temperatures not quite as warm as most cities today. the warm spell is almost over, we turn cooler tomorrow. let us check in on traffic. jobina: we are starting off with mass transit, everything is on time. no blocking issues on the roadways so far this morning, this is an easy monday commute. you know you want to ease on into the day after the weekend, so a good time to do it. headlights traveling toward the maze and if you are traveling further west going toward the bay bridge toll plaza, i have this life picture. metering lights came on at 5:35, this is the biggest back up this morning and it is not that bad. you should be right on time this morning. reggie: about ready to say goodbye to your kid for the first day of kindergarten. whatever it is, families and the oakland unified school district hope the school year starts

without interruption, especially since last school year ended with teachers on strike. amanda del castillo is live in oakland this morning, it is always such an exciting day. amanda: hard to believe that we are already back in oakland, talking about the first day of school for all of these students. while i am sure many of them wish there was a way to slow down summer, there are certainly plenty of excitement across the east bay. we are talking about 34,000 students coming back to schools across town. to break what some call the summer slide and give kids a bit of extra time to get back into learning mode, the district will operate on minimum days the first week across elementary schools. everyone hopeful for a seamless start coming after an admittedly rough left school year -- last school year. the strike started in may and kept students away from the classroom for nearly two weeks. >> it was rough across the

district, we had incidents we did not want to see, a lot of pandemic issues were going on. we are looking forward to a great start this year. we are all in this together, looking forward to a great year. we are happy with the teachers that have come into the district , last week we had the new teacher institute were retrained 160 or so new teachers. it is an exciting time. amanda: better shape than many, oakland is still seeing several dozen teachers openings. if you check your calendar, it is august 7. early in the month, so i asked why they are starting so early. it seems like the first in the bay area, i am told because so many of their high school level students are also taking classes on the college level. the district work to align its

schedule so once a highschooler finishes school, they also finish a semester on the college level as well. that is the reason they are starting so early and have been the last few years. kumasi: san francisco taxi drivers will be protesting the possible expansion of self driving cars in the city. they will rally outside the california public utilities commission headquarters. this is the agency prepares to vote thursday on lifting restrictions for driverless cars. without restrictions, the cars could work 24/7 as driverless right healing services. in a statement, a board member of the san francisco taxi workers alliance said taxi drivers are the canaries in the coal mine in the coming ai onslaught. our jobs may go first, but yours may be next. they have expressed concerns about safety, which are refuted. reggie: hundreds of marchers

will converge on the san francisco federal building for a rally demanding immigration reform. undocumented residents and allies took part in marches logging a combined 90 miles over three days. one walk went from petaluma to san francisco, the other from san jose and up the peninsula. the groups are calling for congress to pass hr 15 would allow roughly 8 million undocumented people living in the u.s. to apply for legal residency. >> people should have a safety net when there is a pandemic or wildfires. that is why we are walking for three days, so democrats and republicans will see the urgency of passing the registry bill. reggie: action this summer. kumasi: millions of people are on alert as storms threatened to bring damaging winds, tornadoes and large hail.

the weather has already caused issues at the beyoncé concert. jobina: i was there the night before it happened, so so thankful i was not part of it but it was awful for many people. scary moments in maryland j outside of washington, d.c. where the commanders play. a shelter-in-place order was issued because of lightning forcing tens of thousands of people to pack inside the covered portions of the stadium. the danger was not only outside, but inside in some of the tight spaces where there was intense crowding with temperatures in the 80's. people reportedly passed out, several people needed treatment for heat exhaustion and one person was taken to the hospital. >> people started passing out, we looked at each other like it is not safe, i do not feel good about being here. jobina: the concert went on after a two hour delay, i had friends in the crowd and said she still did her thing in the rain and the tour reportedly

paid $100,000 to keep local trains running late to take people home. i was at the airport when the storm hit, they canceled all flights to atlanta and grounded everything for a while. we were sitting on the runway for at least 20 minutes or so and now dangerous weather is expected today, along with nearly the entire east with thunderstorms from the deep south to new york. not a great situation. kumasi: still to come, the aftermath of a dangerous sideshow in the east bay, the crash that left multiple people hurt. reggie: men were forced to jump from there but when it caught fire in the water. drew: we are tracking the severe weather potential across the east coast and parts of the region in the mid atlantic, level four out of five today not only for hail and lightning, but the potential for tornadoes. if you are flying east, there will likely be delays due to the weather. back at home, starting out fog

kumasi: welcome back. two men had to jump from their boat after it caught fire in the water. >> it is too late, get off the boat. >> get off the boat. >> jump out right now. kumasi: right now. look at the flames, the video is from a couple who was boating nearby. the couple helped to get those people from the water after they jumped. a fire boat started to put out the flames, still no idea what caused it. drew: an update on the tropics, we are watching a hurricane. here is hawaii for reference. it will stay south of hawaii, so no direct impacts from this hurricane.

