us. >> the criminals got away with $10,000 in cash and jewelry. the family had three other attempt at home invasions and with each one they take a new security precaution. the fence, the cameras, the dog, a german shepherd. he did not stop the criminals. >> what's his name? >> you have to do your job. >> officials at the oakland police department will not provide anyone to help with

these issues, saying they are part of an ongoing investigation, but privately sources tell me they are upset about the crime spree and want the story told. sources gave me a copy of an internal advisory that says opd has a series of approximately 50 212.5, first-degree robberies, targeting asian hose -- targeting asian homes in the oakland hills area. incidents appear to be connected, committed by the same group of criminals. this photographer had his doorpost in two weeks ago. >> it was very loud. it was like an explosion. we thought something crazy happened but it was coming from inside the house. >> tony tells me one of the robbers chased him up the stairs with a knife and barricaded the bedroom door while his wife called 911. we were terrified, screaming, hoping someone would hear us. >> the police arrived within minutes for the criminals got away with $40,000 in camera

they say their first and fourth minute rights were violated. when plaintiff says he lost his eye during the demonstrations when an officer shot him with a rubber projectile. sjpd admitted the officers were not properly trained in crowd control because of understaffing. your drive across bay area bridges could go up $1.5. it's a proposal getting pushback from state leaders. scott weiner is backing an effort to increase tolls on all local bridges except the golden gate. he says the five-year increase is needed to prevent big cutbacks on b.a.r.t. and muni. some people sent a letter expressing their concern. dan ashley spoke with a congressman about his reservations. >> why do you oppose that? >> i do not. the letter says we have concerns. i understand the need to develop new revenue but it's disproportionately affecting working people.

day. we had patchy fog at the coast and even some mist and drizzle. you may need wipers if you are out early by the shoreline. our marine layer is certainly compressed down to about 1000 feet, so that's allowing for that mist and drizzle. . here's the wider picture you will notice the dark area offshore, high-pressure building on in. it's 57 in san ramon and dublin, with temperatures cooling. mount diablo, 71, and as we look closer, you can see the fog from pacifica to half moon bay. it's going to stay comfortable at the coast, so if you don't like the heat both days, you can head to the shoreline, although it will be warming up. there is a look at emeryville. it continues to the weekend. tomorrow is the hottest day and looking for triple digits on sunday. we should be shy of that. mild weather at the coast with that fog from time to time

>> the u.s. job market has slowed and economists believe it could help avoid a recession. over 180 7000 jobs were added last month and unemployment dropped to 3.5%. industries who saw the largest boosts our health care, social assistance, financial activities and wholesale trade. economists say businesses have slowed down on hiring, which could curb inflation. however, a new fitch rating dropped the nation's credit rating. san francisco has certainly struggled more than most cities to recover from the pandemic but there's some encouraging news from the controller's office. the data shows the city added 8400 jobs in june. tech is driving the growth but leisure and hospitality jobs are also making a comeback. hotel revenue is steady at 75% of 2019 levels. recent concerts played a big role. >> the grateful dead concert.

the league has been in existence for 108 years. everybody else bolt greener pastures. greener as in straight cash money. the previous pac-12 commissioner, larry scott, along with the current boss deserve a lot of the blame, but this is what happens when you hire two guys with no experience in college athletics. it was a series of bad and then worse and catastrophic decisions leading to the state. the inability to land a lucrative tv deal kills the conference. oregon and washington joined the big ten. the arizona schools joined utah and the big 12, along with colorado. what about cal and stanford? maybe the big ten would add them, but why? the tv market? i don't know. maybe they go to the mountain west but most of the options look pretty bleak. onto the baseball series.
