complex on friday at the vista apartment complex at parkmoor avenue and menker avenue. officers had no information to release about a specific suspect or motive at this time. >> anytime our community in the city of san jose, we are a small city when it comes to one another, have to experience this kind of loss, it can be traumatic. dan: those deaths are san jose's 23rd and 24th homicides this year. ama: covid-19 cases are rising across the nation again. rates of hospital admissions -- admissions are going up. despite the increase hospitalizations remain at record lows, but doctors warned the uptick should make people cautious. deaths have not increased. all current circulating subvariants are related to x bv, as opposed to omicron.

a new variant now makes up an estimated 17% of new cases. dan: san francisco's federal building was the last stop for two immigration marchers today. they walked over 90 miles ove three days bid earlier today, we saw some of the marchers come into san francisco after making their way from petaluma across the golden gate bridge. the other band of marchers came up the peninsula from san jose. they are calling on congress to pass the registry bill, which would allow 8 million undocumented people in the u.s. to apply for legal residency. ama: more than 4000 city workers of san jose have voted to strike next week. the strike will kick off next tuesday if no deal is reached before then. the unions include the airport workers, housing union, and library workers. the city is offering a 5% raise next year, then 4% and 3% the

years after. >> every dollar matters, but we also have to be honest about the math. whatever we add up this point, the 5% raise requires a cut. ama: the mayor says those cuts could mean layoffs and cutting of services such as library hours and firefighter staffing. >> our workers are moving to other cities that offer better wages and working conditions. ama: the city of san jose already has nearly 800 job vacancies. the san jose city council will meet in closed session to discuss the wage issues tomorrow. more than 11,000 city workers in a los angeles are planning to walk off the job starting at midnight tonight. it will be for a 24 hours single day of action. it would affect the ports and airports in the l.a. area. los angeles is the largest container point in north america. dan: it is the earthshaking

change in the college sports world, a mass migration of collegiate sports programs breaking tradition and playing in other conferences. with the breakup of the pac-12, there are rumors that cal and stanford could join the atlantic coast conference and have to travel across the country to play games. we have to break all of this down for you. it is just amazing. have the perfect person for the job, part of tonight has bus abc 7 deep dive at 11:00. sports director larry beil explains what is next good larry: the big tane -- ten has unveiled the new map of the mega conference, starting with the teams they swiped from the pac-12. let's show you what this look like with the west coast teams, and if you extend it to colorado and utah,, you have that. the big ten as previously existed with these teams, it makes sense for them right here.

>> we are talking a football decision based on football, but what about softball and football who have to -- baseball who have to travel across the country? do we know the number one cause of mental illness is? it is lack of rest and sleep. larry: what should the pac-12 leaders, whoever is next, do next? get some calculators out, because here is how you make your case to get into the big 10 and join your former buddies. you total up all of the travel costs. this has to add up to tens of millions of dollars per year. so cal and stanford could use that as financial incentive to push their way into the big ten, convince themselves that they should want two of the great academic institutions in the country. in louisville that, congress. what congress should be doing is calling in the tv executives, the conference commissioners,

shows, chinatown has a bit of its vibrancy back. ♪ tim: dangling above the of san francisco's chinatown is a site both old and new. >> they are iconic. it is part of us. it is part of chinatown. tim: for the past 10 years, these lanterns have welcomed locals and visitors along grand avenue until earlier this year when the heavy rains and atmospheric rivers of the winter destroyed them. >> they were tattered or torn. it was horrible. and you would see missing lanterns because they got blown off. tim: after months of fundraising, 180 new lanterns have gone up, a welcome sight for tourists -- >> when we take a picture of this area, we take a picture of this. tim: and local store owners who say the extra foot traffic the lanterns bring means extra business. >> there are lots of people walking the streets, taking pictures with their families. tim: the lanterns are also a way

dan: new developments on the alabama river brawl. the altercation happened on saturday at riverfront park in montgomery, alabama. video shows the dock worker trying to move about that was parked where a river boat carrying hundreds of passengers was trying to pull in. that is when another man approach to the worker and another shirtless man ran in to attack him. the whole thing turned into a wild brawl. >> probably 60 people fighting. a massive amount of people fighting. i do not even know who was fighting who at that point. like i said come on both sides, the guys from the boat and the people from my ship. dan: the city's mayor responded to the viral footage, in response to a dockworker saying

justice will be served. ama: more than 50 million americans are under severe weather alerts across the south and eastern united states. the main threats are tornadoes and instructive wins. more than one million people are without power. federal employees were sent home early when lightning struck near the nation's capital. the system moved across the country from the midwest. >> you could see the house and the sheds destroyed. we are just lucky we were not home. ama: more than 15,000 flights have been delayed across the country since sunday. forecasters expect the storms will still be damaging after midnight and dwindle through tomorrow morning. the extreme weather is being fueled by heat across the country. dan: part of our work in building a better bay area focuses on success through education. ama: and today was the first day of schools in oakland. east oakland schools got a new

community garden and a play structure, and this was the first true opening day with no imposed covid restrictions. >> even last year when we opened, do we let parents back on campus? we had to invite them in and let them leave right away. this time, we let them mingle in the campus theater the way we used to do it. ama: the school year did start early for the 34,000 students across the schools. the district aligned with the college schedule to accommodate the high school students who do dual enrollment at the local community college. dan: esan has a martial arts instructor has gone viral on tiktok after sharing a major health scare. several sinus infections led to a surgery where doctors had to remove half of her skull. reporter lauren martinez says how she is expiring -- inspiring others to fight on. >> when i get to the studio, i forget about pain and about the past. lauren: san jose motional arts

instructor marcia santana says it is about the spiritual side. 26-year-olds as it is what helps her recover after undergoing three brain surgeries. >> this is a story of how i lost half of my school. lauren: santana shared this tiktok video now viewed one point 6 million times. she explains how antibiotics to help fight sinus infections in 2021 did not work. >> they were getting caught up here and underneath my eyebrows, on top of my eyebrows, and spreading up into a huge mass that was about 12, 14 centimeters appear. lauren: in december 2020 one, santana had a craniotomy. doctors removed 14 centimeters of her skull due to swelling. with her active lifestyle halted, santana wanted to use the free time to spare -- spread awareness about the importance of health. >> just because you are young
