two deaths of legionnaires' disease. we will have more on our top story in a moment. first, we begin with the weather and a hot day. >> first, we will look doppler 7. the collecti, offshore. temperatures in the 70's. it is dry. we are looking at a north wind easing in the upper elevations. that will allow us to warm up quickly. temperatures in the 50's in the cool spots to the 70's. downtown, no fog to speak of. we will look for it to return late in the day. no fog on the golden gate bridge.

near 100 throughout the afternoon. stephanie: thank you. a day spa in richmond is raising public health concerns after two people died of legionnaires disease they allegedly caught at the spot. now we are learning the business was operating without permits. reporter: the zen richmond shut down after two cases linked to legionnaires disease. reporter: the county supervisor says the third man tested positive in june but the other two died this week after visiting days before. county health officials are trying to track down others who visited as well. >> we are trying to secure things like credit card receipts and appointment books as a way to get in touch with folks who might have been here. reporter: the bacteria found in water.

it can grow and spread in human-made water systems such as hot tubs and swimming pools. >> it lives in water droplets, especially in situations where there might be cooling of water. it allows the bacteria to grow. when that is aerosolized, that is when an individual can inhale it. >> that is what happened here. a closed room with water vaporizing. there is a waterfall that comes out of the hot tub. there was a lot of steam in the room. that is why the risk here it was so great. reporter: public health officials stress it is treatable. incubation following exposure is typically two to 14 days. that is why public health officials are asking anyone who visited the spa over the last two weeks to get tested. >> we are working with the facility to collect samples so we can test those and see if it has the same strain of bacteria.

we should have preliminary results next week. reporter: the supervisor says the spa may have been operating illegally by not having a business permit or a permit for a hot tub. >> whether there was criminal negligence is up to the district attorney. this is the kind of matter we would also ask the district attorney to look at. reporter: the business owners could not be reached for comment but county health officials say they are cooperating. stephanie: the last known cases of legionnaires' disease in the bay area were diagnosed last august in san jose. the couple from long beach contracted the sickness after staying at the alof hotelt. both were treated and survived. county officials traced the bacteria to the hotel's hot tub. abc 7 is keeping you updated with alerts like the one on your screen sent out last night. to get updates like this on

footage released along with the names of the officer and deputy. the alameda county sheriff's office said shots were fired during a confrontation where he tried taking the chp officer's gun during the scuffle. >> the officers that killed him that night, are they still working? are they still in the community? had they been put on suspension? we have no idea. stephanie: they also took part in a memorial bike ride to the location where the shooting happened. oakland is ramping up efforts to find the next police chief. in the first of five different forums, community members spoke about what they are looking for in a new chief. >> i think we need someone who is extremely brave, fearless, and truthful. reporter: there were lots of ideas about what qualities oakland's next police chief should have. >> that person has to realize this is a difficult job. reporter: a small but vocal group at a community forum hosted by the oakland police

community to let the public way in about the next leader. >> we want to get input as to what kind of chief the community wants to see and what priorities they want that chief to undertake. reporter: priorities like reducing crime. opd says since january, a violent crime is up 15% compared to the same time last year. >> he's got to have an understanding of what crime is, how it works, where it comes from, how you deal with it. reporter: others want the next chief to reflect the values of oakland. >> whoever the chief's, male or female, they have to have a passion for the people. reporter: oakland have been without a chief since february when he was fired after an independent investigation found he failed to hold some officers accountable for misconduct. some businesses that have been a target of recent reagan site this dispensary are standing up against crime and sounding off about the next police chief.

>> standing with the community, letting them know we are still here. reporter: thieves broken last sunday and stole product. they are holding a solidarity event with the donut shop that was also hit. she says the next chief should lead with responsibility. >> i don't know if the police ever showed up. i know they took a police report but i do not know if it was that day. reporter: after the forums, the commission will select four candidates. the list will be sent to the mayor who will make the final decision. stephanie: take a look at this. significant progress made on the clayton fire in san jose. calfire confirms brush fire is 97% contained after burning 68 acres. sky 7 was overhead when the flames broke out thursday in unincorporated santa clara county. officials say there were some evacuations related to the fire but no structures were damaged and no one was hurt.

san mateo county residents are partnering with first responders to ensure they are ready in case of emergency. it was for disaster preparedness day. the goal is to teach residents about performing things like cpr, wildfire preparedness, and how to deal with the unthinkable if it were to happen. first responders want to make sure all citizens know how to help. >> whether you are dealing with people or looking to save a life or just helping out with traffic, be present and be in there. that is where it counts. reporter: families -- stephanie: families also had the opportunity to tour emergency response vehicles. a hot one today. let's check in with lisa. lisa: good morning. 68 degrees. upper 70's. yesterday into the 80's today. the hottest day is today on sunday.

