first meteorologist lisa argen is your tracking a hot one today. lisa: super hot. nice in the city and by the bay temperatures are heating up with a layer of fog along the coast that will put away temporarily. what a gorgeous view here at the golden gate bridge. very little wind. 58 downtown. 66 oakland, upper 60's mt. palo alto. fog and 57 at half moon bay. you can see a little bit of a dean is out there, 64 santa rosa, upper 60's, novato, napa, low 70's concorde and evermore. another 30 degrees of warming for the inland valleys. we are to-seven degrees warmer compared to yesterday. northerly wind above 2000 feet. those are helping he does up quickly. through the next couple hours of that. 80's, 90's, near 100 by 1:00. but, it's only a one-day event, stephanie. i will explain in a few minutes. stephanie: lisa, thank you. new this morning a sideshow left

three people hurt and a car submerged in water in contra costa county. this video just into our newsroom. you can see the car getting towed out of the water. a sideshow happened at the antioch marina in smiths landing parking lot late saturday night. ending with the submerged car. another driver crashed in the parking lot and broke a fire hydrant. you can see here. a third driver from the sideshow crashed near 10th and g streets. 10 people were injured and were taken to the hospital. it's unclear if the third driver was injured in the crash. new details this morning. a day spa in richmond is raising public health concerns after two people died of legionnaires' disease. they likely caught it at the spa. now we are learning the business was also operating without permits. here is the abc7news anser hassan. >> the zen days shot in richmond shot down by public is officials following two deaths linked to

legionnaires' disease. >> two individuals have died. the third individual survived. supervisor says the third man tested positive in june but the other two died these -- this week after visiting the spot days before. county health officials are trying to track down others that visited the spot. >> we are trying to secure things like credit card receipts and appointment books to get in touch with people that might have been here. anser: legionella bacteria is found in water like legs and streams but concerns arise when the bacteria appear in hot tubs or swimming bills -- swimming pools. >> the bacteria lives in water droplets, especially in situations where there might be pooling water. that allows the bacteria to grow and when the water is aerosolized and individual can inhale it into their lungs. >> that is what happen here. a closed room in water that was

vaporizing. there is a little waterfall that comes out of the hot top. obviously, there is a lot of steam in the room. that is why the risk here was so great. anser: public health officials emphasize legionnaires' disease is treatable. the incubation. -- incubation following exposure is 2-14 days. officials are asking anybody who visited the spot the last two weeks to get tested. >> we are collecting samples to see if it hasn't the same strain of bacteria that infected the people that were here. we will have for limitary results later next week. anser: these farm may have been operating illegally by not having a business permit or a permit for a hot top. -- october. >> why there is any criminal negligence is up to the district attorney. >> business owners cannot be reached for comment but county health officials say the owners

are cooperating in the investigation. in richmond, anser hassan, abc7news. stephanie: the last known case of legionnaires' disease in the bay area were diagnosed last august in san jose. it was a couple from long beach that contracted the sick as at their sickness after staying at the aloft hotel. both were treated at a hospital and survived. in that case ended care of county health officials traced the bacteria to the hotel hot tub. you details on the group of east bay missionaries that were stranded in niger doing a military coup. we can report this morning the church members are now back on u.s. soil. tara campbell shares the truly emotional reunion. >> waiting for his family to appear through these doors at the oakland international airport. his wife, daughter, and father in law among 15 people caught in a military coup while

volunteering at bible schools in niger. the majority of them from four star christian school in antioch where logan is the principal. the group escaped on a plane to paris friday. with family and friends by their side, the moment they have been praying for. happiness. my family is safe. the last seven days have been awful. >> i was just so excited to see everybody. we have been sitting on the plane for a little bit. super excited to be here. tara: was there a moment you feared he would not get out? >> no. i knew we would make it back because i knew the lord had us in his hands the entire time. i know that our family and

in the east bay now a deadly law enforcement shooting last month is prompting demand for the release of body camera footage. a group rallied yesterday afternoon at heritage plaza to remember the man shot and killed by a chp officer and and allegheny county sheriff's deputy near san leandro in july. shots were fired during a confrontation where he tried taking the chp officers done during a scuffle. >> the officers that killed him that night, are they still working? are they still in the community or have they been sent off suspension? we have no idea. stephanie: they took part in a memorial bike ride to the location where the shooting happened. oakland is still without a police chief but is rapping about first to find one. in the first five community forums members and residents spoke about what they are looking for in a new chief. cornell barnard was there. >> we need somebody extremely

