visitors are leaving and are urged to not go to maui. nearly 300 buildings including homes and businesses are damaged or destroyed. the historic town behind it is essentially gone. a before and after picture, the image on top is what it used to look like and the bottom is what it looked like yesterday. the lieutenant governor says the road to recovery will likely take years. kumasi: packed with hundreds of displaced families and hospitals. the strong winds that fueled the flames are expected to slow down. military helicopters are helping with firefighting efforts and search-and-rescue response efforts are being -- department of transportation director expects 1500 people to fly out of maui, today more than

this morning, sleeping on the floors. >> this has turned into a travel nightmare for so many after authorities came out and said if you don't have to be on this island, you should get out. families raised only their flights have been canceled. families and kids sleeping on the ground, the airport is lined with people trying to figure out when they can make it home. one family were told the feckless -- fast as they can get a plane will be saturday, the hotels are evacuated or sold out in shelters are jampacked. this is not just an issue here, in--on the mainland, passengers are demanded to be let off planes they were finding out the devastation. i was on a plane from l.a. to maui when one mother with tears in her eyes was asking the crew

happens to be the biggest school district in santa clara county, welcoming more than 26,000 students back. many will arrive at hoover in san jose. overwhelmed, tired, excited. that is how parents are describing to return to school. the district is adding eight full-time behavioral support specialists throughout its system. this is in response to issues experienced last year when the district saw an uptick in behaviors in youngest students, such as difficulty with conflict resolution. they attribute this to pandemic related struggles, such challenges are a nationwide trend at all levels. school safety is always top of mind. we will remember several incidents between april and may of last year within sj usd, involving social media threats, a school shooting and students bringing firearms and a knife onto campus. they are

kumasi: a lot of neighbors in the east bay have questions about multiple people being found dead inside of a home in danville. law-enforcement was called to the home off of work would circle around 5:30 p.m. for a welfare check. the contra costa county sheriffs office says it is investigating this as a possible murder suicide. abc7news spoke to a longtime neighbor who can't believe this happened so close to his home. >> this is shocking, i have kids here. i have lived here for 20 years. you can't process it. i think we have even had

anything as far as murder, suicide. kumasi: the sheriffs office says there is no threat to the public. reggie: the oakland mayor highlighting the work heard meditation is doing to tackle violence. some people say what is being done is not enough. $2 million will go to work reducing school violence. it details claims to add more foot patrol officers and a cease fire initiative which focuses on gang and group violence. some critics say too much money is being given to opd when other programs need funding. >> we are causes of property crimes, robberies, people are struggling to survive. reggie: they want more put toward violence prevention, which recently saw a budget cut. kumasi: executives from the

state officials say the governor of hawaii will travel to maui to get a first look at the damage. evacuations are underway after nearly 300 buildings have been damaged or destroyed. hawaii lieutenant opener silvio says that includes homes and small businesses that took years of hard work. >> the road to recovery will be long. we need to figure out a way to help a lot of people in the next several years and to build some of these structures. reggie: taurus are being told to get off the island as soon as possible. moments ago we saw a reporter where people were sleeping in the terminal of the airport trying to get out. about 11,000 people flew out. if you had a trip to maui plants, officials are asking you to reconsider and asking everybody to cancel non-essential travel to maui. several airlines are offering waivers to change her trip without penalty. one woman was supposed to see her husband and kids on the

and realize that every time people get behind the wheel, we make choices conscious or unconscious about how safe we are going to be. it is about education, awareness and behavior change. kumasi: safety is important. the number is down this year. reggie: students were required -- invited to pick up bring school supplies last year. backpacks filled with school donated -- they gift cards to buy new school clothes. the need for school supplies has increased in recent years. >> these families sometimes have to make hard choices like between gasoline and these types of things. so we want these children to have a fair start in school where they don't have to make those choices.
