right now, here in birmingham things are starting to warm up. but when you factor into the humidity is when you start to feel it. take a look from california to georgia and southern florida. we have heat alerts, excessive heat warnings including heat advisories, and if you look at the temperatures today, these are actual high temperatures that you're looking at right now, triple digits, and i want you to pick a city, any city on the map. i'm going to go for dallas, 107. look what happens when you incorporate that moisture and that humidity. it feels much hotter, like 112 degrees in dallas, 106 in montgomery, alabama, even 106 down towards miami. something interesting is happening here, though. we have the heat to the south. we have some very cool air to the north. 60s and 70s in areas like cheyenne and in mitchell, omaha, nebraska. when we see that heat to the south, that cool air to the north, together, they're coming together to develop that severe weather in the middle, so as we move through the ohio valley,

the tennessee valley today, this afternoon, more severe thunderstorms, damaging winds, large hail, and the threat for isolated tornadoes that then moves east on your monday. janai. >> janai: oh, somara, you said pick a city, any city, and they all had heat. thank you so much. we'll check back in with you in just a second. to politics now and former president trump fresh off his third criminal indictment back on the campaign trail, but his team facing a setback in court. abc's maryalice parks joins us now live from columbia, south carolina. good morning, maryalice. >> reporter: janai, good morning. it's been the go-to tactic of the trump legal team to try to delay on all court proceedings and motions, but this weekend we saw the judge in this new case about trump's alleged efforts to overthrow the election say no and stick to her deadline setting up some very interesting legal questions right out of the gate. trump's legal team this morning facing a setback. judge tanya chutkan denying trump's initial request to delay proceedings in the new case about his alleged attempts to

illegally dismiss votes and stay in power. the special counsel's office asked the court for a protective order pointing to trump's recent social media posts arguing the former president might disclose evidence or even intimidate witnesses. judge chutkan giving the trump team until monday until 5:00 p.m. to respond and sticking to that deadline. one of trump's political action committees spending more than $21 million this year on legal fees. ♪ trump himself on the campaign trail overnight publicly bashing the special counsel. >> we call it a sham indictment and, you know, the man that's doing it, i really believe he's mentally ill. >> reporter: trump also calling on republicans in congress, specifically senate minority leader mitch mcconnell, to, quote, do something to help him with his legal troubles or go after biden instead. >> they got to step up. >> reporter: trump supporters in the crowd quick to deflect and defend. >> i think he could run the country in jail.

>> all of that is a cover-up. it's a cover-up for biden. >> reporter: some even dismissing the violence at the capitol on january 6th. >> it was most patriotic day i've ever seen in my life. >> yes. >> reporter: though he's enjoying high poll numbers, trump is facing a crowded primary field. trump supporters heckling former vice president mike pence on the campaign trail for not going along with trump's alleged scheme to stop the certification of the election. >> why didn't you uphold the constitution? >> i upheld the constitution. >> no, you didn't. >> reporter: and florida governor ron desantis this weekend urging trump to show up and debate at the end of this month. >> i don't know what his insight is on it. i think at the end of the day you've got to earn this nomination. >> reporter: and we did talk to some republican voters at this event who told us they worry that all these charges are making it hard for some of the other republican candidates to break through and get their message out, and, remember,

there could be even more criminal charges coming out of georgia later this month. >> janai: maryalice, that's what i want to ask you about. what more do we know about the timing of this pending trump indictment in fulton county, georgia? >> reporter: yeah, a lot of speculation that could be coming in the next few weeks, and this is interesting. last week, a judge in georgia just blasted trump's team for trying to essentially squash the entire investigation. that judge wrote that, while it might be an unwelcome experience to be a target of a criminal investigation, that was not reason enough for a court to interfere with any investigation. janai. >> janai: target of multiple investigations. all right, maryalice, thank you so much. and tune in to "this week" later this morning. george stephanopoulos interviews donald trump's attorney, john lauro, about the former president's legal defense strategy in the case over his alleged efforts to overturn the election, plus george speaks with house democratic caucus chair pete aguilar, who served on the house january 6th committee. whit. >> whit: janai, now to the war in ukraine. the black sea quickly becoming the latest battleground in the conflict with russian shipping under increased attack.