brave. fearless, truthful. cornell: there were lots of ideas about what qualities the next oakland police chief should have. >> this person should realize it's a very difficult job. cornell: a small but vocal group at the first community form hosted by the oakland police commission to let the public way in about opd's next leader. >> we want input into what kind of chief the community wants to see at what priorities they want the chief to undertake. cornell: priorities like reducing crime. the opd's is -- it says since january violenim is up 15% compared to the same time last year. >> you have to have an understanding of what crime is, how it works, where it comes from, how you deal with it. cornell: others what the next chief to reflect the values of oakland. >> whoever the next chief is male or female they need to be able to have a passion for people. cornell: oakland has been without a chief since february

when mayor chantelle fired leronne armstrong afternoon independent investigation found he failed to hold some of his officers accountable for misconduct. some of the businesses that have been the target of recent break-ins like this dispensary on west brand are standing up against crime sounding off about the next police chief. >> it is just standing with the community letting them know we are still here. cornell: thieves drove into bloom dispensary last sunday and still product. the store holding a solidarity event with colonial doughnuts, that was also hit. she says the next chief should win -- lead weather got ability. >> responded more probably. i don't know if please ever showed -- bullies ever showed up the day we were broken into. anser: after the public forum they will select four candidates and is the list will be sent to the mayor to make the final decision. in open cornell barnard abc7news. stephanie: first responders are partnering with san mateo county residents to make sure they are ready in case of emergency.

it was for disaster preparedness day at the san mateo county event center. the goal was to teach residents about things like performing cpr, wildfire preparedness, and how to deal with the unthinkable if it were to happen. first responders say they want to make sure all citizens know how to help. >> whether you dealing with people or looking to save a life or you are just helping out with traffic you just being present and it just being in there and that is where it counts. stephanie: families had the opportunity to tour firetrucks and other emergency response vehicles. not weather. a peek outside with three set. how lisa: is it looking? lisa:beautiful. 62 here, 67 at the airport, through the low to mid 70's today downtown. already 73 in livermore. we are talking a quick warm-up today. air quality moderate and triple digits in length. state tuned. i will -- stay tuned. i'll have the full details. stephanie: ahead, a robo taxi

we see them everywhere cruise cars and waymo cars driving around san francisco with his some question whether the atoll omits vehicles or drive -- interfering with public safety. the public safety commission is holding a meeting tomorrow to discuss robo taxi's getting in the way a first responders read the san francisco taxi workers alliance will protest at the meeting hoping from stopping the commission from lifting current restrictions on economists vehicles. the alliance says the cars for breakdowns creating a street blockages that interfere with

police and firefighters. the rally will begin at 11:30 am outside the offices along mcallister street. it's back-to-school time. that means it's back to the backpacks. thanks to the samaritan house nearly 3000 bay area students now have a new backpack school supplies from the annual backpack giveaway in san mateo. organizers safety event is crucial as some families are still recovering from the financial impact of the pandemic. >> post-pandemic everybody is thinking the world is shifting back to normal. there is a new normal. as you know our economy has shifted so much that the dollar does not stretch as much as it did before. for our clients, again, we are earning minimum wage, maybe a little more to live in this very expensive community. us being able to support them and underwrite their expenses is critical. been providing support to people in need for more than 45 years.

speaking of back-to-school oakland students will be back in a class starting tomorrow. all last week students and teachers were gearing up. the abc7news senior education reporter leanne melendez says after the pandemic to teachers strikes, they are hoping the year go smoothly. >> welcome back to oakland high school. there you go, ladies. leanne: if only there was a way to slow down summer. >> i am still on summertime but i'm excited to go back and see my friends and graduate. >> we are excited for the school year to start. leanne: welcome to registration we get oakland high school. >> kids will come in and they will check that their online registration happened. they will get their id pictures today and their schedules today. stephanie: more than 600 students are expected to show up with their parents to confirm their enrollment. asia smith told us she hopes her senior year sees no interruptions like previous years. >> hopefully nothing to do with like covid or striking more anything. leanne: the teachers strike

started in early may and kept students away from the classroom for nearly two weeks. >> when you interrupt instruction, when you interrupt the pace of the schedule, both in the instruction and also the interactions, kids struggle and teachers struggle. leanne: the principle here, pamela moy, says the school plans on maximizing instructional time to make up for the lost days. >> it's about just getting into the classroom starting work, really getting people back into the grind, if you will. the cycle of learning and growing. leanne: at prescott elementary teachers like ms. williams began setting up their classrooms while volunteers decorated the hallway bulletin boards. >> we bring a community in and they really helped to transform spaces. so, the first day of school is the best day of school. leanne: the oakland education fund has about 30 organizations a volunteer throughout the year. today the accounting firm kpmg

