now turning deadly. flooding rain, large hail and winds up to 70mph left widespread damage power outages and extensive travel delays. >> the storms slamming the east spawned this funnel cloud twisting through the central new york town of dryden. and in maryland, heavy winds toppled these 30 power poles in westminster, trapping dozens of people in their cars. >> a total of 33 adults were trapped in a vehicle, along with 14 children. the good news is they're safe. >> everyone in the 34 cars rescued after the hours long ordeal. the storms are blamed for more than 1 million power outages after tornado watches and warnings intense dates. oh, my. in anderson, south carolina, a 15 year old was killed by a falling tree at his grandparents house. and in florence, alabama , police say a man working outside was struck and killed by lightning in neighboring tennessee. extensive damage at

this apartment building in knoxville with smashed windows and fallen trees on top of crushed vehicles. hail the size of golf balls was reported in huntington, west virginia, and near philadelphia. it's just like, bam, the back of this man's home left badly damage and trees like this, you know, falling on the roof, destroyed my deck, destroyed my hot tub. as the storm approached, federal workers in dc were sent home early and at the airports. more than 1500 flights were canceled or delayed. these lines in atlanta. elsewhere, more record heat is possible today across texas and the gulf coast. president biden on a visit to arizona today is facing new pressure to protect americans from the extreme temperatures. a local congressman is pushing biden to change the rules at fema and add extreme heat to the list of disasters that can qualify for federal aid. as for the air travel delays, at one point, there were nine airports at ground stops. >> as the other big story this

morning, more workers going on strike. this time, employees of the second largest city in the country demanding higher wages as all americans face the challenges of inflation. an. here's abc's alison kosik this morning. >> for the first time in decades as city workers in los angeles plan to walk off the job demanding better pay and benefits. more than 11,000 people from sanitation workers to traffic officers are protesting contract negotiations between the union and city leaders. >> we're all throughout the entire city, whether it's animal services, sanitation, the parks. i mean, you name it. we've got some great folks and allies on city council. unfortunately we have some out of touch. city administrators also in la. >> thousands of hotel workers striking this summer for better wages. but it's not just l.a. in san jose, california, librarians, firefighters and airport workers fighting for what they call a livable wage

plan to strike for three days next week in new york city. unions staged a day of action against starbucks yesterday, accusing the coffee giant of anti-union tactics. >> so we're out here using the visibility that we have to try to help starbucks customers and the people that like the company know that the company is preventing these people from fighting for a better wage and better working conditions. but the biggest strike in this summer of strikes is affecting the entertainers industry. >> little progress is reported in the actors and writers strikes, and now more fallout, even jeopardy is in jeopardy. the show says, without its writing staff this fall, it will be reusing old clues and former contestants. the show must go on the summer of strikes could continue into the fall, with the united auto workers union currently in talks with the big three us automakers. andrea derek allison, thank you. >> a vigil was held in chicago for another young victim of

street violence. nine year old serabi medina was shot and killed outside her home. a 43 year old neighbor is charged with her murder. reports say he had often complained about kids making too much noise outside. the girl's mother was also killed in a shooting five years ago. >> former vice president mike pence has qualified for the first republican presidential debate august 23rd. his campaign announced that pence has now attracted the required number of donors he's the eighth candidate to qualify. former president trump has suggested he may skip the debate. meanwhile several new developments overnight in the battle between trump's lawyers and prosecutors in the election interference case. at issue is what parts of the case trump will be allowed to discuss publicly. abc's justin finch is here with the latest. justin, good morning. >> andrea good morning. the two sides at odds. former president trump's attorneys are accusing special counsel jack smith of aiming to stifle trump's freedom of speech, while smith argues