kumasi: three people have died after two fighting helicopters crashed midair in riverside county last night. it happened as crews were fighting a fire. one helicopter crashed into a hillside, killing the pilot and two crew members. the second made a hard landing. there were no serious injuries. the ntsb and the faa are investigating. at least one person is recovering after a possible explosion at a sherwin-williams facility in texas. it happened in garland, about 30 minutes outside dallas. officials say the victim is an

employee at the paint manufacturing plant. the extent of injuries is not known. it caused a fire that forced the police to shut down multiple streets. the cause is under investigation. high temperatures last night impacted firefighters as they worked to put out a house fire in brentwood. the in triple digit degree weather. firefighters were able to put it out by wetting the area and making sure no heat could reignite it. they do not rule out heat as a cause of the fire. we have seen warnings as a of dangerous sideshows, but this one is very unusual. there is a car that had to be fished out of the water at the antioch marina early yesterday morning. the police say it is a result of a sideshow at the marina saturday night. the car was submerged and had to be towed out of the water. another driver crashed in the

parking lot and sheared open this fire hydrant. a third driver crashed near 10th and g street. three people were injured and had to go to the hospital. reggie: we are hearing from the mother of euphoria star angus cloud, she said his death may have been accident overdose. he died last monday and his family's oakland home. his mother said her son did not intend to end his life, although he was in grief over his father's passing, his last day was a joyful one. the open fire departments is the cause of death has not been determined. his mother share he spent his last day reorganizing his room, doing our projects and spoke to his intent to provide financially for his family. kumasi: if you have been waiting for madonna to reschedule her tour dates, the wait is almost over. she said the rescheduled dates will be available in the coming days. the san francisco show was originally set for october 4 and

tonight, the fog returns, the marine layer is back tuesday morning. that will bring about coastal drizzle and temperatures in the 50's. future trak temperatures show tomorrow, we get rid of the warm weather and go back to average, if not below average for this time of year by tomorrow afternoon. then it is a steady pattern, temperatures ebb and flow a few degrees but today day we have over the next seven. the next seven days, you will find it is warm and sunny today, then we are cooler tomorrow with temperatures back to average in most spots. morning fog and sun. temperatures a few degrees above average with warmest spots back in the low 90's. jobina: traffic, whether it is on the road, mass transit, all of it super this morning. mass transit, everything is on time.

they escaped on a plane to paris on friday. the police in san diego are looking for a man they say still unelected from a home, but it is what he did before he left that is getting a lot of attention. the video shows the thief going into a garage and taking a $1300 bike. there is what appears to be a golden retriever who was following him, so he took the time to pet and play with the dog. the suspect can be heard saying you are the coolest dog i have ever known. because it didn't bite you. after about a minute, the thief left with a bike. do you hear this dog? that is not the coolest dog, that is a dog that is upset his man -- this man is taking his owners bike. next at 6:30, changes today f people giving blood. the new rules in effect for those in the lgbtq community.

i have been checking over and over again, am i missing anything? i am not, it is just really light in terms of traffic. beginning to fill in on the westbound side, traveling eastbound, no slowdown whatsoever. the toll plaza is the busiest spot, metering lights came on at 5:35 area it will take you 12 minutes to get across the bridge and into san francisco. we will end with drive times, tracy to dublin, a couple of crashes reported in tracy which is only impacting super commuters. the drivetime has remained generally the same. antioch to concord slightly slowing. reggie: today, refined of the result of a vote by san jose city workers whether to authorize a strike. lena howland is