international had its national service day and picked prescott to show their commitment to the community. >> the people who care about oakland students, and want them to have the best experiences they can throughout the year. leanne: in oakland leanne melendez abc7news. >> as you are packing up your backpacks tonight let's check on it was decent to see how the back-to-school forecast is shaping up tomorrow. lisa: thank goodness we will be cooler. it will not be like today. today we are climbing anywhere from 2-5 degrees warmer than yesterday. tomorrow, the first day of school for the kids in oakland, temperatures are coming down. overnight tonight we will look at a return to the low clouds, the fog of breezy wind, and temperatures that are pretty chilly. 7:00 58 degrees. you will need a jacket. by the afternoon just in the 70's compared to a much warmer sunday. even the breezy wind will return. that is good timing for sure.

as we look at live doppler 7 now the fog is not far away, but its influence is only being felt at the immediate coast later today as the wind backs off. high-pressure is at its strongest today. as we look up and down the state here notice it's everywhere. it is very hot in southern california. they will not be feeling the effects of the fog at all for quite some time. to the tropics we have a minimal hurricane that will be weakening bringing up some moisture into southern california. you can see it making a turn tuesday night. if this area of low pressure will spread moisture and clouds and we may even get humidity from it as we get to the wednesday/thursday timeframe. that is the second half of the work week. right now you can see how blue it is from emeryville, low 60's in san francisco, 66 in oakland, for 60 san jose. 55 was hazy son half moon bay. these trails as moderate air-quality today with high-pressure at its strongest.

wind is pulling down high-level smoke. from oregon we will be hazy or than yesterday. 64 santa rosa, 68 in napa. 70's from fairfield, concord and livermore. nice and mild. from mount tam pretty hasty. patchy coastal fog is retreating. mild to weather at the coast. it will be a beautiful day from the city along the peninsula. getting kind of testy down the peninsula over into the east bay. the heat eases for most of us tomorrow but it will really take the entirety of the day for the sea breeze to allow for the cooling to get into our east bay valleys on tuesday. here is a look at the upper level smoke. only in the blue. still above 20,000 feet. you will notice haziness takes us into monday. not until tuesday when we will see a reversal of the wind. better quality. fire danger index, of renovation very dry out there and feel gets drier throughout the day with

moving forward, finding solutions. stephanie: starting this half-hour with a look at the weather in the hot forecast today. triple digits. lisa: it was hot yesterday and today we are already in the 70's in our inland valleys. here is a look from fulmer peak and air quality is good. upper elevations were warmer and will warm quicker. moderate air-quality through the day today. a better sea breeze tomorrow will bring us better air quality. then the rest of the week. closer to the bay at emeryville all in the 60's, near 70's on the peninsula on the south bay. half moon bay brighter despite 55 degrees. we look at the temperatures here in the 70's. perhaps they did degrees within the 10:00 hour. though 70 santa rosa and the warm up already occurring. temperatures have really climbed in the last hour. north wind responsible for that is high-pressure builds.

haziness from mount tam. through the next couple hours we will hit 90 degrees by probably noon in our inland valleys, staying in the 60's at the coast, 70's temporarily as we warmed through the 1:00, 2:00 hour. then you will notice triple digit heat late in the afternoon inland. developing news former president donald trump back on the campaign trail following his arraignment on election fraud charges. abc news reporter allison kasich tells us what donald trump is saying about the indictments and the new poll on what americans think about them. >> former president trump campaigning this weekend after pleading not guilty to charges he had eagerly attempted to overturn the 2020 election while headlining a fundraising gala in south carolina donald trump criticized special counsel jack smith. >> deranged jack smith. he is it arranged human being. take a look at that face. you say, that guy is a sick man. there is something wrong with him. allison tolan smith requesting a

protective order citing the truth social post in the former president stating if you go after me i am coming after you. prosecutors are concerned donald trump could disclose evidence writing "if the defendant were to begin issuing public posts using details of four example grand jury could have a harmful effect on witnesses or adversely affect the fair administration of justice in the case." the trump campaign responded in a statement friday calling the social media post the definition of political speech. the judge issued a 5:00 p.m. monday deadline for a response to which donald trump's legal team replied with a request for a three day delay. that request was denied. a new poll finds 65% of americans think the new charges are serious. though, 46% think the charges are politically motivated. >> he is innocent until he is

