playing out on block after block since tuesday, creating the state's worst natural disaster in 63 years. over night, the death toll from the wildfires on maui skyrocketing. >> what we've seen today has been catastrophic. >> there is tragedy on the roadside. there's tragedy in the homes in lahaina. >> first responders confirm more than 50 people have been killed in the fires, making it the state's deadliest natural disaster since the 1960s. tsunami officials say they still do not have an estimate for the number of people missing. >> we don't know how many people we have dead. when this is all said and done, we just don't know. it's 53. it is rising. i do not know what the final number is going to be and it's going to be horrible and tragic when we get that number. >> more than 1000 structures were destroyed by fires. new images show lahaina, the town at the heart of the tragedy turned to ash as the community braces for what they will find when the smoke settles. >> there is no power. there is

no internet. there is no radio coverage. >> amid the devastation, harrowing tales of survival. >> it was a huge black smoke back then. and. undescribable. >> the coast guard says they rescued 57 people after they were forced to dive into the sea to escape the fast moving flames . >> at one point, it seemed like might drown a little bit. >> i inhaled a lot of water. among those rescued, steve scott , who was searching for his wife amid the chaos. >> i'm trying to find my wife. i know she's safe. i think she's safe. but i haven't found her yet. >> the couple finally reunited late yesterday, did 58 drops drop in just over 100,000 gallons of water? the fire was 80% contained overnight. now, thousands of people are scrambling to get off the island. the rush to escape causing a bottleneck at the airport, leaving hundreds with

nowhere to go and nowhere to sleep. >> this airport is jam packed and there are no rooms left on this island. so some of these people could find themselves sleeping here at the airport through the weekend. >> meanwhile, on another part of the island, downed power lines sparked a fire that tore through . these neighbors tried to fight the flames themselves, but in the end, they couldn't save their homes. >> water pressure started to drop. we had a hard time holding it back, but we're still we were winning the game. and then the water turned off and then there wasn't anything we could do. then the sparks were blowing up out of the gulch over onto our properties. fortunately, most of them angled away from that house . but they came. came to mind. and the neighbors. >> so much devastation. well, much of hawaii was under a red flag warning when the wildfires broke out. but the exact causes are still unknown. >> now to the race for 2024. the republican candidates are attending the iowa state fair

this weekend, drumming up support with early voters. former president trump arrives tomorrow while mike pence is already in iowa. pence defended his actions on january sixth after someone at the fair accused him of treason. abc's justin finch is live in washington with the details. good morning, justin. >> andrew good morning all. 12 republican presidential candidates will be in iowa this weekend with the exception chris christie. most of them will take part in the politico soapbox. some hopefuls, including florida governor ron desantis, are not taking part in the soapbox speech. former vice president mike pence was heckled by trump supporters at the fair, calling him a traitor. pence remains a key figure in one indictment against trump, alleging that the former president conspired to illegally overturn the 2020 election. pence defended himself from the political soapbox. >> and i'll always believe by god's grace, i did my duty that day. i truly believe it. and it's among the reasons i step

forward today, because i truly do believe that people deserve to know that on that day, the former president asked me to choose him over my oath to the constitution. i chose the constitution, and i always will . >> pence also saying everyone who qualifies should be at the first debate, including trump. on the democrat side, the two candidates challenging president biden, marianne williamson and robert f kennedy jr will make brief stops at the fair. biden himself, who remains the race's clear frontrunner, has no plans to attend. andrew justin, thank you. >> supreme court justice clarence thomas is accused of taking even more luxury trips and gifts from billionaires than previously believed. propublica found that thomas accepted at least 38 vacations, 26 flights on private jets and a dozen vip passes to sporting events. the news site said it has not identified any legal cases the benefactors had before the supreme court, but that thomas may have broken the law by not

disclosing the gifts. >> five americans being held in iran are now a step closer to freedom. they were transferred from a notorious prison to house arrest in a deal that calls for the release of $6 million of iranian funds frozen in south korea. three of the americans were accused of espionage, and the other two want to remain anonymous. abc's martha raddatz reports. they could be back on us soil by next month. it will likely take at least 4 or 5 weeks for that money to come through. >> and the prisoners hopefully brought back to the us. the white house saying the negotiations remain delicate. >> the frozen funds had been tied up by us sanctions. officials saying the money must be used for humanitarian reasons. >> six colombian men are charged with the assassination of an ecuadorian presidential candidate. officials say the suspect in wednesday's shooting are part of a drug trafficking ring. the candidate had campaigned on fighting crime and corruption. a number of other candidates have suspended their campaigns in the wake of the killing. >> now to harrowing new video

showing when a man was killed by the fbi during a raid. agents were trying to arrest him for allegedly threatening to assassinate president biden. abc s mola lenghi has the details. >> new video capturing the deadly standoff in utah as fbi agents tried to arrest a man they say was making credible threats to kill president biden . video taken by a neighbor showing agents surrounding a home in provo early wednesday morning yelling for craig robertson to come out. then a flashbang grenade goes off. a law enforcement officials telling abc news robertson appeared to point a gun at the officers before agents fatally shot him. gunshot wounds. it's going to be approximately 75 year old male. a federal complaint listing dozens of robertson's alleged social media posts, among them, images of a cache of weapons and multiple violent threats against biden and other high profile officials , including this one just four

days ago. i hear biden is coming to utah, digging out my old ghillie suit and cleaning the dust off the m24 sniper rifle. >> our thanks to mola. now to the supreme court temporarily blocking the landmark opioid settlement with purdue pharma, the maker of oxycontin. the biden administration objected to the part of the deal which shields the company's owners, the sackler family from civil opioid related lawsuits. the company also agreed to pay $6 billion to victims and families of the opioid crisis. the court is expected to hear arguments before the end of the year. >> california regulators have cleared the way for robo taxis to offer pay rides in san francisco 24 over seven. despite pushback from city officials. now to driverless car service companies will be competing for passengers against ride hailing service and regular taxis. there were concerns over incidents where the unmanned cars blocked traffic and emergency vehicles. >> time now for a look at your morning weather now.

>> good morning, america. >> we're back with the 78 year old driver slamming his car into two mall store fronts. it happened outside new orleans. police say no one was hurt. investigators say the band appeared to be disoriented and suffering from an unknown medical condition. no charges were filed. >> a fourth person is under arrest for that brawl in montgomery, alabama, last weekend. mary todd turned herself into police. she's facing an assault charge. police won't say what her exact role was, but video from the fight shows a woman, possibly todd, throwing punches. >> kids in kentucky's largest school district have today off. and that's because officials are trying to fix a delivery problem . they haven't been able to get the kids home at a decent hour with some out on the roads after dark. here's abc's derrick dennis this morning. >> no school again today for jefferson county kentucky public schools after this week's school

bus meltdown. >> i feel like we were lucky. we were lucky that he was three hours late. parents like aaron henson waiting hour after hour for their child to be bused home after school. >> the latest arrival time, incredibly, just before 10:00 pm, kindergartners were going to the bathroom on the bus because they were there for so long. >> they there were kids sitting in cafeterias until well after 730. >> my child did not get home until 8:00. she got home at 8:00 because i had to go to the bus depot to pick her up as well. >> the problem last school year, the district made major changes to its transportation plan, citing bus driver shortages and other staff vacancies, spending $200,000 on a firm that cut routes and stops. but to some parents, the changes seem to have made things worse. >> there are bus drivers that are crying as they come in and they're leaving, apologizing and don't believe it's their fault. >> so attendant marty polio releasing a statement announcing
