san jose where two units representing 45 -- unions representing 4500 workers have organized a strike. they are seeking higher wages, better conditions and benefits such as pay parental leave, and for the city to step up its efforts to fill hundreds of open jobs. >> we've been saying they are temporarily understaffed for nearly a decade. when you spin your saying you are temporarily understaffed, at some point you realize you are lying to the residence. >> please listen to us, empathize with us, invest in us. help us help the community, or we will go on strike. kristen: if no deal is reached come the strike would start next tuesday and go on for three days. the units represent a variety of employees from city librarians to airport workers. today the city of antioch named a temporary replacement for the police chief who is retiring on friday.

new ikea flagship store. the market street location will open on wednesday, august 23. we are told the store will be tailored for c living and storage across 52,000 square feet of space on three floors. it comes amid a flurry of retailers leaving downtown san francisco. whole foods reportedly is preparing to open a new location in san francisco's inns of vista neighborhood. it will be the chains francisco store. in april, hopefully -- whole foods closed a flagship store in downtown san francisco about a year after it open. kristen: a new survey showcases which groups of people are voting in california and which ones are not. the poll found that 71% of regular voters in the state are white and are wealthier than most californians and older as well. the majority of those who vote infrequently or not at all our younger people.

>> building a better bay area, moving forward, finding solutions, this is abc 7 news. larry: oh comes crime wave seems to be accelerating in just the last week -- oakland's crime wave appears to be accelerating with what appears to be an organized effort to rob convenience and liquor stores across the city. leslie brinkley explains. >> this is surveillance video shared by the owner of this montclair liquor store. he said last week carloads of young men stormed into his store at 5:20 a.m. wearing black hoodies. he says six state outside, six came inside with garbage bags and methodically stole other cigarettes and high end tequila, conga, and champagne, ransacking the place.

not far away, this liquor store on redwood road had a similar invasion. seven people in the store ceiling -- stealing cash and cigarettes, and only the expensive alcohol. last week, a car rammed into the front window and door of this convenience store on 20 3rd avenue, again with six people and three vehicles involved. at 4:00 a.m. yesterday, a similar heist cotton surveillance video at a 7-eleven in downtown oakland, with more than a dozen suspects in hoodies arriving in multiple vehicles. >> there try to take the safe, but they didn't succeed. it took all the cigarettes and tobacco products. it's happening all the time, like once a week is regular. >> at this department store on mountain boulevard, an employee told me that a few weeks ago several men walked in and ask if they could -- they ask if they could help them, and they said we are just here to grab

4:00. a san jose company showed us all that we could work from home remotely, without going to the office, is now saying it wanted workers back in the office. zoom employs living within 50 miles of an office must work there at least two days a week. this comes as zoom city -- videoconferencing service help evolve remote work during the pandemic. the company plans to rollout the policy during august and september. they are saying productivity, working together, but it's only two days a week, and only for those who live within 50 miles of an office. what do you think? >> i have different thoughts on it, because i've never worked from home. i see the benefits, i see the fact that it does spark conversations in the office. of course that helps with creativity, and of course it boosts business for the companies that are around there, people getting lunch etc.. but i do think working from

describe it. >> the excitement of the kids, even the adults. >> you will catch people just kind of standing there, staring in awe. it's something that is indescribable. >> i've been doing this for years and years, and it still takes my breath away. >> early in the morning it is dark. we have a dawn patrol that turned see hot air balloons into gigantic lanterns, which is a surreal sight to see. >> it's like a light bulb turns on and the whole world comes to life. >> volunteer. we do a yearly hot air balloon festival. we've been going on for over 32 years. about 6:30 we will do a main launch.

they all launch from a field together. >> off we go. we will go out and paint the sky with a bunch of beautiful colors. definitely start out people state right. >> we have one that can no longer fly. we will set that up on the ground, just put some air into it and you can run around inside the balloon. great instagram opportunity and things like that. >> another big draw for the event is tethered rides. >> be able to see the surroundings and then come back down, come out and wander around the balloons and chat with the pilots, and it's amazing. we've got some inflatable obstacle courses. >> when any billing takes off, the roar of the crowd is just amazing. everybody is just filled by it.