abc's chief foreign correspondent ian pannell joins us now from kyiv with the latest. ian, good morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, whit. that's right as to the black sea but also deep inside russian territory itself, another drone attack on moscow this morning forcing one of the city's airports to temporarily close. a russian ministry defense saying air defenses successfully shot down what they claim was a ukrainian uav. no response at the moment from the ukrainians. the kremlin though vowing retaliation after this series of recent drone attacks on its ships in the black sea. the foreign ministry labeling the strikes barbaric actions that won't go unanswered. video circulating online appearing to show a sea drone though packed with a half ton of explosives approaching a russian oil tanker. the video ends when the drone hits the ship, but by far, of course, the vast bulk are from russia to ukraine. and again, overnight, russian strikes targeting military and civilian sites overnight. president zelenskyy releasing these videos saying that it was an attack by russia on a blood

transfusion center, and while the war grinds on, this morning, representatives of up to 40 nations are continuing to meet in saudi arabia to discuss a peaceful end to the conflict. delegations from ukraine, the u.s., china, india are all there. russia not invited. the kremlin says it's keeping a close eye on it but for now, guys, it looks more like war than peace. will. >> will: we'll all be keeping an eye on those crucial talks. ian, thank you. we're going to stay overseas now and to the investigation into the deadly boating accident in italy that killed an american woman when the rented motorboat she was in with her family hit a chartered sailboat. authorities now keying in on the motorboat's captain, and abc's lama hasan joins us with the latest. lama, good morning. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, will. this truly is horrific and heartbreaking. the american family of four were on a vacation of a lifetime in italy, which was suddenly and tragically cut short, and now investigators are racing to piece together what happened on the day of the crash. ♪

this morning, an idyllic family vacation turning to tragedy for one american family as italian officials are now investigating what caused their motorboat to crash off the amalfi coast. >> what happened? >> a ship collided with us. >> reporter: passengers aboard this sailing ship at first were celebrating a wedding then stopped when they realized the motorboat had slammed into its side. >> oh, my gosh. >> reporter: u.s. publishing executive adrienne vaughan who was on that motorboat dying from her injuries. according to italian media, the sheer force of the collision pushed the 45-year-old overboard. after falling into the water, she was hit by the boat's propeller. >> jesus christ. >> reporter: two doctors who were on the sailboat dove in to water to help vaughan while a nearby vessel brought her to shore. in her ambulance rushing to rescue her, but she was pronounced dead on the scene. vaughan was on vacation with her husband mike white and their two children. miraculously her husband and children surviving the accident. vaughan was the president of

bloomsbury publishing u.s. the publishing house confirmed her death in a statement calling her an extraordinary human being. now, the amalfi port authority launching an immedaite investigation. in italian, prosecutors saying that this skipper is being investigated for suspected manslaughter adding that the results of his toxicology test are now being evaluated. janai. >> janai: oh, my gosh, just an unbelievable tragedy. lama, thank you for that update. back here at home now to yet another tragedy, the terrifying crash in idaho where a bus carrying teenage campers rolled over leaving seven in critical condition. abc's zohreen shah is in boise this morning and learning more about a good samaritan who rushed in to help. zohreen, good morning. >> reporter: janai, we're learning more about what happened to those kids. a trauma surgeon at this hospital telling me that some of the kids came in unconscious and

they had to check them for brain injuries. luckily she says the ones who came here only had fractures, broken bones, and scrapes, and she says all of them are expected to make it, but this morning, the question still looming, how did this happen? this morning, investigators are still trying to figure out what caused that school bus full of campers to roll over and crash on a highway injuring 11 teens. >> the school bus is turned over in both lanes of travel. we have multiple units en route. and multiple ambulances. >> reporter: this morning, a good samaritan detailing the moments after an idaho bus full of teens overturned just feet away from her car. >> as i approached the scene and realized that multiple kids were being helped out of the bus, i just snapped into kind of solution fix-it mode. >> reporter: just over 30 teens and staff members were heading home from a week-long ymca summer camp when their bus rolled over while coming down a winding idaho highway one hour north of boise leaving seven in critical condition. >> it is confirmed to be a school bus out of caldwell.

it is lying across the highway and he is reporting injuries. >> reporter: the driver jumping in before first responders arrived. >> there were so many people passing out band-aids and gauze. many of the kids were having anxiety and panic attacks. >> reporter: and this morning, we're learning at least two people remain at one of the hospitals. this trauma surgeon treated some of the kids and says recovery will not be easy. >> i think a lot of these children are going to need a lot of psychological counseling to deal with the trauma, the emotional trauma of what happened to them. >> reporter: and i spoke to the president and ceo of the local ymca and he tells me they have counseling for anyone who needs it, and there was a camp session that was supposed to start in the same location, but they are now canceling it. he says they really want the counselors to heal from what they experienced. whit. >> whit: thank you. we turn now to portugal and pope francis wrapping up his five-day trip there and greeted by massive crowds.