vote and demand from workers. lena: this morning is when the two unions that account for 45 hundred city workers in san jose are expected to announce whether or not they plan to go on strike. members say a strike could affect city services like closing libraries, canceled kids summer camps and delays at the airport. workers are asking for what they say is a livable wage. the city is offering a 5% raise next year, followed by a 4% raise and a 3% raise in the following years, but this library clerk says it is simply not enough to survive in san jose. >> i will be losing money, but it is for the greater good, because we san jose city employees deserve to have the same amount of raises as our sister cities. >> i do not want the city to be in a position where we overextend ourselves than have to do layoffs and cut services later. it is not fair to workers or residents. lena: to avoid what he considers a terrible situation and says only

one mediation session between the two groups has not been enough to reach an agreement. the unions are expected to make an announcement about a possible strike at: 30 this morning, just outside san jose city hall. this is when we will relearn -- when we will learn the results of the strike vote. kumasi: in the east bay, thousands of customers do not have power right now. this is a live look at the outage map, two of the largest outages you can senior walnut creek, just west of mount diablo state park. this started around 12:30 this morning, power is expected to be restored by 10:00. there is also an outage in lafayette, that might not be restored until later this afternoon. you details any disease in the east bay, two deaths have been linked to a spot in richmond. both people were diagnosed with symptoms similar to an ammonia,

a third person was diagnosed but survived. public health officials say they most likely caught the disease at a day spa located in richmond. the bacteria is found in water, lakes and streams but concerns arrive when the bacteria grows and spreads in human made water systems like hot tubs or swimming pools. >> with water vapor rising, there is a waterfall that comes out of the hot tub. there is a lot of steam in the room. that is why the risk was so great. kumasi: doctors say it is treatable if it is caught early on. the incubation period last two weeks. they are urging anyone who visited to get tested. the less known cases in the area were diagnosed last august in san jose, a couple from long beach contracted the sickness after staying at a hotel. they were both treated at a hospital and survived. santa clara county public health officials traced bacteria to the

hotel hot to. reggie: if you live in oakland, get ready. you will see more kids as you head out the door this morning, it is the first day of school for oakland unified. amanda del castillo's live in oakland this morning with what everyone can expect. amanda: ready or not, here they come. we are talking about 34,000 students heading back to campuses across the district to celebrate this first day of school. district officials are calling this one of the more exciting times of the year, something they have been preparing for since back in the spring. they say the goal is always trying to improve and get schools in better shape to welcome back students. everyone hopeful for a seamless start after an admittedly rough last school year. the oakland teachers strike started in early may and cap students away from the classroom for nearly two weeks. the communications director telling me the district still

has several dozen teacher openings but says the district is in better shape than many others. >> we are looking for good people who want to help kids and make a difference in the community, who want to build out the future. that is what we are doing here with bright kids doing good work and getting ready to lead us into that future. amanda: some promising recently they had a new teacher institute where they trained about 160 new teachers. those teachers withdrawing the superintendent and other district leaders throughout the week, assisting and welcoming students back. also wanting to take the time to remind people those drivers who are going to get into the roads that there are going to be 34,000 kids heading back to campuses, 77 campuses across the city. be mindful when you get behind the wheel this morning.

samaritan house has been providing support to people in need for more than 45 years. reggie: as drug overdose deaths continue to climb, santa clara county is making a major push to get narcan into the hands of his many people as possible. dozens of boxes of the drug were being handed out over the weekend. people packed into the library to learn how to use it to save a life. you can never hurt someone with narcan, you can only help. the county has launched an opioid prevention campaign across the library system. >> by bringing information like this to the library district, we empower residents to act until ems and other officials can get to us. >> we have made an effort to get it out into schools and libraries, a trusted venue were so many staff have stepped up and said i will take the training. reggie: the goal is to educate residents on spotting for prescription pills and overdose.

reggie: defense officials confirmed for u.s. navy destroyers were dispatched off the coast of alaska after nearly a dozen chinese and russian

temperatures we had over the weekend, 80's and 90's in the south bay today with sunny skies continuing among the peninsula. 81 in mountain view, the coast will see a lot of sunshine with temperatures in the mid 60's. downtown today near 70 with a breeze picking up this afternoon. in the north bay, warm to hot, 80's to 90's for the most part. 90 in sonoma. east bay, bright sunshine and warm conditions, 78 in oakland. 84 in hercules, berkeley up to 77. and lend it is hot, not as hot as over the weekend but above average in the mid 90's. tonight, fog reemerges and will spread across the region, that will bring us coastal drizzle. numbers fall back to the 50's overnight tonight and that will set the stage for a sharply cooler afternoon tomorrow.