portion of i-80. yo can see that along with the recommended detours to get around the closure.you can see n green. the lanes are expected to reopen tomorrow at 5:00 a.m.. 78th peace memorial ceremony this morning to mark the day that the atomic bomb was dropped on the city august 6, 1945. at the event city leaders criticized nuclear weapons. here in the bay area a group of protesters gather in the east bay every year to honor the lives lost during the bombing. tri-valley cares is a nuclear watchdog group pushing for change at the local level. the group's name stands for communities against a radioactive environment. >> we are using this us a way to bring attention to the work that happens at livermore lab to the public. a lot of people do not realize that livermore, to this day,

still, 90% of the budget is devoted to nuclear weapons development. stephanie: protesters friday honored the late daniel ellsworth, a longtime activist that leaked the pentagon papers in 1971. on the peninsula now a nonprofit called in defense of animals is giving the happy hawk award to fast -- foster city officials for their choice to use nonlethal methods to manage vicki's population. officials decided to "coexist" with a nearly 100 canadian geese in the area. if the decision comes after previous plans to kill the geese over health risks received backlash. now to the florida governor ron desantis and governor gavin newsom. desantis and his counterproposal to set the ground rules for the showdown yesterday. he wants a live studio audience for the debate, something gavin newsom steam does not. he wanted held in iowa or georgia. gavin newsom's team proposed to

georgia, nevada, or north carolina. it proposed -- appears both governors would prefer a debate to happen sometime in the fall. marches continue for o shea sibley the professional dancers to been killed in what authorities believe was a hate crime. the 17-year-old suspect accused was charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. authorities say sibley was invoking at a gas station in brooklyn with them -- when a group of men shouted gay slurs at his group and sibley was stabbed not long afterward. he will be laid to rest in philadelphia tuesday. robo calls. we all get them. are they the worst? this morning we are learning the federal communications commission tracked down those behind making more than 5 million of them. it's an international network of companies working and auto warranty scam. the ftc said the companies made the calls to nearly 500 million phone numbers.

the commission issued a record-breaking $300 million fine. the companies are accused of breaking multiple laws by using fake caller ids and making pre-recorded voice calls to cell phones prior consent. coming up, messages of hatred turned to love. an incredible story about how local kids of responding after anti-semitic messages were left on their doorsteps. and, we take you outside here for a beautiful shot of our sutro camera from the golden gate bridge. you can see no fog in sight but you could see haziness later today. we are seeing hot temperatures. the time now

i had to double take this video several times because those are not just humans in the ocean there. there are pups taking to the tides in pacifica. thankfully the road -- waves were not too rough for the world dog surfing championships. so fun for it i took my dog above a one year. the competition has been around since 2006 and it is so fun to see. some of the dogs are so calm and collected riding the waves. lisa and i were commenting on rosie yesterday, on her force of nature as she took that wave. lots of fun here in pacifica. they have frisbee and costume contest to sand -- contests and competitions that have inspired similar competitions across the world. a lot of fun. san francisco's mclaren park sounded like the 1960's this weekend. year's jerry day to pay respect

for san francisco's native son and music icon jerry garcia. the event brought together a lot of music so -- music lovers and of course deadheads to enjoy some of jerry's classic hits. it was followed by a least 11 different neighborhood after parties. in the north bay one neighborhood is pushing back against hateful flyers left on people's doorsteps last week. but some kids are turning to hate speech around by creating their own messages of love and acceptance. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard tells us how they are building a better bay area. cornell: all began with a blank piece of paper. an idea sparked by an editing neighborhood incident. >> it made me feel super sad. why would somebody do that? cornell: recently flyers were left on doorsteps in puerto madero and clarksburg containing anti-semitic language. the shirley family security

camera caught one of the flyers landing in their driveway last saturday i tossed from a passing car. >> i felt really bad. why would somebody do that? that is mean and sad. cornell: ebony reed and her sister and friend were so upset they decided to push back with multicolored markers. >> we decided we would make like flyers that were kind of like the opposite of what they were saying. we wanted to make a difference. cornell: here is what the girls created. poster after poster with positive words and images. the next step is the girls took to the streets canvassing the same neighborhoods where the flyers were left. they even reached out to neighbors. >> here are some fires for you. cornell: the same neighbors that received the racialist -- racist flyers. >the girls dads are pretty and plast -- pretty impressed by what they did. >> i was pretty darn proud, yes.