abc's ines de la cuetara joins us now from portugal. ines, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, whit, and the pope wrapping up his time here at world youth day which is a five-day event held for catholic youth and it's been often described as a catholic woodstock. it certainly feels that way here, with over 1.5 million people braved the heat last night to come see pope francis. this trip was the pope's first trip since he underwent abdominal surgery back in june, and even though he is 86 years old and has been using a wheelchair, he does appear to be rejuvenated here. going off script and really trying to connect with young people. in one powerful moment also urging young people to yell back at him that the church is a place for everyone. pope francis is really trying to do a lot to bring young people back to the catholic church amid questions regarding the church's waning relevance, and as he looks ahead to the future, there are also questions as to

the church's past, the past hanging over all of this too with an independent commission here in portugal finding that close to 5,000 boys and girls were abused by members of the catholic church since the 1950s and the pope meeting with some of those victims earlier this week. the pope today presiding over mass. some people here camping out overnight to get a good spot to see him. he heads back to the vatican later today. janai. >> janai: all right, ines, thank you. live there from catholic woodstock. >> will: 1.5 million people in portugal. we'll take a turn now and time for the weather and somara theodore. hi, somara. >> somara: good morning, will. we have another threat for severe weather today. let's jump right into this, and take a look at this video from colorado where we have a funnel cloud developing. not only that, but they saw 80-mile-per-hour wind gusts in colorado, and golf ball-size hail that injured folks. that threat for severe weather continuing to loom now moving through the tennessee valley. here is a timestamp. 3:00 a.m. monday morning eastern time, so that means a lot of these storms are happening overnight. as a result, we could see

damaging wind, large hail, and isolated tornadoes from cincinnati to huntsville, alabama, to right here in birmingham where i am, and then tomorrow that threat shifts east for the i-95 corridor from the delmarva peninsula, the dmv, down into atlanta including charlotte, roanoke, you have an enhanced risk of damaging winds, tornadoes and large hail all >> somara: and, as i mentioned, a lot of these storms impacting the tennessee valley, parts of ohio, kentucky are happening overnight, so make sure you have

morning. that mom is still behind bars but we're learning more about why she was arrested in the first place. this morning, explosive new details in the alleged murder-for-hire plot involving a georgia mother of three, 36-year-old lindsay shiver is accused of conspiring to kill her estranged husband while vacationing in the bahamas. >> last but not least i want to thank me. >> reporter: according to new court documents, shiver had sent photos of her husband robert shiver, to alleged would-be hit man faron newbold jr. along with the message, kill him. authorities claiming the mom later admitted in interrogation she did, indeed, send those text messages. police first learned about the alleged plot when a cell phone was discovered during an unrelated break-in. officers discovering messages allegedly detailing the plot to kill between shiver and her two suspected co-conspirators. court documents show the shivers were in the middle of a messy divorce after 13 years of marriage with robert citing adultress conduct and lindsay

accusing him of physical and mental cruelty and acts of domestic violence. >> that has nothing to do with from the standpoint of did she plot with two other people to kill her husband? that evidence is going to be -- carry the biggest weight. >> reporter: in the past shiver often posting on social media about what she described as the couple's perfect relationship. in 2020 writing, the key to a perfect marriage is having two imperfect people who refuse to give up on each other. now shiver is expected to be released on bail come tuesday, her two co-conspirators have already been released on $20,000 bail, and robert shiver's family spokesperson and the attorney for all three defendants say there are no statements at this time. lindsay is due in court august 9th. whit. >> whit: thank you. now to a man spending more than 24 hours stranded at sea. it was an intense search until the coast guard found him, and abc's alex presha has reaction from the man's family who

him on shore. the coast guard says they began searching for charles on friday evening after he was last seen leaving a boat ramp thursday. >> not the kind of vessel you want to be on in an off-shore environment. and that's why, you know, kind of the odds were starting to be against us despite all of our search effort. >> reporter: by saturday morning a coast guard plane spotted him. >> i tell you what, the water community here in st. augustine have come together. >> reporter: his father grateful to be reunited with his son. >> our tax dollars were very well spent today. it's a miracle. there's a god up there. if you ever let your kid go offshore, i gave up hope. i should never give up hope. >> reporter: this rescue comes on the heels of another one in late july, this time off the georgia coast. two men airlifted from the water. you can see the basket spinning as they're pulled up to safety. the boat they were in capsized about four miles from jekyll island. the coast guard says miraculously none of the men in any of these rescues needed medical attention but it also says the southeast is prone to these powerful storms that can capsize smaller boats, which means it is important to have an emergency plan in place

building a better bay area moving forward, finding solutions. this is abc7 news. good morning. >> i'm stephanie sierra. the california public utilities commission is holding a meeting tomorrow to discuss robots taxes getting in the way of first responders. the san francisco taxi workers alliance is planning to protest at that meeting hoping to stop the commission from lifting the current restrictions on autonomous vehicles. now the alliance says these cars suffer mass breakdowns, create street blockages and interfere with police and firefighters in pacific, ca. these pups taking to the tide. look at this. the waves weren't too rough for these dogs you see at the world dog surfing championships. a lot of fun out there. the competition cars have been around since 2006. and the same team who started it was behind the event yesterday. also at the beach there was ball fetch, beach frisbee costume contests and pet adoptions. you see lots of fun in the ocean there. these competitions have inspired