everywhere in waymo cars driving around san francisco. some question if the autonomous are interfering with public s■afety. utilities commission is holding a meeting tomorrow to discuss robo taxis getting in the way of first responders. the taxi workers alliance is planning to protest at the meeting hoping to stop the commission from lifting the current restrictions on autonomous vehicles. the alliance says the cars suffer mass breakdowns, create street blockages, and interfere with police and firefighters. the rally and protest begins at 11:30 a.m. outside the offices at 505 mcallister st. it is back-to-school time. thanks to the samaritan house, nearly 3000 bay area students have a new backpack and school supplies. this is the annual backpack giveaway in san mateo. organizers say the event is crucial as some families are still recovering from the financial effects of the pandemic. >> post-pandemic, everybody thinks the world has gone back

registration week at oakland high school. >> kids are going to come in. we are going to check that online registration is happening. we will take i.d. pictures and they will get schedules today. reporter: a little more than 1600 students are expected to show up with their parents to confirm enrollment. she told us she hopes her senior year sees no interruptions like previous years. >> hopefully, nothing to do with covid and striking and anything. reporter: the teacher strike started in early may and kept students away from the classroom for nearly two weeks. >> when you interrupt the pace of the scheduling and instruction and interactions, kids struggle, teachers struggle. reporter: the principal says the school plans on maximizing instructional time to make up for lost days. >> this is about getting into the classroom and starting to work in getting people back into

you don't normally see afternoon highs in the 80's. we will be three to four degrees warmer than yesterday today for sunday. as we go to our back to school forecast for oakland unified, you noticed temperatures will be cool in the morning. 7:00, 50 degrees. low clouds and fog returning for a breezy afternoon revealing mostly sunny skies and highs in the 70's. that is more like it. we will lose five to seven degrees for monday afternoon in oakland and many communities around the bay. the northerly winds are with us again. that is going to allow for a quick warm-up. high-pressure has built in from the south. as we look live from our emeryville camera, it is clear and we have haze. moderate air quality throughout the bay area today. with the northerly wins, a little bit of haze being dragged down reducing visibility in the morning hours with a little bit of fog.

reporter: the felt by many but hard to solve. to find solutions, y the country are making their voices heard. >> the next generation of industry builders, many of whom are younger and reside in silicon valley have come here from elsewhere and are a lot more conscious of social impact. reporter: some local groups are being recognized for contributions. organizations with local ties are three of the 26th youth led initiatives nationwide who received a first of its kind grant from the use power fund in an effort to build a more accountable technology ecosystem. >> it was empowering for young people help build and it validates the work they are doing. >> because we are where silicon valley is, there is a feeling we need to do this work.

to see that we are receiving grant funding, it is good to know in the fight for more equitable digital environment, young people can do the work. reporter: some of the grant winners received a call from prince harry and meghan markle. >> thank you for doing everything you do. our kids are incredibly grateful. >> they do not know it yet but they will. >> my reaction was immediate shock. it was an honor. reporter: these youth-led groups have seen the good and bad impacts technology can have. she hopes this grant can be a launching point to make a difference in the world of technology, especially ai. >> there are immense risks but also immense opportunities. we can only make sure ai is carefully governed if we have young people at the table because our generation has grown up as the most hyper-connected yet. stephanie: still to come, the former president faces a new

criticized nuclear weapons. in the bay area, a group of protesters gather in the east bay every year to honor the lives lost in the bombing. tri-valley cares is a nuclear watchdog group pushing for change at the local level. the group's name stands for communities against a radioactive environment. >> we are using it as a way to bring attention to the work that happens at livermore lab to the public. a lot of people do not realize livermore still 90% of the budget is devoted to nuclear weapons development. stephanie: protesters on friday honored a longtime activist who leaked the pentagon papers in 1971. on the peninsula, a nonprofit giving the happy honk award to city official for their choice to use nonlethal methods to manage the geese population. officials decided to coexist with the nearly 100 canadian geese in the area.

the decision comes after previous plans to kill the geese over health risks saved backlash. now to the planned debate between ron desantis and governor gavin newsom. desantis said his counterproposal to set the ground rules for the show down yesterday. he wants a live studio audience for the debate, something gavin newsom's team does not. he wanted to be held in iowa or georgia. newsom's team other states. both appear to want the debate to happen in the fall. marches continue for the professional dancer who was stabbed and killed in what authorities believe is a hate crime. the 17-year-old suspect has been charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. authorities say he was station in brooklyn when a group of men shouted gay slurs. the incident led to a dispute and he was stabbed. he will be laid to rest in

the competition has been around since 2006. the same team that started it was behind the event yesterday. also at the event, reach frisbee, costume contests, and pet adoptions. you can see everyone in the ocean having fun with their dogs. the owner's dog collected. amazing to see all the families cannot for the fun event. they have inspired similar serve dog -- surf dog events across the world. mclaren park sounded like the 1960's this weekend. >> ♪ spend the night stephanie: lots of fun. a huge turnout to pay respects to san francisco's native son and music icon jerry garcia. the event brought together a lot of music lovers and deadheads to enjoy some of his classic hits.

we are told it was followed by at least 11 different neighborhood after parties. not surprising. in the north bay, one neighborhood is pushing back against hateful flyers left on doorsteps last week. some kids are turning the hate speech around by creating their own messages of love and acceptance. cornell barnard tells us how they are building a better bay area. >> this way. reporter: these friends say all began with a blank piece of paper. an idea sparked by an ugly neighborhood incident. >> it made me feel super sad. why would someone do that? reporter: recently, players were left on doorsteps containing anti-semitic language. this security camera caught one flyer landing in their driveway last saturday night, tossed from a passing car. >> i felt really bad. why would somebody do that? that is mean and sad.

reporter: she and her sister and friend were so upset that they decided to push back with multicolored markers. >> we decided we were going to make like flyers tha of the opposite of what they were saying, so we wanted to make a difference. reporter: here's what the girls created. poster after poster with positive words and images. the next step for the girls, they took to the streets canvassing the same neighborhoods where these flyers were left. >> people can see it while they are walking by. reporter: they even reached out to neighbors. >> here are some flyers for you. reporter: the same neighbors who received the racist flyers. >> "everyone should be included." reporter: their dad's impressed by what they did. >> have to say i was pretty proud. >> it is a learning opportunity for the kids and the kids get to turn it around and show some