trump's team is seeking to try his case in the media. a new deadline this morning for federal prosecutors in former president donald trump's defense team. d.c. federal judge tanya chutkan is giving both sides until 3 p.m. eastern today to propose dates and times for a pretrial hearing regarding special counsel jack smith's protective order filing. that court order following judge chutkan monday deadline for trump's attorneys response to smith's request calling for a court imposed limits to what trump can share about the 2020 election interference case. trump's lawyers firing back, saying he should not be subject to a blanket gag order seeking to narrow the scope of sensitive materials. smith, responding, saying the order was reasonable and charging that trump's team is proposing an order that is designed to allow trump to try his case in the media rather than in the courtroom. in the initial request, smith arguing that if, for example, trump were

to share grand jury information , it could have a harmful, chilling effect on witnesses or adversely affect the fair administration of justice. smith also citing trump's recent all caps social media post, saying, if you go after me, i'm coming after you. trump's campaign defending that post as politico speech. trump who pleaded not guilty to charges in smith's election interference probe last week, accusing the biden administration of weaponizing the justice department against him. >> they want to interfere for in my campaign. they want to interfere in the elections. >> the white house refusing to comment on trump's indictment and recent allegations. and after receiving scheduling proposals from trump's lawyers and prosecutors, the judge is planning to hold that protective motion hearing by this friday. trump will not have to attend. and andrea. >> justin, thank you. >> russian forces have unleashed

back to back attacks on civilians in eastern ukraine, killing at least seven people. the missiles struck an apartment building, a hotel and a restaurant. and after emergency crews rushed to the scene, the same spot was targeted once again on back in this country, we turn to alabama and a violent brawl caught on camera with charges. >> now expected to be announced this morning. arrest warrants have been issued for at least four people after this brawl in montgomery, alabama. witnesses say it started when this crew member in the white uniform tried to move a pontoon boat being used by a group of white men. the boat was blocking a large river boat from docking. those guys who parked there were told not to leave it there and they left it there. a man confronts the dock worker and then get several people join outnumbering the crew member. this woman kicking the man while he was down. >> you just felt so helpless for that man. like there's 5 or 6 of

them on him. that's when witnesses most, if not all of them black, rushed to the man's aid, one even swimming to the dock to join in the fight, turning into a full on melee. >> the violence escalates. one man was detained after using a chair as a weapon. police confirm these videos are part of their investigation. according to montgomery's mayor, officers detained several reckless individuals for attacking the man who was doing his job. >> they're going to have to determine who, in fact, really was, if any, were engaged in acts of legitimate self-defense and legally justified self-defense versus individuals who may be charged with being aggressors, who were initiating . >> the mayor is holding a news conference today. and when asked if the brawl was racially motivated, he said he could not confirm nor deny it. >> time now for a look at your tuesday weather.

>> good morning, america. back now with a shark attack on the east coast. >> a woman is in critical condition after officials say a shark bit her about 50ft off rockaway beach in queens, new york, expanded surveillance is expected today. five people suffered shark bites last month, about 35 miles east of that location. new concerns about airport security after two reported breaches involving the identity checking service clear . >> in both cases, clear employees escorted passengers through tsa checkpoints, even though the passengers did not show their ids. and they were not enrolled in the clear service or the website. politico reports. one passenger used a boarding pass found in the trash and another used someone else's id. clear says the cases involved an ambassador and the employees responsible have been fired. >> southwest airlines is facing a lawsuit accused of racial profiling. the lawsuit is being

brought by a white woman and worry over how she and her biracial daughter were treated. this morning, a mother in california has filed a federal lawsuit against southwest airlines after she says an employee reported her suspicion that the white mom was trafficking her biracial daughter. >> she was confused by the whole thing. i mean, what is a ten year old supposed to think when you're being questioned and by police? mary mccarthy and her ten year old daughter flew from la to colorado in 2021 to attend a family member's funeral on their connecting flight. >> mccarthy says she asked multiple passengers to switch seats with her daughter so they could sit together. but a flight attendant apparently found something she did, and the interactions between the two suspicious when they landed in denver. video taken by mccarthy shows two officers and a southwest representative waiting for them on the jetway because of the way southwest has their seating. >> we were the we were the. it's okay, sweetheart. we were we were the last ones on because we
