dangers of opioids and alcohol. ama: that is why we are dedicating more time tonight as the abc 7 deep dive. lauren martinez starts us off. lauren: a los gatos mom brought under targets for underage drinking. this becoming the headlines of news around the country. members of the community are pushing their message forward that providing alcohol to minors is unacceptable. the community of los gatos upgraded their host ordinance, which holds anyone of a party holds any host of a party accountable for serving alcohol at their parties. >> it holds parents responsible if there is a party at their home and

at their home. >> there are so many good, wonderful kids making healthy choices, and we are not talking about that. lauren: thompson's as they are in the process of collecting data from students to find out how many are actually drinking or not. it is about correcting misperceptions out there. >> we have the ability to how they see themselves and their fears when they realize most students are not doing this. it is this positive peer pressure. lauren: in january, a dublin high school student created this social platform called my alcohol story. it is where teenagers with stories share them. >> i have seen alcohol and drugs normalized. lauren: this soon-to-be senior is glad he can create a safe space to talk about something so personal. >> the stories, their

experience drinking, a lot of the times is at parties. we need to come together as a community to combat this normalization of alcohol. lauren: the director of communications with the montana institute says they will create messaging this fall or winter from the student surveys. lauren martinez, abc 7 news. ama: and it is not just worries about alcohol them about concern over fentanyl. dan: one father lost his son to the drug in 2020. charlie was attending santa clara university. his father says kids are not always seeking out the drug intentionally. he says charlie was looking for something else and got a bad pill. >> they found a dealer on snapchat and arranged to buy some pills from him. charlie at the time said, it looks like the guy has got perks. i will take one of those. he put one in his mouth and

died. ama: enforcement to keep a close eye on social media because that is where kids can find drugs, even if they are not looking for them. >> these social media platforms use official intelligence to drive content to the user's, so even if your child does not seek out these things on a social media platform, that does not mean this. content will not be pushed to them. dan: another suggestion is to not only check social media but understand how the apps work. if your child has snapchat, you should too so you know how to use it. ama: these types of conversations do not need to end here. dan: they are heading to high school gyms across the bay area. we have stories online about a fentanyl awareness program in lowland creek, and this weekend boxes of narcan being handed out at the library in los altos. ama: we want to make sure you have the tools you need to move

the conversation forward. you can find a list of local resources on our website,, abc7news.com/takeaction. another large fire in san francisco at inner sunset neighborhood. it seems to have broken into a hardware store as well as a shed. more than 100 firefighters responded to the scene. the fire as they got flames under control 45 minutes ago. dan: now to an emergency response crisis in valeo. the police chief says staffing levels are so low the department may stop responding to certain 911 calls in the town to free up officers. neighbors got their chance to voice their concerns tonight. tim johns was there and has the story. >> i have two neighbors who have

had home invasions and were on the phone with 911 and were told no one was coming. tim: real-life impacts of the policing crisis in valeo. the above valeo police department laid out there is -- their proposals to stop responding to alarm calls coming from homes and businesses. >> we believe implementing the proposed changes will increase our efficiency and response times for priority calls for service. tim: police would still respond to verified calls for service, meaning there was confirmation of a crime in progress. however, they say the lack of staffing at the department shows 98% of calls turn out to be false alarms and leave them with few options. >> we are not here to suggest in any way this is good for us or the community. tim: the proposal was not welcomed by many in attendance. >> i do not know if when we call 911 they will be responsive. tim: one of those expressing

concern was reverend dr. carolyn dyson, who has lived in valeo the past 23 years. >> i do not support it on any level. tim: she and others seniors are terrified by the events happening in the city. >> the very word, reduction, alerts the bad guys that is less in terms of opposition to what we do and what we are about. tim: for many in tuesday's audience, they want solutions, whether they come from inside valeo it or with outside help. tim johns, abc 7 news. ama: there were two deadly shootings in oakland today, and police say they happened around the same time. dan: one suspect in custody for the shooting at the late marit -- lake merritt bart station and the other on doolittle drive

step up its efforts to fill vacant jobs. dan: we are weeks away from the college football season and today's san jose state university and viewed in all new $70 million athletic center paid for by donors. j.r. stone was on campus tonight and got an up close look at this new 55,000 square-foot building. j.r.: we are here at the all new spartan athletic center, which provides amenities to 22 different sports teams at san jose state university. let's see what it looks like inside. even the hallways in this building are done up with the spartans logo. on the wall and on the ceiling. this is san jose state's got mcdonald who will be taking us on the tour. >> come up with us. everything here is state of the art. they all like their own music, so they can get in here and do their own little spotify playlists if they want.

dan: a doctor with ties to the bay area is accused of drugging and assaulting patients. now, there is a search for more victims tonight. 33-year-old zhi alan cheng was the name new york courtroom yesterday. he is facing

including assault, misdemeanor drug possession, and unlawful surveillance. the charges are based on his alleged encounters with six women, including three patients, but prosecutors say there are videos involving assaults of six other unidentified women. here in the bay area, cheng completed his internal medicine residency at the california pacific medical center, and during that residency, he was affiliated with the santa clara valley medical center. ama: reality tv star says she was ashamed for losing weight by taking the drug was a big -- ozempic. she lost more than 30 pounds by the next time the new season came on out. >> it was very effective for me. within the summer time frame, i
